Education / When Will Schools Resume In Nigeria by CampusTrybe(m): 1:26pm On Aug 31, 2020
When will schools resume is a question that has been on the lips of many students and parents across Nigeria due to the lockdown.

There has been a fervent agitation among Nigerian students concerning when schools will resume in the country following the Covid-19 induced vacation which has “led to the largest disruption of education ever”, as noted by António Guterres. On the 26th of March 2020, the Federal Government of Nigeria had shut down academic activities in the country “as a proactive step aimed at preventing the spread of the dreaded Coronavirus”. In harmony, more than 180 countries had equally shut down face-to-face academic activities in their educational institutions.

Irrespective of the effective safety measures taken by several countries, the Coronavirus has never ceased its global surge. As of 27 August 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) Covid-19 database has captured 23, 980, 044 confirmed cases of infected humans and 820, 763 related deaths. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on its part has confirmed 53, 021 cases and 1, 010 deaths. WHO Director-general had disclosed in his opening remarks, at the Covid-19 media briefing on 24 August 2020, that “a number of vaccines are now in the final stage of clinical trials”. This is likely the only hope of mankind presently.

In the absence of a vaccine however, reopening of social activities has begun in several countries, and schools aren’t left out. More than 20 countries have reopened schools, while some countries, including Taiwan, Nicaragua, and Sweden, never closed their schools in the first place. This is consequent to the better understanding of the novel virus and its controlled transmission in those countries.

Nigeria has equally begun its reopening process. This is witnessed in the recent reopening of prayer houses, markets and a proposed resumption of international flights. However, schools are yet to be included in the spree. This has raised eyebrows in several quarters, and the query, “when will schools resume in Nigeria”, continues to grow as the days go by.

A 3-seconds video that recently went viral on social media seems to have shown the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, saying that all schools in Nigeria will resume on 7 September 2020. However, Africa Check has discredited the video as “old, and doctored”. So, when will schools resume in Nigeria?

In this article, we will explore the opinions of related stakeholders in order to determine when schools will resume in Nigeria. Our chemistry will include:

The opinion of Nigerian students;
The opinion of the Federal Government of Nigeria;
The opinion of lecturing bodies;
The opinion of the World Health Organization (WHO).

1. The Opinion of Nigerian Students

The Guardian reported on 21 August 2020 that “The Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, has called on the federal and state governments to see to the possibility of the full reopening of schools in the country”. Previously, students under the aegis of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had protested in Abuja on 19 August 2020, asking the federal government to reopen schools for face-to-face classroom learning. They argued that if the government could reopen markets, prayer houses and the airports, there is no reason to delay schools resumption until farther.

2. The Opinion of the Federal Government of Nigeria

In reaction to NANS protest, the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, disclosed, during the daily briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on Covid-19, on 24 August 2020 that the federal government is collaborating with stakeholders on the prospect of schools resumption. He also disclosed that Nigerian universities are almost ready to welcome students back to school.

Education / 10 Types Of Students In Every School Hostels by CampusTrybe(m): 11:43am On Oct 21, 2019
School hostels are sometimes unavoidable places to live for every student. Over time, the school hostels have proven to be the best alternative to accommodation on and off campuses.

The higher institution anywhere in the world opens up a whole world of experiences and meetings of all sorts of people that helps shape our ideology and how we think of others. Be it on the school campus or off-campus, this short article will share some of the types of people you should expect to meet in every school hostel.

1. School Hostels Noisemaker
No better name to qualify this type of students other than the noisemakers. Whether it’s during exam periods, early morning or night, they are always listening to loud music from their rooms. Like it or not, everyone in the hostel often looks up to them for the latest tracks and hip hop news.

2. The Troublemakers/Fighters
In everything you do, just pray you never come across this category of students in the school hostel. They can fight with anybody and everybody, portal, roommates, hostel cleaners, vendors and more. Guess what, they don’t fight with either their boyfriends and girlfriends.

3. The borrow borrow
This category of students already dropped their shoulder pad since the beginning of the session and they never cease to amaze others with their everlasting request. They borrow anything you can imagine from sugar, milk, noodles, pots, perfume, salt, lighter, red oil. The only thing they can’t borrow is your CGPA.

4. The Squatters
Squatters are special breeds of students that help others share their space, kitchen, bedroom and even closets. Is either they spent their hostel fee on something or they just chose to be annoying, I don’t know. The most annoying part is when the exam approaches and you see your squatter recruiting new squatter to squat with him or her.

5. The Scholar
This category of students is after one thing and that’s their grade. They don’t care about their looks, what they wear, eat or where they sleep. Some of them even bring their books to football viewing centers. You hardly find them playing around, from the hostel to the library to class.

I wonder how they manage to make it to 8 AM classes even when water is scarce in the hostel. Share in the comments if you know how they do that.

Jokes Etc / What Is The Meaning Of Bomboclaat? by CampusTrybe(m): 10:14am On Oct 09, 2019
Bomboclaat is a combination of "Bumbo" and "claat", the two words together pronounced as "Bumboclaat" means toilet paper or menstrual pads. Bumbo is the Jamaican word for bottom while claat is the patois pronunciation of cloth. There are different spelling variations of the word but the correct spelling is "Bumboclaat" in the Jamaican language.

This popular Jamaican word is being used for the new trending meme on Twitter and it's beginning to overshadow Sco pa tu manaa. The word can be used in different places, either as a curse word, exclamation or just as an expression. The word is used to show extreme levels of surprise, frustration or even anger and mostly used instead of "f**k", for example: "Wah di bomboclaat yuh sey?" meaning "What the f**k do you say?"

In this short article, I will explain the true meaning of Bomboclaat and how it is being used across Social Media.

What Does Bomboclaat mean?

Simply put, Bomboclaat, when used by Jamaican Patois, is to curse anyone or show surprise and anger. The word is commonly used alongside other curse words such as Bloodclaat, Pussyclaat or even together as Bombobloodclaat or Bombopussyclaat.

However, on Twitter, the word is being used as a meme to depict two different looks and users are giving it different interpretations as a reply and quoted tweet. The trend started after a picture of a rat was shared in two frames. The first frame showing the rat coming out of his hideout and the second frame showing the rat going inside. Below are some of the most popular meme edition from Twitter.

NYSC means for National Youth Service Corps. This is a scheme by the Federal Government of Nigeria that was set up in 1973. This is a compulsory scheme that every young graduate of a Nigerian university or Polytechnic must attend. It has been so since 1973. Members of the scheme are addressed as Prospective Corp Members when they are yet to go for camp and are referred to as Corpers or “Agunbaniro” in the Yoruba language.

It was created on the 22nd day of May in 1973 and it was created in order to foster unity and common ties among the Nigerian populace. It was established after the civil war that lasted between 1967 to 1970 for the rebuilding project of the nation.

NYSC is operated through the deployment of graduates or corps members to other states different from their state of origin or regional origin in the country. This is to promote the mixing of ethnic tribes with each other and also unity among the ethnic groups.

In this article, we will put you through the NYSC Anthem, the NYSC pledge and everything you need to know about NYSC. Below is the NYSC Anthem for Youth Corpers;

NYSC Pledge

The NYSC scheme also has a pledge which they expect all youth Corpers to receive at campgrounds. The pledge is on the NYSC official website on the Internet. There, you can read the full pledge and the conditions attached to it. All Corp Members are expected to sign the pledge at the camp. A failure to sign the NYSC pledge will mean the Corper will be sent away from the camp. The Corper will only be allowed back in the next batch and that is when she/he is ready to sign the pledge.

You know that feeling you get when your alarm wakes you up in the morning and all you can think of is sleep? But then you have no choice but to struggle out of bed every day to get yourself ready for work because it pays the bills and you can’t afford to be broke.

You get to work, you’re expected to do so many things that your brain can’t even phantom half the time but you go ahead anyway. That tired feeling you get when you think of this same repeated process every single day for the rest of the week.

That feeling you get when you go for a break and you wish that was the end of the day but then you rush back to work because called and said the Boss was asking of you. The fear, the panic, the paranoia over why your boss is asking about you. Is he gonna fire you? Is this all gonna be over? Will this make you happy or sad?

You try to push all these thoughts away, try to overcome the anxiety eating you deeply, put on a brave face and walk into that office. Your boss calls your name as he looks up at you, emotionless as usual, your heart is beating three times faster and just when you’re about to lose it. He says “I just spoke to the board of directors, we’ve been seeing your workaround and I personally wasn’t too thrilled about this idea… at first” he takes a long pause, stands up from his seat and walks to lean on his desk.
