Benue State women under the aegis of Concerned Benue Mothers, on Wednesday, staged a peaceful protest around the streets of Makurdi, the state capital, in solidarity with the State Governor, Samuel Ortom, who has been at loggerheads with the Federal Government. The peaceful protest, tagged “5,000 match in support of Governor Samuel Ortom”, was led by a former House of Representatives member, Rebecca Apedzan. The women all dressed in black, carried leaves and placards with different inscriptions, and declared their unalloyed support to Ortom in his fight to stop the killing of the state residents by armed herdsmen. Hannatu Ullam, who read a statement on behalf of the women, said the herdsmen have been killing their children, husbands, mothers and sacked the people from their ancenstral homes. The women called on the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, to tender an apology to the people of the state for calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in the state. The statement reads in part: “We are all aware how our state Governor, Samuel Ortom has been consistent, raising alarm over the sustained killings of innocent Benue citizens by the Fulani herdsmen. “These Fulani armed militia not only kill our children, husbands, mothers and sack them from their ancestral homes but also rape our daughters and mothers. “Governor Ortom who has been in the forefront, seeking that the Federal government takes decisive action and end this grave insecurity challenge has rather come under attack by no other person but Senator George Akume, Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs. “As mothers, we are shocked that Senator Akume and his group chose the ignominious path to close their eyes against the pains visited on the people of Benue state by Fulani killer herdsmen. They rather preferred to take sides with a President that has not shown any form of concern at the attacks and killings perpetrated by his kinsmen against the law abiding people of our dear state. “It is too early in the day for any discerning Benue son or daughter to forget President Buhari’s counsel that we should learn to live with our (killer) neighbours. “It is surprising that Senator Akume who has benefited so much from Benue State will turn around to seek to destroy it for his selfish reasons. This is someone who was elected Governor for eight years and Senator for twelve years. Now he wants to destroy the same democratic structures that brought him into prominence. “It is sad that Akume and his cohorts seek to trample on the pride of Benue to sing praises of a president and an administration that has failed to secure the lives of Benue people. We make bold to say that Akume’s outing was shameful and smacks of subservience, just to satisfy his masters who have no regards for the lives of the people of our great state. “We are therefore calling on Senator Akume to make haste to tender an unreserved apology to the peace-loving people of Benue and His Excellency, Governor Ortom in order to avoid the wrath of the gods of the land. “As a former governor, he should be in the forefront speaking against the mindless shedding of blood by herdsmen and not seen to be promoting hate on our governor for speaking truth to power simply because of political differences.” In reaction, Ortom said he remains unshaken in ensuring peace in the State. Ortom said: “I remain committed to Benue people. Whatever you want me to do, I will do. Nobody will intimidate me. The prohibition of open grazing has come to stay. Whether you are a Christian, Muslim, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, you are free to operate here in Benue State as long as you operate in accordance with the law. “There is no open grazing, RUGA, cattle colonies, no cattle routes, 180 settlement farms in Benue State.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/benue-women-protest-over-attacks-on-gov-ortom-by-nigerian-govt/ |

Appreciation in Bitcoin market value is gaining momentum with the hype around El Salvador’s official adoption of the most popular cryptocurrency. Following months of preparation, El Salvador officially made bitcoin its second currency, to compliment its fiat, the US dollar, which it also adopted in 2001. El Salvador’s President defies IMF, World Bank In a tweet announcing the entry of the Central American country in bitcoin community, El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, said, “El Salvador has just bought it’s first 200 coins.” He added that, “Our brokers will be buying a lot more as the deadline approaches.” El Salvador chose bitcoin as its official currency despite warnings from the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. Both financial institutions had stated that making a digital asset an official currency, will be detrimental to any country’s economy, but, Bukele went ahead with the implementation. Prior to the launch, Bukele had stated on Monday night, that, “Tomorrow, for the first time in history, all the eyes of the world will be on El Salvador.” Bitcoin community pushing crypto towards milestone The decision of El Salvador has been widely accepted by the bitcoin community, with Microstratey founder and bitcoin disciple, Michael Saylor, crowdsourcing for investment to support the country. Saylor said he and some other investors are planning to invest $30 worth of bitcoin in solidarity. The hype trailing El Salvador’s decision has driven bitcoin value up by 1.34 percent in last 14hours. Bitcoin current price is $52,508.73, although it has traded as high as $52,634.50 within the last 13hours, according to crypto tracker, Coindesk – it continues to sell above $51,000 in September, having traded mostly below $50,000 in August. The digital asset is heading for a milestone it clocked in May, when it hit the highest value of $63,569, before billionaire, Elon Musk, withdrew his support for bitcoin over environmental degradation claim. Bitcoin disciples believe the digital asset is done with its price correction (which is returning asset value back to what is expected to be its original worth.) and will experience another price bubble. Commenting on the growth of bitcoin, Saylor said, “If I had chosen #Gold instead of #Bitcoin last year, it would have been a multi-billion dollar mistake. It doesn’t help to diagnose the problem if you don’t choose the right solution.” https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/bitcoin-heads-for-another-milestone-as-el-salvadors-president-defies-imf-world-bank/ |
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has begun the process of securing the freedom of some of its members arrested in Ghana. The Ghanaian police had arrested some members of the group around Mallam Junction in Accra, while they were having their monthly meeting. Following the development, Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers representing the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in a post on social media platform, Twitter, on Monday, said he has sent some documents that would aid the release of the arrested members. Using his official Twitter handle @AloyEjimakor, he tweeted, “Update on #IPOB Ghana: A few days ago, I sent to the DOS (via @ChinasaNworu) certain legal documents critical to the defense of the faithful currently distressed in Ghana. The goal is to quickly secure their freedom and prevent their “rendition to injustices” in Nigeria.” Ripples Nigeria reported that the IPOB leader, Kanu is facing trial for alleged terrorism, treason, running an illegal company, publishing defamatory material and illegal possession of firearms. The Nigerian authorities had arrested Kanu abroad and extradicted him to back to Nigeria for jumping bail and leaving the country in 2017. However, IPOB members across the globe and many South-East leaders have called on the Nigerian government to free Kanu unconditionally, saying his arrest was illegal. https://i2.wp.com/www.ripplesnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Screenshot_20210906-131354_1.jpg https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/ipob-moves-to-stop-extradition-of-members-arrested-in-ghana-to-nigeria/ |
Senator Ali Ndume has said that repentant members of the Boko Haram group should not be wholly set free but properly profiled, interrogated and those with blood hands should be appropriately made to face consequences as prescribed by international law. Speaking to newsmen after he met with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa in Abuja at the weekend , the Chairman of Senate Committee on Army affirmed that the erstwhile insurgents could not be let go just because they have surrendered. He said even though some of them may be innocent , especially those who may have been used as slaves and human shields , they must all be processed according to national and international laws. He contended that since they have surrendered, they could not be summarily executed just as no one has to be let go without following due process. Baring his mind on reintegrating the former insurgents into the Borno society, Ndume said : “My stance on this has not changed, only that maybe people interpret it the way they want. There are national and international laws that should guide all these . This is not the first time we ’ re having this sort of challenge in various countries. “Normally, when you get to war level , you are expected to either defeat the enemy , or the enemy surrenders . Once the enemy surrenders , you lose the right of summarily executing him because he is an enemy . You also don ’ t have the right to summarily declare him innocent and say, ‘ Oh , you have sinned, go and sin no more. ’ “What I’m saying is that , in as much as we welcome the surrendering of Boko Haram members, it is very important that we follow the due process, according to the law of the land and the international law . We sat down in Borno State last week , as stakeholders, to look at the suggestions on how people surrendering could be managed according to the law. ” Senator Ndume pointed out that following the resolutions reached by the stakeholders, the federal government will soon come out with a definite position on the best way to manage the issue of the surrendering insurgents. He advised that those who still want to surrender should be given a window of opportunity to do so. On whether information can be extracted from those surrendering for use in ending the war, he said: “That is why I say they ought to be processed. The Nigerian intelligence services are capable of obtaining the necessary information from those in custody . That is what the intelligence agencies are trained to do. “The priorities should be; one , end the war , two, resettle the victims, then process, interrogate and investigate or prosecute. This is what we are saying that there should be no hurry in it . Once they are taken in , they should be kept somewhere, so that it will give space for interrogation and investigation, ” he said. https://m.guardian.ng/news/repentant-terrorists-with-bloody-hands-must-face-consequences-says-ndume/ |
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation earned revenue of N4.61tn and spent N4.52tn in 2020, according to a report released on Friday. The report, titled ‘2020 NNPC Annual Performance Review’, was developed by BudgIT in partnership with Oxfam. According to the organisations, NNPC’s revenue in 2020 showed a 23.8 per cent decrease from the N6.05tn it earned in 2019. The report said, “The expenditure of all its subsidiaries stood at N4.52tn. Total crude oil production suffered an 11.61 per cent decrease, from the 734.27 million barrels produced in 2019 to the 649.00 million barrels produced in 2020. “Pipeline breaks, a key cause of oil revenue leakage and production loss, had a 70.28 per cent decline from 1,484 breakpoints in 2019 to 441 breakpoints in 2020. Likewise, a corresponding 57.87 per cent decline in NNPC’s spending on pipeline maintenance costs was recorded as it plummeted from N126.66bn in 2019 to N53.36bn in 2020.” According to the report, NNPC’s ailing refineries, led by Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, wiped out a total of N100.03bn from the corporation’s revenue in 2020, despite past announcements of investments in turnaround maintenance. “Also, despite announcing a deal to boost PHRC’s performance through a colocation agreement with Maire Tecnimont SPA a few years ago, the Federal Executive Council recently approved another $1.5bn for a rehabilitation exercise of the PHRC,” it said. The report noted that the global oil and gas industry faced the twin shocks of the oil price crash and the COVID-19 pandemic last year, influencing demand and supply of crude oil and plunging Nigeria into its second recession in six years. It said the amount the NNPC claimed as crude oil losses rose by 35.33 per cent from N3.46bn in 2019 to N5.35bn in 2020, while NNPC’s product losses declined from N32.96bn in 2019 to N15.71bn in 2020. According to the report, NNPC has struggled to keep its refineries operating profitably. It said in 2020, the refineries were out of operation, adding that the last time the refineries were in operation was July 2019. They added that in the 2020 financial year, the refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Warri incurred a cumulative loss of N100.39bn and accumulated a total deficit of N486.54bn between 2016 and 2020. The report said there was a decrease of 7.99 per cent in the total volume of petrol imported into the country via the Direct Sales Direct Purchase arrangements in 2020, compared to the volume imported in 2019. It said, “NNPC continues to record shocking losses, with its Corporate Headquarters responsible for its biggest loss worth N123.96bn in 2020. Six other subsidiaries made a cumulative loss of N125.12bn. “The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company emerged as a shining star in the 2020 financial year with a N148.80bn profit, followed by the Nigerian Gas Company Limited with N80.37bn and the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company with N38.01bn profit.” They added, “In 2020, $1.50bn, representing 57.25 per cent of the total $2.62bn receipts from crude oil and gas exports, was transferred to Joint Venture Cash call, while the balance of $1.12bn representing 42.75 per cent was remitted to FAAC. From the proceeds from the sale of domestic crude oil, N826.03bn was allocated to JV Cost recovery while N713.12bn was transferred to the Federation Account.” According to the report, in 2020, the NNPC made a total payment of N1.05tn to the Federation account. “These include N713.12bn for naira payments from domestic crude and $1.12bn (N342.45bn) USD payments. year on year. This N1.05tn represents a 3.67 per cent decrease from the total N1.09tn remitted to the federation account in 2019 from both equity export and domestic export,” it added. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had recently announced a net profit reported by the NNPC for the first time in its 44-year history. He had said the corporation made N287bn profit after tax in 2020. https://punchng.com/nnpc-earned-n4-61tn-spent-n4-52tn-in-2020-budgit/ |
