PapiWata:

I know a person who was abducted in Nigeria, and starved for the entire 5 days he spent in captivity. He was also under 24-hour armed guard, beaten occasionally and instructed repeatedly not to utter a WORD, lest they be shot right away. So he sat alongside his fellow captive, and slowly starved to death over 5 days of being given water to drink ONLY, and being forbidden from speaking to beg for food, or for freedom.

Before hearing the story this kidnap survivor told me, I was under the naive impression that Nigerian kidnap gangs feed their captives, and were concerned that their victims survive the ordeal such that the ransom is paid. Now I know that the most frequent cause of death for kidnap victims in Nigeria is simply STARVATION, for those unfortunate souls whose families are unable to raise the demanded ransom money in a week or less.

In short, the modern Nigerian kidnapper does NOT budget for feeding the victims, and will gladly allow them to die an agonizing death by starvation without a second thought, in those instances when the families of the victim fails to produce the demanded ransom amount promptly. The days of cordial relations between kidnap victims and their kind, caring guards are now but a blessed memory in Nigeria. Today's Nigerian kidnap gangs kill victims for sport, once it has been established that they are monetarily unprofitable.

Some kidnappers feed their victims at least once daily.
Politics / Amaechi To Fani-kayode: I Have A Better Name, Credentials by candycrushsoda: 4:34pm On Mar 19, 2015
Governor of Rivers State and Director General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi on Wednesday slammed the Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, as he stated that he has a better name and political credentials than Fani-Kayode.

Amaechi, who spoke at the Town Hall Meeting organised in Abuja by the APC campaign organisation on security, stated that Fani-Kayode misconstrued his story of “one shirt one trousers” as an undergraduate in University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The former Minister of Aviation had denigrated the governor of Rivers State on his Facebook page as someone who went to university with one shirt, one pair of trousers and whose father was a palm wine tapper.

But Amaechi, responding to Fani-Kayode’s denigration, said, the story was for people to appreciate his humbly background and not that he came from a wretched family as the PDP presidential campaign spokesperson painted the picture.

Speaking on the reasons why there are so much insecurity in the country, stated he has cross the Rubicon of describing him as the son Amaechi, but would be better referred to as governor of Rivers State and his father as the father of the Rivers State governor. Amaechi, who said if a man grows to honour the father would be happy to be referred to as the father of the man. He queried if Femi Fani-Kayode was living would he be happy to be referred to as the father Fan-Kayode.

He said yes he went to school with one shirt and one pair of trousers, today he is a governor and Fani-Kayode is not. He also stated that he had served as a Speaker of the State House of Assembly and Fani-Kayode has not. He said: “I am a governor, Fani-Kayode is not. I have served as a Speaker of State Assembly, Fani-Kayode has not.

“My father would be happy to be referred to as the father of the Rivers State governor, would Femi Fani-Kayode’s father, if living would he be happy to be referred to as Fani-Kayode’s father?”

On how to create a secure environment, he advised leaders to make sure that people feel the impact of their leadership in a positive form.

Politics / Gunmen Kidnap Diezani Allison-Madueke's Brother by candycrushsoda: 1:20pm On Mar 19, 2015
Unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Thursday kidnapped Joseph Agama, the younger brother to Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, Police sources say.

Police Spokesman for Bayelsa Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the development on Thursday. He  said that the command got a report shortly after the incident happened.

According to Butswat, the police received a  distress call on Thursday from the victim’s father, Maxwell Agama.

Butswat said that the incident occurred at about 12.30 am on Thursday at Yenaka Community, a coastal settlement in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa  state.

Community sources said that the armed gunmen off with the victim to an unknown destination after abandoning their original boat.

Family sources said that the kidnappers were yet to establish contact or demand ransom.

It will be recalled that a sister to the minister,  Osiyo Agama, was kidnapped in October 2014 in Port Harcourt and later rescued by a combined team of Joint Task Force and Department of State Security Services.

Diezani who is known as a powerful minister in President Goodluck Jonathan cabinet and  widely believed to be the most corrupt could afford to pay ransom requested by kidnappers who have now made a habit of abducting members of her family.

Recently her donation of N70 million to the Bayelsa chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  is currently causing crisis in the party that crisis led to the suspension of Col. Sam Inokoba as state chairman of the party.

Diezani is also at the centre of controversial  award of pipeline surveillance contracts to militiamen and ethnic warlords across Nigeria.

Last week ex-militants shortchanged in the process  staged a protest  led to the deaths of an ex-militant in the hands of anti-riot policemen in Yenagoa. In Lagos, a group led by Yoruba militia leader, Gani Adams staged a protest in Lagos city that resulted in  attack on campaign billboards of oppression figures and harassment of innocent members of the public, the protest caused panic and confusion. Mr Adams also stated that his group had just been awarded pipeline surveillance contract.

Crime / Woman Bites Off Friend’s Lip Over Gossip (pic) by candycrushsoda: 5:00pm On Mar 18, 2015
A 32-year-old woman has been arrested and charged before Isolo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly biting her friend’s lower lip during a fight at Ajao Estate, Lagos State, western Nigeria.

The victim, Ada Joy Samuel, lost a part of her lower lip after she engaged Ejiofor Chioma in a street fight over allegation by Chioma that Ada was spreading gossip with her name.

The incident happened at Canal Extension, off Itanola Drive, Ajao Estate, Lagos where the two friends reside.

Trouble started after Chioma, a mother of four whose husband had relocated to their village in Umuahia, Abia State, accused Ada of gossiping with her name to the neighbours.

This caused a disagreement between Chioma and Ada that eventually resulted in both fighting in public.

During the fight, Chioma allegedly grabbed Ada and bit off part of her lower lip which fell on the ground.

Ada started bleeding profusely and was rushed to a hospital, while Chioma was arrested and taken to the Police Station at Ajao Division and later charged to court with wounding under the Criminal Code.

When she was arraigned, she pleaded not guilty and the presiding Magistrate, Mrs Y. R. Pinheiro granted Chioma bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety in like sum..

The prosecutor, Inspector A. Abasss did not object to her bail but asked the court to take judicial notice of the seriousness of the injury sustained by Ada.

She was remanded in prison custody pending when she would meet the bail condition and the matter was adjourned.

Politics / Patricia Naomi Akwashiki, New Minister For Information Appointed. by candycrushsoda: 11:46am On Mar 18, 2015
President Jonathan Appoints Senator Patricia Akwashiki as the New Minister of Information

Patricia Naomi Akwashiki (born 2 November 1953) was elected Senator for the Nasarawa North constituency of Nasarawa State, Nigeria, taking office on 29 May 2007. She is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP)

Akwashiki earned a BA in Education from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1982. She entered the banking industry, where she became a senior manager.[1] She was elected to the 5th Assembly (2003–2007) of the House of Representatives on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. She failed to win the PDP nomination to run for a second term, and transferred to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), on which ticket she won election in 2007 as Senator for Nasarawa North.[2]

After taking her seat in the Senate in May 2007, Akwashiki was appointed to committees on States & Local Government, Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Communications, Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions and Women and Youth.[1] In a mid-term evaluation of Senators in May 2009, ThisDay noted that she sponsored a bill to amend the Code of Conduct Bureau and contributed brilliantly to debate in plenary and committee assignments.[3] In January 2010 she returned to the PDP, citing injustice and insensitivity of the ANPP national secretariat and factional infighting in the state chapter of the party as reasons

Politics / Jonathan Admits Nigeria Lied Over Morocco Phone Row; Orders Probe by candycrushsoda: 6:22pm On Mar 13, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan admitted Friday that he did not speak on telephone with the King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, as claimed last week by the Nigerian foreign affairs ministry, an apparently false claim that sparked a diplomatic spat between the two countries with Morocco recalling its ambassador.

The president has ordered a full investigation into the scandal and has promised to sanction the foreign affairs official who made that claim, a statement from his office said.

Mr. Jonathan was “shocked, surprised and highly embarrassed by the controversy that has erupted over whether or not he had a telephone conversation with His Majesty, King Mohammed VI of Morocco,” the statement said.

Diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Morocco worsened Tuesday after the North African country recalled its ambassador from Abuja, following the telephone call row.

The controversy began after Morocco revealed last week that its leader rejected a request from Mr. Jonathan for a conversation.

The Moroccan Foreign Ministry said the request was a devious move by Mr. Jonathan to curry electoral favour than a genuine diplomatic move.

“The request by Nigerian authorities for a phone conversation between HM King Mohammed VI and Nigerian President was refused by the Monarch who deemed it inappropriate on grounds of the upcoming elections in Nigeria,” the statement read.

However, on Monday, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement refuting the claim of the Moroccans.

The Nigerian foreign ministry claimed that King Mohammed IV of Morocco spoke to President Jonathan from France where he had gone for a visit.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also denied that the phone call was intended to confer electoral gains on Mr. Jonathan who faces a crucial electoral challenge from an invigorated opposition in two weeks.

“Since the King was in France and not in Morocco, both leaders spoke extensively over the telephone on matters of mutual interest and concern that have nothing to do with the conduct of re-scheduled elections in Nigeria.

“It is therefore preposterous to suggest that Mr President’s telephone call to the Moroccan monarch was intended to confer any electoral advantage on the President,” the statement read.

The North African nation responded furiously Tuesday, denying the claim by the Nigerian authorities, and recalling its ambassador.

The office of Mohammed VI denied the king ever spoke to the Nigerian president. It issued a statement describing Nigeria’s claim that a discussion took place between King Mohammed and President Jonathan as “unethical practices”.
The statement said it wished to state in the “clearest and strongest terms” that “there has never been a phone conversation” between the two leaders.

“The King’s Office categorically denies the false allegations made by Nigerian authorities about an alleged phone conversation between the Sovereign and Nigerian President,” the statement said.

A statement signed by Reuben Abati, the spokesperson for Mr. Jonathan, said the furore generated over the matter was due “entirely to misinformation as President Jonathan has neither spoken with King Mohammed nor told anybody that he had a telephone conversation with the Moroccan Monarch”.

“It is true that President Jonathan has been speaking with some African leaders to seek their support for Nigeria’s candidate for the position of President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

“In continuation of his efforts in support of the candidacy of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina for headship of the AfDB, President Jonathan indicated that he would like to speak with the King of Morocco, the President of Algeria and the President of Egypt.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was consequently directed to make necessary contacts with the embassies of the three countries and arrange for President Jonathan to speak with their leaders.

“Since that directive was given, President Jonathan has spoken with the Prime Minister of Algeria and subsequently sent Vice President Namadi Sambo to Algiers as Special Envoy to follow-up on his discussions with the Algerian Prime Minister on support for Nigeria’s candidate in the coming elections for the AfDB Presidency.

“The President has, however, not yet spoken with King Mohammed VI and President Al-Sisi of Egypt as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs must know.

The statement said President Jonathan has ordered the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Aminu Wali, to urgently undertake a full investigation of the claim which emanated from the Ministry that the President spoke with King Mohammed VI.

“The investigation is to identify all those who were responsible for the unacceptable act of official misinformation which has resulted in an unnecessary diplomatic row with another country and national embarrassment,” the statement said.

“It is also expected to unveil the motives of the culprits.

“President Jonathan has also ordered that prompt and commensurate disciplinary action be taken against the culpable person or persons.

President Jonathan also criticised the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, which has since called for an investigation into the matter.

“While awaiting the outcome of the investigations, President Jonathan urges Nigerians to disregard the vituperations of opposition elements, who have, true to type, latched on to the regrettable faux pas as a fresh opportunity to unpatriotically denigrate the government of their country and advance their irresponsible quest for victory at any price in the coming elections,” the statement said.

Nigeria and Morocco have a history of frosty diplomatic relation due to the former’s support and recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic declared by the separatist group, the Polisario Front.

The Polisario Front, which is backed by Morocco’s neighbour, Algeria, seeks an independence for the Western Sahara region of Morocco, a move the Monarch has violently resisted.

Romance / 9 Things Ladies Lie About On A First Date by candycrushsoda: 9:44am On Mar 01, 2015
Ladies always want to be on their best behaviour when meeting someone for the first time.

So, of course, the chance of squeezing in a little white lie to impress her date is almost inevitable.

Guys, would you like to know some of the things ladies lie about on a first date? Cosmopolitan's Lane Moore sums them up below:

1. "It was so nice meeting you." This is the polite thing to say after spending two hours with you and nearly falling asleep while all you talked about was yourself, so I will say that so I can get to my car faster.

2. "Let's do this again some time." Maybe in 2165. I should have some time that year and god knows I can't wait to hear more of your cool racist jokes again.

3. "Here's my phone number." FYI, sometimes it doesn't work/I throw it into a river on purpose. So I might not pick up but totally take it because I'm too afraid to tell you I never want to talk to you again.

4. "I'm really busy this week." Also, please don't ask me what I'll be busy doing. I'll mostly just be praying that you don't text me and hoping I can go out with someone I actually like at some point in the next 20 years. I'll be busy with that one for a while.

5. *Laughs at joke that was not funny at all because you stared at me like if I didn't laugh you'd cry.* But truly it was a terrible joke.

6. "Tell me more about your love of waterskiing." I'm asking because I really wonder and not because I have no idea what else to talk to you about because you haven't said anything in five minutes.

7. "Yes, Star Wars is the greatest movie of all time, totally." I mean, it has almost no women in it at all and I saw it when I was, like, 10 but you seem really happy to talk about it so, sure. It's great.

8. "I just came from work!" Definitely didn't stop somewhere to do my makeup. From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. my makeup always stays in place and looks perfect and I definitely also always wear this much. Of course. Absolutely.

9. "These heels are actually super comfortable for walking." No, my feet aren't numb from the pain. I could definitely keep walking around after dinner even though you did not tell me we'd be walking for miles so I wore stilettos. This is so great.

Family / Pls Dissolve Our One-week Marriage, His Pem-pem Is Too Big, I Can’t Cope – Wife by candycrushsoda: 1:09pm On Feb 28, 2015
A Sharia Court in Samaru, Gusau, Zamfara State, was thrown into laughter during the week, when a housewife, Aisha Dannupawa, pleaded with the court to dissolve her one-week marriage to her husband, Ali Maizinari, because she could not cope with the size of his pem-pem.

When the case came up, Aisha told the court that she married her husband after the failure of her first marriage.

Aisha, who is a mother of three told the court that before she packed into her husband’s house, as the tradition demanded, she was invited into his parents house, adding that “when he came, we had sex but the experience was a nightmare. Instead of enjoying the sex, it turned out to be something else because his pem-pem was too big.”

She also revealed to the court that after the horrible experience, she took some medication, which was given to her by her mother.

“I told my mother about the experience but she told me to endure and that with time, I will be able to cope. She then gave me some drugs,” she said.

She continued, “two days later when he came to visit me, we had sex again, but the experience was too much to bear. It was then I knew that I could not continue with the marriage because of the size of his pem-pem.”

The husband, Maizinari, who did not deny the wife’s allegation, told the court that he was willing to divorce her only if she would pay back the dowry and all that he spent on her during the courtship.

When he was asked to state the total amount spent, Maizinari said that what he expected from her was N60,000.

However, the President of the court, Alhaji Mamman Shinkafi, told the couple to try to reconcile before their next date in court.

TV/Movies / Leonard Nimoy, Spock Of ‘star Trek,’ Dies At 83 by candycrushsoda: 7:52am On Feb 28, 2015
Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.

His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Mr. Nimoy announced last year that he had the disease, attributing it to years of smoking, a habit he had given up three decades earlier. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week.

His artistic pursuits — poetry, photography and music in addition to acting — ranged far beyond the United Federation of Planets, but it was as Mr. Spock that Mr. Nimoy became a folk hero, bringing to life one of the most indelible characters of the last half century: a cerebral, unflappable, pointy-eared Vulcan with a signature salute and blessing: “Live long and prosper” (from the Vulcan “Dif-tor heh smusma”).

Politics / 10 Take Aways From The GMB's Chatham House Lecture by candycrushsoda: 3:08pm On Feb 27, 2015
1. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest economy, is at a defining moment, a moment that has great implications beyond the democratic project and beyond the borders of my dear country.

2.Given increasing global linkages, it is in our collective interests that the postponed elections should hold on the rescheduled dates; that they should be free and fair; that their outcomes should be respected by all parties; and that any form of extension, under whichever guise, is unconstitutional and will not be tolerated.

3.  Driven by patriotism, influenced by the prevalence and popularity of such drastic measures all over Africa and elsewhere, we fought our way to power. But the global triumph of democracy has shown that another and a preferable path to change is possible.

4. It is much more important that the promise of democracy goes beyond just allowing people to freely choose their leaders. It is much more important that democracy should deliver on the promise of choice, of freedoms, of security of lives and property, of transparency and accountability, of rule of law, of good governance and of shared prosperity.

5. Boko Haram has sadly put Nigeria on the terrorism map, killing more than 13,000 of our nationals, displacing millions internally and externally, and at a time holding on to portions of our territory the size of Belgium. What has been consistently lacking is the required leadership in our battle against insurgency.

6. Let me assure you that if I am elected president, the world will have no cause to worry about Nigeria as it has had to recently; that Nigeria will return to its stabilizing role in West Africa; and that no inch of Nigerian territory will ever be lost to the enemy.

7. But I must emphasize that any war waged on corruption should not be misconstrued as settling old scores or a witch-hunt. I’m running for President to lead Nigeria to prosperity and not adversity.

8. As a progressive party, we must reform our political economy to unleash the pent-up ingenuity and productivity of the Nigerian people thus freeing them from the curse of poverty. We will run a private sector-led economy but maintain an active role for government through strong regulatory oversight and deliberate interventions.

9. On March 28, Nigeria has a decision to make. To vote for the continuity of failure or to elect progressive change. I believe the people will choose wisely.

10. I have heard and read references to me as a former dictator in many respected British newspapers including the well regarded Economist. Let me say without sounding defensive that dictatorship goes with military rule, though some might be less dictatorial than others. I take responsibility for whatever happened under my watch.

Below is an Agony Mail sent to NaijaHousewife, what will you advise this woman to do?

Dear NHW,

I’m actually rolling on the floor laughing. I am having a swell time.

I have been married to my hubby for 8 years and we are blessed with 4 boys which I had vaginally. After my last boy, my marriage went from bad to worse, as in, getting my hubby’s attention over the years has been very difficult. To have sex with him is even on ‘appointment’ basis. The rate at which my marriage was going, I knew that if I didn’t do something about it, it would move from worse to worst.

I sought the advice of one of my very close friends and she told me what to do. As funny as this sounds, it was working very well and I don’t want what I am doing to end.

I got a new phone and sim card, then opened new accounts on all the social media, putting all my best body parts as the display/profile picture, especially on facebook, whatsapp and  bbm. I then sent a friend request to my husband. The silly man did not waste any time in accepting my requests. At first, he played hard to get but I still relented. Because my identity is not revealed to him, I went back to being the way I used to be with him that made him fall in love with me. I flirted with him badly, and he keeps falling more and more.

You won’t believe I send pictures of my p&%**y to him every morning and if you see how excited he gets. Can you imagine, he does not recognize ‘it’!The relationship has been going on strong for 6 months. In that 6 months, if you know how much he has sent to me. He has been begging to see my face, but I know that if I try that…the relationship will be over.

Back as his wife, his attention to me has greatly waned but he has been very polite and somewhat ‘nice’. He now locks his phone, as if…

I would rather have my hubby as a boyfriend than a husband. What do you think? Should I continue or should I stop?

Nairaland / General / ISIS Militant 'jihadi John' Identified, U.S. Officials Say by candycrushsoda: 5:08pm On Feb 26, 2015
A man with a British accent seen in ISIS videos showing the beheadings of Western hostages was identified Thursday as Mohammed Emwazi, a Kuwaiti-born Londoner, according to two U.S. officials and two U.S. congressional sources briefed on the matter.

The Washington Post first reported Emwazi as "Jihadi John," citing one of Emwazi's close friends.

A Muslim-led human rights advocacy group in London, CAGE, which had contact with Emwazi over alleged "harassment" by UK security services, also said in a statement there were "some striking similarities" between 26-year-old Emwazi and the man seen in execution videos holding a knife.

London's Metropolitan Police declined to confirm the reported identity. CNN has been unable to confirm the reporting.

"We have previously asked media outlets not to speculate about the details of our investigation on the basis that life is at risk," said Commander Richard Walton of the Metropolitan Police's Counter Terrorism Command.

"We are not going to confirm the identity of anyone at this stage or give an update on the progress of this live counter-terrorism investigation."

A UK Foreign Office spokeswoman told CNN: "We will neither confirm nor deny the current reporting as to the identity of Jihadi John."

Reports indicate a middle class upbringing
The reporting in the Washington Post, quoted by Reuters, suggests Emwazi was from a middle-class family and grew up in London. He reportedly graduated from the University of Westminster in London with a degree in computer programming.

The Washington Post report, cited by Reuters, quoted unnamed friends of Emwazi as saying they believed his path to radicalization began when he went on a trip to Tanzania, in East Africa, in 2009 after graduating.

He was supposed to be going on safari there, but was reportedly detained on arrival, held overnight and then deported.

He was also detained by counterterrorism officials in Britain in 2010, Reuters said, citing the Post.

Emwazi is believed to have traveled to Syria in 2012, according to the Washington Post reporting cited by Reuters, and later to have joined ISIS there.

The advocacy group CAGE, in a statement on its website, said its research director Asim Qureshi had met with a Washington Post reporter who asked about the name Mohammad Emwazi.

CAGE's files revealed that Qureshi had worked on Emwazi's case "due to security service harassment," the statement said.

"The following day, the journalist revealed to Qureshi that she knew from her own sources, that the man known as Jihadi John was Mohammad Emwazi. The journalist showed Qureshi a video of Jihadi John in order to identify him. Qureshi clarified that while there were some striking similarities, that due to the hood, there was no way he could be 100% certain," the statement said.

Advocacy group blames UK security services
Emwazi was in communication with CAGE over the course of two years after being prevented from flying to Kuwait in 2010, the organization said.

Emwazi reportedly told CAGE at the time: "I had a job waiting for me and marriage to get started. But now I feel like a prisoner, only not in a cage, in London. A person imprisoned and controlled by security service men, stopping me from living my new life in my birthplace and my country, Kuwait."

CAGE points the finger at British security services, who they say have "systematically engaged in the harassment of young Muslims, rendering their lives impossible and leaving them with no legal avenue to redress their situation."

Qureshi drew a parallel with the case of Michael Adebolajo, convicted for the May 2013 murder in London of British soldier Lee Rigby, who said the UK domestic intelligence service MI5 had tried to recruit him.

Questions have been raised previously over whether CAGE, one of whose leading lights is Moazzam Begg, an ex-Guantanamo detainee, lends support to Islamist extremists.

On its website, CAGE says it is dedicated to securing the release of Aafia Siddiqui, nicknamed "Lady Al-Qaeda, who is jailed in the United States.

Haras Rafiq, managing director of the Quilliam Foundation, a UK-based counter-extremism think tank, told CNN that it was clear that Emwazi had been radicalized before 2010.

He said the intelligence agencies who stopped Emwazi traveling to Tanzania believed there was evidence that he intended to join the extremist group Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Haras added that it was "very upsetting that an organization like CAGE would spin this in the way that they've done," by blaming intelligence agencies.

'Notorious celebrity'
Sajjan Gohel, director of international security at the Asia Pacific Foundation, told CNN that it had been an open secret for some time that the U.S. and British intelligence communities knew Jihadi John's identity.

By not revealing it for operational reasons, he said, they may have created another issue.

"The problem was that it created more speculation in the media. In some ways, the nom de guerre of Jihadi John gave this individual a form of notorious celebrity," he said.

The man's reported background gives some clues, Gohel said. "We know that ISIS recruits a lot of Westerners who are skilled in new media, understanding of the Internet, because they use that as their platform as an oxygen of publicity."

A University of Westminster spokeswoman said: "A Mohammed Emwazi left the University six years ago. If these allegations are true, we are shocked and sickened by the news. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families."

Student safety is the university's chief concern, it said, and it is, like other colleges in London, working to implement the UK government's "Prevent" strategy to tackle extremism.

Familiar figure in videos
The masked, black-clad figure believed to be Jihadi John has become a familiar sight in ISIS' gruesome beheading videos.

He appears to be the ISIS militant shown in a video last month demanding a $200 million ransom to spare the lives of two Japanese journalists. That man looks and sounds similar to one who has appeared in at least five previous hostage videos.

U.S. and British officials have previously said they believe they know who Jihadi John is, but they haven't disclosed the information publicly.

That could be because Western intelligence agencies believe they have more to gain from keeping quiet, Aki Peritz, a former CIA officer, told CNN last month.

"They can put pressure on his family, put pressure on his friends," he told CNN. "Maybe they have a line to him. Maybe they know who his cousins are who are going to Syria who can identify him. However, if you publicly tell everybody who he is, his real identity, then maybe he'll go to ground and he'll disappear."
