The police have arrested a suspected fraudster, Uchenna Ugwu, for allegedly defrauding some women and later raping them.

The 26-year-old indigene of Enugu State, while being paraded at the Awka, Anambra State office of the Department of State Service, confessed to the crime, adding that he raped his victims to fight boredom.

It was learnt that Ugwu belonged to a syndicate, which specialised in luring ladies while pretending to be spiritualists, defrauding and raping them.

Our correspondent learnt that the mode of operation of the group was to lure women into their trap and initially tricked them into disclosing their ATM PIN codes.

It was learnt that if a victim refused to comply, the group would threaten to inflict a strange ailment on her based on a spiritual power they possess.

PUNCH Metro gathered that having succeeded, the gang members would take their victim to an arranged prayer house, where she would be compelled to take a oath never to disclose her experience to anyone.

The victim would then be raped on the pretext of making a charm for her.

Our correspondent learnt that that was how Ugwu and his group operated in Asaba, Delta State, and Obosi, in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State for a long time, before luck ran out on Ugwu.

He was arrested by the DSS based on petitions from some of the victims.

Ugwu, who said he stopped his education at primary six due to financial constraint, said he turned to crime to survive.

He said, “I joined this business to fight boredom because my former work was not going on fine and had shut down.

“My parents, who are still alive, are poor and because they cannot sponsor my education, I had to stop at primary six.”

Ugwu, while begging for forgiveness, said he was a changed man.

“I have suffered a lot in the hands of these people (DSS) and I promise not to indulge in this act again in my life; this is a lesson to every young man that doing evil is not the best,” he said.

A lady, who said she was a victim, told PUNCH Metro she believed she was hypnotised.

She said, “I believe he used a charm on me. He told me if anybody heard about what happened, I would not live to tell the story.

“To be sincere, I did not know what I was doing. I lost my sense of reasoning during the process until after he raped me.”

The Director of DSS, Alex Okeiyi, said the antics of the hoodlums were many, warning members of the public, especially females, to be cautious.

Okeiyi said, “It is noteworthy that since agencies in the state with the support of the government kept kidnappers and armed robbers in check, undesirable elements resorted to fraudulent practices including rape.”

I've seen variant of commentaries which greeted the reportage by PUNCH newspaper which claimed President Goodluck Jonathan is demanding for a refund of N2trillion misappropriated campaign funds.
 
Nigerians irrespective of the divide they are accept the aforementioned amount is obscenely outrageous.
 
Some are of a strong opinion it's impossible, some are of strong conviction it is possible.
 
Some are quick to put forward an argument that if the budgetary allocation for the year 2015 is N4.3tr, then such a large chunk will paralyse the country.
 
Those with strong conviction that such is possible will put forward an argument that Federal Inland Revenue Service raked in N4. 69tr for the year 2014.
I've seen the argument go back and forth, but none captured my conviction.
 
We are all looking at the said funds coming from captured source, what if it never did come from such?
What if it was part of the proceed of crude oil theft?
 
Crude oil theft had been on a steady arithmetic progression since 2011 at the emergence of the Presidency of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
 
It was so alarming in 2013.
 
According to an international report, as much as 400,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen daily, and Nigeria is ranked worse than Mexico, Iraq, Russia and Indonesia on the top five countries most plagued by oil theft.
 
The report put Nigeria’s losses to crude theft at $1.7 billion, about N272 billion per month.
So do the maths...
 
Let's be generous......
 
Let's assume the crude oil theft for the purpose commenced in 2013 and ended in 2014.
 
That gave them 24 months of N272bn....
 
So you see why some of us believe the N2trn is a possibility.
 
Nigerians, I might just have revealed to you all where the two trillion naira came from.

Earlier today, former Made Men Music Group (MMMG) artiste Emma Nyra denied dating her former boss Ubi Franklin in an interview with Golden Icons.

The singer swore she never dated Ubi but doesn’t mind dating Iyanya, Lynxxx or Reminisce.

Probably feeling disrespected, Ubi Franklin who normally keeps his relationships under wraps, has decided to let the cat out of the bag. The newly engaged label executive revealed he was sleeping with Emma Nyra and managing her brand at the same time.

Speaking with TheCable in a tell-it-all interview, Ubi disclosed he and the US returnee were actually an item as most fans and industry pundits suspected.

In his own words, “I was dating Emma Nyra and the relationship didn’t go as I thought it should have gone. When you’re dating somebody and you are the boss, there are things you can’t tell your wife or your girlfriend. But if you say it to an employee you are dating, they tend to misbehave. Like, if you tell the others to do something, they will obey without thinking about it. It’s not only me but it has happened to a lot of people, but that is the business lesson I’ve learnt in my life.”

Ubi who managed to keep the relationship under wraps futher stated the relationship affected his life adversely.

According to him, “That relationship made me cut off a lot of people and it also made me feel like everybody wanted the same ‘cake’ I was having. I spent a lot of time trying to beef people when I am not supposed to. It really dealt me a big blow. I decided in the end that it doesn’t make any sense and we both understood that and moved on.”

Ubi futher admitted he made terrible business decisions by investing so much money on his former girlfriend. Claiming he spent close to N30 million on Emma Nyra, Ubi said, “I don’t think that I have spent as much money on Iyanya as I’ve spent on Emma Nyra. Emma has like nine videos at about N3.5m.”

Ubi however seems to have moved on as he recently proposed to Nollywood actress Lilian Esoro and they are both planning to tie the knot later this year. He met his wife-to-be at a friend’s party and promptly told her he was interested in marriage and soon enough they maintained a low-key relationship until they both made their relationship public.

Ubi who is obviously love-struck praised his new girlfriend describing her as someone he has always wanted. He quipped, “She’s everything I can ever ask God for. She’s very brilliant, she can cook. She’s usually quiet and more reserved. She’s not one of those actresses who are just out there and all over the place. She’s very subtle with everything she does.“

There is nothing to describe what Busayo Olafare is going through at the moment as she languishes in the custody of the Department of Criminal Investigation of the Lagos State Police Command, one week after the suspected suicide of her pharmacist husband, Paul.

Paul was found dead in their Oworonsoki, Lagos home on Sunday, April 12, 2015. His death was initially suspected to have been suicide because a container of a popular rat poison, called ‘Sniper’ was found beside him.

However, his late husband’s relation told the police that his wife might have poisoned him and made
it look like suicide.

In a statement made at the DCI by a relation of the deceased, Busayo was found packing her belongings out of their house shortly after her husband’s body was discovered, which was why they suspected that she might be attempting to run away.

But Busayo, in her statement to the police, explained that right from when she first met her husband, her family and that of Paul’s have not been in good terms.
“I was in the bathroom that evening when he drank the poison called Sniper. I came out of the bathroom and saw him holding the bottle and quickly snatched it away from him, but he said he had already drunk the poison,” she told the police. “I know my husband owes a lot of money. It is at least N1m.That is the only reason my husband can kill himself. He has been very depressed because of the money he owes.”
Busayo, who got married to Paul in 2011 and had a son with him, said she had cried and wailed as she assured her in-laws that she had no reason to kill her husband but they still did not believe her.

When PUNCH's correspondent visited the DCI, some family members of Busayo, who were angry about the continued detention of the widow, said instead of allowing her to mourn, they have subjected her to more punishment.

A relation, Mr. Soyemi, who identified himself as uncle of the suspect, said he would be releasing a statement on their side of the story. The investigators at the DCI said an autopsy would soon be carried out on the deceased’s body.

A source close to the investigation said that at the moment, there was no reason to release Busayo and rule the deceased’s death as suicide.
“The wife is still the prime suspect for now,” the source said.
Paul graduated from University of Lagos in 2006 and was described by friends on his Facebook wall as a youth leader in a white garment church in Lagos.Busayo is also a graduate of UNILAG.

At the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Kenneth Nwosu, had not been reachable for comment as calls placed to him indicated his phone was switched off.

Chairman of the Ughelli branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Barr Austin Icheghe, was Thursday night murdered by yet to be identified gunmen in his residence.

The Nigerian Times gathered that the hoodlums suspected to be assassins murdered their victim in cold blood at about 9pm at the 14 Ekredjebor residence of the victim in the presence of his immediate family.

When journalists visited the deceased’s house in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State on Friday, the pool of blood resulting from severe bleeding was still on the ground with sympathizers and family members thronging the residence to mourn with the family.

A niece of the deceased, Egunor Uviesa said her uncle was shot in front of his apartment while alighting from his vehicle at the close of work late last night.

“As soon as he came down from his vehicle, they accosted him, and shot him on the head with the bullet damaging part of his face. He was immediately rushed to a private clinic here in Ughelli were he was confirmed dead.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Celestina Kalu confirmed the incident, adding that investigation into the lawyer’s death had commenced.

Many lawyers in the state have been victims of kidnapping in the last two years, while two of them Horace Eguono Dafiaghor and Samuel Ekwuaghanju were killed by suspected assassins on their way to court in Isoko last year.

Ironically, the murdered NBA chief was in the forefront of the condemnation of the shooting and attempted assassination of its Ughelli pioneer chairman, Chief Peter Wanogho, by soldiers deployed in Orogun in 2013.
