York St John University has partnered with a learning disability performance and live arts company to help develop and launch a degree-level performing arts course. It’s called “Mind the Gap” and they have launched a new performing arts course for adults with learning disabilities and autism - the "first of its kind" in the UK.

The course has been validated by York St John University and will give students a certificate in Higher Education in Performing Arts - equivalent to Level 4 or the first year of a university degree.

The three-year course will study classic and contemporary theatre, dance techniques, music production and music composition. Students will learn choreography skills, explore physical theatre, develop skills in devising theatre and participate in workshops.


Professor Matthew Reason, director of the institute for social justice at the university stated that: "Through this unique partnership with Mind the Gap we are able to challenge some of the presumptions about who education is for and who can access higher learning.

"We are hugely proud to be working with Mind the Gap on this ground-breaking initiative."


The course starts in September this year and is in high demand. The deadline for applications is Monday June 7, with auditions on Friday June 11.

Mind the Gap has been running arts training program for people with learning disabilities via its Academy since 1998. The Academy has more than doubled in size over the past few years - from 30 students a week in 2012 to almost 70 a week in 2020. Kojo Adeyemo Annan (born 25 July 1973) is a Ghanaian-Nigerian businessman and son of the late former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Njeri Waithaka
Njeri Waithaka is a Kenyan lawyer and criminologist, who served as Director of Safety at the National Transport and Safety Authority of Kenya (NTSA), from January 2016 until February 2019. Nataliey Bitature
Nataliey Bitature (born in 1989), is a Ugandan entrepreneur and executive, currently serving as CEO of Energrow. The University of Cambridge is to start offering online courses aimed at professionals worldwide who want to learn more skills. The University stated it wanted to develop its digital offering after the pandemic changed people's attitudes to online working and learning.

From September, Cambridge Advance Online will offer four short courses, expanding to 50 within five years. The courses will be led by Cambridge academics and cost about £2,000.


The courses will be created specifically for an online environment rather than trying to replicate an in-person teaching environment. They are being designed and developed by Cambridge University Press to "meet the needs of today's professional learners".


The courses will target "people around the world who are looking to upskill, gain further education and distinguish themselves in the post-pandemic job market", a spokesman said.

Vice-chancellor Prof Stephen Toope Stated that: "Although in-person teaching remains at the heart of a Cambridge education, the experience of the past year has further highlighted opportunities to enhance teaching with digital technology, and has only accelerated work already under way to expand our education offer through online learning."

Despite the government Covid-19 rules relaxing, Cardiff University has announced that online learning will continue in September stating that the Universities management will be prioritizing the safety of staff and students. However, in-person seminars, workshops, tutorials, and lab work are expected to go ahead.

A Cardiff University spokesperson stated that: “We expect that large lectures will continue to be delivered online to ensure our student and staff’s health and safety, which is always our highest priority. We will also continue to make full use of all of the teaching innovations we’ve developed over the last year. If this changes, we will update our staff and students"


“It’s important to stress that the position remains subject to change and is kept under constant review. We are awaiting further Welsh Government guidance. If this changes, we will update our staff and students"


The University has also said that it cannot rule out current safety regulations continuing into the 2021/22 academic year.

These regulations include two-meter social distancing, adhering to face-covering regulations inside buildings, one-way systems, staggered timetables, extra teaching spaces, and increased cleaning measures.

According to a Government consultation which is due to begin next month, University Tuition fees could be reduced from £9,250 to a maximum of £7,500 but critics fear arts and humanities could disappear from Universities entirely. Ministers are aiming to switch more students into science, technology, healthcare and technical courses.

Science degrees would be topped up by extra Government funding which could lead to subjects such as languages, philosophy, theology, history and the creative arts being removed from Universities. London South Bank plans to stop teaching history and human geography, Aston University is already planning to close its history and language department and Hull University is cutting degree courses in foreign languages.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson told the Conservative Home website that the number of people already taking up science and engineering-based degrees shows many are 'starting to pivot away from dead-end courses that leave young people with nothing but debt.

The move comes amid growing concern in the Treasury that the current student loan scheme is unaffordable. Peers warned it would cost about £1 trillion by 2040 with close to 83 per cent of loans never being repaid in full. Data shows that salaries for arts graduates from degree courses can earn as little as £12,000 a year.

The reason most degrees are never repaid in full is that graduates do not earn enough until they meet the £27,295 a year threshold to begin repayments.

The University of Leeds has confirmed that teaching will be “blended” for the academic year 2021/22. On the University website, under “Coronavirus – information for applicants and offer holders FAQs,” the information on next year’s blended teaching is also given.

In a presentation given by the First Year Convenor, the cohort was informed that while seminars, tutorials and laboratory learning will be in person, large lectures of over 50 students will be delivered online.

A project at Newcastle University investigating long-term inflammation of the heart following COVID-19 infection has received a huge funding boost. The UK public research University has been awarded a grant of almost £150,000 by the national charity Heart Research UK.

Around 10% of COVID-19 patients in the UK will suffer from so-called ‘long-COVID’, where symptoms continue for more than three months. In addition to causing chest infection and breathing problems, COVID-19 can also affect the heart, which is associated with poorer survival chances.

Possibly up to half of patients who are admitted to hospital with COVID-19 have ongoing inflammation of their heart muscle and vessels, independent of pre-existing conditions, severity and overall course of the acute illness, or time from the original diagnosis.

The aim of this project, which will be led by Professor Ioakim Spyridopoulos, Professor of Cardiovascular Gerontology at Newcastle University, is to study the role of the immune system in long-term heart inflammation. Professor Spyridopoulos and the team plan to:
• Identify specific blood markers that can tell us if there is still inflammation in the heart
• Understand the mechanism of this ongoing inflammation
• Discover which of the molecules in the immune response could be targeted by existing drugs to prevent future complications in patients recovering from COVID-19 and heart inflammation.

They will study blood samples from patients in the ongoing COVID-HEART trial, which involves a large UK consortium of leading researchers and clinicians led by Professor John Greenwood from the University of Leeds.

This research has the potential to identify new blood markers of heart inflammation as well as guide specific immune-therapies to prevent ongoing heart inflammation and therefore reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications in patients recovering from COVID-19.
