One of our biggest problems in this country is the way we see ourselves. We don't rate ourselves. Are you aware that some of you are even more skilled than some of the so-called professionals abroad. The technical recruiter over there is more concerned about your skillset and your ability to solve problems than the country you come from.

I have seen people apply for a job in the US and the UAE from here, they got interviewed, passed the interview and the company sponsors their visa and relocation expenses.

A machine learning engineer just left for Dubai 2 months ago from Nigeria, all expenses paid by the company - Visa, tickets and accomodation. The guy is very experienced and knows his onions. Salary is about 30, 000 AED, that's almost 3million naira and its TAX free with other benefits.

Whats am I trying to say guys, we all need to change our mentality and how we see and value ourselves first. No matter how good and qualified you are, if you always think there is a white guy somewhere who will get a chance ahead of you then you have a big problem that you have to deal with. Always believe in yourself and in your abilities.

Thats why I love the indians and the Pakistanis, despite the discrimination they have suffered in the past, they have a competitive mentality and go for what they want. Thats why they are doing well in the tech space.

tensazangetsu20:
It's not easy to get remote jobs as a generalist developer. You are competing with others in your country, developers in India, bootcamp graduates in the USA and then people from eastern Europe. Best to find a niche with few people.

Senior Software Engineer

AT AUTOMATTIC (ENGINEERING)

Remote

WordPress doesn’t try to keep its users inside walled gardens, a rare thing in a world that is dangerously moving away from the open web. Instead, WordPress gives them the freedom to build a business website, an online store, or a personal blog – the way they like it. Big sites or small, using the community-run open source project or Automattic’s , vanilla or customised with hundreds of plugins, WordPress users always get to own and control their data, their expression, and their freedom.

What have we worked on recently?

Gutenberg is a new block-level editor with clean abstractions for users, too, not just developers.
Jetpack is a plugin that brings cloud-scale features to self-hosted sites and our latest addition is Rewind, think git for WordPress sites.
WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce platform on the web.
To view more of our recent work, check out our longer product list on Automattic.com.
How do we work?

We’re kind to each other and our users – we strive to build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on delivering value to our customers.
We work as a global and distributed workforce resulting in a unique way of working built around our creed.
We offer flexible work arrangements allowing our team members to work when they feel best.
We open-source! We’re cool with open-sourcing everything except passwords, or secret keys.
We ship often, deploying many times daily with the help of peer code review, continuous integration, and our global workforce in over 70 countries.
We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels.
Enough about us, let‘s talk more about you. The Software Engineer position might be a good fit if you:

Have production experience with several programming languages. We mostly use PHP and JavaScript at Automattic – you should either be familiar with them already or the idea of using them on a daily basis should not be a blocker for you.
Have experience working on a large-scale system. Making it faster, more scalable, and fault-tolerant.
Know about systems architecture.
Are highly collaborative and you love participating in code reviews and discussions about architecture, or design.
Are passionate about and experienced in software development; in particular, advanced PHP knowledge is a plus.
Are knowledgeable about design patterns and testability; having experience with testing frameworks, performance testing and unit testing is very welcome.
Are thoughtful about product design, with good user experience instincts.
Are open and able to travel 3-4 weeks per year to meet up with your teammates in person.
Extra credit:

WordPress programming experience.
Open source contributions or contributions to programs designed to help underrepresented people enter the tech field.
Experience working on accessibility.
Familiarity with JavaScript.
Data analysis experience, and understanding of how analytics can help with product decisions.
Knowledge of tooling and build systems.
Speaking of interests and skills, here are some areas in which you can grow and have further impact in the future at the company:

Leadership – we offer a variety of leadership options to those who have interest, including becoming a team lead and managing releases.
Learning and development – we have a generous personal development budget and encourage you to grow your skills through courses, books and conferences.
Architecture – we encourage developers to develop expertise in the systems they work with, guide their evolution and mentor other developers working on them.
Engineering effectiveness – we believe in helping other developers become more effective through tools, practices, cross-team collaborations, and process improvements.
These are exciting times at Automattic and you’ll have a unique opportunity to shape the future of our products. Join us! We look forward to hearing from you.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Automattic

We’re improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in the tech industry. At Automattic, we want people to love their work and show respect and empathy to all. We welcome differences and strive to increase participation from traditionally underrepresented groups. Our DEI committee involves Automatticians across the company and drives grassroots change. For example, this group has helped facilitate private online spaces for affiliated Automatticians to gather and helps run a monthly DEI People Lab series for further learning. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is a priority at Automattic, though our dedication influences far more than just Automatticians: We make our products freely available and translate our products into and offer customer support in numerous languages. We require unconscious bias training for our hiring teams and ensure our products are accessible across different bandwidths and devices. Read more about our dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Curious who works in engineering at Automattic? Meet our Code Wranglers – Brandon, Jeremy, Mark, Jennifer, Roy and Kat!

What to Expect

We know applying to jobs can be stressful and we want to ease the stress by giving clear expectations upfront about our process. We’ve outlined everything you need to know here including all of the steps in the process as well as how we approach hiring. We’re always iterating so if you happen to join us in the process, please feel free to offer feedback on what else we can include there!

10 Commandments of Data Science

1. Focus mainly on solving the problem and not on tools, technologies, and models.

2. Data will never be clean or easily available. Data gathering and cleaning will take 80% of your time and effort.

3. Don’t underestimate the power of Excel and SQL - they are still two of the most useful tools for data analysis.

4. Simple models such as Linear or Logistic Regression will be good enough for many problems. You don’t need neural networks to solve every problem.

5. Textbook solutions may not work for most of the practical problems. You will need to try new approaches and innovate as required.

6. Nobody can remember everything. On the job, you can always use Google, Stack Overflow etc.

7. Learn Data Visualisation and develop the ability to explain your key insights in simple terms - such skills will be very useful with non-technical and business stakeholders.

8. Learn PowerPoint and storytelling - people may not appreciate your great work if you can’t convince them with your story.

9. Data Science is evolving rapidly. Please learn continuously, else you may become obsolete soon.

10. Focus mainly on solving the problem and not on tools, technologies, and models.

You just nailed it. That my point exactly. People learn and comprehend in different ways. Saying watching videos is not enough to become grounded is totally off the point. I learnt everything I know in Data Science through videos and online Bootcamp. I'm still a work in progress though, Nobody knows it all. But I can tell you for free that I have learnt enough to land me an entry-level data science role. I got a couple of invites for interview for data science jobs in the USA, I couldn't attend because they all want candidates residing in the US even though its remote. The idea was to convert remote workers to full-time after covid subsides.

I just want to enjoin everyone striving hard to learn data science not to give up. There a long road ahead, but appreciate yourself for what you have learnt so far. It is not easy to learn excel alone to mastery level not to talk of SQL and Machine Learning that requires a lot of complex algorithm for building your models. Have a plan, draw a learning schedule for your self and give yourself timelines. Don't try to learn everything at once. Take it one step at a time.

What seems difficult today, will seem like a stroll in the park to you in a couple of months from now with hard work, consistency and dedication. Download different data sets on Kaggle and try to make meaning out of them using what you have learnt so far, be it excel, PowerBI, SQL, TABLEAU or Machine learning.

Believe me, you have what it takes to become a full-fledged data scientist.

Don't be discouraged guys. We will all come back here one day to share our story of how we landed a great job through our skills.

KEEP GRINGING.

Abcruz:
I beg to differ. People acquire knowledge in different ways either in books, video tutorials or both. It's all about identifying the best method that suits you. I learnt the basics of Python from YouTube and not from books.

A good practically oriented video tutorial is more than enough to get one started in building projects. If you intend to know all and all about data science by reading books upon books, 10 years from now you'll be amazed to see how much you still need to know cos it's an endless journey.

Quote me anywhere there's no professional programmer that has all it takes and codes without looking up solutions to errors.

The most important thing about data science and programming in general is your projects and portfolios not how much you know cos even those at google knows they're still learning.
