Shut up there with your popular and foolish mentality. It is very common to Nigerian Engineering graduates to be defending their ignorance with this popular statement: "We are trained to design and not to repair". That is a big fallacy. The essence of obtaining a formal Education is to learn everything related to your course of study. An engineering graduate must be able to carry out repair appropriately.

The only statement that would be valid is: "An Engineering graduate is better than an artisan engineer because
I. An Engineering graduate can design and manufacture but an artisan engineer can not.
2. An Engineering graduate repair ability is unlimited but an artisan engineer repair ability is limited."
There is nothing wrong with knowing how to repair. Infact it is essential for every engineer who designs to know how to repair and in other to make better and more efficient designs. But the focus of a formal engineering program is to learn to design and fabricate not repair otherwise just do a short training or something.

Knowing how to fix should just be a part of the design process not the main aim. You should be an expert in designing not fixing. Im tired of seeing mechanical engineering job offers meant for technicians. Nigerians like pushing mee's toward things like welding, auto repair, ac repair and installation, maintenance of equipment when they should be doing more things like hvac, machine design prototyping and fabrication, biomedical designs, vibrations, fea, quality control, product design. We have enough people that can do maintenance that arent even mee's. what of designs?

Dey one side with your repair mentality. You must be a nigerian university lecturer. Tell me why are mee's making dustbin parker with sheetmetal in 500lvl?

What is the business of a mechanical engineer with replacing piston in a workshop?

Is he a technician?

Mechanical engineering just useless for Nigeria.

Na to operate air compressor and HVAC they do for companies in Nigeria.

Highly underutilized.
Abeg help me tell am. Its just sad how people all think we should become mechanics or something similar. We are trained to be designers not repairers. Yes its an option to pick maintenance aspect for career but it is not why people study mee.
Mee's are meant to make the manual not use it.

Please for posterity sake. what are the other companies if you can call them.. I invested a lot of time learning cad and fea (especially for vibrations) and i dont really know where to apply for job and engaging on personal projects is expensive and time consuming. Its just is not rewarding as i cant find what to do with my knowledge.
I even got cswp in solidworks as for fea. . i quickly realised solidworks is ok for linear analysis but the nonlinear analysis capabilities and results are not sophisticated enough. Its been a while but my knowledge on mech is rusting a bit and im slowly transitioning to computer tech like 80% of other people who study mee in d first place.
What are the opportunities for mee graduates that involve design and not technician or maintenance jobs?
Sorry about d rant. Just looking for some guidance or advice. Just saw you reply too

shocked

See my fellow 1st class degree holder in Engineering.
Can someone tell this boy that with such brains, he has no reason being in Nigeria, he should be in one Aerodrome in Ukraine or in an auto assembly plant in Sweden.

Most people here may not know, but I graduated as well with a 5.0 CGPA and first class degree in Kpekus Engineering.
There is no rusty crevice that wasn't brought back to life after being worked on by me.

But it is not by getting a CGPA of 5.0 in Mechanical Engineering in the classroom, can he replace pistons and rings in the workshop?

Can he use an Allen key and '15 combined' perfectly with just his left hand while his right hand romances the boobs of an agbo seller as he replaces the 'half-and-top' of a faulty V8 engine without being distracted?

If he can, then he is just as good as me in this thing called engineering.
He's an engineer not a technician. He's meant to design not repair. Smh
