The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 23 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, on Saturday said 24 operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission arrested his son-in-law, Alhaji Babalele Abdullahi.

He said Abdullahi, who is also finance director of Atiku Group of Companies, was arrested after the EFCC officials in two vehicles, an 18-seater Toyota bus with registration Abuja CS 522 RSH and a Hilux van, had invaded the Maitama residence of his son-in-law at about 8.30am.

A statement by Atiku’s media adviser, Mr Paul Ibe, said the EFCC officials were, however, not given access into the house until Abdullahi’s lawyers arrived.

He said, “In a desperate move to have Atiku Abubakar concede and congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari, officials of the EFCC at about 8.30am today (Saturday) invaded the Maitama residence of Babalele. They were, however, not given access into the house until his lawyers arrived.

“The EFCC agents numbering about two dozens came in two regular vehicles, an 18-seater Toyota bus (with registration Abuja CS 522 RSH) and a Hilux van. They came with a search warrant to search the house and the office of Babalele and found nothing incriminating.

“They then proceeded to his office at Oakland Centre in Maitama and found nothing incriminating there. However, they took away some documents of landed property. Not done, the EFCC officials stormed his Wuse residence where they again found nothing incriminating after the search.

“Afterwards, Babalele was taken away to the EFCC office in Wuse to make a statement alongside Mr Lawan Ayuba. It was gathered that the petition relied upon to invade the residence and the office of Babalele was authored by a brother of the wife of President Buhari.”

Ibe stated that as a law-abiding citizen, Atiku recognised the constitutional role of the EFCC and indeed any other agency of the government to carry out investigations, but would not be cowed by any attempt to blackmail him into mortgaging his mandate.

The statement reported Atiku as assuring Nigerians that under no circumstance would he mortgage what he called the mandate of Nigerians, which he claimed was freely expressed on February 23.

Nigerian stand-up comedian, Alibaba, has shared a story of how he made his first N1m in the industry.

Alibaba, whose real name is Atunyota Alleluya Akpobome, recently marked his 30th anniversary on stage.

In a press briefing recently, the ace comedian reflected on his journey into the entertainment industry, saying he had to convince his family to embrace his craft in the early years of his career.

“Since I discovered my talent, I have worked to see that a lot more could be done with it. My growth in the last 30 years has been in phases. The first phase was when I discovered my talent in Ekpoma (in Edo State) in 1998. Between that time and 1993, I had to convince my family that comedy what was what I wanted to do.

“I figured I had to build awareness and embrace opportunities; I had to promote my talent through television stations, night clubs, universities and newspaper houses. After so much promotion, by 1998, I had built some momentum, and the commercialisation of my comedy took place.

“In 1996, I joined Guinness to promote a brand and that was when I made my first N1m. It gave me the strength to continue and I realised that there was more to my talent. Between 1998 and 2003, I started commercialising comedy; I had to get an office, register my business, brand and network.

“In the fourth phase, I started diversifying by writing and speaking. I used to do stage plays as well, but I figured I wasn’t going to make as much money as I wanted (from it), so I devoted my time to stand-up comedy alone.

“Between 2008 and 2013, I realised it was time to consolidate my career. We had to build institutions, create structures and also work towards having a media empire. Within that time, I started organising my comedy shows. There was a need to reposition myself as the frontline comedian. In 2016, I performed comedy for six hours because I wanted something that would spread around the social media space,” he said.

The comedian also spoke about the memorable lessons life had taught him in the last 30 years. He also explained why many people refer to him as the father of stand-up comedy.

The dilemma of family entertainment in Nigeria
“It taught me that whatever I do to be successful, there was a need for me to also make others successful by opening doors for people. When I started doing stand-up comedy, there were no one doing it at the time; however, there were masters of ceremonies who dabbled into comedy like Bisi Olatilo, and Tunji Shotimirin. These people were plying the trade a bit but they were not fully into stand-up comedy.

“When I came on the scene, I devoted my time fully to stand-up comedy. I continued to struggle in the career path because I knew I would make it a commercial success. And because of this, I had a head start. This could justify why people call me the father of stand-up comedy,” he said.

When asked about his jokes about former President Olusegun Obasanjo and how the ex-President used to laugh over them; he noted that he had been hosting events for bigwigs in the Nigerian military before making jokes about him.

“The ex-President, Obasanjo, wasn’t just promoting me; he recognised stand-up comedy and gave it a boost. After a while, he got used to me and started recommending me for events he attended. A lot of state governors, who used to attend those presidential dinners, used to invite me to their events. For him to have the thick skin to accommodate my jokes about him made them feel comfortable with me.

“I felt comfortable performing in front of military men because I had done events for military chiefs like Sani Abacha, Ibrahim Babangida and Tunde Idiagbon. When I performed at military barracks, I could get away with some things because I knew the ropes. I studied the origin of stand-up comedy and I knew it started with the blacks. I knew how to tell jokes without offending anybody. I knew there was a thin line between being funny and being offensive,” he said.

There was mild drama, yesterday on Aganmwonyi street, off Goodwill Road, Benin, Edo State, as a client failed to pay the agreed sum to a sex worker.

The man (in striped shirt) had initially agreed to pay the sum of N7k, but when they were done he gave her only N1k.

However, a scene created by the aggrieved lady, attracted many passersby and to prevent a total breakdown of law and order, a man (wearing cap) eventually gave her the balance.

Popular dancer, Korra Obidi’s recent photos make pregnancy looks easy and fun. Needless to say, she seems to be enjoying every day as a pregnant woman.

Obidi, who is married to a Caucasian, told Sunday Scoop that she was in love with her new looks, including the shape of her buttocks. She said, “Every entertainer fears that pregnancy might make her lose relevance. However, life goes on. If my fans cannot appreciate my growth, then they were never my fans to begin with.

“I just started having fun. I love my new look, my baby bump, my huge tits and my buttocks now. My real fans love it too; a true fan’s love is unconditional

Reacting to a former Big Brother Naija contestant, Gifty’s attack on pregnant women dancing, Obidi said, “Research shows that dancing is a great cardio exercise during pregnancy. I have not stopped dancing because I became pregnant. Literacy is essential. Before putting out your opinions about a subject, do the adequate research.”

Commending her husband’s support for her, she said once one was married to one’s true love, the burden of pregnancy would be shared.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Saturday monitored the general elections in several parts of the country.

The anti-corruption agency stated that the move was to curtail the incidents of vote-buying, a practice that has characterised some previous elections, especially during the Osun State governorship polls which held last year.

The commission had earlier asked citizens with authentic information that could lead to the arrest of culprits of vote-buying to reach it for the prompt response.
