How to Repair a Rack and Pinion Leak
Step 1 - Park Car on Ramp
To get at the rack and pinion on your car you will need to crawl under the vehicle. To do this you should do it as safely as possible. A pair of heavy duty car ramps is a good option for lifting your car enough to work under it. Locate the ramps on a flat surface and carefully drive the front wheels onto them. When you reach the top of the ramps, then put the car in park and turn off the engine. Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels so that it does not accidentally roll.
Step 2 - Clean off Hoses
Take some time to clean off the hoses from the rack and pinion of any grease, dirt and fluids. This will help you better determine where the leak is coming from. Look at the overall condition of the hoses while you are cleaning them. You may find that they are dry and brittle and are the cause of your leak.
Step 3 - Drain Power Steering Fluid
Remove the bottom bolt on the power steering unit and drain out the fluid. Remove the fluid as you will not be using it again. You should always use fresh power steering fluid.
Step 4 - Replace Hoses
The power steering hoses that are connected to the rack and pinion are going to be connected with simple hose clamps. These can be removed by either compressing the tabs with a pair of pliers, or using a screwdriver to back out the retaining screw. Once you have loosened up the clamps remove the hoses and replace with new ones.
Step 5 - Replace Gaskets
There are a few gaskets on the rack and pinion assembly that may need to be replaced if they are dried out and worn.
Step 6 - Use Some Brake Fluid
Many people who have had some rack and pinion problems with leaking will use some brake fluid into the power steering reservoir. They do not replace the power steering fluid, but will add it into the mix. This has been successful as a short term fix in order to get you to a repair center.
Step 7 - Replace Rack and Pinion
Some leaks are caused because the rack and pinion is failing. When this happens you can use some Leak Stop to seal up some of the cracked areas, but you will need to replace the rack and pinion to stop the leaks entirely. AutosBay: I trust your question is one of affordability. You have to remove the rack to replace the seal. the question is--how bad is the leak? But to be honest, you can buy a lot of power steering fluid for a lot less than the cost of removing and replacing the rack.
The most cost effective solution is to buy a few bottles of power steering fluid and keep an eye on the level of the fluid in your power steering reservoir, note when you fill it up and when it needs to be topped off again, also note how many ounces you put in. I would recommend initially checking the level every day for a week and if you don't see it going down (you probably won't) then go to checking it once a week. I think you'll find you can probably drive for a long time just topping the fluid level off.
hope that helps Thank you so much sir. You captured the situation quite aptly. The leakage started when I least expected it. So yes, it's a question of affordability. Secondly, the situation is so bad that it almost doesn't retain the fluid for 20 minutes. I can only replace it at the end of November. I will however try your suggestion of keeping an eagle eye on it while I top fluids for the next one week or two. Thanks again for your time. |

Politics › 2015: Akwa Ibom Community Adopts Okon In Abuja by castrokins(op): 9:23am On Oct 18, 2014*. Modified: 3:11pm On Oct 20, 2014 |
Nigeria is at the threshold of an important year. 2015 is an important year in Nigeria. More so, our democracy. 2015 marks the end of one republic since the return of democracy in Nigeria and importantly, the beginning of another, a new strata and mantle for leadership.
Across the country and in Akwa Ibom State in particular, there have been varied and vested interests and aspirations. Uyo Senatorial District, for instance, has seen a case of people calling for human capital motivated leadership from all aspirants asking to represent the district in the 2015 general elections. It is a case of people making efforts to move away from status quo. Their reason: Stomach Infrastructure, though necessary, cannot outlive it taste per material time. That is why, to the people of Uyo Senatorial District, resident in Abuja, Prince Nsikak Okon commands their supports and endorsement.
In a grand reception on 15 October to honor their illustrious Prince and amiable business tycoon, the people of Akwa Ibom State residents in Abuja unanimously endorsed the Senatorial ambition of Prince Nsikak Okon on the grounds of merit, proven track record, business acumen and negotiation prowess that they believe will work in their favour in the next Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Speaker further, the President and Convener of the assembly, Akparawa Tony Okon, maintained that Prince Okon’s many successes on life-touching ventures informed their decision to pitch their tent with him. He said his group painstakingly considered all aspirants running for ticket to represent the district and found Prince Okon the most merited, based on credible and incorruptible records of the businessman at their disposal. He argued that the businessman has the veracity to negotiate and draw Federal interest as well as win them life-changing votes on the floor of the red chambers.
He described the businessman as selfless, citing many scholarships and people-oriented project initiated by Prince Okon through his foundation. He told the session that Nsikak Okon resides in Abuja and was well aware of the intricate nature of the politics in the Capital. On his part, the Secretary of the group said that Prince Okon is blessed with exceptional developmental goals and a winning agenda. He added that Prince Okon is a grassrooter, saying it was what informed his appointment as Strategic Leader, Grassroots Youth Movement for Late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua and also Akwa Ibom State Co-ordinator, Neighbough2Neighbour Initiative. In his reaction, Prince Okon while commending the people for their overwhelming support, promised them freshness in approach to Legislative business as it concerns Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria. He further assured them of his total commitment to the people, while promising more people-oriented schemes and effective representation. He frowned at the engagement deficits suffered by Akwa Ibom State at Directorate level, promising to liaise with the State Government to redress the trend, support women, as well as youths in area of job creation. He also assured on collaboration with Akwa Ibom indigenes in the diaspora who are bosses in their own right to bring meaningful impressions to the State.

Politics › Like Ime Usua (mfr), Like Nsikak Okon by castrokins(op): 10:28pm On Oct 03, 2014 |
It was Thursday, 25th September, 2014 and the occasion was the 2014 National Award Ceremony. A little known and less fancied Akwa Ibom man of unparalleled integrity was to be honored with ‘Member of the Federal Republic’ (MFR). No, it was not Godswill Obot Akpabio who can only be described by his uncommon transformation of Akwa Ibom State. It was also not Arc. (Obong) Victor Attah, the former Governor of the State who’s antecedents and manner he piloted the just concluded National Conference drew widespread accolades and encomiums by his kinsmen. It was Ime Usua, an Abuja airport cabman, an Akwa Ibom man of unequalled reputation for integrity who returned $120,000 left in his cab by his foreign passengers who he earlier dropped off at a hotel in the Capital.
It is quite uncommon to read stories of integrity in Nigeria, but Usua, even as a cab driver who made a paltry N4000 from the foreigners and with a large, highly dependent family, it makes more sense that a man struggling to meet family needs, could be as upright as to return over N18m to it owners.
No, the police did not go after him, he was not coerced; he simply took a briefcase he discovered in his cab after the days’ job and headed back to the hotel where he had dropped off his foreign passengers. And even as the event took place in 2007, the administration of Goodluck Jonathan honored him in 2014. This is indicative that integrity pays after all. Giving back to the people what belongs to them pays. But as we have seen overtime, it is almost non-existent that the people get what belongs to them. The people’s rights are brazenly taken away from them in tyranny and our society is riddled in all forms of corruption and distrust.
Can there be another Ime Usua? YES, we found another and from Akwa Ibom State. He is Prince Nsikak Okon. He is asking to represent the people of Uyo Senatorial District in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This is one man without an iota of dent to his name and though I did not set out to write on his aspirations, it is important to mention he is one, Uyo Senatorial District can trust to return to them what belongs to them.
