There are institutions that must be independent for a nation state to be effectively govern, devoid of injustice and corruption The electoral umpire (INEC) The judiciary (JUDGES) One of the ways to uphold their powers and independence is to establish a law to pay their emulmument into a sovereign account. From where they collect their salaries and entitlements. He who pays the piper dictates the tunes The above are the two institutions that politicians uses to rig elections in Nigeria. It's unfortunate that tribal and regional politics still holds sway in Nigeria. No one wants to fight or criticize his tribes man, even when he's not getting it right . The legal team representing Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has served the leadership of the National Assembly with a certified true copy (CTC) of the Federal High Court judgement mandating her immediate recall to the Senate. In a strongly worded letter dated July 1, 2025, the lawyers also declared that the female Senator will resume her legislative duties on Tuesday, July 15, in line with the directive of the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako. The court judgement, delivered on July 4, 2025, ruled that the embattled Senator’s six-month suspension by the Senate was unlawful, excessive, and a clear violation of her constitutional right to represent her constituents. The court held that the action contravened Section 63 of the 1999 Constitution and flouted the Senate Standing Orders, which limit such suspensions to just 14 days. Acting through the law firm M.J. Numa & Partners, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team emphasised that the judgement was binding under Section 318 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and called on the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA) to act swiftly and facilitate Natasha’s return to the red chamber without further delay. “In consequence, Her Lordship directed that the Senate has the power and indeed should exercise that power to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and allow her to resume representation of the constituents who duly elected her,” the letter stated. Justice Nyako dismissed the legality of the extended suspension and affirmed that the relevant provisions of the Senate Standing Orders, particularly Order 66(4) of the 2023 edition, override the Legislative Houses (Powers & Privileges) Act when it comes to internal disciplinary procedures. The judge further described the 180-day suspension—equivalent to a full legislative session—as an overreach of parliamentary power and a calculated disruption of the senator’s constitutional mandate. Reiterating the urgency of the matter, the legal team warned against any attempt to defy the court’s authority, stressing in their communication that “nature abhors a vacuum” and that the constituents of Kogi Central must not remain unrepresented. The 2027 presidential poll may after all not be a smooth ride for the All Progressives Congress as the anti-President Bola Tinubu coalition last week adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their preferred party to realise their political goal. AdedayoAkinwale reports For far too long, Nigerians as well as political actors have decried that the lack of a formidable opposition party that would pose a serious challenge and threat to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was not healthy for the country’s democracy. But if the internal crisis that plagued the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) was anything to go by, then the reasons for their concerns were nothing but genuine. Also, the recent gale of defections by some National Assembly members, state governors, council chairmen and chieftains of opposition from the PDP and LP to APC initially killed any hope of having a strong opposition party to challenge the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections. Though, while all these were going on, the opposition leaders continued strategising on how best to take the battle to the ruling party. Right from the onset, the opposition leaders agreed that adopting PDP was never an option. Nevertheless, all cards were put on the table, whether to adopt an existing party or float a new party all together. The parties considered for adoption were the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). But the once docile opposition coalition pulled a stunt last Wednesday by adopting ADC as the preferred platform by the opposition coalition to wrest power from President Bola Tinubu and the APC. It was also brought to the fore that the initial defection of the former Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to SDP was part of the plan to confuse the ruling party so that the political talks with the leadership of ADC was not thwarted by APC. Prior to the unveiling of ADC, the anti-Tinubu coalition led by former Vice President AtikuAbubakar sold a dummy to the ruling party by submitting a letter of intent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the All Democratic Alliance (ADA). While that was going on, the opposition coalition was perfecting its agreement with the leadership of ADC led by Ralph Nwosu. However, Tinubu, being a strong member of the coalition in 2013 that later metamorphosed into APC, pressed a panic button by forcing the former National Chairman of APC, Dr. AbdullahiGanduje to resign his position. Nevertheless, the decision of the President to sacrifice Ganduje to thwart the threat posed by the Atiku-led coalition amounted to nothing with the coalition growing stronger by the day since its unveiling. Be that as it may, the ruling APC would be doing a lot of harm to itself if it chooses to dismiss the political heavy weight that have joined forces together and chosen the ADC as their party of choice. With the grand entrants of ADC as a formidable political party ahead of the 2027 elections, the ruling party has been enveloped by doubts and fear. The reason, many say, may not be unconnected with the economic policies of the current administration that has forced more people into the pool of poverty and created hardship in the land. Without being dishonest, while it may be tough at the moment, President Tinubu’s economic policies are actually laying the foundation for future growth. In the same vein, whatever policy the President is currently implementing were all contained in his Renewed Hope Agenda which he campaigned with. As it stands, in the next coming days, weeks or months, more high profile politicians and even governors are expected to join the train of ADC, the newest bride in Nigeria’s political arena. Interestingly, while the former President of the Senate, David Mark emerged as the protem chairman, one of Tinubu’s former ‘boys’ and erstwhile Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola emerged as the National Secretary. Aregbesola, whose political career has been floating and grasping for breath has now been revived with this new appointment. Speaking at the event, Mark raised the alarm that the labour of the country’s heroes was under vicious attack and the country faces mortal danger. Against this background, he said the coalition was meant for all Nigerians who share in their belief that everyone — the young and the old, man and woman, rich and poor, living with disabilities or not, town dwellers or villagers, to save our country. He emphasised that the coalition was also meant for all suffering Nigerians who are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet; for whom the next meal is not guaranteed and to all the citizens who believe that Nigeria’s democracy is worth fighting for, this coalition is for you. Expectedly, analysts are of the opinion that if the ADC is actually serious about wresting power from Tinubu in 2027, the opposition party should consider Atiku and Peter Obi joint ticket. They believed that the performance of Obi in the 2023 presidential election was an indication that being on a joint ticket with the former Vice President would pose a serious threat to Tinubu and APC. During the 2023 elections, all the traditional strongholds of the PDP were won by Obi who has an army of youths in the ‘Obidients Movement’ championing his campaign. Also, with the coming together of political forces, Atiku, a veteran in the game and with a strong grip on states in the North will complement Obi’s strong hold on the South and parts of the North Central. Speaking with THISDAY, a Legislative Consultant in Abuja, Mr. AkinloyeOyeniyi, was of the view that in every political calculation, a stiff opposition such as ADC, would actually pose a significant threat to the ruling party. He said: “We all know in the Nigerian democratic setting, power can only be taken through political parties. So, no matter how whirlwind an opposition is, if such does not have a sure political footing, it will end up being a waste of chase. “We have seen how the SDP was initially touted, the ADA and eventually the Ralph Nwosu faction of ADC. Then what followed was the entire leadership of that faction resigning to the now David Mark-led leadership. “Apart from the Nwosu-led NWC not having a sure footing due to the litigation upon its neck, the abrupt change of the party leadership is total contravention of the Electoral Act and INEC Guidelines. The law is that, any convention, Congress or meeting where a political party would be appointing or electing an officer, shall have a 21-days notice to INEC. But in this stance, that was not the case. The implication is that whatever is being done in that party is unknown to law. I do not think so.” Oyeniyi feared that the potency of Atiku-Obi ticket expired in 2023, adding that in 2027, if Obi is not put forward as the presidential candidate, his obedient movement might withdraw their support. “The 2027 dynamics are different from that of 2023. The Christian middlebelt that were afraid of muslim/muslim in 2023, the current political patronage spread of the entire Northern ethnic groups unlike before, PDP not being part of the coalition and other factors are what will shape the 2027 outcome” he posited. In his submission, the running mate to Obi in 2023 elections, Datti Baba-Ahmed, while featuring on Prime Time on ARISE News TV Channel, said while he has not left the Labour Party, he was already considering joining the coalition. He, however, feared that the coalition was playing the same game Tinubu played in 2013 that subsequently led to the emergence of Muhammadu Buhari as the President in 2015. He was quick to add that while Buhari was the distant Messiah in the political chess of 2015, the ADC coalition perfectly lacks that and as such the primary election would be tight and close. His words: “I have not left Labour Party. I am considering the coalition who have adopted ADC right now. Don’t consume the excitement, and don’t be consumed by the excitement. It’s all about excitement, understandably so, because Nigerians are depressed as much as they are oppressed. So this excitement can easily consume everyone. “The opposition is right in all that it is doing. I agree wholeheartedly in coming together, the principles behind it, the objectives of it, are all correct, but you’re also playing somebody else’s game. This game is Tinubu’s game, and I’m not praising him in any way whatsoever. But everyone must understand the situation as it were. President Buhari, after losing the third time, cried to the world that he’s done with politics. And that’s when it began. Tinubusaw the opportunity, brought him back into the fold, added the South West and the Tinubu influences to his existing 12 million votes. “The coalition now is playing the scripts of Tinubu. I believe in the coalition, don’t get me wrong, but you don’t have to play the game the way he did. There are structural misgivings in the coalition, as it were today. Buhari was the distant anointed. This opposition does not have a distant anointed. So there will be a very close gap, and so there will be a very tight struggle, possibly, not so clean primaries.” Meanwhile, the Presidency last Thursday described the newly-formed opposition coalition under the ADC as a hollow alliance of disgruntled politicians, warning that the group poses a threat to Nigeria’s democratic progress and stability. The Presidency described the promoters as political “desperados” driven not by ideology or national interest but by personal ambition and bitterness towards President Tinubu. In all, the Atiku-Obi joint ticket is the best shot the ADC could fire that may likely put the back of Tinubu and APC on the ground in 2027. thisdaylive.com |
WARRI – A prominent Urhobo son and respected Niger Delta voice, Olorogun Victor Okumagba, the ldjede of Okere Urhobo Warri kingdom has written a strongly-worded open letter to Urhobo leaders, cautioning against what he described as “misguided attacks” on Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), a firm playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s fight against oil theft. In the open letter made available to the press, Olorogun Victor Okumagba expressed disappointment over calls made by some Urhobo leaders particularly Urhobo Progress Union ( UPU ) recent call for the removal of Tantita from Urhobo territories, describing such calls as “a departure from reason, history, and the collective interest of the Niger Delta.” “Let us be reminded,” he wrote, “that the Urhobos were present when the late Capt. Hosa Okunbo from Benin, Edo State, held this same contract for over eight years—covering Urhobo lands. During that period, pipeline vandalism and environmental destruction were at their worst, and Nigeria’s crude oil production fell to 650,000 barrels per day. Yet, there was no protest from Urhobo leaders.” Olorogun Victor Okumagba stressed that since Tantita, led by Chief Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), took over the surveillance contract, Nigeria has witnessed unprecedented results — oil theft has drastically reduced, crude oil production has rebounded to over 1.8 million barrels per day, and the environment in host communities is being restored. He continued: “How can we now turn around to question the competence and credibility of a company that has done what others failed to do for nearly a decade? This is not about ethnicity — this is about performance, national interest, and the survival of our region’s economy.” He also pointed out the double standards being applied by some leaders saying: “After the death of Capt. Hosa, his son-in-law, the current Olu of Warri, still retains larger surveillance acreages than Tantita, yet there’s no protest against that. Why then are some people sponsoring protests against Tantita’s smaller, more effective operations?” Calling for wisdom, unity, and strategic thinking among Urhobo leaders, Olorogun Victor Okumagba urged the Urhobo Leaders to resist external influences , political distractions, and instead protect initiatives that genuinely serve the Urhobo nation and Niger Delta’s collective good. Having appreciated the management of Tantita Security Services for the enormous task undertaken and the profound achievements recorded so far, Olorogun Victor Okumagba urged the company ” Tantita ” to engage more Urhobo youths in its operations in Urhobo land to promote inclusivity and deepen local participation. He emphasized that the security and economic future of the Niger Delta relies heavily on cooperation among all ethnic nationalities and stakeholders, adding that increased youth engagement would foster a greater sense of ownership and responsibility in protecting national assets. “We must not allow narrow interests or ethnic rivalry to derail what is clearly a national success story. Tantita is not the enemy. Oil theft is. Let’s choose facts over sentiment. Let’s stand with results,” he concluded. Gazette |
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested Emami Ajetsibogho, popularly known as “Warri Kinsman,” over the alleged smuggling of 414.2 kilograms of cannabis sativa. SaharaReporters gathered that Ajetsibogho, who is the younger brother of former Niger Delta militant and politician Chief Ayiri Emami, was apprehended on June 25, 2025, by operatives attached to the Lagos State Command. The illicit substance was allegedly concealed in several bags, sealed in white and black nylon sachets. The Warri South-born suspect has long been considered influential in his community, with reports indicating he had previously evaded multiple arrest attempts. Sources told SaharaReporters that the NDLEA is allegedly covering up Ajetsibogho’s arrest due to his familial ties to Emami. “The NDLEA is covering up the case of Emami Ajetsibogho caught with drugs because he is a brother of the former Niger Delta militant, Ayiri Emami,” one of the sources said. “That is why NDLEA has not been quick to announce his arrest the way they announce other arrests; it is because of his brother’s influence.” Meanwhile, SaharaReporters has gathered that the suspect remains in NDLEA custody while the investigation is ongoing. Femi Babafemi, spokesperson for the NDLEA, could not be reached for comment when contacted. In April, President Bola Tinubu congratulated Ayiri Emami on his 50th birthday. In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Tinubu extolled Emami’s dedication to national development. The president commended the Itsekiri chief for his significant contributions to peacebuilding, the protection of vital oil and gas assets, and the promotion of unity and stability in the Niger Delta. He also highlighted Emami’s efforts in consolidating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State and noted his steadfast loyalty to the Tinubu family. “President Bola Tinubu congratulates Chief Ayirimi Emami, a prominent Itsekiri leader, on his 50th birthday, April 26,” the statement reads. “Chief Emami is a politician, businessman, and philanthropist. “President Tinubu commends the Itsekiri leader for his commitment to nation-building, epitomised by his valiant efforts in peacebuilding and in ensuring the safety and sustenance of critical oil and gas resources, as well as in fostering unity and stability in the Niger Delta region. “I thank Chief Emami for his support over the years for me and my wife, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, a daughter of Itsekiriland, standing with us before and during the 2023 elections.” Saharareporters |
