Wall Street sees ‘no alternative’ to U.S. stocks in 2025. Here’s why.

U.S. stocks are expected to continue their streak of world-beating returns in 2025, according to Wall Street strategists.

Large-capitalization U.S. stocks have outperformed virtually all comers over the past 15 years. According to some of the world’s largest investment banks, that is unlikely to change in 2025.

Wall Street analysts have recommended that investors continue to favor shares of the biggest American companies as the S&P 500 index

looks likely to deliver a total return north of 25% for the second-straight year, a rare accomplishment.

Teams at Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs Group, UBS Group, Barclays, Société Générale and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have all recommended that investors focus on the U.S. next year, although some see pockets of value abroad as well.


Most expect the biggest opportunities could be found in shifting market leadership, as investors increasingly diversify away from the Big Tech stocks that dominated the market in 2023 and 2024. Many, including J.P. Morgan’s global markets strategy group led by Dubravko Lakos-Bujas, see financials and utilities as potential beneficiaries.

Although Lakos-Bujas also believes Japanese stocks look compelling, he is much more downbeat on the outlook for the eurozone and emerging markets.

That is not to say there aren’t risks, even in the U.S.

High valuations for the biggest American firms and lingering questions about the incoming policy agenda in Washington could knock the rally off track, or at least introduce more volatility. Rising Treasury yields are also making some nervous, as Trump’s tariff agenda is widely expected to be inflationary.

But a still-strong economy and the lopsided benefits of the artificial-intelligence revolution should continue to favor U.S. stocks.

“The U.S. exceptionalism story could face turbulence and heightened volatility on the back of policy changes in 2025, but opportunities are likely to outweigh risks,” JPMorgan’s Lakos-Bujas said in a report.


The chorus of bullish calls comes as domestic stocks see their share of the global equity market climb to its highest level since late 2001, according to FactSet data, which showed the U.S. market capitalization accounted for more than 50% of the value in the global equity market.

One strategist, Albert Edwards at SocGen, even recently invoked a once-popular acronym — “TINA,” which stands for “there is no alternative” — to describe the perception that U.S. stocks appear to be the only game in town.

Valuations are high, but so are earnings expectations
Most bullish Wall Street strategists touted the myriad advantages harbored by the biggest U.S. firms. Superior earnings growth could continue to push prices higher and justify the recent multiple expansion that has pushed valuations higher.

“The earnings expectation in the U.S. is quite healthy,” said Venu Krishna, chief U.S. equity strategist at Barclays, in an interview with MarketWatch.

While Big Tech should continue to account for the bulk of this growth, other firms are slowly but surely catching up.

“The fulcrum for earnings strength remains centered on Big Tech. But directionally, the rest of the market is moving along the right path, although at a much slower pace than expected.”

The incoming Trump administration’s preference for corporate tax cuts and deregulation could help further pad companies’ bottom lines, while boosting the economy with more deficit spending.

A stock picker’s market
One common theme was dispersion — the notion that the sectors and companies leading the market higher in 2025 could look different from what investors have grown accustomed to in 2023 and 2024. Lakos-Bujas said uneven performance among sectors, styles, themes and countries could create a stock picker’s market.

This has already started to take shape during the second half of 2024, as more sectors have joined in the rally. Financials have even soared ahead of information technology, boosted by expectations surrounding Trump’s deregulation agenda.

To be sure, Wall Street professionals haven’t completely dismissed the benefits of investing abroad. Some have pointed out that international stocks haven’t been very effective as a diversifier lately.

But others, including a team from JPMorgan’s asset-management business led by Chief Global Strategist David Kelly, argued that low valuations in foreign markets are simply too compelling to pass up.

His colleague, Lakos-Bujas acknowledged the possibility that a convergence trade could begin later in 2025, driven by the yawning gap in valuations and a shifting global outlook.

“In the meantime, lack of a quality substitute to U.S. equities remains the reality,” he said.

American (tech) exceptionalism
For decades now, the U.S. economy has been the locus of global technology innovation.

In the past, this ”tech exceptionalism” — as Krishna called it — meant pioneering the development and use of the internet. Today, it means being at the forefront of trends involving artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

This is unlikely to change soon, which is one reason why Krishna expects U.S. markets will continue to dominate. Although substantial uncertainty remains about the return on companies’ investments in artificial intelligence, over time, it will likely boost productivity and make U.S. firms even more profitable.

Recently, the U.S. economy has also proven resilient to some of the pressures that have afflicted the eurozone and China. Even as the Federal Reserve hiked interest rates aggressively to combat a powerful burst of inflation, the U.S. labor market has seen only a modest slowdown.

According to the latest data, GDP grew at 2.8% clip during the third quarter, faster than other developed markets, even as a longstanding slump in manufacturing activity persisted.

Even if the pace of global economic growth were to slow next year, as many expect, U.S. stocks could continue to benefit.

That is because weaker growth abroad makes U.S. stocks even more attractive to foreign investors, according to strategists at UBS Group.

American households also have more of their net worth tied up in stocks than their peers abroad, which helps to magnify the economic boost from the “wealth effect” when the market is rising, the UBS team said.

“The positive wealth effect of the stock market is higher in the U.S. than elsewhere because household ownership of equities is much higher than in other countries,” the UBS team said.

Strategists at Deutsche Bank recently unveiled a 2025 year-end price target of 7,000 for the S&P 500, one of the more bullish forecasts on Wall Street.

Where the team sees risks ahead, they are mostly tied to Trump’s policy agenda. Things could go south if the new administration decides to pursue aggressive across-the-board import tariffs.

Barring this, Deutsche expects a second Trump administration will help boost corporate profits and the broader economy, while his trade policies could make it even more difficult for other economies and markets to keep up.

Risks remain
It is worth noting that Wall Street’s expectations for how things might play out during the coming year rarely pan out, especially when the consensus is so strong, and few appear willing to rock the boat with bold calls. At least, that was the case in 2023, when a bull market in U.S. stocks emerged more quickly than many professionals had expected.

Brent Donnelly, president of Spectra Markets, said that most of the year-ahead outlooks he has seen appeared to extrapolate out what has already been happening during the second half of 2024.

“I will write much more about the 2025 outlook, but for now it seems that forecasters are herding around a base case that looks like an extrapolation of 2024,” Donnelly said in commentary recently shared with MarketWatch.

“This seems off base to me given the brand-new shock and awe administration that will kick off with leaks in the first few weeks of January and new policies shortly thereafter.”

That could mean that the real opportunities await those willing to go against the consensus.

If you are looking to include more high-protein foods into your diet that are not meat or made from animals, plant-based proteins can help. Consuming less meat by giving it up altogether or simply eating less of it can benefit your health in a variety of ways by reducing the risk of several health conditions, including stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and some types of cancers.1


Recommendations on how much protein you should have every day vary, though a common recommendation is about 1 gram (g) of protein per 2 pounds of body weight.2 It’s best to talk to a healthcare provider or dietician with specific questions about the right protein types and amounts for your body.

1. Eggs
Eggs, while not a plant-based protein, are still a popular nonmeat protein source. Eggs are a complete protein, meaning they provide all nine essential amino acids the body cannot make alone. One large egg provides about 6 g of protein.3

Research on eggs shows that high consumption can lead to cardiovascular disease risk for some people, so experts recommend moderate to low consumption and focusing on more plant-based foods.4


2. Dairy
The protein in dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt is animal-based but allows you to get protein without eating meat. The protein content of dairy varies across and within dairy products. For example, one slice of Swiss cheese contains about 6 g of protein, and 1 cup of 1% milk contains about 8 g.5

Dairy products also provide a host of micronutrients, including calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, D, and B12.6

3. Oats and Oatmeal
Oats and oatmeal are easy ways to get protein in your breakfast. About 1 cup (100 g) of rolled oats has approximately 14 g of protein. An average serving of oats is usually about one-half cup, and while it may not seem like a lot of protein, combined with other protein sources like soy milk, nuts, or nut butter, the protein content can quickly add up.


In addition to protein content, whole grains and cereal fiber, which is found in bran and other whole grain products like oats, have been linked to reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes, likely due to their beneficial phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals.7

4. Greek Yogurt
Greek yogurt is a protein-rich dairy product, providing about 16 g of protein per container (156 g).8 Due to the straining process used to make it, Greek yogurt is thicker, tangier, and creamier than regular yogurt. Greek yogurt can serve as a protein-packed snack, topped with nuts or mixed with nut butter for an added protein boost or blended into smoothies.


5. Beans
Beans are another plant-based protein that can be easily added to many meals to make them protein-rich. The protein content of beans may vary depending on the type of bean. Common beans like black, kidney, cannellini, and navy beans have about 7 g of protein per one-half cup.9

Beans can stand alone as a side dish or can be easily made into main dishes, including veggie burgers, salads, or veggie tacos.


6. Almonds
Almonds are not only a source of plant-based protein but other important nutrients too, including vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and fiber.10 About one-fourth cup of almonds contains about 6 g of protein.11

Almond milk, however, contains little protein: 1 cup of shelf-stable unsweetened almond milk only contains about 1 g of protein.12 If you’re looking for nondairy sources of protein, consider soy milk (more on that below).

7. Nuts and Nut Butters
Nuts and nut butters are popular plant-based protein sources because of their taste and nutrient profile, which includes important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. The protein content of nuts usually falls between 4 and 6 g per one-fourth cup.9


Similarly, the protein content of nut butter varies slightly depending on the type of nut. For example, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter13 and almond butter both contain about 7 g of protein,13 while the same amount of cashew butter contains just under 6 g of protein.14

Again, this may not seem like a lot, but nuts or nut butters can be easily made into a protein-rich snack or incorporated into several dishes, like oats, smoothies, and salads.


8. Soy
Soy protein is the main protein found in products such as tofu, soy milk, and tempeh. The protein content of soy varies by the form it’s in. For example, 1 cup of soy milk contains about 7 g of protein.9

Soy products provide protein and calcium. Soy milk provides about 300 mg of calcium per cup,15 which is about 25% to 30% of the daily recommended intake for adult males and females.16

9. Legumes
Legumes include a lot of different plant foods, including lentils, peas, beans, and chickpeas. Legumes may be small, but they contain a lot of protein. Green peas, for example, provide about 9 g of protein per cup.17 Legumes can easily be tossed into salads, pastas, or soups and stews.


10. Lentils
Lentils are a popular plant-based protein source that can add heartiness to vegetarian/vegan meals. Lentils provide about 18 g of protein per cup, cooked.18 Certain types of lentils are also good sources of iron. For example, 1 cup of red or pink lentils provides about 14 mg of iron.19


Lentils are popular for making into meat-like alternatives, like lentil ragu, lentil meatballs, and lentil taco filling.

11. Tofu
Tofu, which is made from soaked soybeans, is another protein-packed plant food. Just one-half cup of raw, firm tofu contains about 22 g of protein and over 400 mg of calcium.20 Tofu is highly versatile, and can be blended into fillings (such as for quiche), cubed and fried, or sliced and marinated.

12. Tempeh
Tempeh, like tofu, is made of soybeans, specifically fermented soybeans. Tempeh is also packed with protein, with 1 cup providing about 34 g.21 Tempeh is often marinated and/or fried as a meat substitute, such as for tempeh burgers or tempeh taco fillings.


13. Quinoa
Quinoa is a powerful plant-based protein. It’s a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids. When cooked, quinoa provides about 8 g of protein per cup.22 Quinoa is also classified as a whole grain, providing healthful fiber in addition to protein.


14. Brown and Wild Rice
Both brown and wild rice are staples to many meals that not only provide healthy whole grains and fiber, but protein too. Brown rice contains about 6 g of protein per cup, cooked,23 and wild rice provides about 7 g of protein per cup, cooked.24

15. Chickpeas
Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are another protein-packed legume. A can of chickpeas contains about 18 g of protein.25 Chickpeas are the main ingredient in hummus, which can serve as a healthy protein-rich snack alongside veggies or whole-grain crackers or bread. Chickpeas can also be a sole protein source in meals as they are or roasted for added crunch.

16. Seeds
Seeds tend to have a small amount of protein per serving but are a great complement to meals or snacks where just a little more protein is needed. Protein-rich seeds include sunflower seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and sesame seeds.

Chia seeds, which are popular in smoothies or chia pudding, for example, have about 5 g of protein per 2 tablespoons.26 Hemp seeds, which can be sprinkled over oatmeal, contain about 9 g of protein per 3 tablespoons.27

Google is on a mission to enhance security for Android users, narrowing the infamous gap to Apple’s more secure, more private iPhone. Play Store is key to this, and is now undergoing huge changes as thousands of apps are deleted and its Play Protect finally addresses threats from apps installed or updated from outside Play Store.

The Play Store app purge focuses on lower-quality, likely higher-risk apps, most of which are free but which open users to malware or fraudulent ads or subs. And now, even when apps have not yet been flagged by Google, Android 15’s new live treat detection can flag risks as soon as they exhibit suspicious behavior on your phone.


Now here comes another reminder as to the risks from seemingly free but realistically heavily priced apps. Kaspersky has just warned that the number of dangerous free VPNs installs is now soaring, “increasing by 2.5 times compared to Q2 globally. These apps were malware or programs that could be potentially used by malicious actors. This surge,” Kaspersky warns, “has continued into Q4.”


Many of these apps will be installed from outside Play Store, but such has been the threat from free VPNs available on Play Store itself, that Google introduced a level of independent security validation specifically for VPNs. This is no guarantee of security, but can help identify ones you should definitely not install. But as TopVPN continues to warn, “we've uncovered hidden security flaws, concerning ownership, and shady operators behind many popular free VPN apps.”

“There is a growing demand for VPN apps,” Kaspersky says. “Users tend to believe that if they find a VPN app in an official store, like Google Play, it is safe and can be used to get content that is originally unavailable at their location. And they think it is even better if this VPN service is free! However, this often ends up being a trap, as recent cases and statistics showing a surge in malicious VPN app encounters prove.”


Even some paid VPNs carry risk, unfortunately. It has long been a bitter irony that these security apps are often more risky than the threats they promise to prevent.

Top10VPN has just issued a new report warning that it tested “the 30 most popular paid VPN apps in the Google Play store, which have more than 732 million total installs worldwide,” and while “most were completely safe and private, some had significant security and privacy flaws.” And so avoiding free in itself is not enough, users need to pick carefully from amongst paid options as well.

Top10VPN’s alarming findings included:

“3 VPNs shared data in a way that put user privacy at risk, either through ad tracking (2 VPNs) or poor practices (1 VPN).
16 VPNs suffered some kind of data leak, although none were severe.
15 VPNs exposed users’ VPN use due to lack of SNI encryption.
7 VPNs leaked DNS requests under very specific conditions.
7 VPNs potentially compromised user privacy by not operating their own DNS servers, including 2 VPNs using services other than Google/Cloudflare.
7 VPNs failed to use the latest version of TLS to establish the VPN tunnel. One made use of the deprecated SSLv2 protocol, long considered insecure.
Over a quarter (27%) of VPNs tested did not use the strongest possible encryption, though none were actually insecure.
9 VPNs exhibited various signs of tunnel instability, mostly minor.
6 VPNs requested high-risk permissions that could not be justified… such as location (4), camera (2), and read phone state (1).
4 VPNs declared use of potentially risky device hardware, such as cameras, microphones and GPS, but lacked the software features to justify doing so.
7 VPN apps posed a potential privacy risk due to embedded tracking code from advertisers and data brokers, although only 2 actually shared data.”

So, what’s the best way to stay safe? Follow the following three golden VPN rules:

Only install VPNs from Play Store, only use paid VPNs, and only use VPNs from relatively well-known developers and never from one based in China
Always ensure Play Protect is enabled on your phone, and never disable or pause Play Protect to install a VPN or other security apps it flags as risky
When live threat detection flags an app, take action; Pixels upgraded to Android 15 have this now and others will follow.
Check that the VPNs already installed on your phone meet these golden rules, and delete all those that are free or that don’t. It’s just not worth the risk.

The stock market indexes recently made new all-time highs. A resilient economy, interest rates that should trend down, enthusiasm for an expected corporate-friendly incoming administration, enthusiasm for artificial intelligence (AI), and high-flying tech stocks like Nvidia and Microsoft all play a role in this bull market.

Investors should exercise some caution at these levels. Remember that 2021 euphoria quickly turned to dread in 2022. There are pockets of the market that resemble 2021 now. For instance, Palantir's stock trades for 56 times sales and over 160 times forward earnings. It's a terrific company, but this is a nosebleed valuation by any measure.

However, some companies still trade for reasonable valuations with long-term positive trends. Here is one to consider.

Don't sleep on Airbnb
Vacation habits are changing. Younger generations book vacation rentals at a higher rate than older generations, who stick more to traditional hotels. As shown below, the number of vacation rental users will rise 25% from 2024 to 2029.


The trend means that Airbnb (ABNB 3.06%) has a long-term tailwind. Airbnb is also highly successful now.

Revenue hit $3.7 billion last quarter on 10% year-over-year growth, and operating income reached $1.4 billion on fantastic 37% growth. However, what I like most about the company is the ability to produce free cash flow. Airbnb operates with a lean business model and doesn't have significant capital expenditures (capex) needs, so much of its revenue falls into the company's pocket. Of the $10.8 billion sales over the past 12 months, $4.1 billion was converted to free cash flow, a terrific 38% margin.

Having tremendous free cash flow allows Airbnb to fund growth, maintain a fortress balance sheet, and repurchase shares. As of the third quarter, the company reported $11.3 billion in cash and investments against just $2 billion in long-term debt. The company also repurchased $2.6 billion in shares through three quarters of 2024, amounting to more than 3% of the company's current market cap.


Airbnb stock trades at a similar valuation to its rival Booking Holdings (BKNG -0.65%) based on free cash flow, as shown below.


Airbnb is trading slightly below its recent average and well below recent peaks.

Both are terrific investment options; however, Airbnb's market cap is around half of Booking's, so it has more room to compound.

The most significant risk to Airbnb is regulatory. Many localities and homeowners associations have rules limiting short-term rentals. Airbnb works proactively with policymakers to craft mutually beneficial regulations to mitigate the risk.

Airbnb will benefit from the long-term trend toward vacation rentals. The rapid rise in users and its top-notch financial results make the stock an excellent long-term pick.

Iovance harnesses the power of TILs by extracting them from each patient, manufacturing personalized treatments, and reinserting them back inside the patient.

It's not a simple procedure, but it's produced some exciting results already. In February, Iovance earned approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for Amtagvi, the first therapy for advanced previously treated melanoma (a type of skin cancer). The company estimates a potential U.S. market of 20,000 annual cases for Amtagvi. Iovance will also seek regulatory approvals in other countries, including Canada, several in Europe, and Australia.

It takes time to manufacture TIL therapies like Amtagvi -- about 34 days, in fact. So the company has likely just begun making headway into the U.S. market for its latest medicine. With approval from other countries, its addressable market will significantly expand.

Furthermore, Iovance has a rich pipeline. It's seeking many label expansions for Amtagvi, while developing other brand-new TIL treatments. Iovance Biotherapeutics' innovative approach to treating cancer could prove highly lucrative, and allow it to deliver excellent performance over the long run.

Developing drugs is difficult and expensive. The process has become slower, even with technological progress, a phenomenon known as Eroom's law (the reverse of Moore's law). Recursion Pharmaceuticals is trying to change that using an operating system (OS) powered by artificial intelligence (AI).

The company built a virtual lab where different clinical compounds are constantly tested in a human gene library; the most promising ones are chosen to undergo clinical trials. The company claims to spend far less time and money on selecting products to send to clinical trials.

Recursion currently has several products across phase 2 studies for which it will release data in the next year or so. One of them, REC-994, posted positive results in a phase 2 study for cerebral cavernous malformation, when clusters of irregular blood vessels form in the nervous system. The drug can cause severe health problems, so it will still be a while before it or others among Recursion's candidates can be approved.

If it proves successful across the board, Recursion will likely be able to license its OS to other drug developers, in addition to making money from its own medicines. The company's goal of significantly reducing the time and money it takes to develop drugs could prove incredibly lucrative.

Investors should never dive headfirst into a stock without considering the downsides, no matter how innovative a company seems. Here are some of the risks that come with investing in these two biotech stocks.

Iovance's approach is exciting, but the 34 days it takes to manufacture Amtagvi is a significant drawback. The company could also experience clinical or regulatory setbacks, a risk that's more severe for smaller drugmakers.

The same can be said about Recursion Pharmaceuticals -- it still doesn't have a single drug on the market, despite how promising its platform seems.

These two stocks do have significant upside potential. But even for those who can handle the volatility, the heightened risk means investors would want to initiate a small position in one or both stocks at first. Investors can always add more shares over time as (or if) Iovance and Recursion prove themselves.

The Federal Government will likely apply for the extradition of Simon Ekpa, the leader of the Eastern Security Network, the paramilitary organization of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig Gen Tukur Gusau, who gave the indication on Thursday, said Ekpa, a self-proclaimed disciple of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, should be extradited to Nigeria to face criminal charges.

Also, many Nigerians online demanded his repatriation to Nigeria to face terrorism charges.

However, the IPOB dissociated itself from the embattled Biafran separatist, asserting it had no relationship with him.

Ekpa is one of the 97 individuals declared wanted by the Defence Headquarters in March 2024.

The Finland-based Biafran agitator is a close ally of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing charges of terrorism, treasonable felony, and inciting violence through his Radio Biafra, amongst others.

He has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since 2021 when he was arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria.

A presidential spokesman, Daniel Bwala, said President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, have yet to be briefed on the arrest of Ekpa.

“The procedure is that the (Nigerian) Embassy in Finland has to have the information and it would brief the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the minister might brief the NSA or the President,’’ he explained.

Ekpa and four others were arrested in Finland on charges related to terrorism, Finland’s Central Criminal Police said in a statement on Thursday.

A report said the District Court of Päijät-Häme, Finland, ordered that Ekpa be imprisoned “with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.”

Speaking on the development in a statement on Thursday, Gusau said the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Chris Musa, was pleased with the trial of the ESN leader.

Gusau wrote, “CDS is happy with his arrest in Finland, with the hope this will be a step towards his extradition to Nigeria so that he will face justice.”

Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian origin, was accused of inciting crimes with terrorist intent, while the other suspects face charges of financing terrorism.

He was arrested in February 2023 for his inciting comments and sit-at-home orders to the people of the South-East.

Before his arrest, thousands of Nigerians worldwide signed a petition appealing to the Finnish and Nigerian governments and the European Union to arrest Ekpa.

He had asked the people to boycott the 2023 general poll, insisting there would be no election in the region.

Worried by his activities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Finnish Ambassador to Nigeria, Leena Pylvanainen, over his threats to stop the 2023 general election in the South-East.

The ministry sought the Finnish government’s cooperation to arrest Ekpa over threats to disrupt the exercise.

The Finnish police confirmed on Thursday that Ekpa and his accomplices were arrested earlier this week as part of an international investigation.

Ekpa, who describes himself as the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, is alleged to have used social media platforms to promote violent activities in the South-East, including attacks on civilians and authorities.

The police said the main suspect was arrested “on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” while four others were arrested “for financing a terrorist crime.”

The police added: “Claims will be heard in Päijät-Häme district court today, November 21. The detention demands are related to the preliminary investigation, in which a Finnish citizen of Nigerian background, born in the 1980s, is suspected of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.

“The police suspect that the man has promoted his efforts from Finland by means that have led to violence against civilians and authorities as well as other crimes in the region of South-Eastern Nigeria” the statement read in part.

Speaking on the case, Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen stated, “The man has carried out this activity, among other things, on his social media channels,” suggesting that his online actions have fueled violence in Nigeria.

“Four other persons are suspected of financing the aforementioned activity. All five suspects in the crime were arrested at the beginning of the week.

“International cooperation has been carried out during the preliminary investigation,” the statement added.

The four other suspects, whose identities have not been disclosed, are believed to have financed these alleged activities.

The Central Criminal Police revealed that the case involved extensive international collaboration.

The Finnish authorities emphasised their commitment to investigating the case thoroughly as part of their broader effort to combat terrorism.

Expressing delight over Ekpa’s arrest and ongoing trial, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen Edward Buba, said the military was pleased with the news.

The Chief of Defence Staff had severally called for Ekpa’s arrest, accusing him of sponsoring terrorism in the South-East.

Buba noted that the military was glad that the international community was supporting the country in its fight against terrorism.

He stated, “The CDS has always called for the arrest of Simon Ekpa following his deep involvement in fuelling terrorism in SE Nigeria. We are delighted about his arrest, and glad that the international community is partnering with Nigeria in our fight against terrorism.”

The ESN has been implicated in numerous violent activities in the South-East since its creation in December 2020.

While the ESN was initially formed to counter the activities of armed herdsmen and protect local communities, their operations have reportedly led to significant unrest in the region.

The group has been accused of ambushing and killing troops of the Nigerian Army, police, and other security personnel.

Police stations and military checkpoints in the South-East have been frequent targets, leading to loss of lives and property.

Also, the ESN has been linked to arson attacks on public facilities such as police stations, electoral offices, and government buildings, disrupting governance and public services in the region.

There have been allegations of extrajudicial killings by the ESN, including attacks on individuals accused of opposing IPOB’s secessionist agenda or cooperating with the government.

Some communities have reported being harassed or forced to comply with the group’s directives, including its Monday sit-at-home orders, especially during days commemorating Biafra or protesting the detention of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Defiance of these orders had led to attacks on businesses, vehicles, and individuals, paralyzing economic activities in the South-East.

Conflicts between the ESN and local vigilante groups, including state-backed security outfits like Ebube Agu, have resulted in casualties and instability, escalating insecurity in the South-East.

The situation had led to heightened military operations in the region, sometimes resulting in collateral damage and further alienation of local communities.

The Federal Government labelled the ESN a terrorist organisation and launched several military operations to dismantle it.

On Monday, Anambra Central Senatorial Zone descended into chaos as gunmen enforcing the sit-at-home order attacked Abatete, Abagana, and Ukpo communities, leaving five people dead and several others injured.

At Abatete, three vigilantes attached to the town’s president-general were fatally shot. The victim sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Also, vehicles were set ablaze by the attackers who repeatedly warned the people to respect the sit-at-home order.

Witnesses reported further violence in Abagana and Ukpo. At the Ukpo roundabout in Dunukofia Local Government Area, a vigilante member and a motorcyclist were reportedly gunned down.

Meanwhile, IPOB denied any relationship with Ekpa, saying it had publicly asked the people and relevant authorities to stop linking it with the embattled Biafran agitator.

Reacting to the arrest of Ekpa by the Finnish authorities, IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, maintained that his organisation had nothing to do with Ekpa and his group, Autopilot.

He said, “We are not interested in his arrest. All we want is for the release of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has not committed any offence and who has been freed by the law courts. That is our concern.

“We have reiterated on several occasions that the Ekpa had no relationship with the IPOB from the formation to date and he had nothing in common with the Biafra struggle.

“For a long time, IPOB has maintained that there is nothing like autopilot in IPOB. More so, the criminal gang leader in Finland has no relationship with ESN from the formation of ESN to date or with IPOB. The authorities should stop linking IPOB with Ekpa and his group and IPOB is not interested in his arrest or whatever.”

“All we want is for the Nigerian government to release our leader who has been detained for no known crime other than fighting for the liberation of his people.”

Spokesman of IPOB’s Political Wing, Nwachukwu Emereonye, called for the immediate extradition of Ekpa to Nigeria to face the consequences of his actions.

While speaking to journalists on the development, Emereonye noted that Ekpa’s actions led to the death of scores of innocent people and destruction of businesses in the South-East.

He said, “We in IPOB Political Wing welcome the arrest of Simon Ekpa. His actions are unbecoming. Scores of people have been killed and properties worth billions of Naira destroyed.

“He should be handed over the Nigerian government for immediate prosecution.”

Also, a chieftain of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Dubem Silas, said the apex Igbo socio-cultural group was still studying the details behind Ekpa’s arrest.

Silas said if found guilty, according to the laws of Finland, Ekpa should be made to face the music.

He said, “We heard of the news of his arrest online and we are still studying the details. Ohanaeze, as a body is not in support of anything that is against the law.

“However, what is upper most for us and a top priority is for the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who did not commit any crime, who did not carry gun or arm, but he’s been detained unlawfully despite the fact that the courts of the land have freed him.”

The arrest of the ESN leader has generated various reactions online with many Nigerians demanding his extradition to Nigeria.

A former aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, applauded the development on his X handle.

He said, “The arrest and detention of one Simon Ekpa by the Finnish authorities for terrorism-related charges and inciting terrorism in Nigeria is good news.

‘’Not only is this misguided young man a feral psychopath, a hate-filled sociopath, a notorious coward and a man of blood but he is also a religious bigot, an unrepentant racist, an ethnic supremacist and an enemy of humanity.

“He derived pleasure from killing and torturing our people and he waged war on our nation from the safety of Finland. Many innocent Nigerians were killed on his orders and as a consequence of his foul and divisive rhetoric.

“I hope this serves as a lesson to others in our nation who believe that division, violence & terror are the only way forward and who have no respect for the sanctity of human life.”

Bashir Ahmad, former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, proposed that Ekpa should be extradited to Nigeria after serving his jail term in Finland.

Ahmad said Ekpa should be made to face justice for the treasonable offences he perpetrated in the South-East.

He insisted that Ekpa should be punished for his role in the sit-at-home enforcement in the region.

Posting on X, Ahmad wrote: “After serving his jail term in Finland, Simon Ekpa should be extradited to Nigeria to face justice for his numerous treasonable offences, particularly his role in enforcing the unlawful and condemned sit-at-home orders on our brothers and sisters.”

An X user, Nwafresh @nwafresh wrote, “Extradite this son of a thousand fathers called Simon Ekpa back to Nigeria and I’ll use my last kobo to watch his tears in every court session until his last day on earth… A murderer and coward.. Tueh.”
