The coldest countries in the world have diverse weather, with temperatures that can become extremely low and harsh at the same time. Despite their climate conditions, these countries are rich culturally and also blessed with natural wonders. The residents of each country are resilient; they make the frigid period very exciting for themselves by engaging in snowboarding, skiing, ice fishing, and so on. 1. Russia Russia is well known for its cold weather, especially in Siberia, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Norilsk is one of the coldest locations in Siberia; temperatures usually fall below 30 degrees Celsius. During winter, Russia is always covered in snow in the form of frozen lakes, landscapes, and rivers surrounded by ice. Although the winter season in Moscow and St. Petersburg can be very unfavourable or harsh, the Russians are accustomed to it and embrace it on a daily basis. Ice fishing and ice hockey are the main winter sports in the country. 2. Canada Canada is also one of the coldest countries in the world, especially in the northern part. Places such as Winnipeg and the Yukon Territory experience frequent falls below freezing and harsh cold. The extreme cold changes people’s lifestyles. They engage in different outdoor activities such as snowboarding, skiing, ice hockey, and visiting rocky mountains. 3. Greenland Greenland is an independent territory from the Kingdom of Denmark. It is the world’s biggest island, covered mainly by glacial landscapes and frigid temperatures. There is always intense weather throughout the year. The widespread ice sheet in the country is the main reason for the general cold. The citizens engage in dog sledding and ice fishing to adapt to the atmosphere. 4. Iceland Iceland is also one of the coldest countries in the world, but it is warmer than its name implies. The temperature usually becomes more severe between December and January, but sunny or calm weather is scarce in Iceland. 5. Finland Finland is a country filled with forests and various lakes that transform yearly. The weather here is quite diverse; it changes quickly, especially during winter. The temperature is usually affected by warm airflows from the Atlantic and the Baltic Sea. Unlike the north, the mildest atmosphere can be found in the southwestern part of Finland, where you would find snow everywhere. 6. Sweden Sweden can get extremely cold during winter, leading to power cuts, harsh winds and frostbite. The climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean. During the coldest period, Sweden transforms into a winter wonderland, where you can experience snowy landscapes, skiing, ice fishing, and snowboarding. Winter is actually celebrated here; it’s a lifestyle, not an endured one. 7. Norway Norway turns into a winter wonderland from November to April. The western coast of the country experiences much warmer weather. Places like Trondheim and Oslo are much drier and colder compared to the aforementioned. During winter, the nights get darker in Norway, and the days are shorter. 8. Mongolia The climate in Mongolia is highly harsh; it affects both humans and livestock — they eventually die. The weather threatens livelihood, hindering the country’s food supply. Most of the people are herders who depend solely on their animals to sell for survival. 9. Kazakhstan Kazakhstan becomes very cold between November and March. Winter transforms the country into beautiful scenery. Despite the atmosphere, the skies are usually bright and sunny. As a visitor, you will be fascinated by winter sports, snow-covered landscapes, and different cultural events. tribuneonlineng.com © 1949-2024 African Newspapers of Nigeria Ltd. |

In 2023, nearly 62 million lives were lost worldwide—an average of around 7,000 deaths every hour. These numbers reflect the impacts of aging, illness, and conflict, and we further look into the countries with the most deaths every hour. Data is sourced from the latest UN Population Prospects and figures are rounded. At the top of the list, China lost more than 1,300 people every hour in 2023. This is about 300 more deaths than second-ranked India (roughly 1,000 people ever hour). How to Spot an Undervalued Stock Investing in undervalued shares could give your portfolio a boost if they eventually see significant price appreciation. Investing in undervalued stock could give your portfolio a boost if they eventually see significant price appreciation. The concept of value investing, developed by Benjamin Graham and popularized by Warren Buffett, essentially means investing in shares that are undervalued by the market. When a stock’s share price is well below its intrinsic value, that can be a bargain buy for investors. The payoff comes when that stock’s price begins to rise as the market catches on to its true worth. Investors then have an opportunity to sell, ideally for a sizable profit. This is the essential goal of investing: Buy low, sell high. The question is, how do you find undervalued shares to invest in? How to Identify an Undervalued Stock Finding undervalued shares to invest in requires some skill and know-how when it comes to how the market works. It also requires a discerning eye, since sometimes shares can appear to be undervalued when they actually aren’t. In that scenario, you might purchase a stock on the assumption that its price will increase over time, but it doesn’t. Instead, the price flatlines or worse, decreases, meaning you realize a loss rather than a gain on your investment. This is known as the value trap. That’s what you want to avoid with a value investing approach. With that in mind, here are four ways to accurately spot undervalued shares. 1. Check the Ratios Several ratios can be useful in assessing a stock’s value. Here are some of the most important: Price-to-earnings ratio (P/E): The price-to-earnings ratio is a way to measure a stock’s relative value. It’s the ratio between a company’s share price and its earnings per share. Earnings per share is calculated by dividing a company’s profit by the total number of outstanding shares issued. A higher P/E ratio generally means a higher stock price, relative to the company’s earnings. If a company has a lower P/E ratio, it means a stock is less expensive and could be a discounted buy. Price-to-earnings growth ratio (PEG): The PEG ratio is a company’s P/E ratio divided by its earnings growth rate over a set period of time. A low PEG may suggest that the market is discounting a company’s potential to grow over the long-term, resulting in an undervaluation. Price-to-book ratio (P/B): The price-to-book ratio is a stock’s price divided by its equity per share. When this calculation results in a number that’s less than one, it suggests that the share is trading for less than what the company’s total assets are worth. Current ratio: The current ratio is commonly used to assess a company’s financial health. It’s simply a company’s assets divided by its liabilities. It’s also a way to measure how easily a company can keep up with its debt obligations. Debt-to-equity ratio (D/E): The debt-to-equity ratio means the amount of debt a company has divided by its shareholders’ equity. A higher D/E ratio means a company relies more heavily on debt than equity to finance operations. But that should be balanced against assets, cash flow and earnings when determining value. 2. Consider Cash Flow and Dividend Yield The dividend yield and current cash flow can also be significant when trying to find undervalued shares to invest in. Some companies pay investors a dividend, which represents a share of profits. The dividend yield and current cash flow can also be significant when trying to find undervalued shares to invest in. In terms of dividend yield, it’s important not to be distracted by the number alone. A strong dividend yield suggests that a company is paying out a decent amount of profits right now, but you have to dig deeper. Specifically, you should be looking at a company’s cash flow, debts and dividend payout history to determine if the current dividend yield is sustainable. If a company is paying the bulk of its profits out in dividends, for example, that may leave it with less cash flow to pay off debts or invest in growth for the long-term. When it comes to finding stocks that are undervalued, the key thing to look for with dividend yield and cash flow is consistency. If a company is continually paying out a steady dividend, despite a lower share price, that’s a sign that its underlying financials are strong. 3. Compare Competitor Pricing Another way to evaluate whether a share is undervalued is to look at similar companies in the same industry. Here, you want to make apples-to-apples comparisons between the company you think is undervalued and other companies that sell at a higher price point. Specifically, consider what’s driving the company’s share price to be lower than the competition and how the price is trending. This is where looking at things like the moving average can be helpful. The moving average is a way to track price movements over time, accounting for both short-term and long-term pricing changes. When looking at pricing trends, keep the drops in perspective. And don’t forget to look at how the stock is trading relative to competitors. Also, it’s worth considering whether a competitor company is accurately valued. It could be that a competitor is overvalued, making the company you’re interested in appear to be worth less than it actually is. 4. Look at the Financials When trying to find undervalued shares, it helps to have as complete a picture of the company’s financials as possible. You often need more than just the metrics like the price-to-earnings ratio. That means reviewing the fundamentals concerning things like the income sheet, balance statement and quarterly earnings reports. Looking at these things can help you get a better sense of how strong the company’s financial position is and how sustainable the business model is. A company that’s seeing steady positive earnings over a multi-year period with minimal debt, for example, could be a good candidate as an undervalued stock if those indicators aren’t reflected by an increasing share price. In other words, the shares could prove to be a dark horse whose potential isn’t being realized by investors. Something else to consider is how strong a company’s financial position is, relative to its competitors. Specifically, you’d want to look for companies that may be undervalued but have opportunities to grow if a market downturn happens. These are the companies that have strong cash flow, minimal debt and are positioned to see steady or increased demand for their services or products in changing market environments. Picking undervalued shares takes some effort. Picking undervalued shares takes some effort. The better you understand the basics of how to identify stocks that may be undervalued, the easier it may be to use a value investing strategy to boost your portfolio’s return profile. The key is remembering that there’s no definitive set of rules for identifying the right shares to invest in. And like anything else, there’s still a certain amount of risk involved. © 2024 SmartAsset, all rights reserved. |

The Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions has attributed the worsening cash shortage across the country to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s inability to meet the cash demands of commercial banks. Speaking with The PUNCH, ASSBIFI President, Olusoji Oluwole, highlighted the dire impact of the scarcity, particularly as the festive season approaches, with increased demand for cash for shopping and business transactions. “In terms of (the cash) scarcity, this is something that has not ended since the redesign of the naira,” Oluwole said. Oluwole explained that banks have only two primary sources of cash – the CBN and retailers. “Banks have only two sources of cash: the CBN and retailers. The CBN has not met banks’ demands, and retailers often sell cash for profit, making it harder for banks to access funds,” he explained. He noted that the apex bank has failed to meet the cash demands of banks, while retailers profit by selling cash instead of depositing it back into the banking system. “But, of course, it is beginning to become more pronounced now that we’re heading towards the Christmas celebrations, where a lot of people are going to need money to carry out their shopping and other businesses. “Banks are not in a position to force retailers to bring the cash to banks,” he added, describing how this dynamic exacerbates the scarcity of cash in Automated Teller Machines and across bank counters. Citing statistics, Oluwole stated that banks collectively require at least N20m daily to operate, with ATMs needing approximately N8m each and N4m over the counters. He stressed the importance of CBN providing clear statistics on cash circulation to improve distribution efficiency. “For us, we are not interested in trading games like we were doing last year but looking for solutions. The solution, one, is for CBN to have clear statistics, so that they understand where they are, how they are circulating, and where they are circulating to,” he said. Oluwole also advocated for a shift towards less dependency on cash, emphasising that a cashless economy is cheaper, safer, and more efficient for the economy. “An economy that operates in a cashless manner does better than a cash-dependent economy. It is a proven thing all over the world,” he stated. “You cannot be selling cash. You cannot sell your currency to people for a profit at discounted rates. It is not done anywhere,” Oluwole emphasised. He urged authorities to investigate reports of point-of-sale operators buying cash from fuel stations and supermarkets. Oluwole concluded by reiterating that no bank deliberately withholds cash from its customers. “No bank wants to starve its customers of cash. It does not make sense for any bank to hold on to cash, but you can only give what you have,” he said. “As the cash crisis persists, stakeholders are urging the CBN to act swiftly to address these concerns and alleviate the strain on both banks and the public,” Oluwole stated. Also, the National Coordinator of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, Emmanuel Onwubiko, in a statement criticised the CBN and its Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, for their mishandling of monetary policy, holding them responsible for the resulting widespread hardship. He further highlighted how cash scarcity has left millions, especially in rural areas, unable to conduct transactions, pushing small businesses, artisans, and daily wage earners deeper into poverty. “Nationwide, long bank and ATM queues have become the norm, with depositors unable to access their funds despite sufficient balances,” he added. Onwubiko argued that the crisis reflects not just poor monetary policy but also deeper systemic issues within Nigeria’s economy. He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene swiftly to stabilise the banking system and avert economic collapse. The group also called on the National Assembly to summon the CBN Governor for accountability and oversight. punchng.com © 1971- 2024 Punch Nigeria Limited |

It all depends on the financial muzzle of the man, some men don't want their wife to work, they even place her on monthly salary and allowance. The man want her to take full charge of the home front, including taking proper care of the children When you share responsibilities with your wife, you will surely loose her respect for you as a husband. If you know you don't have the resources to take care and run a home, you better remain single until you are strong financially. |
Yemen’s Houthi group says it has carried out a drone attack in central Israel’s Tel Aviv area in “a specific military operation” in support of Palestinians in Gaza. The Houthis said in a statement on Monday that their forces struck “a sensitive target of the Israeli enemy”. An Israeli military statement said a drone hit a building in the city of Yavne after air defence systems failed to detect it and an investigation into the failure is under way. The Houthis said the operation “achieved its objective” without providing details. No injuries were reported in the attack, which caused damage to several apartments in the building, according to Israeli media reports. The Houthis said the attack was in response to Israel’s “massacres” against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, where Israel has been waging a devastating assault for more than a year. The Houthis – who control large areas of Yemen, including the capital, Sanaa, and present themselves as the country’s official armed forces – pledged to continue their attacks on Israel until the end of the war on Gaza. “The Yemeni Armed Forces confirm that they will confront any Israeli aggression against our country with more specific military operations and that their support operations for the Palestinian people will not stop until the aggression stops and the siege on the Gaza Strip is lifted,” the group said in a statement. The Houthis have been carrying out attacks on shipping lanes in and around the Red Sea in a campaign that they said aims to pressure Israel to end its assault on Gaza. The Iran-allied Yemeni group has also launched missiles and drones directly at Israel over the past year. The United States is leading a military coalition that has been bombing Houthi targets in Yemen. Israel has also carried out air strikes against areas under the control of the group. But these efforts have failed to stop the Houthi attacks. Monday’s drone strike suggests that the Houthis are continuing their attacks on Israel even after a ceasefire in Lebanon came into effect on November 27, putting an end to another Gaza “support front” by Iran-allied Hezbollah. The Houthis and Hezbollah are both part of the Tehran-led “Axis of Resistance”. Hezbollah began launching strikes at Israel in October 2023 in a push that it said aimed to end the war on Gaza. But under the terms of the truce that followed more than 62 days of intense Israeli bombardment of Lebanon, Hezbollah and Israel agreed to cease their attacks. The deal also says Hezbollah must withdraw its forces to the north of the Litani River, about 30km (20 miles) north of the Israeli border, and dismantle its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon. In Gaza, Israel’s assault has killed more than 44,700 people, many of whom are women and children. The offensive has also wiped out large parts of the territory and displaced nearly its entire population. More than 100,000 people have been wounded, according to health authorities in the besieged enclave. United Nations experts and rights groups, including Amnesty International, have accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. Al Jazeera Media Network logo © 2024 Al Jazeera Media Network |
