Many passengers travelling from Badore Jetty to Ikorodu area of Lagos State through the waterways were stranded on Xmas day due to water hyacinths disrupting passenger boat movements. Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, some passengers expressed disappointment at the disruptions to waterways transportation on Lagos waters. According to one of the passengers, Mr. Rufai Olatunji, the water hyacinth has forced many boat operators from running schedule boat services as at when due. Olatunji explained that he arrived at the jetty early in the morning to catch a boat to Ijede in Ikorodu for a church fellowship but was disappointed when he discovered that boat operators were unable to work due to the invasive hyacinth. “This is not encouraging at all. The government should find a lasting solution to these water hyacinth challenges that boat operators face yearly,” he said. Also speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, another passenger, Jamiu Omotunde, lamented the stress and frustration caused by the disruption. He explained that the waterways, which usually served as a faster alternative to road transportation, became unreliable during the festive season due to the recurring hyacinth problem. “I wanted to avoid the usual Christmas traffic on the roads, but here I am, stranded. “The government needs to invest in regular clearing of the waterways to prevent this from recurring,” He said. Also, Mr Deji Adeniyi, another passenger, expressed hope for quick and effective solutions to water hyacinth in Lagos waterways to avoid further disruptions, especially during festive periods, at the peak of transportation demands. “Water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant, has long been a major issue on Lagos waterways, particularly during the dry season when it spreads rapidly. “Government should call for more sustainable approaches, such as the use of biological control agents and community-based monitoring programmes to address the issue,” he said. When contacted, the Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Engineer Sarat Braimah explained that the agency will keep.clearimf water hyacinth. In her words, “We have moved from Badore to Ikorodu and have kept clearing water hyacinth from our waterways. “But you know there is Christmas holiday, so you should understand why there is no hyacinth clearance today. “We will keep clearing water hyacinth. As we clear, it keeps coming. It’s the season. We are ready for the challenge.” Copyright © 2022 Nigerian Tribune Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (Syndigate.info). |

At least 10 people were killed and several wounded when a Nigerian military fighter jet pursuing bandits in two villages mistakenly bombed civilians in the northwestern state of Sokoto on Wednesday, the state governor Ahmed Aliyu said. “The military jets were on their mission to eliminate criminal armed groups terrorizing the state, and mistakenly bombed innocent people of this community,” Aliyu said in a statement. Aliyu added that the state will collaborate with other authorities to investigate the military operation that killed people in the villages of Gidan Sama and Rintuwa in the Surame local government area. The military late on Wednesday said it had struck targets in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa identified as associated with the Lakurawa group, but did not provide any details on civilians affected. Last month, the military warned of a new insurgent group, Lakurawas, infiltrating the country’s northwest region from neighboring Niger and Mali. Wednesday’s deadly air assault occurred at around 0500 GMT after two military jets dropped bombs in the villages, the local government chairman said. There is widespread insecurity in northwest Nigeria, while a 15-year Islamist insurgency has plagued the northeast of the country and gang and separatist violence affects the southeast. © 2024 Cable News Network. 3 of the Fastest-Growing Stocks on the Planet in 2025 Growth stocks played an instrumental role in supporting year two of the bull market rally. Wall Street expects three rapidly-scaling businesses to grow their sales by 113% to 598% in 2025. There's more to a great investment than just eye-popping revenue growth. These hypergrowth stocks are forecast to produce sales growth of up to 598% in the new year. Wall Street and investors have little to complain about with just a few days left before we turn the page to 2025. When the closing bell tolled on Dec. 24, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite had respectively galloped higher by 15%, 27%, and 33% for the year. The prevailing theme for year two of the current bull market was, once again, the outperformance of growth stocks. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is just one example of investors being enamored with high-growth, innovative businesses that are reshaping the corporate landscape. In 2025, some of Wall Street's fastest-growing businesses on the planet are expected to deliver triple-digit sales growth. Just keep in mind that outsized sales growth doesn't necessarily mean a stock is worth buying. An all-electric Lucid Air driving on a windy, one-lane, mountain road. Lucid Air has struggled to gain share in the luxury electric-vehicle category. Lucid Group: Estimated sales growth of 127% in 2025 The first high-octane growth stock expected to increase its revenue by triple digits next year is electric-vehicle (EV) manufacturer Lucid Group (LCID 3.12%). Based on consensus estimates from Wall Street, Lucid is projected to boost sales to $1.74 billion in 2025 from an estimated $766.8 million this year. One of the biggest catalysts is the initial delivery of its second EV, the Lucid Gravity SUV, in the latter half of 2025. Orders for the company's newest vehicle began on Nov. 7. The company is aggressively increasing its production capacity to meet orders for Gravity, which is a less-costly and more-practical vehicle than Air, the company's sedan. Lucid Group is also well-capitalized. It's received investments from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and appears to have more than enough capital to extend its cash runway well into 2026. This should give Lucid time to launch Gravity, ramp sales of its newest EV, and improve certain aspects of its production efficiency. NASDAQ: LCID Lucid Group Today's Change (3.12%) US$0.10 Current Price US$3.30 However, Lucid has whiffed on what looked to be its biggest competitive advantage of all. With Tesla de-emphasizing the importance of Model S and shifting its focus to the less-costly Model 3 sedan, the luxury sedan market was ripe for the taking by Lucid Air. Unfortunately, Lucid's cash burn rate was too high for management to ignore, which caused the company to slow its pace of expansion. Lucid Air simply hasn't been the home run that it was initially expected to be. While tightening the company's proverbial belt on costs is a good thing, Lucid Group isn't particularly close to becoming profitable, either. Though the launch of Gravity will help scale revenue and modestly minimize losses, the consensus still calls for Lucid to lose around $2.7 billion in 2025. In other words, Lucid has yet to prove to Wall Street or investors that it has a viable operating model. With the company likely needing additional capital raises before it has any chance of becoming profitable, Lucid Group has the look of a stock to avoid for now. Riot Platforms: Estimated sales growth of 113% in 2025 A second supercharged growth stock that Wall Street is expecting to deliver triple-digit sales growth in the new year is Bitcoin (BTC 1.25%) mining company Riot Platforms (RIOT -1.03%). The consensus calls for Riot to generate $782.5 million in sales in 2025, which is up 113% from the company's estimated revenue this year. Bitcoin is the largest cryptocurrency by market cap and has had a truly phenomenal year, with the token recently surpassing $100,000. Investors buying into Riot Platforms anticipate that cryptocurrency miners will benefit from Bitcoin's rising price. Riot uses farms of graphics processing units (GPUs) to solve complex equations and validate transactions on Bitcoin's network. Being the first to resolve a group of transactions, known as a block, entitles companies like Riot to a reward. The current block reward is 3.125 Bitcoins. This means every time Riot solves a block, it's receiving more than $300,000 in value (i.e., the value of 3.125 Bitcoins). Riot Platforms has aggressively purchased GPUs to increase its hash rate, which is effectively the computational power of its hardware. The higher the hash rate, the greater the perceived likelihood of receiving Bitcoin block rewards. NASDAQ: RIOT Riot Platforms Today's Change (-1.03%) -US$0.12 Current Price US$11.55 However, even with Bitcoin rocketing to a fresh high, Riot Platforms hasn't turned the corner to profitability. Based on data from MacroMicro.com, average Bitcoin mining costs have risen in lockstep with the price per token of the world's largest digital currency, leaving little room for juicy margins. A six-digit price attached to Bitcoin offers no guarantee that Riot will become profitable on a recurring basis. Furthermore, the halving of Bitcoin block rewards will make it increasingly more difficult and cost-intensive for Riot Platforms to earn Bitcoin. This is a high-cost, low-margin operating model that doesn't appear built for the long term. Serve Robotics: Estimated sales growth of 598% in 2025 A third company slated to be one of the fastest-growing stocks on the planet in 2025 is AI-powered delivery robot provider Serve Robotics (SERV 24.75%). Wall Street's consensus calls for Serve to generate $13.31 million in sales next year, which represents a nearly 600% increase from what it's expected to report for 2024. Serve Robotics became a popular name among AI-focused investors in mid-July, which is when Wall Street's artificial intelligence darling Nvidia announced that it had converted a debt note it held into 1,050,129 shares of Serve stock. Although Nvidia isn't known as a huge investor, eyebrows are going to be raised when the leading provider of hardware for AI-accelerated data centers takes a common-equity stake in an early stage business. NASDAQ: SERV Serve Robotics Today's Change (24.75%) US$3.50 Current Price US$17.64 Serve Robotics is currently in its expansion phase of testing food-delivery robots in Los Angeles, and is planning to expand to the Dallas Fort Worth market by the midpoint of 2025. It also has a partnership in place with Uber Eats to deploy 2,000 new delivery robots by the end of next year. To finance its geographic expansion and the build-out of it's AI-inspired delivery-robot network, the company has established an at-the-market financing program and closed out September with $50.9 million in cash and no debt. Selling stock will likely be a key source of funding as Serve Robotics expands its reach and tests new markets. The issue is that Serve Robotics is worth $626 million, yet its entire operating model is still in the proof-of-concept stage. The company brought in less than $183,000 in combined delivery service revenue and branding fees during the third quarter and lost more than $8.4 million from its operations. It's going to be quite some time before investors have any idea of whether or not food-delivery robots are a viable business model. Though Serve Robotics holds the distinction of being one of Nvidia's few public investments, it appears to be priced for perfection given its countless unknowns. © 1995 - 2024 The Motley Fool. Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former spokesman and ex-Director-General of the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Organisation, has stated that the presidency should return to the south in 2027, ruling out the possibility of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar emerging as Nigeria’s president. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, Okupe argued that while Atiku, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, is eminently qualified, geopolitical considerations make his candidacy unsuitable. According to Okupe, fairness dictates that the south completes its eight-year tenure following President Bola Tinubu’s term, mirroring the north’s eight years under President Muhammadu Buhari. “Atiku did not lose in 2023 due to a lack of competence but because the idea of a northern Muslim succeeding another northern Muslim was untenable. “If Atiku contests in 2027, he has every right and is undoubtedly one of the best candidates. However, geopolitical considerations persist. A southerner would have only completed four years and needs another term. “It’s an unwritten agreement that when a northerner serves eight years, a southerner follows. Breaking this balance in 2027 would not work,” Okupe stated. He added that Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, could also contest in 2027 as a southerner but noted it would be challenging to unseat Tinubu if he continues to perform well. “Obi is dynamic and ambitious, but geopolitics remains crucial in a country still striving for unity. Tinubu, a southerner, is currently delivering results. I wish Obi luck, but it will be an uphill battle,” Okupe remarked. Regarding alliances aimed at unseating Tinubu, Okupe dismissed their chances, citing a lack of willingness among opposition leaders to make necessary concessions. “I’ve been in politics for over 40 years and participated in several alliances. Most fail due to selfishness and a lack of maturity. “Even the successful alliance that brought Buhari to power in 2015 worked because Tinubu made significant concessions to ensure its success,” he said. Okupe expressed doubts about the readiness of opposition leaders such as Atiku, Obi, and Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso to unite behind a single candidate, describing such maturity as lacking in the current political landscape. On Tinubu’s performance, Okupe lauded his leadership, describing him as purposeful, zealous, and clear about his vision for Nigeria. “Tinubu’s emergence in 2023 is a blessing for Nigeria. It took Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew 31 years to transform his country into a first-world nation. Nigeria must decide whether to embrace progress or continue playing politics at the expense of future generations,” he concluded. (NAN) Copyright © 1994 - 2024 PM NEWS | |
The Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO) has closed the factories of Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, and Guinness Nigeria for extracting groundwater for commercial purposes without the required authorisation. Speaking on Tuesday in Lagos, Olowu Babatunde, the director of technical services at LASWARCO, stated that the commission had been engaging with the three companies for over seven years. However, they had either partially complied or failed to meet regulatory requirements, necessitating enforcement action. “We operate under a law that empowers us to regulate major groundwater extractors in Lagos State,” Babatunde explained. “Extractors are individuals or organisations that withdraw significant quantities of groundwater for commercial purposes. “These companies—Coca-Cola, FrieslandCampina, and Guinness—extract water in large volumes. We have been in discussions with them for over seven years. Some have made partial efforts to comply, while others have not complied at all. Now, with the implementation of our regulations, we are compelling them to meet all regulatory obligations.” On Monday, Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, addressed the issue during a press briefing on unregulated groundwater extraction. Wahab highlighted that the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 authorises LASWARCO to regulate groundwater activities and impose penalties for unauthorised extraction. Wahab warned of severe environmental risks posed by unregulated groundwater extraction, such as land subsidence and contamination. He also mentioned that in 2020, the government introduced a 75% waiver on groundwater abstraction fees to encourage compliance. Unfortunately, many organisations failed to utilise this incentive, prompting the regulator to enforce penalties. The commissioner noted that LASWARCO had issued warning letters to non-compliant organisations, granting them a 72-hour deadline to rectify their status. Failure to comply would result in penalties for operating without proper authorisation. © 2024 Newscentral Television All rights reserved. |
