Celebrities › Kim Kardashian And Husband Receives Advice From Pastor by ceomike(op): 11:08am On Nov 07, 2011
Kim Kardashian, who filed for divorce just 72 days after a multimillion-dollar wedding extravaganza, met her soon-to-be ex-husband, Kris Humphries, and the pastor, who officiated their wedding, for two hours at the NBA star’s Minnesota home.

Pastor Joel Johnson, who is the 26-year-old basketball player’s hometown minister, spent two hours with the estranged pair at Humphries’ lavish lakefront home, Radar Online reported.

The 31-year-old socialite was spotted making several emotional phone calls from the home’s porch.

Johnson declined to answer any questions about how the couple is doing, and there is no word yet if the meeting was to try and facilitate a reconciliation or just to help the couple get through the divorce process with as much civility as reality TV allows.

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, warned that incessant crisis and insecurity in the country will continue to scare away investors and breed poverty among Nigerians.

The President gave the warning when Vice President Namadi Sambo led a delegation of the Federal Capital Territory. FCT, to pay him the traditional Salleh homage at House 7 in the Presidential Villa.

He regretted that the peace and sacrifice that the Eid-el-Kabir signified was violated, warning that “if the country is not peaceful, nobody will want to invest in it. Without investment you cannot stimulate the country’s economy. We will continue to live in poverty.”

He reiterated his government’s commitment to make changes, to improve the living condition of Nigerians to ensure the future generation does not pass through the pains the present generation is going through.

He said: “It is a period that we are all expected to live in peace but as a nation, we have our challenges, even during this holy period, we still have incidence happening here and there. So plead with all of you and indeed all Muslims in every part of the country to continue to pray for peace of this country because without peace, we cannot develop as a nation. If the country is not peaceful nobody will want to come and invest. Without investment you cannot stimulate the country’s economy, we will continue to live in poverty.”

“The government is totally committed to making changes, to improving the condition of lives of our people.”

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Barcelona Beter Than Manchester City - Wenger by ceomike(op): 12:10pm On Nov 05, 2011
Arsene Wenger thinks it just too ealry to start comparing Manchester City to the likes of Barcelona,Real Madrid,Manchester City and Arsenal amongst other top level European team.

Speaking to journalist, he said:

” It is too early [to compare them to Barcelona].”

“Barcelona won the European Cup twice in three years and have won the championship and beaten everybody. Manchester City aspire to be that but at the moment there is still some way to go. They have had ten games in the Premier League.”

Barcelona
Though the Frenchman is very impressed by Manchester City’s performance so far this season, he believes they are as vulnerable as other teams in the premiership.

“They had some impressive away results and especially at Tottenham and Man United but we have to see,” said Wenger.

“The potential is there but we will see on a longer period. If they are still there with that lead in December, then you can say it will be difficult to catch them.

“But no team has no vulnerability in our league or any other league. Man City have quality. They can score goals, they can be efficient. They are the ones to catch. But it is too early [to compare them to Barcelona].

Politics › Gun And Bomb Attacks In Nigeria Kill 30 by ceomike(op): 11:29am On Nov 05, 2011
The violence took place in two cities in the north of the country, the scene of escalating tensions in recent years between Muslim and Christian communities.

The attackers bombed four police stations and several churches in the city of Damataru late on Friday night, and then waged gunbattles with security forces. Hours beforehand, a suicide bomber hit an army base in the nearby city of Maiduguri.

While no group is understood to have yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, it may prove to be the work of Boko Haram, an extremist Islamist sect. The group, whose name translates as "Western education is a sin", is blamed for series of terrorist outrages in Nigeria. Recently, it is said to have forged closer links with Al Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb, which is based just further north in the Sahara.

A lawyer who visited Damaturu government hospital on Saturday looking for a missing friend said that he counted 60 bodies in the morgue.

"I have seen 60 dead bodies in the hospital, all brought in yesterday from the attacks," he told Agence France Presse by phone

Celebrities › I Love Nigerian Men But: Yvonne Nelson by ceomike(op): 9:26am On Nov 05, 2011
Source: http://www./2011/11/05/i-love-nigerian-men-but-yvonne-nelson/

Yvonne Nelson's interview with Vanguard's Benjamin Njoku

With a superb body and sexy long legs, Yvonne Nelson is one actress to behold. A popular face in Ghollywood, Yvonne has endeared herself to a large crowd of fans across the world.

Yvonne Nelson
Showtime Celebrity cornered her at a movie location in Festac Town, Lagos, last Friday, where she speaks on her alleged ban by the movie producers in Ghana, her relationships with Jim Iyke, her love life and anger with the press .

You were a model before going into acting. How has the journey been so far?

I wasn’t modeling. It just happened by chance. I actually took part in Miss Ghana beauty pageant in 2005. It has been fun and I love what I’m doing. I have a degree in Human Resources Management but I choose to concentrate on my acting career.

It’s something I love and people are appreciating what I’m doing presently. I’m making all my fans all over the world proud. I’m making my nation proud. I’m a very patriotic person and it is all about putting my country and Africa at large on top of the chart.

Did you set out in life to become an actress or did you enter the profession by accident?

When I was growing up, I was rather interested in music. I remember when I was in secondary school, I used to perform on stage. I was always into entertainment. I wouldn’t say acting was just by the way. It was meant to be and it happened. One thing is that they are all about entertainment.

You walk into the roles or they come your way?

I never attended any audition. One Ghanaian producer , Abdusalam Umuni, owner of Versus Films brought me into the industry. He saw me and developed interest in giving me a role in his new movie then. Even when I told him I was not an actress and I wouldn’t want to be one, he convinced me to pick up the role. That was how it all started. I never attended any audition, the roles came my way. It was meant to be.

Did you win the Miss Ghana beauty pageant?

I didn’t win the contest. But I won two other awards out of five awards I entered for. I was among the last five contestants during the contest. I’m sure if I had won the beauty contest, I wouldn’t have become an actress. So, it’s good that I didn’t win Miss Ghana Beauty pageant, and it’s because I didn’t win that I’m into acting today. Everything happens in life for a reason .

Recently, Ghanaian movie producers said they lifted the six -month ban slammed on you.

I was not aware of any ban. If something is made official or if somebody is officially banned, there should be a letter notifying that person of such ban. But nobody gave me any letter. I think this whole thing started as a rumour and later, it became bigger by the day.

While the alleged ban lasted, were you still working in Ghana ?

I branched out into business during that period. I opened my shop and I also started my hair line. I was travelling all over the world. My name was everywhere and people were calling me on phone from every part of the world concerning the ban. I didn’t even feel anything. I was very busy during that period. In fact , that was the busiest moment of my life.

They said you were rude to one of the producers that employed you?

Rude! I shot two movies for the producer in question, “Back to Back”. If I was rude to him , I wouldn’t have been on his set. Yes, a misunderstanding is bound to happen while on set. When a producer wants to take advantage of someone and people are not privileged to listen to my own side of the story, they will begin to draw conclusions that one is rude or arrogant. It’s sad.

I’m only ensuring that nobody takes advantage of me while on set. Ghanian artistes hardly voice out their feelings. Sometimes, they find it difficult to complain because they are afraid that the producers might get annoyed and decide not to give them roles again.

For me, if you do something that is wrong, I will not hesitate to tell you so. While on set, artistes usually complain just as producers also complain. I know that as the faces in front of the camera, the producers are duty-bound to care for us and respect our rights. We should be their number one priority.

So, all is well with you at the moment?

Nothing has been wrong with me. It’s unfortunate that people tend to believe everything they read in the dailies. Sometimes, they think that without acting, I cannot exist. No! Absolutely, no. I am about to do my Masters Degree now and I have set up businesses that can sustain me throughout the rest of my life.

If I don’t act for six months, it does not mean it is the end of my life. I am busy doing other things. And I’m very happy with my life. It’s very sad when people sympathise with me without actually knowing half of the story. I am a very strong woman and I don’t allow all these distractions to affect me in any way. In life, things happen and later, one moves on.

So you are being misrepresented in the media?

I will tell you something about the press in Ghana. I will say it here because I’m a very outspoken person. I’m sure it is also obtainable in Nigeria. What the press guys haven’t seen or heard , they will sit back and fabricate stories because they want to sell their papers.

For instance, the latest story in town is that ‘’Yvonne Nelson is pregnant for Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor, a Togolese footballer who plays for Manchester City as a striker. Where are they getting these stories from? I met Adebayor only but once. Why would anybody come up with this kind of story?

That’s why you never hear that Yvonne Nelson is granting interviews to the press. Whether I grant them interviews or not, they would still go ahead and write things I never said. Back in Ghana, I grant interviews to only two journalists.

All I know is that in the movie I shot recently, I played a role of a pregnant woman. Later, I twitted the photography on Twitter, saying ‘I’m playing the role of a pregnant woman in my new movie…that was all”

Sometimes, you sit back and you are quiet. At other times, you read these stories and you would want to laugh. In fact, some of the stories are shocking and damaging. But no matter what anybody would say, at the end of the day, this is a job that puts food on my table. They will continue to talk about me.

Your parents’ reaction!

My family is supportive. My mum knows the kind of a daughter she has. I live with my parents under the same roof. And most times, when they read these stories, they cannot help but laugh.

And that you were dating Jim Iyke?

Jim Iyke and I shot a movie in Ghana titled “Back to Back.” A Nigerian artiste came to Ghana to work. I can’t watch him struggle to go to the car park to board a taxi, or ride in a producer’s car. What we do as artistes is that we try to help ourselves.

I’m here in Nigeria and I’m sitting in Bobby’s car, the same way I tried to be of assistance to Jim Iyke. He was constantly sitting in my car, as I was picking him up as well as taking him back to his hotel after the day’s production. And before I knew what was happening, rumours started flying that Jim Iyke and I were dating. I guess all these things are happening to me because I’m the only single lady among my colleagues. Jackie Appiah is married just as Majid is married. There is no other single lady to attack apart from myself.

You are always keeping to yourself.

I never had a party in my life. I don’t smoke and I don’t drink either. If I’m not shooting, I’m always at home. I live a very simple life.

Do your actions on screen betray your true nature?

Well, I know how to play my roles very well. That’s what I can say.

People believe an artiste lives at least 25 percent of his or her real character in a role he or she plays in a movie?

I don’t agree with you. Does it mean that if one plays the role of a mad woman, there is the tendency that the person possesses some traits of madness in him or her. I know a couple of actors who play the role of pastors and yet they smoke and drink a lot. People should learn how to differentiate what we do on set and our real lives.

Your role in “Heart of Men”, a Ghanaian soft-porn movie discouraged some of your fans who wondered how much you were paid to expose some vital parts of your body in that movie?

Really! They were not happy with me? But that was one of my best films so far. I never exposed any part of my body. Why do you get it twisted? It was Jackie Appiah and Majid who exposed themselves. I only kissed. Jackie exposed her áss’ and nobody said anything as well as Majid did.

I remember kissing with Majid and John Dumelo. The only thing I did which I know people would raise eyebrow was the poster where I exposed part of my body, not in the movie. My pose in the poster was new to the Ghanaian and Nigerian markets.

Do you feel bad each time you kiss on set?

Why will I feel bad? If I feel bad, it means I’m not real on screen. It is not like deep kissing, as lovers do, because people are around us there.

Are you comfortable with the way the soft-porn movies are thriving in Ghana today?

I’m not in a position to defend what the producers are doing presently because most of them I guess want to sell their movies.

About three months ago, you played the role of Chief Bridesmaid to actress Mercy Johnson. Your fans are wondering when the wedding bell will ring for you?

Very soon. Just keep your fingers crossed, you will be informed.

Were you surprised when Mercy asked you to be her Chief Bridesmaid?

Yes, I was surprised but I was not surprised. At first, I thought she was playing a prank on me. It was when she insisted that I realised she meant it. I was very excited and happy for her. I came to support a friend .

Most times, you are in Nigeria. Are scripts not coming your way again in Ghana?

I shot about four movies in Ghana before embarking on this trip to Nigeria. Those who think I’m always in Nigeria don’t know anything about my movement. I’m hardly in Nigeria. And each time, I’m here, I’m always in a hurry to return to Ghana.

The way you talked about your Nigerian fans leaves room for suspicion. If given an opportunity, would you marry a Nigerian?

Yes, I love Nigerian men. Nigerian men are nice people. There are no two ways about it. I appreciate them and they are like brothers to us. When Nigerian men like you, they will walk up to you to tell you so. Sometimes, when I’m in Nigeria, I hardly remember that I’m not in Ghana except when there is power failure. That’s when it dawns me that I’m in Nigeria. The country is like home to me. The men appreciate what I’m doing presently on screen.

Is that an open invitation to the Nigerian men?

Yes, I love them and they love me too.

How would you describe the kind of relationship that exists between you, Jackie Appiah and Nadia Buari?

God created three of us differently. What Jackie has, Nadia doesn’t possess, and what Nadia possesses, Yvonne Nelson has not, and what I’m endowed with, they lack. I’m not competing with anybody in the industry.

If a producer has a role he wants Yvonne Nelson to play in his production, he cannot give that role out to another actress, except Yvonne Nelson. Just as a producer in Nigeria has Genevieve in mind when he is casting a role, nobody can take it away from her. I don’t know why there are lots of fighting, back-biting, hatred and beefing in the industry. They are my friends any way.

Did you experience a rosy childhood?

I grew up like every other average Ghanaian girl. I attended one of the best secondary schools in Ghana. I read Human Resource Management at the Central University College in Ghana. I grew up in a family of three children, I happen to be the last child.

What is it that your fans don’t know about you?

I’m a very funny and down-to-earth person. But at the same time, I’m a shy person too. People judge me from a distance because of the job I do. They should get close to understand who I am.

How often have you acted nude on set?

I wish I could do it, but I can’t. I have had a lot of offers to act nude but I rejected them. I love what I’m doing. I can’t see myself doing that for any price.

Do you have a love life?

I hardly talk about that part of my life. But I’m okay and happy with whoever, and whatever I’m doing presently with my life.

I mean, do you find time to love at all?

Of course, I fall in love because I’m human. I believe that no matter how hard or soft one tries to be, there is always a time, when he or she falls in love. People always fall in love and I’m no exception.

But I’m sure you have never suffered any heart break

When I started dating, I experienced a heart break. That was the first real relationship I ever had in my life.

…And you were hurt terribly!

Not really. It was a learning process for me.

You gave back to society last year when you set up a Foundation back in your country. Why the focus on school children?

I set up a Foundation called Yvonne Nelson Glaucoma Foundation, which was launched October 2010. Glaucoma has to do with the eyes and it’s a silent killer disease. My grandmother died of the disease. I decided to set up the Foundation to help create awareness about the deadly disease. I’m working with a team of experts in Ghana. That’s the only way I can give back to the society.

Nineteen Nigerian pilgrims to this year’s Hajj in Saudi Arabia have so far died, the private Guardian reported Friday, quoting Nigeria’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Ibraheem Minci.

Ambassador Minci listed the causes of death as including road accidents and natural causes. However, the head of the pilgrimage – Amir Hajj – has called for investigations into the death of a 75-year-old man, who is apparently one of the 19 who have died.

According to the Guardian, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’aad Abubakar, said the probe would reveal how and why the 75-year-old man fell from a high-rise building in Makkah.

Overall, the Saudi Arabian authorities have reportedly commended the conduct of Nigerian Muslims and officials in this year’s hajj.

Music/Radio › Dbanj To Receive Special Channel 0 Awards by ceomike(op): 12:43pm On Nov 03, 2011
D’Banj has been nominated for this year’s Special Recognition Awardat the upcoming Channel O Music Video Awards slated for Friday, 11 November in South Africa.

D’Banj follows in the footsteps of many of Africa’s prominent and successful musicians including K’NAAN who was given the Special Recognition Award in 2010, Brenda Fassie in 2009 and George Lee in 2008.

Being honoured by the Channel O Music Video Awards, which he also co-hosted with DJ Sbu in 2007, is special given that D’Banj released his debut album just six years ago and has made a huge impact both locally and internationally, with his recent signing onto Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music record label.

Since the release of his debut, No Long Thing in 2005, featuring the smash hit Tongolo, D’Banj has worked ceaselessly to create a career that is now the benchmark for 21st century African artists.

D’Banj’s second album, Rundown Funk U Up (2006) proved his ability to create club hits such as Why Me?. His hit-making ability was only reinforced in 2008 with the release of his third album, The Entertainer, featuring the singles Gbono Feli Feli, Kimon, Olorun Maje andEntertainer.

“It’s really an honour for us to be celebrating an artist such as D’Banj for this year’s Special Recognition Award. Besides the obvious success that D’Banj has had, one of the stand-out factors is that his career, his success and his path run parallel with the growth that we have seen in the African music industry since the inception of the Channel O Music Video Awards. To us he represents a breed of African urban artists who are the African dream,” Leslie ‘Lee’ Kasumba, Channel O Africa Manager said.

M-Net Channel Director Yolisa Phahle also said “His star has been rising for many years now. D’Banj is an artiste who has the ability to communicate and connect in a meaningful way. As a musician he is a trendsetter and as a presenter he is entertaining with a wonderful sense of humour. His success both at home and internationally is a testament to his great talent and I am in no doubt that this is just the beginning.”

D’Banj’s most recent big-hitter is also his most high profile: a remix ofMr Endowed featuring the inimitable Snoop Dogg that was released in February 2011.

His role as Nigeria’s first United Nations Youth Ambassador for Peace and the founder of the Koko Foundation for Youth and Peace Development says a great deal about D’Banj’s commitment to Nigeria and Africa.

The 2011 edition of the Channel O Music Video Awards comes off Friday November 11 from the Sandton Convention Center, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Politics › Two Students Arrested Over Threat To Bomb Presidential Villa, Nass - Vanguard by ceomike(op): 6:34pm On Nov 02, 2011
Two students of a secondary school in Kagara, Niger State who issued a threat text messages alleging purported plans by Boko Haram to attack the Presidential villa and National Assembly complex in Abuja have been arrested by the State Security Services, SSS.

Spokesperson of SSS, Ms. Marilyn Ogar, who disclosed this via a statement, Wednesday in Abuja, said the suspects aged 18 and 17 years, were picked up following thorough investigations conducted by the security agency.

Ms. Ogar announced, however, that both suspects have been handed over to their school authorities and parents for proper counselling.

According to her, “the circulation of several text messages about plans by the Boko Haram to attack specific targets in Abuja, FCT, have become rampant, causing apprehension and panic among residents of the FCT and its environs.

“One of such messages alleged purported plans by Boko Haram to attack the Presidential villa and National Assembly on the 28th October, 2011.

“However, following painstaking investigations, the Service succeeded in tracing it to two (2) persons who issued the threat text message with the aim of inciting a frenzy of fear and panic in the society. Both suspects aged 18 and 17 years, are boarding students in a secondary school in Kagara, Niger State.

“The two (2) suspects claimed they were encouraged to send such panic messages by an advertorial they saw in a National News daily of 18th October, 2011 that requested members of the public to volunteer information on the activities of Boko Haram.

“The service hereby wishes to urge parents to pay more attention to the activities of their children and wards both at home and in school. Particularly, the culture of providing GSM mobile phones for students in schools should be discouraged as giving young people of that age access to such devices distracts them from their academics and impacts negatively on their overall performance as seen in the recently released WAEC and NECO examination results.

“It also exposes them to several societal vices associated with social networking which are easily accessed through mobile phones.

Politics › I Am In The Race To Win - Gov Sylva (PM News) by ceomike(op): 6:14pm On Nov 02, 2011
Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva, says he is still in the race to clinch the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ticket for the governorship election in the state.

He stated this at a news conference in the wake of rumours that his party is not keen on giving him the ticket.

The rumours became rife after the party’s screening panel yesterday released the names of four aspirants that have been cleared to contest the party’s primary. He is not one of those cleared.

In his statement at the news conference, Governor Sylva said: “In the past few days, I have read all manner of reports in the media concerning our Bayelsa State, our Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and myself. Specifically, there have been reports that I have been disqualified or going to be disqualified by my party. These reports are unfounded, laughable, but disturbing. I have not been disqualified. And there is no basis for my disqualification.

“What is clear to me, my supporters, and indeed all lovers of democracy in our dear country Nigeria, is that there is a desperate attempt by certain forces to illegally exclude me from seeking re-election as Governor of Bayelsa State on the platform of the PDP.

On Thursday, 27 October, I appeared before the PDP Gubernatorial Screening Committee for Bayelsa State at our Zonal Secretariat in Port Harcourt. My encounter with the committee was warm and friendly. Consequently, I was issued with a Provisional Clearance Certificate with Serial number 0000012 dated 28 October 2011.

“On Sunday, 30 October, I appeared before the Gubernatorial Screening Appeals Committee in Abuja at its invitation. Again, there was nothing to worry about. The committee merely asked me to explain a few issues based on complaints they had received from certain interested quarters. Reports reaching me state without equivocation that this committee also upheld my clearance to contest the PDP Primaries slated for 19 November.

“As I speak, no organ of the party has informed me of anything to the contrary.

“I am in touch with the national leadership of our great party, including Mr. President. I have received solid assurances at the highest levels that the party would base all its actions concerning the Bayelsa Gubernatorial primaries on law. I am happy about that. As a sitting governor, I expect protection from my party and all its organs as all sorts of machinations can be plotted against me.

“I assure all – the people of Bayelsa State, my supporters and others – that I remain in the race for re-election as Governor of Bayelsa State on the platform of the PDP. I am in the race to win. I am a founding member of the PDP. I wish to remain a member of the PDP. And we all look forward to a free, fair and transparent contest.

“The decision to seek re-election is not personal. It was the collective decision of our people for a leadership that will consolidate the gains of the past four years. The battle is not about me. It is about Bayelsa State. And it is about the PDP. My overarching goal since assuming office four years ago has been to build a great Bayelsa State in which all Bayelsans – and indeed Nigerians – would be proud of.”

There have been a spate of deaths in the movie industry tagged Nollywood and whilst some look at it as normal, some are crying out that all is not well and something must be done.

I received this rebroadcasted message recently and the names in it included Austin Faani,Walter Anga,Leo Mezie,Ify Okeke,Oby Somina Okafor and Emeka Rollas…who is the originator of this broadcast?

This is what the broadcast reads.Could this be what is wrong with Nollywood?

You have a choice to believe me or not,I am not even hiding my identity.Evil lurks in the industry, many are gone and more will go if we don’t turn to God.70 per cent in the industry are not clean and the clean ones are not serious…God said to Abraham, show me one man that is holy in Sodom and Gomorrah,so that I will avert the destruction of the city and there was no one found!, Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed till date.

These days,we do worse than they did… men enjoy men! Women do same, fetish involvement,so as to outshine others! All these new generation chics and some producers, directors, who go occultic have so stained our industry and God is not happy.

We are not worth a naira in the presence of the Lord anymore, how then do we cry over death!God can never turn on us if we don’t turn on him first.

Let’s go back to the former way of film making…less envy, acknowledgement of God’s Sabbath day, stop immoral acts, stop juju(in African tone).

Please my people we still love ourselves no matter what is at stake,we wish not to cry again…Let’s make the change we need…God is still waiting for the change…We will never die young in Jesus name

According to reports the teen idol has been hit with a shock lawsuit from a 20-year-old woman who claims he is the father of her three-month-old baby.

The fan, named as Mariah Yeater, wants Bieber, whose reps have angrily denied the allegation, to take a paternity test, according to RadarOnline.

Bieber’s spokesman Matthew Hiltzik said: “While we haven’t yet seen the lawsuit, it’s sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims.

“We will vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations.”

In the writ, which is said to have been filed on October 31 in a California court, Ms Yeater claims she was 19 years old when she had sex with Bieber at a Los Angeles show last year.

“By 25 or 26 I want to see myself, like, married or start looking for a family.”

Last night, as the claims were reported, Bieber’s girlfriend Selen Gomez was pictured on the red carpet for the 2011 Fulfillment Fund Event at the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel.

Nairaland General › Nigeria Now World’s 6th Most Populous Country by ceomike(op): 11:35am On Nov 02, 2011
At 167 million people, Nigeria is currently ranked the sixth largest population in the world. This follows a report that the world’s population officially hit seven billion on Monday. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged world leaders to meet the challenges that a growing population poses.
NAN Correspondents at the UN report that Nigeria’s population is projected to increase from 390 million in 2050 to 730 million by 2100.
According to recent estimates by the UN Population Division by 2100 Nigeria will be the third most populous country in the world, next to India and China.
Speaking at a news conference at UN headquarters in New York to mark the milestone, Ban stressed the need for concerted action to address growing social and economic challenges of population growth.
He said the world was facing a number of problems, including famine in the Horn of Africa, fighting in Syria and global public anger at economic inequality.
According to him people have lost faith in governments and public institutions to do the right thing.
“Our world is one of terrible contradictions. Plenty of food but one billion people go hungry.
“Lavish lifestyles for a few, poverty for too many others.
“Huge advances in medicine while mothers die everyday in childbirth … and children die every day from drinking dirty water. Billions spent on weapons to kill people instead of keeping them safe.
“What kind of world has baby seven billion been born into?”
Highlighting some of the challenges in an expanding global community, Executive Director of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Babatunde Osotimehin stressed the need for the promotion of the rights and health of seven billion women, men and children.
“We must ensure that, in areas of the world where population is growing fast, we raise the status of women and young girls to be able to access education and make choices for themselves,” Osotimehin said at the press briefing.
“We also owe it to the 250 million women worldwide who require family planning and are not getting it to make it available,” he added.
The former Nigeria’s health minister said it was necessary to ensure safe pregnancy and delivery for every woman in addition to meeting the need of ageing populations in many parts of the world.

Celebrities › I Married For Love - Kim Kardashian by ceomike(op): 10:56am On Nov 02, 2011
Kim Kardasian after filing for divorce with her husband Kris Humphries insist she married Kris for love.

In a letter issued to her fans, Kim wants to clear every thought that she married Kris for selfish reasons.

The 31-year old has now posted a message on her official website addressed to her fans, claiming that she never meant to hurt anyone by ending her marriage to Kris, admitting that she “got caught up with the hoopla” of filming her TV show.

Kardashian wrote: “This is probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write. I see all of the support and I am so thankful for my fans, friends and family who are helping me through this difficult time.”

“I am trying not to read all the different media reports but it’s hard not to see all the negative ones. First and foremost, I married for love. I can’t believe I even have to defend this. I would not have spent so much time on something just for a TV show!”

She continued: “I share so much of my life on a reality show, that contemplating whether to even film my wedding was a tough decision to make, and maybe it turned out to not be the smartest decision. But it’s who I am!”

“We filmed Kourtney giving birth, Khloe getting married, break ups, make ups, our best moments and our worst moments. These were all real moments. That’s what makes us who we are. We share, we give, we love and we are open!”

The former Playboy model went on to explain: “Everyone that knows me knows that I’m a hopeless romantic! I love with all of my heart and soul. I want a family and babies and a real life so badly that maybe I rushed in to something too soon.”

“I believed in love and the dream of what I wanted so badly. I felt like I was on a fast roller coaster and couldn’t get off when now I know I probably should have. I got caught up with the hoopla and the filming of the TV show that when I probably should have ended my relationship, I didn’t know how to and didn’t want to disappoint a lot of people.”

She added: “I’m being honest here and I hope you respect my courage because this isn’t easy to go through. But I do know that I have to follow my heart. I never had the intention of hurting anybody and I accept full responsibility for my actions and decisions, and for taking everyone on this journey with me. It just didn’t turn out to be the fairy tale I had so badly hoped for.”

Addressing rumours that she made $18million off the back of her nuptials to Kris, the star explained: “There are also reports that I made millions of dollars off of the wedding. These reports are simply not true and it makes me so sad to have to even clarify this.”

“I’m so grateful to everyone who took the time to come to my wedding and I’ll be donating the money for all the gifts to the Dream Foundation. I’m sorry if I have hurt anyone, but my dad always told me to follow my heart and I believe now that I really am.”

Politics › Nigerian Court Dismisses Petition To Void Presidential Win by ceomike(op): 3:25pm On Nov 01, 2011
A Nigerian election tribunal Tuesday threw out an opposition petition seeking to nullify President Goodluck Jonathan's victory in April 16 elections.

A panel of five judges unanimously ruled that Jonathan "won the election", which had been labelled free by election observers.

Alleging electoral malpractices in parts of the country, the opposition Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) of former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, went to court seeking to overturn Jonathan's win.

"The petition fails in its entirety and is hereby dismissed," head of the presidential election tribunal Justice Kumai Akaahs said.

The CPC said it would appeal the judgment, which was handed down under tight security at the complex of Nigeria's appeals court in the capital Abuja.

"We have judgment of the conscience, judgment of the people and judgment of God. We will certainly go on appeal," CPC chairman Tony Momoh told reporters after the ruling was read out.

Jonathan was declared the winner of the election with 57 percent of the ballots, easily beating his closest rival Buhari's 31 percent.

The court said Jonathan "scored the majority of lawful votes cast at the election and secured the mandatory one quarter of votes cast at the election in each of at least two third of all the states in the federation , "

The result of the election sparked rioting in northern Nigeria which left at least 800 people dead, according to Human Rights Watch.

Buhari, a Muslim from northern Nigeria, had dissociated himself from the rioting. Jonathan is a Christian from the south of the country.

Local and international observers adjudged the election fair and credible, marking significant improvements in a country with a long history of vote fraud.

Nigeria's population of over 160 million is roughly divided in half between Muslims and Christians and includes some 250 ethnic groups.

The north is mainly Muslim while the south is predominantly Christian.

Sports › Fifa Clears Shola Amoebi And Victor Moses To Play For Nigeria by ceomike(op): 3:14pm On Nov 01, 2011
FIFA clears Shola Amoebi and Victor Moses to play for Super Eagles

Nigeria Football Association (NFF) applied for a switch to make them eligible for their country of birth.

“Fifa has finally cleared Foluwashola Ameobi and Victor Moses to play for Nigeria at international level,” NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said.

“Fifa declared that both players have been cleared based on the entire documentation remitted by the NFF.”

The two players are likely to be considered for next month’s friendlies against Botswana and Zambia.

Under Fifa rules, players who have represented one country at junior level can play for another at senior level if they meet the qualifying stipulations.

Shola Amoebi
Ameobi, 30, who has played for England Under-21s, has not featured for the Three Lions which made him eligible for the nationality switch.

The Newcastle striker was born in Zaria, northern Nigeria, before moving to England with his parents at the age of five.

He was first called-up by the national team 10 years ago – a call he turned down but recently agreed to play for the Super Eagles.

Ameobi was in line for his Nigeria debut in January in the friendly against Guatemala but could not play because his switch had not been approved.

Moses, who plays for Premier League side Wigan, was born in Kaduna.

The 20-year-old has lived in England since the age of 11, and has been capped by his adopted country at under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels.

As Moses has dual nationality and has not played for England’s senior side, he is eligible for Nigeria.

The player was picked for March’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Ethiopia, but stayed away because Fifa was considering his nationality switch application.

Fifa recently removed the age limit for players who want to switch national allegiance.

Previously players who had represented one country at youth level had to make the choice to change by the age of 21.
