Health › First Man Cured Of Hiv by ceomike(op): 5:19pm On Nov 14, 2011
“The UN report that since HIV came into existence about 30 years ago, about 30 million people have died of the disease”. The aboved phrase might not written any longer as there seems to be a breakthrough in the search of the cure of HIV

The story is about a man Timothy Ray Brown who has been cured of the disease.

Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are.

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.

“He has no replicating virus and he isn’t taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV,” his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. “It makes me very happy,” he says of the incredible cure.

The development of anti-retroviral drugs in the 1990s was the first sign of hope in the epidemic, transforming the disease from a sudden killer to a more manageable illness that could be lived with for decades. But still, the miraculous cocktail of drugs is expensive, costing $13 billion a year in developing countries alone, according to Reuters. That figure is expected to triple in 20 years–raising the worry that more sick people will not be able to afford treatment.

Although Brown’s story is remarkable, scientists were quick to point out that bone marrow transplants can be fatal, and there’s no way Brown’s treatment could be applied to the 33.3 million people around the world living with HIV. The discovery does encourage “cure research,” according to Dr. Jay Levy, who co-discovered HIV thirty years ago, something that many people did not even think was possible years ago.

Politics › France To Help Nigeria Fight Boko Haram by ceomike(op): 3:54pm On Nov 14, 2011
French foreign minister Alain Juppe has pledged to help Nigeria combat its extremist Boko Haram militia, which has killed hundreds of people this year in terror attacks.

"We shall fight against this phenomenon. We are ready to share any information. We are ready to coordinate our intelligence services. We are ready also to give our help in training cooperation," Juppe told reporters after talks with his Nigerian counterpart Olugbenga Ashiru in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on Saturday.

“France is directly concerned with the question of terrorism,” Juppe said. “It goes against our interest in the region and so we are in complete solidarity with the countries of the region around the sub Sahara and around the Sahel…we are ready to share our information. We are ready to coordinate our intelligence services. We are ready to give our help in training.”

“Nigeria is France’s number one partner in the Sub-Sahara. Nigeria is a member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and it is also a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council. Our two countries have believed in responsibilities regarding peace and security in Africa and the World.”

Juppe also discussed economic and commercial relations with Nigeria, saying that economic ties are growing and that the volume of Franco-Nigerian trade has reached 4.5 billion Euros. French oil giant Total is one of the main energy producers in Africa’s largest oil producer.

“France is Nigeria’s fourth largest supplier and our exports are growing by 20% yearly. In addition, France invests 2 billion Euros per year in Nigeria. I am going to encourage trade, businessmen and investors to come over to Nigeria.”

Celebrities › Baba To File Multi - Billion Naira Lawsuit Against Ndlea by ceomike(op): 10:56am On Nov 14, 2011
Nollywood actor, Mr. Babatunde Omidina, popularly called Baba Suwe, said on Sunday that he would file another suit worth billions of naira against the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly dehumanising him while in the agency’s custody.

Baba Suwe
His lawyer, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, said at a press conference in Lagos thatBaba Suwe would file the fresh suit after November 24, when judgment would be delivered in the N100m Fundamental Human Rights Enforcement suit he had earlier filed against the NDLEA.

Baba Suwe, who regained freedom on November 4 after 24 days in NDLEA custody, had earlier filed the suit at a Lagos High Court in Ikeja, demanding N100m compensation from the agency for allegedly violating his fundamental human rights to liberty through unlawful detention.

According to Aturu, the fresh suit is to make NDLEA account for various dehumanising conditions the agency subjected Baba Suwe to.

Aturu said his client was treated like “a common criminal” when he was arrested on October 12. He said officials of NDLEA put chains in his leg and were almost beating him before “reason prevailed.”

Aturu also alleged that on November 2, Baba Suwe was taken to an NDLEA hospital in Ikoyi, where his “system was flushed” against the actor’s consent. He alleged that after the flushing,Baba Suwe started defeacating. He added that gloves were put in his hands and the NDLEA officials asked the actor to be searching for banned drugs in his excreta.

He said, “We are already working on an action, that will take the NDLEA to account for some of its actions; preferably after the judgment on November 24. This is not about Baba Suwe, this is about the fundamental human rights of Nigerians. We are going to file the suit against NDLEA and it is going to be in the neighbourhood of billions.”

Baba Suwe, while fielding some questions from journalists, alleged that the entire process of his arrest and detention for alleged drug trafficking was a set up, an allegation his lawyer also corroborated.

Aturu said, “On October 12, 2011, while on his way to board an Air France flight to Paris for his own private engagement, he was accosted by a woman at the counter of the NDLEA. The woman asked her to proceed toour see some NDLEA officials on suspicion that he had ingested some banned narcotic substances.

“It became very clear to us that NDLEA had made up its mind to arrest him even before doing any scan. So they apparently were acting on a tip off, because as he got to the airport the woman just accosted him. She asked him to meet the NDLEA officials and they now took him to the scan test and they then told him that he had tested positive.”

Celebrities › I Did Not Give Any Engagement Ring To Anyone – Tuface by ceomike(op): 9:36am On Nov 14, 2011
Just last week, there was the news all over the web, forums and social networking sites that top artiste, Tuface Idibia did give one of his kids mother an engagement ring. Tuface is out to deny such.

Popular blogger, Linda Ikeji reports on her blog:

I was asked to pass a message o…so don’t shoot the messager…:-)
Contrary to popular reports, Tuface didn’t give any ring, diamond or otherwise, to any woman…dead or alive…(that’s how I was asked to write it, :-)). Tuface is not engaged to anyone and has no such plans at the moment. He continues to be a great dad and that’s enough for him.

‘They’ also said – any tweet, fb message, bb broadcast, from any woman claiming to be engaged to the music star should be disregarded. When Tuface gets engaged, he will make the announcement himself. – But don’t hold your breath…:-)

The story continues……

Foreign Affairs › A Day Old Baby Seized From Nigerian Parents In Uk (pics) by ceomike(op): 6:50pm On Nov 13, 2011
A day old baby born to the family of Mr and Mrs Musa has been seized by the police in the UK. Mr Musa hails from Adamawa state while his wife Mrs Gloria Musa hails from Abia State.

Three months earlier, the same police, allegedly acting at the behest of the Haringey social service, had equally seized five children of the Musas on the grounds that the mother was a sex worker.
Musa 300x182 UK seizes day old baby from Nigerian parents

Musa's Family

The newly born baby’s seizure in hospital took place on June 12, 2010 while its other five siblings were taken into custody on April 8, 2010. But more than one year after, the six seized children are said to remain in the custody of the Haringey social service while every effort to get them to rejoin their parents has reportedly failed. The social service, according to reports, secretly gets interim care order (ICO) on monthly basis from the court to validate its action because the evidence they peddle against the Musas is untenable. The action is generating ripples both in Nigeria where the couple hails from and the UK. Although Sunday Vanguard could not ascertain the intervention of the Nigerian High Commission in the UK on the matter, a letter from an Advocate and Public Interest Intervener on behalf of the embattled mother of the seized kids asked the Haringey social service to forward documents in the Musa family case to the High Commission.

In Nigeria, the House of Representatives has taken up the matter, urging the Federal Government to persuade her British counterpart to ensure that the Musas are reunited with their kids until evidence show any wrongdoing. The House claimed paternity tests conducted on the children showed they belonged to the Musa couple.

The sponsor of the motion that led to the resolution, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, from Ikorodu Federal Constituency and chairman of the House Diaspora Committee, among 27 other lawmakers, described what the Musas are going through as the height of inhumanity. Narrating what she went through when nine policemen invaded the hospital in June 2010, to seize the baby, Mrs. Musa said it was “bizarre, unthinkable and worrisome”.

Before the Musa kids were ‘held’
According to her, “this atrocity was meted out to me and my new born baby, Queen Elizabeth, at Norwich Park Hospital at about 3 a.m. on June 12, 2010”. She went on: “Regrettable, painful and inhuman as it were, the action of the police did not only cause pandemonium, discomfort, unnecessary tension, and embarrassment to the patients and staff of the hospital, it also revealed a Haringey that is devilish in character and lacking in human feeling, amateurish in style, brutish in operation, and dastardly in her acts of executing a hidden agenda that runs counter to westernized forms of civility in police modus operandi. It is unbelievable that a country like the U.K,highly respected as an icon of democracy with commendable human right records, could stoop so low to authorise the police to perpetrate acts that are antithetical and inimical to the cause she goes all out to protect.

“My joy of safe delivery was cut short; as i was physically manhandled, emotionally battered, and psychologically traumatised by the ill-treatment from the British police .While recuperating from the pains of labour, I was awakened by the unwelcomed guests whom I would never forget in a hurry. Nine hefty looking police personnel, who by the suicidal nature of their mission(to take away my new born baby, as they told me in unmistakeable terms) would be best described as “kill joy”, Naturally, I, like every other woman, would prefer being killed to letting it (baby) go easily, hence, I held on and closely to it too. Unperturbed that the baby could be dangerously hurt, considering its age–less than few hours old- and capitalising on the weakness, unstable, and feeble state of mine who is left with little or no strength, after much exertion of energy during labour, the devil-may-care personnel of the Haringey police station applied every force at their disposal, unleashing terror on my helpless self and bruised me all over until they over powered me and took my baby.

“My request for their reasons and the authority empowering them to dispossess me of my new born baby was denied, rebuffed, and rejected with brazen arrogance in these words, `We did not need to show you or give you either’. The hospital staff insisted that the baby should not leave the hospital premises. To ensure a fulfilled mission and that i was completely debilitated and knocked down, the police removed the child from where i could sight it, and placed it in the intensive care unit downstairs all alone. This is sheer wickedness.

“My family has done practically nothing to deserve this painful and unwarranted suppression. Barely three months earlier (08-04-2010), five of my children were, without cogent reasons, abducted by eight policemen from Haringey; and while the case for their release was still being battled, nine policemen, again, in an unprovoked attack, swooped on me and my new born baby in the hospital, seizing the baby, thereby denying it of its right to natural love, breastfeeding and care by its biological parents. This is injustice of the highest order.

“As deprived , wounded, and bleeding as my family is, I request a thorough investigation of this issue by the British police ,with a view to ameliorating the situation and returning my children to me and in good health too. I state in unmistakeable and categorical terms that I and my husband are capable, loving, caring, and very competent to adequately cater and provide for our children without any external assistance or recourse to public funds. We need them returned to us as nobody can take care of them better than us.”

In a position insinuating that the Haringey social service was avoiding being confronted in the family court, on the seizure of the children, because it has no concrete evidence of its claim of the mother being a sex worker, one Maurice Kirk cited at least one instance when the social service personnel secretly obtained an interim care order (ICO) from the court on the issue. The said instance, according to Kirk, was on September 5, 2010 when, whereas himself (Kirk) and the Musas were in the court premises, the Haringey council procured the ICO in their absence. Kirk stated: “On August 30 (2010), Mrs. Justice Hogg had specifically ordered that the case be heard on September 5 (2010) with the sole intention for the parents to bring further evidence and for the (Haringey) council to produce the documents upon which they relied.

I arrived the court (on Sept. 5) and spent the first hour trying to establish where the case was being heard as no one knew. Separate from me and unknown to me, the totally distraught parents were doing the same from 9.30 onwards.

“I eventually demanded a judge and a hearing be convened or there was going to be ‘trouble’. Staff clearly indicated something unusual was going on.

“At 4p.m., District Judge Berry informed the three of us that the case was already over!

It transpired that the case had taken place in the very same building without any of us being told and obtaining, for the fourth time, a further one month detention order (IC0) by the simple use of a telephone call from the council to the court”.

After the alleged court abuse, Kirk stated that they went to Hornsey police station, near Haringey council, where the police had first held the children but the police refused to disclose their custody records or copy interview tapes needed for the hearing in the Holborn family courts.

The Musas, according to him, were being blackmailed to leave the UK without their kids.

Kirk also said he and the “frustrated parents went to the Nigerian High Commission in the UK on September 6, 2010, to establish what progress, if any, had happened since the parents had first contacted them in June 2010.

“We were assured by the Nigerian High Commission representative that it was fully aware of the seriousness of the separation of young children from their parents and ‘all that could be done was being done’. We obtained no documentation, however, to support their apparent answer that the council was ignoring the commission’s concerns”, he added.

“On September 7 (2010) we, three, decided to visit the Haringey council to examine the children’s medical records upon which the council relied for the ‘snatch’ being lawful.

The parents were not just refused, they were denied any information as to whether the children were even still alive!”

`Prisoners in hell’

Kirk is not the only person in the UK protesting the seizure of the Musa children. Peter Bellett, in a letter dated October 28, 2011, to the Nigerian High Commissioner in the UK, implored the High Commissioner to “use the powers of your good office and do everything that needs to be done including taking this matter to the highest government level to ensure that this family are reunited and sent back to their homeland without delay”.

Bellett added: “The Musas do not want to remain in the UK and have refused the offer from Haringey Council of an application for British passports. They cannot return to Nigeria without their children; so they are virtually prisoners in a hell created by forces beyond their control”.

In the House of Representatives resolution on the Musas, entitled, “Saving Mrs. Gloria Musa and her six children from Haringey British Police”, and dated October 25, 2011, it noted: “Sometime in June last year, the Haringey British Police stormed the peaceful home of the Musas and forcefully took custody of their five growing children to an undisclosed destination, without any concrete evidence against them”.

The House said it was aware that series of paternity tests have been conducted and evidence has been brought forward that confirms the paternity of all six children in favour of Mr. and Mrs. Musa.

It expressed worry that this

“Nigerian family has been subjected to the worst psychological crisis, and are currently in a state of mental trauma from the way their case has been handled by the British Police and since June 2010 till date, Mr. and Mrs. Musa have had no contact with their children”.

The House urged the Nigerian government to persuade the British government to try the Musas in a court of competent jurisdiction if need be, and ensure that justice is done.

It also called on the British government to ensure that the Musas are re-u

Celebrities › Jim Iyke Arraigned In Court Over N15m Fraud by ceomike(op): 5:32pm On Nov 11, 2011
Source: http://www./2011/11/11/jim-iyke-in-n15-million-fraud-mess/

Nollywood big boy and fashion mogul, Jim Iyke, was on Thursday, November 10, 2011, arraigned for Criminal Breach of Trust, Criminal Force, Assault, Cheating and Criminal misappropriation before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court.

The Police Prosecutor, Chijoke Okezie, told the court that the popular actor defrauded an unsuspecting lady to the tune of N15 million (Fifteen Million Naira) on the pretense that he would give her…
15 percent equity shares of his entertainment outfit, Untamed Records Ltd. According to court document, the lady, Habiba Abubakar, had wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police asking that the matter be investigated. Surprisingly, investigation into the case revealed that the accused, Jim Iyke, indeed ‘deceived’ Habiba Abubakar.

Further findings also revealed that the complainant paid the money into the actor’s Oceanic Bank account No. 00500173691, but he diverted the money for his personal use. It was also said in court that Habiba confronted him about their business deal, only for him to resort to beating her and threatened to kill her if she disturbs him again.

According to the prosecuting officer, the offences committed by Jim Iyke contravened sections 312, 265, 322, 397 and 309 of the Penal Code. When the charges were read to him in court, the bad-boy actor pleaded not guilty, like many accused used to do. His counsel, Esther Uzoma, then prayed the court to grant him bail on self recognition, while promising that he would not jump bail.

In his ruling, Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. He however added that the sureties must be responsible Nigerians and reside within the jurisdiction of the court. The case was subsequently adjourned to December 9, for the substantive case.

Hmm, na wa o! I thought they say he just bought two posh cars recently. Hope say the babe money no dey inside o! Hopefully, the court’s verdict will provide the answer.

Some have described the action as ‘holier than thou’, many are simply saying they won’t attend that kind University where undergraduates are compelled to kneel down like ‘primary school pupils’ for coming late to events. Whatever you may think, that’s Covenant University for you. A place where things are done differently, may be some time they do over stretch it.

To know a little more about the school, below are some of their rules…

* If you miss a certain number of required church attendance, you will be suspended.
* If you leave school without proper documentation and allowance, you will be suspended.

* If you are caught bullying, you will be expelled.

Those are just some of the rules, there are many more. In all, this gives you an insight into the rules governing students conduct in Covenant University. Kindly share your thoughts.

Music/Radio › World Renowned Rapper, Heavy D Dies At 44 by ceomike(op): 1:16pm On Nov 09, 2011
Source: http://www.

Veteran US rap star Heavy D has died at the age of 44.

The self-proclaimed “overweight lover” of hip-hop became one of rap’s top hit-makers with wit and a positive vibe.

Andrew Weitz of William Morris Endeavour Entertainment confirmed the rapper’s death in Los Angeles, without giving a cause of death or saying where he died. Mr Weitz declined to provide further details.

Dwight Arrington Myers, the lead rapper of Heavy D and the Boyz, and his crew released their debut album Living Large in 1987. Their hits included Now That We Found Love, Who’s the Man and Somebody For Me.

The New York-born rapper was one of the genre’s most integral stars in the late 1980s and early 1990s, as it relied on new voices and star power to fuel its phenomenal growth in the mainstream.

The deep-voiced rapper’s earliest hit, The Overweight Lover’s in the House, played up his hefty frame. But while that nickname would stick, his weight did not become part of his routine, like the Fat Boys. What drew people to his music was his singular style, which celebrated an easygoing, party vibe – sometimes humorous, sometimes inspiring and almost always positive.

In the mid-1990s, Heavy D became president of Uptown Records, the label that released most of his albums and was the home to acts like Mary J Blige and Jodeci.

He also created the theme songs for sketch comedy shows In Living Colour and MADtv and acted on the TV shows Boston Public and The Tracy Morgan Show, as well as in the films Life and Step Up.

Combined with the fusion of the “New Jack Swing” musical style, Heavy D was a constant presence on the charts, and also a go-to figure for several performers. He collaborated with Michael Jackson on the 1991 single Jam and the 1997 duet Keep It Coming with BB King.

His latest album, Love Opus, was released in September, and he performed a medley of his past hits at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards last month.

He also had a cameo appearance in the new movie Tower Heist, starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller.

Lieutenant Mark Rosen of Beverly Hills police said Heavy D died in a Los Angeles hospital after collapsing at his apartment building.

Lt Rosen said officers were dispatched to the building on Tuesday morning after receiving a report of an unconscious person laying on a walkway.

They found Heavy D was conscious and communicative but had difficulty breathing. He was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Centre where he later died.

Lt Rosen said detectives found no signs of foul play and believe Heavy D’s death was medically related. He said the rapper “was returning home from shopping. He experienced difficulty breathing while walking into his condominium building. He was being assisted up to his apartment by building personnel when he collapsed in an exterior hallway”.

Actor-comedian Tommy Davidson said: “Most know Heavy D as a rap icon. I considered him a brother who made an indelible mark on me as a performer and a human being. I miss him already.”

“I’m so glad that we got to work together for his performance at last month’s BET Hip-Hop Awards,” said Stephen Hill, BET’s president of music programming and specials.

“Hev was focused, energetic and happy. He worked hard, as he always had, to excite the crowd.

“Our condolences go to his family and specifically his daughter who he doted on.

“He was a unique figure in hip-hop and will be missed.”

La Toya Jackson, who performed with Heavy D at a tribute concert for Michael Jackson last month, joined the tributes, tweeting: “My heart goes out to the family and (loved) ones of Heavy D. I am sooo sorry for your (loss). You will be in my prayers.”

MC Hammer added: “We had a lot of great times touring together. He had a heart of gold. He was a part of what’s good about the world.”

Rapper turned TV and film actor Ice T also tweeted: “I feel sick. Everyone should stop for a second, take a breath and realise how lucky you are to be alive, then appreciate every second with your luv ones.”
