Science/Technology / 6 Histagram Secret Nobody Shares by CEZY(m): 8:59am On Jul 29, 2020
Before starting Humble & Whole, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Instagram. With our first blog, we hardly used it. And I just thought of it as the platform filled with endless selfies and pictures of food. But now, Instagram is one of my favorite social media networks, and it is one of three that we use for the blog. So, after falling in love with Instagram, my question became, “how do I grow our following?” And I thought, there has to be some secret that I’m missing. I was tired of seeing blog posts about being successful on Instagram that gave the same points about writing a killer bio, cultivating your insta aesthetic, and that darn follow-unfollow method (can you sense my eye roll?). So today, I’m sharing with you the six Instagram secrets that other bloggers hardly share. Keep reading to find out the practices that have helped us grow our account organically.

Instagram is one of the best platforms that you can use for finding and interacting with your target audience. We’re sharing six Instagram secrets to help you boost your engagement, increase your followers, and find your target audience.
BOOSTING ENGAGEMENT
If you haven’t noticed, engagement is everything on Instagram. With the new algorithm, posts are ranked according to the comments that they receive. Comments are now more valuable than likes. And Instagram is incredibly particular. Comments are only factored into your post’s ranking if they are longer than three words. So if someone leaves their favorite emojis or “Love this!”, it’s as if you didn’t receive a comment at all.

But why is post ranking important? Well, you’ve also got to keep in mind that a user’s Instagram home feed now mimics Facebook. Posts aren’t appearing in chronological order anymore. The feed only displays the content that it feels the user has taken interest in. The new algorithm affects the ability of both your followers and non followers to find your posts. However, there’s no need to fear. Here are three great strategies to help boost your engagement:

1. Ask a question in your caption, or request some information from your audience. It’s a no-brainer that people enjoy talking about themselves. With your next caption, take the time to construct an easy-to-answer question, and you should definitely see an increase in comments. Take a look at how Kendra and I recently did this recently on the following post:

Getting Instagram Engagement
Bonus tip: Respond to your comments in a timely manner. If you can respond immediately to the comments you’re getting in the first hour of your post, that helps Instagram realize that your post is pretty important due to all of the activity.

2. Engage with your current followers just as often as you seek potential followers. Ok, remember how I just said that Instagram’s algorithm will affect both your followers and non followers? Your posts will not show up on your followers’ home feed if they do not regularly interact with your brand. So, if you work on getting new followers all the time and never interact with your current following, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. Keep your brand on your followers’ minds by regularly liking and commenting (can you guess which is more important?) on their posts.

Bonus tip: If you have some down time before your post is scheduled to go out, spend that time interacting with your followers. When I did this before posting as usual, it doubled our engagement.

3. One of the absolute best ways to increase the amount of engagement on your posts is with comment/engagement pods. A comment pod is a group of Instagram users who agree to like and comment on any of the user's new posts as soon as they see them. Comment pods are helpful because with them, they help encourage other users (outside the pod) to leave comments of their own if they see that other people are already interacting. More people are starting to learn about comment pods, but it can be hard to find a pod for your specific niche. Don’t be afraid to take the initiative to start your own (that’s what we did and it really is rewarding). This can be done by direct messaging other account owners that post content related to yours and asking if they would like to join your comment/engagement pod. Keep in mind that if you host your engagement pod on Instagram, it will only allow you to add 15 pod members. If you would like to host a bigger pod, your other options are to create a Facebook or Slack group.

BUILDING YOUR FOLLOWING
Now that we’ve covered how to increase your engagement on your posts, let’s discuss how you can grow your following.

1. Follow active users. If you are already looking at accounts similar to your own for followers (and we hope that you are), take it a step further than randomly following people on that account’s followers list. Instead, follow the people who have already demonstrated that they are active. Meaning, you would follow the people who are actually liking images and/or leaving comments. These people will be more likely to also show love on your posts once they are following you. And whatever you do, please don’t resort to the follow-unfollow method. It’s just plain icky. People catch on quickly to what you’re doing, and it gives your brand a bad impression.

2. Explore relevant hashtags. One strategy that we love to use to find new followers is by exploring hashtags. This method, when done correctly, offers a great return. Choose a hashtag that you normally place in your post’s caption or comments, and make sure it is one that actually attracts your ideal audience (we’re talking more about this next). Like any pictures that catch your eye and leave genuine comments when you can. Try to set aside at least 30 minutes a day to explore hashtags (and when we say explore, we mean typing that hashtag into the search bar and looking through the images that come up). This strategy alone is what helped us to start increasing our following quickly.

PSST!: If you want to know the exact hashtags that you need to use to get noticed on Instagram, check out The Instagram Hashtag Catalog.

FINDING YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Now you know how to get more engagement on your posts and how to grow your following. But how exactly do you find the audience that you’re looking for on Instagram? You can find your target audience through hashtags. Here is our best tip for utilizing hashtags:

Use hashtags of moderate popularity for your posts. A mistake that we see bloggers and business owners make countless times on Instagram is using hashtags with well over a million lifetime posts. For some reason, people believe that using those immensely popular hashtags will help them grow their following quickly. And actually, the opposite happens. When you use those mega hashtags like #love, #peace, #Jesus, you’re making it much harder for people to find your content, because thousands of people are using those hashtags the same moment you are.

#Love has over 900 million life time posts! Woah!
#LOVE HAS OVER 900 MILLION LIFE TIME POSTS! WOAH!

PSST!: If you want to know the exact hashtags that you need to use to get noticed on Instagram, check out The Instagram Hashtag Catalog.

A better way to use hashtags is to have the majority of your hashtags between 80-500K lifetime posts. These are large enough to know that they are being searched/used regularly, but also small enough for your content to stand out and for people to find your posts before they are lost in the feed. We recommend dedicating about five of your hashtags for less than 50K lifetime posts. Especially if you are utilizing our tips for engagement, you will see that with these smaller hashtags, your post remains in the top posts for longer.

That gives people the opportunity to find your content easily. Please don’t think that people on Instagram aren’t searching hashtags to find content. We started Humble & Whole’s Instagram from zero, meaning that the only way people could find our content was from hashtags. And they did.

We hope that you learned some new tips from this post, and that you’ll begin implementing them today. Which strategies have worked the best on insta for you? We want to hear from you! Let us know in the comments below!

Science/Technology / What Is Seo? A Beginner’s Guide by CEZY(m): 7:20pm On Jul 26, 2020
Search engine optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, is an umbrella term for a whole range tasks you perform both on and off your website. The goal is to attract the attention of the search engines with your website.

Search engines such as Google crawl websites, indexing the information found on every single site, and then providing their users with a list of websites that they determine to be relevant to the search.

Sounds complicated, right?

It’s not only complicated, but search engine algorithms are closely guarded secrets. And to keep everyone on their toes, they change up how they crawl, rank and reward sites on a regular basis.

What is good SEO practice?
Good SEO practices mean that your website will rank well for the niche and market you are targeting. In other words, when someone Googles for information in your industry, you want your website to appear on the first page of the Google (or Bing, or Yahoo) results.

SEO also tells the search engines what your site is about. At heart, SEO is about all of the content that is on your website. It is the pages you choose to create, the topics of your blog posts and the images you use to support your words.

There are technical and design elements that also feed into the bigger picture, but your content strategy is the main part of your SEO strategy.

SEO is somewhat mysterious to small business owners and all but the most tech-savvy. However, it’s really not so complicated. You can easily get a grasp on the basics and do enough so that you’ll attract search engine traffic to your site. Once you learn the basics, there are many more advanced techniques you can learn if you’d like.

Why SEO Marketing is Necessary
At the heart of SEO marketing is a website that is easy for both users and web robots to understand.

Search engines are increasingly sophisticated in working out how relevant a website is, but ultimately the information they receive is based on how real users interact with the websites.

If you want your site to rank well, you need to put most of your SEO efforts into providing information that is useful and relevant for your audience.

Over the years, there have been lots of efforts by dodgy SEO bods to try to scam the system. The Search Engines constantly fight back, and the result is that it gets harder and harder to find loopholes to exploit.

This is a good thing. Think about it, when you use a search engine to find information, you want to be presented with websites and options that are relevant to your search, not a bunch of websites that don’t offer the information you’re looking for.

It also means that if you follow a content marketing led strategy for your SEO, you’re building on solid foundations that won’t be penalized when the next Google algorithm update is released.

SEO strategy: Optimise your images
Good SEO practice for images is often overlooked by many website owners.

If you follow some simple steps, you’ll be getting extra SEO goodness that your competitors are probably overlooking.

1. Provide ALT-tags for all your images
ALT tags are a readable description of the images on your web page. That’s pretty much it, it’s not very complicated. And Wordpress makes it really easy to add your ALT-tags to images.

Some quick tips around adding your ALT tags:

Keep the text short
Be descriptive
Use your keyword if possible, but….
Avoid keyword stuffing
Try to mention the page topic
2. Write SEO-friendly file names
Don’t leave your file names generic (such as IMG342234.jpg), but give them a short title describing what they are
Just make sure it’s not identical to your ALT tag, and fit the keyword in if it works. But again, don’t force the issue
Use hyphens in file names (the search engines read hyphens as a space)
3. File size
Page load times matter. A site that chugs along, taking forever to load, is not going to encourage anyone to stick around. The biggest culprit is poorly optimised image files.

The good news is that it’s easy to keep your images small in size but big in quality.

Download a free plugin such as WP Smush to further optimise your image files.
SEO strategy: Keywords
Keywords are at the core of SEO. A keyword is a word or phrase that’s related to your website or your business. These are the terms people search for in search engines. The goal of SEO is to rank in the top search engine results pages for your chosen keywords.

There are no hard and fast rules for using keywords, merely some general guidelines. It’s good to use keywords in your titles and sub-titles. Generally, near the top of your content is a good place to put them, such as in your first paragraph. Use your keywords naturally in your website’s written content, descriptions of images, and anywhere else you have text.

1. Finding Good Keywords
Your SEO strategy starts with identifying good keywords. These should be keywords that relate to your website and that your potential customers are likely to search for.

There are tools you can use to help you with your keyword research. Google provide a free tool in the form of their Keyword Tool. It’s free to use, and all you have to do is set up an AdWords account.

Look for keywords that have a high search volume and low competition. High search volume means many people are searching for the term. Low competition is important because that means there are fewer websites targeting those same keywords.

When sorting through the data, keep in mind that search volume doesn’t have to be extremely high. As long as it has several thousand searches or more a month, it’s sufficient.

2. Using keywords
If this all sounds really complicated, don’t worry. If you’re writing content for your industry and audience, you’ll naturally use the keywords that your visitors are be searching for.

Install a plugin such as Yoast, and after you’ve finished writing a page or post for your website, pop in the keyword you’re trying to rank for.

The plugin will give you tips on how to tighten up what you’ve done. So all you need to do is go through your article and tweak some words or sentences.

3. Tips for using keywords
Instead of targeting words or short phrases, target long phrases, sentence fragments and whole sentences. These are called ‘long tail keywords’ and they have far less competition. Examples would be ‘how to sell on ebay,’ ‘how can I find new design customers’ or ‘why won’t my baby sleep through the night.’

You can also cut down on competition by using geographical terms in your keywords. For example, ‘Brighton plumbing service,’ ‘East Sussex lawyers,’ or ‘South East IT service.’ In addition to reducing competition, you’ll also rank for searches by people in your local area.

4. Keywords and your blog
The best way to get the most out of your SEO efforts is to put a blog on your site and write regularly. A blog gives your audience a reason to keep coming back to your site for more new content. It also gives you a chance to use more keywords on your site. Plus, search engines love websites that add fresh content.

In the past, marketers stuffed content with keywords. They used keywords as much as possible because it attracted more search engine attention. However, as the search engines have gotten smarter, this technique no longer works. Use your keywords naturally and make sure you don’t use them too much because you can get penalized.

SEO strategy: backlinks
The basic idea with backlinks is to post content somewhere else with a link leading back to your site. For example:

You can post content on a different platform – such as YouTube – with a link to your site
You can guest post – write articles for other websites with a link leading back to your site
You can list your site on reputable directories
Backlinks are great for business beyond the SEO advantages. By being visible across the internet, you create opportunities for new clients and business partners to find you.

A quick word about listing your site on directories. Look for credible link exchanges and directories, as Google will punish your site if you get caught up in a link farm. A good rule of thumb – if someone is asking you to pay for a link, run a mile. Also ignore all the spam emails that will start filling up your inbox.

Another great way of getting backlinks to your website is through publishing guest posts. This comprehensive article has a list of over 700 guest posting sites that you can dig into. Make sure you bookmark it for future reference!

DIY resources for SEO
If you’re interested in a really comprehensive breakdown of SEO, then I recommend checking out this Beginner’s Guide to SEO. It’s a beast of download! But it is chock full of all the information you need to get started.

Saying that, the magnitude of the PDF and breakdown might be a bit overwhelming. I know that I’m guilty of hording untold ebooks and PDFs that I’ve downloaded and never read.

Another way of learning some of the dark arts of SEO is to take an online course. The problem with SEO is that there are lots of dodgy bods out there, just ready to take your hard earned money in return for promises and tactics that just don’t work.

Outsourcing SEO
Many small businesses choose to outsource their SEO needs to experts who can get much better results. This is completely up to you, but it’s good to do it yourself at least at first. For one thing, you may find that it’s something you can do yourself and get good results.

But even if you outsource, it’s good to have a basic understanding of SEO so that you know what’s being done for you. Additionally, you can make changes or take over if necessary.

If you do decide to pay a company to do SEO for you, make sure you get a clear understanding of exactly what they’re going to do in return for your money.

And remember, SEO is a long term strategy. If someone is promising super-fast results and it all seems a bit too good to be true, chances are they don’t have your best interests at heart.

In conclusion
Wow…that was a lot of information. So, let’s summarise.

SEO is the term used for different approaches you can take to get traffic back to your website organically (paid advertising is not SEO).
Consistent, clear and user-friendly content is at the heart of a good SEO approach
Optimise your images
Use keyword tools to help and inspire, but don’t get too literal in your approach. And no keyword stuffing!
Write for your humans first, not for the search engines.
Get credible backlinks to your website

Do you have a business without a website?

We understand the reasons why you might resist building one for your business: “I’m not tech savvy”, “they’re too expensive”, “I don’t have the time”, or the infamous “I have enough business and I don’t need one”.The reality is, you don’t need to be tech savvy, getting a professional website for your business can be cheap and easy, and to make it even simpler for you – not having a website is costing you time and money.

Check this out… 81% of people research a business or service on the internet prior to making a purchase decision. That’s 25.92 million people searching for businesses online. Yet, 46% of business owners listed “Business currently doesn’t need one” as their #1 reason for not having a website. We’re not statisticians, but we can see that there’s a glaring disconnect here.

Still unsure if your business needs a website? Keep reading…
1. Having a website will attract new customers to your business and make you more money.

We like this stat so much, we’re mentioning it twice: 81% of people research a business or service online prior to making a purchase decision. If you don’t have a website, you have no chance at capturing a share of this market.

Your website can be available 24/7/365 even when you’re not. A website acts as your “always-on” business advocate during and outside of office hours.

Websites help you convert more of your existing referrals, because most people still do their own research and stack you against your competitors.

2. Add instant credibility to your business simply by having a website.
The 21st century consumer is a skeptic; in fact, 56% of people stated that they won’t trust a business without a website. Having a good website instantly boosts your credibility as a legitimate business.

First impressions count, and websites allow you to make a very strong impression with a well designed introduction for your business.

A website can help showcase your expertise and better position your business. A website can be your number one tool for standing out in a crowd.

3. It’s not as hard, or as expensive, as you think.
You don’t need to be tech savvy to get a website. Many web development companies have very simple signup processes which make the process quick and painless for you.

It can be very cost effective. Websites offer a better return on investment than any other form of advertising. If you’re planning to market your business, a website should be your first priority.

Over time the relatively low investment of getting a business website will pay dividends by driving you new customers and building your brand. Plus, it’s a legitimate business expense and a tax write off.

4. Having a website will end up saving you time.
Whether you’re trading emails, taking calls, or sending out proposals – communicating with potential customers takes time. Your website can save you that time by providing answers to common customer questions and inquiries. What does this mean for you? You can spend your time doing more valuable things.

5. Position yourself and stay in control of your brand.
A website acts as a platform for your messaging and shapes the online perception of your business in a way that your social media channels cannot provide.

The platform allows you to position yourself in the market to get the exact type of customers you’re looking for.

Many business owners have been reviewed online, sometimes unknowingly and/or negatively. How does this affect you? 79% of users who read online reviews, believe them. Combat that negativity by posting your own positive testimonials.

To summarize… You need a website, and it’s easier than ever to get one.
So again, while we believe that not every person needs a website, we’ve shown you why every business needs a website. There’s a very small and inexpensive barrier to entry, and there is a massive opportunity to help grow your business.

If you’re going to do one thing today to help your business be more successful, it’s to make getting a website your top priority.

It’s easy to be a better business. Get a website.

Ten reasons why you need a website for your small business
1. A website makes you look professional
84% of today’s consumers think a website makes your business more credible than companies who only have social media profiles. Your website is also the perfect place to show off any professional certifications or awards your business has.

Beyond that, having your own website lets you create a branded email address (e.g. diana@yoursite.com) which adds a level of professionalism to all of your correspondence, especially if you’ve used a personal email address to conduct business up until now.

2. Your website can attract new customers through Google

You can show potential customers what they’ll get when they work with you by displaying high-quality photography on your website. Take a look at how the UK restaurant Blackhouse has accomplished this on their website:

The Blockhouse business needs a website to show pictures of its food

You can also use your website design, along with the featured images, to give people a sense of what it feels like to enter your physical location. This works particularly well if your brand is closely tied to the “feel” of your location, like the Canadian restaurant Stormcrow Manor.

The Stormcrown Manner need a website to give a feel for its decor

Another thing you can do is publish important information about your products and services on your website to make sure you’re attracting the right customers. For example, if you run a restaurant, you might want to mark any items on your menu that are gluten-free so people with Celiac or other conditions that make gluten dangerous know they can eat in your establishment.

4. You can display your best reviews and testimonials prominently on your website
Displaying your best reviews and/or testimonials prominently on your website is a great way to establish social proof. This might come in the form of personal customer testimonials, like this review on the website of the non-profit organization STEAMLabs:
If your business has appeared in articles from newspapers or popular local blogs, you can also feature those, as Stormcrow Manor has done below:
Publishing your best reviews on your website also serves the secondary purpose of creating a permanent archive. This means that even if third-party review sites close at some point in the future, you’ll still have access to your best reviews.

5. A website can encourage customers to contact you
A website is a great place to make your contact information easily available to potential customers. You can even publish your contact information in a header or footer so it appears on every single page. Snakes and Lattes, a small chain of board game cafes, has placed phone numbers for all four of their locations in their website footer:

17 Ways to Increase Traffic to Your Website
Ask a marketer or business owner what they’d like most in the world, and they’ll probably tell you “more customers.” What often comes after customers on a business’ wish list? More traffic to their site.

1. Advertise
This one is so obvious, we’re going to look at it first. Paid search, social media advertising and display advertising (try our Smart Ads Creator!) are all excellent ways of attracting visitors, building your brand and getting your site in front of people. Adjust your paid strategies to suit your goals – do you just want more traffic, or are you looking to increase conversions, too? Each paid channel has its pros and cons, so think carefully about your objectives before you reach for your credit card.

2. Get Social
It’s not enough to produce great content and hope that people find it – you have to be proactive. One of the best ways to increase traffic to your website is to use social media channels to promote your content. Twitter is ideal for short, snappy (and tempting) links, whereas Google+ promotion can help your site show up in personalized search results and seems especially effective in B2B niches. If you’re a B2C product company, you might find great traction with image-heavy social sites like Pinterest and Instagram. Here's more advice on making the most of social media marketing.

3. Mix It Up
There is no magic formula for content marketing success, despite what some would have you believe. For this reason, vary the length and format of your content to make it as appealing as possible to different kinds of readers. Intersperse shorter, news-based blog posts with long-form content as well as video, infographics and data-driven pieces for maximum impact.

4. Write Irresistible Headlines
Headlines are one of the most important parts of your content. Without a compelling headline, even the most comprehensive blog post will go unread. Master the art of headline writing. For example, the writers at BuzzFeed and Upworthy often write upward of twenty different headlines before finally settling on the one that will drive the most traffic, so think carefully about your headline before you hit “publish.”

5. Pay Attention to On-Page SEO
Think SEO is dead? Think again. Optimizing your content for search engines is still a valuable and worthwhile practice. Are you making the most of image alt text? Are you creating internal links to new content? What about meta descriptions? Optimizing for on-page SEO doesn’t have to take ages, and it could help boost your organic traffic.

6. Target Long-Tail Keywords
Got your high-intent keyword and popular keyword bases covered? Then it’s time to target long-tail keywords, too. Long-tail keywords account for a majority of web searches, meaning that if you’re not targeting them as part of your paid search or SEO efforts, you’re missing out.

7. Start Guest Blogging
Before you say it – no, true guest blogging isn’t dead, despite what you may have heard. Securing a guest post on a reputable site can increase blog traffic to your website and help build your brand into the bargain. Be warned, though – standards for guest blogging have changed radically during the past eighteen months, and spammy tactics could result in stiff penalties. Proceed with caution.

8. Invite Others to Guest Blog on Your Site
Guest blogging is a two-way street. In addition to posting content to other blogs, invite people in your niche to blog on your own site. They’re likely to share and link to their guest article, which could bring new readers to your site. Just be sure that you only post high-quality, original content without spammy links, because Google is cracking way down on low-quality guest blogging.

9. Go After Referral Traffic
Rather than trying to persuade other sites to link back to you (a tedious and time-intensive process), create content that just begs to be linked to.
When Larry wrote about the kick in the proverbial teeth that eBay took from Google’s Panda update, we managed to secure a link from Ars Technica in the Editor’s Pick section alongside links to The New York Times and National Geographic. Not too shabby – and neither was the resulting spike in referral traffic. Learn what types of links send lots of referral traffic, and how to get them, in this post.

10. Post Content to LinkedIn
LinkedIn has become much more than a means of finding another job. The world’s largest professional social network is now a valuable publishing platform in its own right, which means you should be posting content to LinkedIn on a regular basis. Doing so can boost traffic to your site, as well as increase your profile within your industry – especially if you have a moderate to large following.

11. Don’t Neglect Email Marketing
So many businesses are focused on attracting new customers through content marketing that they forget about more traditional methods. Email marketing can be a powerful tool, and even a moderately successful email blast can result in a significant uptick in traffic. Just be careful not to bombard people with relentless emails about every single update in your business. Also, don’t overlook the power of word-of-mouth marketing, especially from people who are already enjoying your products or services. A friendly email reminder about a new service or product can help you boost your traffic, too.

12. Make Sure Your Site is Responsive
The days when internet browsing was done exclusively on desktop PCs are long gone. Today, more people than ever before are using mobile devices to access the web, and if you force your visitors to pinch and scroll their way around your site, you’re basically telling them to go elsewhere. Even if you have a basic website, you still need to ensure that it is accessible and comfortably viewable across a range of devices, including smaller smartphones.

13. Make Sure Your Site is Fast
Ever found yourself waiting thirty seconds for a webpage to load? Me neither. If your site takes forever to load, your bounce rate will be sky high. Make sure that your pages are as technically optimized as possible, including image file sizes, page structure and the functionality of third-party plugins. The faster your site loads, the better.

14. Foster a Sense of Community
People want to speak their minds and weigh in on subjects they feel passionately about, so building a community into your site is a great way to start a conversation and increase traffic to your website. Implement a robust commenting system through third-party solutions such as Facebook comments or Disqus, or create a dedicated forum where visitors can ask questions. Don’t forget to manage your community to ensure that minimum standards of decorum are met, however.

15. Make Yourself Heard in Comment Sections
You probably visit at least a few sites that are relevant to your business on a regular basis, so why not join the conversation? Commenting doesn’t necessarily provide an immediate boost to referral traffic right away, but making a name for yourself by providing insightful, thought-provoking comments on industry blogs and sites is a great way to get your name out there – which can subsequently result in driving more traffic to your own site. Just remember that, as with guest posting, quality and relevance are key – you should be engaging with other people in your niche, not dropping spam links on unrelated websites.

16. Examine Your Analytics Data
Google Analytics is an invaluable source of data on just about every conceivable aspect of your site, from your most popular pages to visitor demographics. Keep a close eye on your Analytics data, and use this information to inform your promotional and content strategies. Pay attention to what posts and pages are proving the most popular. Inspect visitor data to see how, where and when your site traffic is coming from.

17. Get Active on Social Media
It’s not enough to just share content through social channels – you need to actively participate in the community, too. Got a Twitter account? Then join in group discussions with relevant hashtags. Is your audience leaving comments on your Facebook posts? Answer questions and engage with your readers. Nothing turns people off quicker than using social media as a broadcast channel – use social media as it was intended and actually interact with your fans.

The 10 Most Common Digital Marketing Mistakes
Digital marketing evolves rapidly, and you often find yourself trying out new tools and tactics daily. When you’re constantly venturing into uncharted territory, you’re bound to make mistakes. Don’t sweat it; making mistakes is how you learn.
That said, not all mistakes are made equal. The mistakes listed here are more about your mindset than they are about a tactical error, such as sending out an email without testing the links. You’ll inevitably make tactical mistakes in your marketing, and you’ll bounce back. But making the mistakes described here limits your growth, and if you avoid them, you should see a significant positive effect on your results.
Focusing on eyeballs instead of offers
This might shock you, but you don’t have a website traffic problem. When you aren’t making sales, the solution is not to get more eyeballs on the page. Eyeballs can be bought, but the messaging and offers that you deliver to those eyeballs are the biggest difference makers.
When things go wrong, really wrong, don’t spend energy on optimizing the landing page for more Google traffic or scheduling more tweets about the offer. Instead, change what you’re offering to meet the desires of your market. First, prove the offer; then, turn the traffic on.
Failing to talk about your customers (and their problems)
People don’t care about your product; rather, they care about how your product can make their life better. Stop talking about your product’s features and instead describe how your product can transform the customer in a meaningful way.
Business is pretty simple. You get paid to move people from a “Before” state to a desired “After” state. In the Before state, customers are discontent in some way. They might be in pain, bored, frightened, or unhappy for any number of other reasons.
In the After state, life is better. They are free of pain, entertained, or unafraid of what previously plagued them. People don’t buy products or services; they buy transformation. In other words, they buy access to the After state. A great offer genuinely moves a customer to a desired After state, and great marketing simply articulates the move from the Before state to the desired After state.
Most businesses that fail, particularly at startup or when entering new markets, do so because they fail to offer a desired After state (the offer is no good) or they fail to articulate the movement from Before to After (the marketing is no good).
Needless to say, getting clear on the desired outcome that your offer delivers is fundamental to the success of your marketing.
Asking prospects for too much, too soon
Imagine that a nice, good-looking, successful guy walks into a bar and immediately proposes marriage to the first single woman he sees. Although she may want to get married someday, and from a pure “feature set” perspective he’s a good catch, that doesn’t mean she’s ready to commit to him. And it doesn’t mean that she wants to commit to a marriage right now.
This idea seems super obvious when you put it in terms of human relationships, but for some reason, marketers often “propose marriage” (ask prospects for a major commitment) too early when marketing. Your business might be marketing Business to Consumer (B2C) or Business to Business (B2B), but every business is actually marketing Human to Human (H2H).
As a result, the offers you make to prospects and existing customers should progress in the same way that people develop normal, healthy human relationships. Human relationships go through a process, and the same is true of businesses and their customers. How can you structure the offers you make to prospects and new leads in a way that helps them progress through the relationship?
Being unwilling to pay for traffic
There was a time when search engine optimization (SEO) and social media was easy, and free traffic from the likes of Google and Facebook was reliable and plentiful. Now, however, although search and social media marketing are still important, the days of free-and-easy traffic are over.
Today, reliable and high-quality website traffic is bought and sold like grain or gasoline. If you want a reliable source of gasoline, you go to the gas station and purchase it. Similarly, reliable website traffic is a commodity, and if you want to market at scale, you need to go to the traffic store and buy it. The web has no shortage of traffic stores (Google, Bing, Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, and more) that are more than willing to sell you high-quality website traffic at a fair price.
Being product centric
When most businesses are marketing, they focus on the product. However, the businesses that last don’t define themselves by the product(s) they sell. Instead, they define themselves by the market they serve.
For example, in the 1920s, a French fashion designer and businesswoman published a picture of a simple black dress in Vogue magazine. Before this time, wearing black was reserved for periods of mourning. Since its introduction a century ago, however, the “little black dress” has become an enduring wardrobe staple for many women. The French fashion designer who published that picture in Vogue was none other than Coco Chanel, founder of the Chanel brand.
Although Chanel has sold many “little black dresses” in its time, the company has not defined itself by even this iconic product. Instead, Chanel sells everything from clothing and jewelry to fragrances and skin care products, all to women with a taste for fine fashion.
A product does not a business make. Identify who you’re serving and advocate for that market by creating the products and services your customers want and need.
Tracking the wrong metrics
Digital marketing is trackable, almost to a fault. You can, for example, use Google Analytics (a free program) to determine the sales of persons visiting your website from Ohio, on Tuesdays, and when using an iPhone. Although that data might be absolutely relevant to your business, every business should be tracking two overarching metrics: Cost of Acquisition (COA) and Average Customer Value (ACV).
Cost of Acquisition is the amount of money you must spend to acquire a single customer. For example, imagine that you sell men’s dress shirts and acquire new customers by using Facebook ads. Say that you determine that it costs $40 in ad spend to acquire each new customer. You’ve therefore determined that the Cost of Acquisition (COA) for this offer is $40.
Now, for this same shirt offer, you want to calculate the Average Customer Value, or ACV. You can calculate this in a number of ways, but our favorite metric is to calculate the immediate value of a new customer. In the example, each new shirt sale generates $20 in net profit (revenue minus expenses), and, on average, a new customer buys two shirts. So each new customer results in $40 in profit for the business.
This is good news because it means that this business can generate new customers with this offer and marketing campaign at a break-even point. Any additional sales made to these newly generated customers result in additional profit for the business.
There is a time and place to dive deep into the numbers, but always remember that the amount it costs to acquire a customer and the average value a new customer brings to the business are the most important metrics to track.
Building assets on other people’s land
Although networks like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube give you access to billions of people, focusing 100 percent of your attention on creating audiences on these platforms is dangerous. These platforms can, and will, change their rules from time to time, and those changes may not be in your favor.
Instead, focus on building media assets that you own, particularly your email list. You should absolutely build connections on major networks like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, of course, but look to migrate those connections to an asset you have more control over.
Focusing on your content’s quantity instead of quality
The truth is that the Internet doesn’t need another blog post, podcast, or YouTube video. Much has been written about the amount of content added to the web each day. It is, indeed, a staggering amount. Our social media feeds and email inboxes are crammed with content.
That said, the Internet does lack remarkable content, and if you can provide it, you will get traction from it. Instead of creating ten new blog posts over the next month, put ten times the effort into creating a single remarkable post. Then, prime the pump by forcing some eyeballs on your masterpiece by buying traffic to it.
Not aligning marketing goals with sales goals
If you own or work for an organization with a sales and marketing department, you know that these two teams don’t always see eye to eye. Marketing and sales fight with one another because they have different goals. Marketing thinks it’s all about “awareness,” whereas sales just cares about … well, sales. Marketing gets annoyed at sales for overpromising and under delivering, and sales gets annoyed at marketing because the leads aren’t “sales ready” and there aren’t enough of them.
The key to fixing this situation is to get marketing and sales on the same page. Literally.
Both departments need to understand that they serve different positions on the same team, and the goal isn’t awareness, or sales, but rather happy, successful customers. To achieve this goal, marketing must generate awareness and leads, and sales must close those leads, but if the customer experience isn’t amazing, everyone has failed.
Allowing “shiny objects” to distract you
This mistake, more than any other, is responsible for the demise of businesses that market their businesses online. New channels, tools, and tactics spring up on a daily basis in this fast-moving industry, and your best bet is to ignore them. Digital marketing is less about the “digital” and more about the “marketing.”
Instead of becoming distracted by the new, concentrate on what has always worked. Focus on acquiring new customers with great offers and supporting those acquisition efforts with high-quality content and a sound traffic strategy. Focus on improving your email follow-up and the measurement and optimization of your campaigns.

9 Compelling Reasons Why Your Business NEEDS a Professional Website[\b]
If you’re a small business owner or you’re just starting out, like many, you may think there’s no benefit in having a website when you can do everything on social media. Or maybe you think you can’t afford a professional website so you get a freebie and do it yourself instead.
Perhaps you’re in the generation that didn’t grow up with computers, you don’t use a computer so you think your customers don’t use computers. You think if you are not tech savvy why bother with a website. But even if you are an established business that has relied on word of mouth and think you are doing quite well thank you, there are several reasons why your business needs a professional website too.
I believe, even with all that you can do on social media, and even if you’ve been in business for several decades, unless you do not want to grow your business or you’re about to retire and travel the world, your business needs a website and preferably one that is professionally designed and developed.
1. YOUR BUSINESS WILL GAIN CREDIBILITY
2. IT SAVES YOU MONEY IN THE LONG TERM
3. CUSTOMERS CAN BE KEPT INFORMED
4. A WEBSITE IS ALWAYS ACCESSIBLE
5. A WEBSITE ENABLES YOU TO TARGET A WIDER AUDIENCE
6. IT PROVIDES A MEDIUM TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK
7. A WEBSITE SAVES YOU TIME
8. A WEBSITE CAN IMPROVE CUSTOMER SERVICE
9. YOU OWN AND CONTROL YOUR WEBSITE

Properties / *9 Proven Ecommerce Marketing Techniques To Boost Your Online Sales* by CEZY(m): 9:16am On Jul 16, 2020
Are you struggling to pick up the right e-commerce strategies that will help drive traffic, conversions, and sales?
1. Upsell relevant products
Ensure that your upsells are related to the original product.
It should be sensitive to your customer’s anticipated price range
2. Create a sense of urgency
How to create a sense of urgency
Here are some crafty ways how you can create a sense of urgency to entice prospects to make a purchase:

Show stock levels. You may add alerts that indicate your current stock levels. An obvious example here is to notify customers if an item is already low in stock.
Sell limited-edition products. A lot of marketers are always using this strategy (selling limited edition pieces) as it creates a sense of urgency among buyers.
Show how many people are interested. Another way to ramp up buyer competitiveness is to show how many people are viewing or “thinking of buying” a certain product.
Display how many people bought in the last 24 hours. Create scarcity by tying concrete and definite information with the limited availability of an item. Showing your current stock levels is an effective way to do this. Another way is to alert your customers of the number of people who have purchased in the last 24 hours.
3. Use live chat
A live chat feature will also help you know the most common problem that is often experienced by your customers. This can come in handy in resolving customer issues and improving your sales.

Hence, it is important to take this feature into consideration when selecting the best plugin for your e-commerce site.
4. Start a blog
Developing a retail blog will allow you to develop a competitive advantage over your competitors, give them expert advice, and increase the visibility of your brand.

You can also deliver them valuable and helpful content, which is a lucrative marketing method for retailers of all shapes and sizes. For instance, you are a WordPress plugin developer, and one of your users is experiencing an issue with one of your plugins.
9. Be active on social media
Being an e-commerce marketer, note that there are campaigns that you run that might look different on various social media platforms. Not to mention that not every platform would be tailored to your needs.

Because e-commerce sites are highly visual, you have to show off your products, because your success on social media mostly depends on the images you use to drive attention, website traffic, and sales.

Here are some popular social media platforms that you can consider:

#Facebook
Facebook is the biggest social media platform in the world and provides you with several sales options to implement.
#Instagram
Instagram (also owned by Facebook) is another attractive platform that you can use because it’s highly visual in nature.

It lets users tag brands and businesses in their own posts, as well as promote products that they find relevant.
#Twitter
Twitter is another fantastic platform e-commerce brands can use.

With over 800 million users, 52% of users are saying that they bought an item after seeing it first on Twitter.

Sharing information and linking your product pages on the platform is one of the best ways to start a conversation and driving traffic to your site.
#Pinterest
Pinterest is a great platform, which particularly targets women ages 18 to 49.

That said, one particular feature that makes this platform quite interesting for e-commerce brands is rich pins. These provide users with links, references, and product recommendations for achieving a particular look, project design, decor objective, and so on.
