A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Edo State, Francis Onabis has appealed to the leadership of the party to support Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

Onabis in a statement signed in Lagos by his Media Officer, Ayokunle Oloye, said it will be undemocratic for the party not to recognize the leadership of the National Assembly who are its members.
“Their emergence is good for democracy in Nigeria. In an as much they are our party members, they were free to contest for the post of the president of the senate and Speaker,” Onabis said.

Onabis warned that the party leadership may be overheating the polity if Saraki and Dogara are sanctioned over the manner they emerged as Senate President and Speaker respectively.

Onabis said while the party leadership must not condone indiscipline of its members, it must also provide a level playing ground for all members at all time.

Onabis urged the leadership of both assemblies to work in line with the APC manifestos, stressing that it’s unhealthy if they form an opposition against the Buhari led administration.

“In as much as they are prepared to make the necessary change in the senate and work with both executive and judicial arm of government for the betterment of the Nation in line with our party blueprint for a new Nigeria, APC leadership must give them total support.”

He warned that the overall goal of the APC to bring positive change must not be traded on the alter of internal rancor, saying all arms of government have roles to play to make the APC-led Federal Government succeed.

PoliticsWill APC Breakup? by ChaleeBendel(op): 12:12pm On Jun 11, 2015
Last Tuesday’s humiliation of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC and the ensuing bad blood has drawn assertions from its foes that the party was only formed to win power and not to govern.

By Emmanuel Aziken, Political Editor

Chief Olisa Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary tried to play down his enthusiasm over the distress of the ruling party yesterday.

“We want them to survive because the key to the stability of the country is in the survival of the party because they are in power,” Metuh said in a telephone discussion. That was a farfetch from the Metuh of before who before now had been severally quoted as describing the APC as group of power seekers only united by a common quest for power.

Last Tuesday as the power quest by the different tendencies in the party peaked during the National Assembly leadership contests, references to Chief Metuh’s questions on the survival of the ruling party inevitably came to mind.

That question was further driven by the APC’s terse rebuttal of the election of the four presiding officers, none of whom got the endorsement of the party.

Senator Bukola Saraki emerged as Senate President despite the party’s inclination for Senator Ahmad Lawan while even more agonising for the ruling party, Senator Ike Ekweremadu of the PDP returned to office as the Deputy President of the Senate. It was the first time in the Fourth Republic that a bipartisan leadership had been thrown up in the Senate.

In the House, the party’s favourite, Femi Gbajabiamila lost to the unofficial candidate, Yakubu Dogara while the favoured candidate for deputy speaker, —Moguno was edged out by Lashun Yusuf who strode to office on the back of the rebellion spearheaded by Dogara.

Senegalese Marabouts Stall Buhari’s Entry into Aso Rock

By Kayode Sesan

Fresh indications emerged on Monday on the real reasons President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to officially move into the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

According to a Villa source who spoke to BREAKING TIMES on Monday on condition of anonymity, President Buhari will not take residence at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa until the necessary “spiritual cleansing” has been carried out at the Villa by a team of Senegalese Marabouts.

“The Senegalese Marabouts engaged to carry out the cleansing of the Villa before Buhari moves in are yet to arrive. It is not immediately clear why they have not arrived. But I can authoritatively tell you that the President will move in to the Villa once the cleansing is done”, the source said.

The source debunked claims by Presidential Spokesman Garba Shehu that the President was yet to move in as a result of ongoing renovation work. “It’s a blatant lie. The Villa has been renovated and completed even before President Jonathan left office. So what is he saying? The Villa, without renovation is in good enough shape for any President to function. The renovation was only carried out as a routine requirement for the new President”, the source disclosed.

Since his inauguration as President on May 29, 2015, President Buhari has been operating officially from the Defence House, Maitama and sleeps in one of his private residences in Aso Drive, Abuja. This has drawn complaints from several Presidential Villa staff who say Buhari’s refusal to move into Aso Rock is slowing down the business of governance.

During the regime of the late Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, it was common practice for Marabouts flown in from Mali and Senegal to perform spiritual cleansings in Aso Rock. A similar practice was witnessed during the administration of the late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua. In spite of these heavy spiritual fortifications, General Abacha died on June 8, 1998 after a suspected case of alleged poisoning at the Defence House, Maitama, where President Buhari currently uses as his official headquarters. President Yar’ Adua died on May 5, 2010 while serving his term in office as President.

On his part, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has also stalled plans to move into his Aguda House official residence at the Presidential Villa as a sign of respect for his principal. The Vice President has also been constricted to functioning from a private residence in Abuja.

It is not clear how long the current situation will last. A state house correspondent told TheCable on Friday that it could take another two weeks.
