President Hollande signs bill into law after Constitutional Council dismisses legal challenge by opposition party. French President Francois Hollande has signed a gay marriage and adoption bill into law, a day after the country's Constitutional Council threw out a legal challenge by the conservative opposition. Hollande, trying to turn the page on months of bitter opposition to the measures, said it was "time to respect the law and the Republic". The Constitutional Council approved the bill on Friday, which was also the International Day Against Homophobia. The ruling cleared the way for France to become the 14th country to legalise same-sex marriage. French deputies approved the bill in parliament last month after a several days of often stormy debate. Recent polls suggest that opinion in France is fairly evenly split on both gay marriage and adoption. Conservative challenge The main opposition UMP party of former President Nicolas Sarkozy immediately challenged the move on constitutional grounds. Friday's statement by the Constitutional Council, however, said same-sex marriage "did not run contrary to any constitutional principles", and that it did not infringe on "basic rights or liberties or national sovereignty". The council did say that gay marriage did not automatically mean the "right to a child": the "interest of the child" would be the overriding factor in such cases, it ruled. Reacting to the ruling Friday, Jean-Francois Cope, UMP party chief, told TF1 television: "It is a decision that I regret, but that I respect." 'Celebration time' Hollande had given warning that he would brook no resistance. "I will ensure that the law applies across the whole territory, in full, and I will not accept any disruption of these marriages," he said. Gay rights groups hailed the decision as a watershed. "Now it's celebration time," said Nicolas Gougain, spokesman of the LGBT association representing the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. Gay rights watchdog SOS Homophobie added: "Our country has taken a great step forward today although it's regrettable that it was taken in a climate of bad faith and homophobic violence." The issue of gay marriage has divided France, which is officially secular but overwhelmingly Catholic. Protests against the bill drew hundreds of thousands, with a handful of hard-core protesters clashing with police. Violent protest Late on Friday, between 200 and 300 protesters gathered in central Paris to denounce the ruling backing the bill and calling on Hollande to resign. One police officer was injured after a flammable liquid was thrown in his face. Earlier, a group of bare-chested men wearing white masks staged their own protest against gay marriage on one of the bridges over the Seine. They call themselves the "Hommen" - a riposte to the bare-breasted feminist protesters known as the "Femmen". Opponents of the law plan another major protest rally in Paris on May 26. As the French bill got the green light to become law, a report by the European Union's Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) highlighted the problems that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people still face across Europe. It said two-thirds of the community were still afraid to show their sexuality in public - and a quarter had been victims of physical or verbal attacks. I cant even believe what im reading...what re they seeking for from the same sex... what is the joy... what is the benefit...wish somebody will answer all those questions for me! The group appealed to the president to address the ‘lopsidedness’ in federal appointments. A group, the National Coalition of Yoruba Youth Council, NCYYC, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to address what it termed as “obvious” marginalization of the Yoruba race into federal appointments. Rising from its emergency meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Coalition said the Yoruba race is presently marginalized in the appointments into key positions at the federal level. In a communiqué issued at the end its emergency meeting in Akure, Ondo State and signed by Jimoh Akeem, President, and Kelvin Babalola, Secretary, the group said the Yorubas have been “relegated to the back door” by Jonathan’s administration. The group therefore appealed to the president to urgently address the lopsidedness in the federal appointments to ensure even sharing of appointments among the different regions in the country. The communiqué reads, “It’s sad that as a race, the Yorubas have been relegated under this present government. The marginalistion is obvious in board and parastatal appointments. To make the matter worse, the race is also being marginalized in employment and social infrastructure distribution. “We are appealing to President Goodluck Jonathan to urgently address this irregularity and ensure that each region is well represented in his cabinet, federal boards and parastatals,” it said. The group also appealed to the federal government to set in motion necessary machinery to start the exploration of vast deposits of bitumen in Ondo State to stop the over reliance on petroleum. It noted that exploration of bitumen would create jobs for the teeming Nigerian youth and liberalise the nation’s economic base. for the first time i hear yorubas speak.... a new dawn, what did you think? The State Government did not disclose the present salary of the Sultan. The Sokoto State Government has raised the salary of the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, and other chiefs by about 60 per cent. Jabbi Kilgori, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Environment, made this known to newsmen at the end of the State Executive Council meeting in Sokoto on Wednesday. Mr. Kilgori identified the beneficiaries as all councillors in the Sultanate, the 63 district heads, all village heads as well as their scribes. The current salary being enjoyed by the Sultan and the traditional rulers in the 63 districts of the 23 loc According to Mr. Kilgori, the gesture is in accordance with importance attached to the traditional institutions in the state as the custodians of culture, religion and tradition. ” What they were receiving hitherto as personal monthly emoluments was nothing to write home about and this increment is a morale booster to them,” he said. The commissioner said that traditional rulers were now being given bigger roles contrary to what obtained before. ” This is what we have started in Sokoto to restore the lost glory of the traditional institutions in the state,” he added. IM NOT AGAINST IT BUT MY QUESTION IS WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM? http://www.weyab.com/2013/05/sokoto-increases-sultans-salary-others.html

Ngwakwe: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Judia and Samaria, Nazareth are all Jewish Cities in Ancient times.Nice I can remember the massacre, The Hebron. massacre refers to the killing of sixty-seven Jews(including 23 college students) on 24 August 1929 in Hebron, then part of Mandatory Palestine, by Arabs incited to violence by false rumours that Jews were massacring Arabs inJerusalem and seizing control of Muslim holy places. Many of the 435 Jews who survived were hidden by local Arab families. Soon after, all Hebron's Jews were evacuated by the British authorities. Many returned in 1931, but almost all left again during1936–1939. The massacre formed part of the1929 Palestine riots, in which a total of 133 Jews were killed by Arabs, and brought the centuries-old Jewish presence in Hebron to an end. It led to the re-organization and development of the Jewish paramilitary organization, the Haganah, which later became the nucleus of theIsrael Defense Forces. In the metanarrative of Zionism, according to Michelle Campos, the event became 'a central symbol of Jewish persecution at the hands of bloodthirsty Arabs.'and was "engraved in the national psyche of Israeli Jews", particularly those who settled in Hebron after 1967. Things can never move well in isreal because Palestinians are accusing them of enslaving them in Their own land and isrealite , the Jews are not even happy when remembering the past , the hatred from Arabs , each day they wish they wish they can destroy all Arabians, each day they remember the wickedness of Arabs toward Jews... But for me I think everyone should go his own way and forget the past....give the palestinine what they need...let gaza worth a country, merge many things if posible ....my fear is even UN, US, ARAB LEAGUE are even confuse |
Al-Nakba Series on the Palestinian 'catastrophe' of 1948 that led to dispossession and conflict that still endures. “The Nakba did not begin in 1948. Its origins lie over two centuries ago….” So begins this four-part series on the ‘nakba’, meaning the ‘catastrophe’, about the history of the Palestinian exodus that led to the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948 and the establishment of the state of Israel. This sweeping history starts back in 1799 with Napoleon’s attempted advance into Palestine to check British expansion and his appeal to the Jews of the world to reclaim their land in league with France. The narrative moves through the 19th century and into the 20th century with the British Mandate in Palestine and comes right up to date in the 21st century and the ongoing ‘nakba’ on the ground. Arab, Israeli and Western intellectuals, historians and eye-witnesses provide the central narrative which is accompanied by archive material and documents, many only recently released for the first time. For Palestinians, 1948 marks the 'Nakba' or the 'catastrophe', when hundreds of thousands were forced out of their homes. But for Israelis, the same year marks the creation of their own state. This series attempts to present an understanding of the events of the past that are still shaping the present. This story starts in 1799, outside the walls of Acre in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, when an army under Napoleon Bonaparte besieged the city. It was all part of a campaign to defeat the Ottomans and establish a French presence in the region. In search of allies, Napoleon issued a letter offering Palestine as a homeland to the Jews under French protection. He called on the Jews to ‘rise up’ against what he called their oppressors. Napoleon’s appeal was widely publicised. But he was ultimately defeated. In Acre today, the only memory of him is a statue atop a hill overlooking the city. Yet Napoleon’s project for a Jewish homeland in the region under a colonial protectorate did not die, 40 years later, the plan was revived but by the British. On 19 April 1936, the Palestinians launched a national strike to protest against mass Jewish immigration and what they saw as Britain’s alliance with the Zionist movement. The British responded with force. During the six months of the strike, over 190 Palestinians were killed and more than 800 wounded. Wary of popular revolt, Arab leaders advised the Palestinians to end the strike. Palestinian leaders bowed to pressure from the Arab heads of state and agreed to meet the British Royal Commission of Inquiry headed by Lord Peel. In its report of July 1937, the Peel Commission recommended the partition of Palestine. Its report drew the frontiers of a Jewish state in one-third of Palestine, and an Arab state in the remaining two-thirds, to be merged with Transjordan. A corridor of land from Jerusalem to Jaffa would remain under British mandate. The Commission also recommended transferring where necessary Palestinians from the lands allocated to the new Jewish state. The Commission’s proposals were widely published and provoked heated debate. As the Palestinian revolt continued, Britain’s response hardened. Between 1936 and 1937, the British killed over 1,000 Palestinians; 37 British military police and 69 Jews also died. hey! for everybody im not trying to bring issues about tribe but i have to say this..... the problem we are having in this country is north "hausa/fulani" when you talk about development. note : development never comes from government , its the basic thing in every RATIONAL being to develop its area and place of living...then goes to an extend in helping other"less privileged" develop their own area. the issue here is ,hausa/fulani make thing worst for this country, goto anambra, abia, imo , ebonyi, ph, name them, you will see many of them living in trash, living in hell, living like pigs while many of them have the money to put things in those area like ibo people do in everywhere they go. even in there own state 92% of them choose to live uncomfortable when they have the cash to put up good structures. goto abuja you see many of them wasting money on little girls while their houses are bamboo houses. how many structure do hausa/fulani put in south/south or south/east in other to increase development? how many do other people put in there place? note: whenever you are not living comfortable, you must be a disturbance, a disadvantages and a nuisance to the whole country. like me if its true, kiss my a*s if you wish me a slap
