Sports / Christian Pulisic Poses In Chelsea Shirt After Completing £58m Move by cheapgoals(m): 5:23pm On May 21, 2019
Christian Pulisic has been officially announced as a Chelsea player as he posed in Chelsea shirt at Stamford Bridge after a £58m move from Borussia Dortmund.

The American completed his move from Signal Iduna Park a week ago when the transfer window officially opened. A deal was actually struck in January but the 20-year-old stay-put with the Bundesliga club for the rest of the season.

He is presently part of Maurizio Sarri’s squad and was caught in the club’s kit for next season for the first time in a series of photos. Pulisic held the shirt high up in delight and pulled a few poses for the camera as he looked enchanted to finally be at Stamford Bridge.

Sports / AFCON 2019: Meet The 24 Finalist For Egypt 2019 by cheapgoals(m): 6:22pm On May 16, 2019
The CAF African Cup of Nations makes a return after a 2-year break, the tournament was initially scheduled to be hosted by Cameroon.

The West African nation would have hosted the competition for the first time since 1972. The Indomitable Lions were also the title holders after winning the previous edition.

On 30 November 2018, Cameroon was stripped of hosting the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations due to delays in the delivery of infrastructure, Boko Haram insurgency and the Anglophone Crisis. On 8 January 2019, Egypt were chosen by the CAF Executive Committee as the new host of the biennial football competition.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in June and July has been pushed back by a week to cater for the holy month of Ramadan, the tournament’s chief told AFP.

The four-week long event will now run from June 21-July 19 instead of June 15-July 13, said Mohamed Fadl, a former player who has been handed the task of supervising the continental showpiece by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA).

Also, the 2019 edition will be the first with 24 teams and will also the Video Assistant Referee (VAR ) introduced into AFCON, six venues, Cairo International Stadium and 30 June Stadium in Cairo, Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria, Suez Stadium in Suez, Ismailia Stadium in Ismailia and Al Salam Stadium in Cairo will host the games

This will be the fifth time Egypt will be hosts after 1959, 1974 1986 and 2006, hoping to be winners after coming second place to Cameroon who won the last edition in Gabon, Nigeria winners in 2013 will hope to return as winners after missing the last two editions.

Algeria will hope to make a statement, while Senegal with their array of stars led by Sadio Mane will look to break the jinx and win the ever elusive trophy, Zaha and Ivory Coast will seek to repeat the 2015 feat when they won it last. Ghana will want to revive their dwindling status as the powerhouse and Morocco will hope to post better performance than what they achieved in Russia last year.

Sports / Mikel Obi Will Lead & Inspire Super Eagle’s Young Guns – Gernot Rohr by cheapgoals(m): 6:03pm On May 16, 2019
Super Eagles and Middlesbrough midfielder John Obi Mikel‘s surprise recall to Nigeria’s provisional squad for Africa Cup of Nations will motivate an aspiring young side lacking experience, the head coach and ex-players stated on Thursday.

The Super Eagles were the youngest team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and they will considerably be younger at the Africa Cup in Egypt after experienced campaigners Victor Moses, Elderson Echiejile and Ogenyi Onazi were omitted.

The German tactician Gernot Rohr did not call up Mikel amid the 2019 Nations Cup qualifying series but the Nigerian officials insisted that the player is still the national team skipper albeit Ahmed Musa, took the role at his absence.

Sports / Top Funniest Football Club Names In Nigeria Leagues by cheapgoals(m): 8:05pm On May 12, 2019
Names in club football is as important as the Club itself as it stands as a means of identification and branding, a sense of belonging for fans. Generally, across the world, clubs are named after the city they are based or the owner, sometimes companies and in the new world of sponsorship deals and partnerships, clubs are now named by the companies they have dealt with.

The City of Manchester is more famous for its two rival clubs in the EPL, same for FC Barcelona and the rivals in the capital city of Madrid which houses Atletico and Real Madrid. Also, Red Bull, an energy drink manufacturing company has clubs in Germany (RB Leipzig), Austria (RB Salzburg), Brazil (RB Brasil) etc, to show how deep sponsorship deals have gone in club identification.

In Nigeria, the case is not different as clubs are majorly named after States and cities, due to the non-existence of sponsorship deals in the league, private clubs are majorly named after their proprietors or cities based and most recently clubs are getting owned by churches thus leading to clubs named after churches.

However, amidst some pretty cool names like some names that would make you stop and think again and sometimes spark a smile and once in a while, short laughter. The State finals of the Aiteo Cup held across the country brought up names which makes one wonder the level of creativity or the none existence of it while considering names of clubs.

Here we take a look at some of the funniest names we found in the state FA cup and the local leagues.

Box to Box FC

Location: Lagos
Level: Non-league

Yes, you saw that right, Box to Box FC, understandable that the FA permits club owners to use any names they prefer without any laid down guidelines or rules but this sounds like a name coined out of disinterest to think deep in creating a name for a football club.

“Basically football is played from your box to the opponent’s box in search of a goal, it’s a box to box game“- this is me trying to imagine the explanation whoever coined the name will try to give if probed. Or maybe he was staring at a pack of boxes while thinking of a name- who knows?! *Shrugs*

More interestingly, they literally and practically “boxed” MFM FC in the Lagos State FA Cup final clinching the title with a 2-1 victory. I don’t know which is more interesting, the nature of their victory or the nature of their name!

Qutar Waters

Location: Borno State
Level: Non-league

Now this name sounds like a country or more logical, the name of a River in Borno (I wonder if there is any at all) then the only other meaningful explanation I could give to this after serious research is that maybe it’s actually a “pure-–” sorry, Sachet water company that owns and runs the club.

Other than that, I wonder what else it could mean, maybe a trip to Borno will shed more light on this name, however as i have a busy schedule the trip will be postponed until “further” notice.

Confine FC

Location: Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom
Level: Nationwide League One

Seriously? Confine FC? Ok good, according to an online dictionary “Confine” means “To restrict; to keep within bounds; to shut or keep in a limited space or area”.

This Got me wondering if the person who named the Club was “Grounded” or in a police cell while naming the club. Ikot FC would have been better, isn’t it? Whose with me?

Rarara FC

Location: Katsina
Level: Nigeria National League

Rarara what? Okay “Rarara” in Yoruba is roughly translated to “No No No“, used to show refusal of a suggestion, of all the names on the list, this seems to be the least creative of all, I mean the owner basically repeated two letters twice, he could as well have repeated the letters 7 times.

I guess it’s beyond my understanding the logic behind picking this as a club name. I wonder what Rarara means in Hausa or Igbo. A similar name is Malumfashi FC but the fact that it is named after a local government in Katsina state saves it from further backlash but then for the sake of broadcasters who may bite their tongues while attempting a pronunciation, they should have done better with the naming.

Go Round FC

Location: Omoku (River)
Level: NPFL

You never thought NPFL club sides would have their tables shaken, did you? But anyone ever wondered what made a certain club owner name his team “Go Round“, I wonder what he means by the statement “Go Round”, who he is directing to move in circles and what he should go round?

Oops my bad, actually forgotten that “Go Round” is now a noun.

God Deliver Me Bible Church FC

Location: Ogun
Level: Non-League

This is a club side that could turn a sports show to a religious program without fuss. In as much as the team is owned by a church, there are better options which would still show a hint of the religious owner. This sounds more like a prayer point than a name.

At least there are alternative short religious names that can be used, e.g “Saints FC“, remember Welsh league Champions The New Saints“(TNS), however, God Deliver Me when abbreviated is still as awkward as ever and not as awesome as (TNS), pronounce GDMBC interesting isn’t it?

It’s not limited to Nigeria Dundee United sounds like a team of retards in Nigeria. “Always Ready FC” in Bolivia; Every team should always be ready to play football so it is therefore sensible to have it as your team name as well as a mantra.

In Zimbabwe there is a club named Triangle FC as well as Chicken Inn; Unsurprisingly, this club is named after its sponsor, a fast food chain. But money buys success, and the club became national champions in 2015

Naughty Boys; I really don’t know how the naming process works for Botswanan football teams but I imagine for this team it went something on the lines of, “you are a boisterous lot, therefore you will be called naughty boys”?

Hafnarfjordur FC is a club you would not want to call without the fear of biting your tongue.

Any other funny named football club, home or abroad that you know, please drop it in the comments section. Let's have fun..

Sports / France 2019: Profiling Super Falcons World Cup Opponents by cheapgoals(m): 8:36pm On May 05, 2019
As we draw ever close to the start of the FIFA Women’s World cup slated for France from the 7th of June to the 7th of July, 24 teams will vie to be the best of them all. Africa’s number one female team, Nigeria‘s Super Falcons will be Africa’s flag bearer alongside the Banyana Banyana of South Africa and Cameroon.

The Super Falcons have been ever-present since the inception of the FIFA women’s world and this year’s edition will make it the 8th time the team will participate in the competition alongside big names like Brazil, Germany, Sweden etc all who have been featured in all edition of the competition.

In this write up we take a look at the group stage opponents drawn against Nigeria ahead of the opening game in June. Nigeria are drawn against hosts France Norway and South Korea.

France

Nickname: Les Blues

Appearance: 4th

Last Appearance: 2015

Best Performance: 4th 2011

Coach: Corinne Diacre

Star: Eugene le Sommer (Lyon)

The hosts are one of the top female football sides in the world but only rose to that level recently, the Blues failed to qualify for the initial three FIFA women’s World Cup edition before their debut at USA 2003 only to fail to qualify for the China 2007 edition but have been ever-present since then.

Continentally, the French are yet to grace the last four of the Euros women’s championship despite featuring 6 times. Being the hosts this time around, coupled with their recent exploits at the youth levels a lot is expected from them.

The last time Nigeria played France in the French country it ended in an 8-0 thrashing, thus Thomas Dennerby and his team have a lot to do if they are to be a pose any threat to the hosts.

Norway

Nickname: The Grasshoppers

Appearance: 8th

Last Appearance: 2015

Best Performance: Winners 1995

Coach: Martin Sjögren

Star: Ada Hegerberg (Olympique Lyon)

Norway are one of the most successful female national teams in the world, The Grasshoppers as they are fondly called, are former European champions winning the women’s Euros twice in 1987 and 1993, World champions in 1995 as well as Olympics Gold medalists at Sydney 2000 and Bronze medalists at Atlanta 1996.

However, since the turn of the century, the European country have dropped in quality and have struggled to live up to previous billings, finishing the last world cup in Canada 2015 in R16, the 2017 Euros at the group stages while also failing to qualify for the last two summer Olympic games.

Nonetheless, with various players playing at top female club sides across the world, including 2018 Balon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg, the Scandinavians have more than enough to trouble Onomi Ebi and her defence line.

South Korea

Nickname: Taegeuk Ladies

Appearance: 3rd

Last Appearance: 2015

Best Performance: R1 2015

Coach: Yoon Deok-yeo

Star: Ji So yon (Chelsea)

Just like the French, the South Koreans do not have an illustrious pedigree or history, the closest they have ever gone towards winning a silverware is a third-place finish at the Asian Championship in Thailand 2003.

The team has a majority of its players in the K-league with Chelsea’s Ji son Yon holding the country’s goalscoring record with 53 goals in 113 appearances.

The Asians are the most likely team which the Super Falcons can scrape off three points from but it is not as easy as it sounds.

First, if this is a list of privately owned clubsides in Nigeria it's not complete by whatever criteria the listing is done. OP, you need to up your game. (Papilo FC, champions of Imo State FA cup on a number of occasions is missing, so also is Giwa FC, Champion of Plateau state FA cup on numerous occasions. There's also Ranchers Bees of Karina and so many others)

Then, if it's a ranking and not a listing, OP, you need to up your game too. How come Remo stars is in number one position? I believe Ifeanyi Uba FC deserves the number one position by a mile. Even ahead of Stationary Stores for the simple fact that they have their own stadium.

In conclusion, OP, up your game.

Thank you.

Thanks for your feedback.. It's just a list not a ranking. Lot of private owned clubs here and there, can't cover every one of them.

On papilo FC , papilo is now defunct .. Giwa FC has been banned

Club ownership in Nigeria has been fingered as one of the major reasons why league football in the country is in its current state. It is believed that the current government ownership of the majority of the clubs has hugely hampered on the development and professionalism in the running of the affairs of the clubs.

In times past many private individuals were involved in the ownership of club sides in Nigeria, from Abiola Babes owned by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, Stationery Stores amongst others.

However, due to the high cost of running a football club and the death of some club proprietors, the number of privately owned clubs in the country dwindled as the government took over some while others were disbanded outrightly.

Recently, there has been a rise in the private ownership of club sides and today we take a look at the best of them across the local leagues

Burundi

Appearance: Debut

Last Appearance: None

Best Performance: None

Nickname: The Swallows

Players To Watch Out For: Saido Berahino(Stoke City), Gael Bigirimana (Hibernian) & F. Abdul Razak (JS Kabylie)

Coach:

One of the three debutants in the expanded format, Burundi can be classified as minnows on the African football scene but they have recently shown that perhaps there is a steady of football in the country.

In 2014, The Swallows qualified for the CHAN, while their U20 male team made it to the group stages of that CAF U20 tournament earlier this year, in 2018 their female counterparts failed at the final stage to qualify for the FIFA women’s U20 World cup in France losing to Ghana in the last qualifying round.

Burundi made it out of a group that had Gabon, South Sudan and Mali with 2 wins and 4 draws also qualifying unbeaten, although they placed second Mali who finished atop the group.

Although many may not know of the team’s strength and weaknesses, they, however, possess their own fair share of quality players who can get the win if the big teams do not come to the party.

Players like former England youth international and Stoke City’s Saido Berahino, Fiston Abdul Razak who has 17 goals in 35 National team caps as well as young defender Christoph Nduwarugira can pop up with crucial goals. However, with Madagascar also in the group, it is hard to see Burundi qualify for R16 even as one of the best third-placed teams.

Guinea

Appearance: 12th

Last Appearance: 2015

Best Performance: 1975 Runner-up

Nickname: Syli Nationale

Players To Watch Out For: Ibrahima cissé (Fulham), Naby Keita(Liverpool) & Amadou Diawara (Napoli)

Coach: Paul Put

The West African country is making its 12th appearance at the AFCON having last appeared in 2015. Apart from the 2nd place finish back in 1975, The Syli Nationals have appeared in the quarterfinals four times 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2015.

For the 2019 AFCON, the team qualified from a group which had Central African Republic, Ivory Coast and Rwanda picking 12 points from possible 18. Failing to lose any of their 6 qualifying games to book the top spot in their group.

On paper, they look like the only team who should give Nigeria problems and probably qualify alongside the favourites in the group. Head to Head the Guineas have played Nigeria 17 time across all levels and have both shared 5 wins each with 7 draws.

It’s a statistics that shows that Nigeria has never had it rosy against The National Elephants and the last time both teams met in 2011, they ensured that Nigeria missed out on the 2012 AFCON with a 2-2 draw in Abuja

With Liverpool’s Naby Keita, expected to lead the team, they are not of the quality to upset the Nigerians

Paul Pogba should leave Manchester United if he feels too big or no longer wants to play for the club, says former Red Devils midfielder Jesper Olsen.

The France international has been linked with a move to Real Madrid toward the end of the season and the diminutive midfielder said Los Blancos are “a dream club for every player“.
