Business / Re: Cost Of Living In Lagos, Nigeria by Cheef: 2:23pm On May 08, 2010
@aasog,
Good Post! Couldn't agree more.

@MsTom,
I do not think this is about opportunities; you need to know what we recruiters go through. We have a seriously flawed educational system,

@Poster,

Best of Luck!

Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 3:35pm On Dec 12, 2009
Fhemmmy:

With somethng of that low mileage, you might be looking at $30,000 landing cost at your door step.
If you willing to settle for something under 10,000 Miles, like 5000 Miles, you might be able to get something as low as $25,000
That will include buying, shipping and clearing and delivered at your house.

Having consulted wide, methinks I want to take your offer further, lemme have your email so we can discuss offline!
Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 6:01am On Dec 12, 2009
George_D:

fhemmmy, you're tempting cheeef now as i can see. wink
Fhemmmy is trying hard, I have actually been reconsidering again based on his post, can u imagine! I even met someone who has the exact same Rav4 who is so happy with his choice, he looks for any opportunity to go out! He got it low mileage also (~6700miles), a/c chills to the alpines and fuel is F. E. Cient! The car even had a 3rd row of seats.

@megastu,
Yours is not the 1st caveat on Kia and Hyundai. All it does is make me more undecided. undecided
Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 12:52am On Dec 11, 2009
George_D:

@cheef, i doubt if the import duty on new cars will make it worthwhile
except you're a dealer doing volume imports like, dana motors, etc.

ok. sounds complicated. Are there dealers that import 'new' direct from the states and how do their prices compare with the brands in 9ja that are mostly made in/for the Asian or Indian markets?

Fhemmmy:

Yes you can import the new car from the USA and you can treat it like you are importing the fairly used.
You pay the duty by the year of the ride and you could talk to adexfem about that.
Lemme know what kinda ride you leaning towards and we can give u idea of the price.

For analyses, say I want a 2009 RaV4, acquire some mileage (below 1000miles) and ship it in as used. What would be the duty payable/cost to land?
Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 4:40pm On Dec 09, 2009
By the way,

Does anyone have experience with importation of new cars from the states? Given that US specs are way better than what we are offered here in 9ja, I wonder if the import duties, etc still make it worthwhile.

I guess that influenced my initial considerations for a used SUV (american spec),

Can anyone advice?
Autos / Re: Brand New Cars At Great Prices by Cheef: 4:27pm On Dec 09, 2009
@ Brand New

How come your prices quoted as at yesterday are higher than those advertised for seasonal offer in the dailies?
Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 4:10pm On Dec 09, 2009
@Fhemmy,

Your mouth sweet sha! My mind is made up for CHASSIS anyways,

In other words, if money wasn't an issue, we'd all buy brand new cars and perhaps this forum would not even exist! And you are right about the woman thing, if the choice was up to them only (even though they know less about cars than the average guy), anyone with 1m naira and above should just go for a new ride, even if its a picanto. sad

@sultaan,

Fear of armed robbers? God forbid that they would prevent us from LIVING! Anyway, its been God all along and ofcourse, wisdom to know how to keep it simple yet maintaining the quality we desire.
Career / Re: Workers - What's Your Plan B After Retirement? by Cheef: 10:33pm On Dec 08, 2009
True. There's life after retirement but i dont think that everyone is cut out to be an enterpreneur. Its not easy to own and run a successful biz esp in 9ja and attempting that can be for some pple like throwing money into a moribund stock market!

For some pple, plan B could be growing that 100k income of yours and investing in safe areas. Like tkb417 said "the koko is to save up and start turning the money around". I once read a great book called "Ordinary pple, Extraordinary Wealth" by Ric Edelman, and its amazing how we can keep life simple and still achieve our financial goals post retirement.
Autos / Re: Honda City Or Toyota Yaris by Cheef: 9:19pm On Dec 08, 2009
Entry level car at 3.2m? shocked I think its waaaaayyyy overpriced! Good luck with your decision though!
Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 7:26pm On Dec 07, 2009
George D,

I am feeling you. Have used a new honda city for the past 3+ yrs and have no idea whats under the hood, its a good feeling. Its likely that with a used car, I would have had some mechanic touch something. New is always better but we all cannot afford what we truly want hence the compromise for these imports.

I guess I am leaning towards the TUCSON now. I just checked out the 2010 model and think it might be worth the few months wait. Check it out,

Car Talk / Re: Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 10:43am On Dec 07, 2009
Thanks guys for the inputs.

@Arizona1,
I'm still dealing with the decision, once that is clear i'll consider your options. Thanks.

@Kunle-A,

Since its not a first (or only) car, there is some additional satisfation to be derived, beyond cost and functionality. 2002 model of any car is off. If is used my preference would be not older than 2006.

I am thinking Toyota Corolla or Kia Sportage (brand new) versus CRV, Rav4, Exterra or Highlander (2007/08 model - Super clean - Used)?

My desire is for a 5 year stress free vehicle,
Autos / Re: Honda City Or Toyota Yaris by Cheef: 8:45pm On Dec 06, 2009
I know dis, the Yaris is more economical with fuel. Not sure the prices but think they are abt 2.4m - 2.5m, the yaris being abt 100k more expensive. Good luck!
Car Talk / Suv Or Saloon Car? Brand New Or Used? by Cheef: 8:22pm On Dec 06, 2009
Hi!

I am struggling with the choice of which car to buy.

Budget = 3.8m,

Reality: Bad, bumpy roads, traffic and frequent fuel scarcity

Dilemma: New car or fairly used SUV?

Required: Advice? Please share, I am sure it will help more people than you think <I know pple on this forum know a good deal abt cars?>.

Gracias!
Autos / Re: Which Car Has The Best Interior by Cheef: 6:46pm On Jul 25, 2009
honda does pretty well with aesthetics on their high end vehicles but the pure luxury brands are by far the best - Benz, lexus, infinity, BM, etc

Autos / Share Your Experience With The 2008 Toyota Corolla by Cheef: 9:00pm On Jun 01, 2009

Hrd a lot about design faults on the 2008 Corolla and was wondering if anyone could share their experience. I'm thinking of picking one up but don't want to make a mistake,
Car Talk / Re: Help! 2009 Honda City / Hyundai Elantra / Kia Cerato / Toyota Yaris by Cheef: 8:45pm On Jun 01, 2009
Tough one, seeing they are all good cars for this entry level range, particularly for the 2009 model. I'd say, one's choice should really depend on a whole range of factors other than just cost i.e. how long do you plan on owning? Will it be an only car? Will you be piling up mileage on a day to day, or just short distances only - like work and back home, etc

My opinion,
For a lady, an Elantra 2009 is cute, 2009 Cerato is even cuter, City/Yaris, overrated, no biggie, although the Yaris is better than the City with Fuel efficiency. Final verdict - Cerato 2009!
