PoliticsOf All Institutions In Nigeria Police Has Least Corrupt Officers – IGP - by cherylrobinson(op): 5:34am On Jun 08, 2015
By Johnbosco Agbakwuru
ABUJA—The Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase has declared that the Nigerian Police, has the least corrupt officers of all the institutions in the country, even as the Police is determined to follow up any corrupt cases before it in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Speaking at the annual symposium during a Feast of Barracuda organised by the National Association of Seadogs, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase noted that the Police had made frantic efforts in tackling corruption even among the officers and had set in motion machinery to fish out corrupt officers in the force.
The IGP, who was represented by the Commissioner of Police, Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Wilson Inalegwu said that the practical step to deal with corruption was to dismantle road blocks by Police and the establishment of Monitoring Teams to ensure compliance across the country.
He said: “The IG said he is allergic to corruption and since then he has taken practical steps to deal with the issue of corruption, both the history of corruption and perception of corruption of the Nigeria Police Force.
“One of the first things he did was to set up the IGP’s Monitoring Teams. First of all the decision by the Police Management Team was to take out roadblocks across all our highways. It was not just to dismantle it, he set up the IGP Monitoring Team to ensure that these directives are enforced.”
“If you go across most of our highways now roadblocks have been reduced to the barest minimum, and anybody mounting roadblocks, does that at his risk.
“Presentations are also made where Commissioners of Police are invited to look at the situations across the country right from the condition of suspects in Police cells and they have a technical platform that enable them to monitor the behaviour and conduct of police officers on the road as they handle suspects.

PoliticsI’ll Forever Remain Loyal To Jonathan –wike by cherylrobinson(op): 3:22am On Jun 02, 2015
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he would ever remain loyal to former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Speaking yesterday at his post-inauguration church thanksgiving held at the Salvation Ministries, Port Harcourt, the governor said he had no regret working with the immediate-past president, adding that Nigerians would, in future, appreciate Jonathan for his sacrifice for the nation.
He said: “I have no regret working with Jonathan. You must be loyal to the person you work with. Jonathan is a good man.”
Governor Wike said he would swear in the acting State Chief Judge, Justice Daisy Okocha, and the acting President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Christy Gabriel-Nwankwo, today.
Also, he stated that courts in the state and the House of Assembly would be opened today, to make the state functional again.
Wike, while dedicating his victory at the 2015 gubernatorial election to God, said he left former Governor Chibuike Amaechi, because of, “irreconcilable differences.”
“For record purpose, God uses people to help people. In this state, we cannot say we do not know the happenings. For the past two to three years, I left, when there were irreconcilable differences,” he said.
Earlier in his homily, the General Overseer of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, advised the governor to select technocrats, as cabinet members to enable them offer their wealth of experience to develop the state.
He also urged Wike to focus on developing the state and the citizens, cautioning him against the consequences of amassing wealth at the detriment of the people.
The cleric expressed optimism that, the thanksgiving would bring development to the state and advised the governor to beware of sycophants.

PoliticsIf You Love Me, Respect My Words - Fayose To Hausas by cherylrobinson(op): 6:52am On May 22, 2015
He said: “You said you love me, this is the time you have to show this love. I want to plead with you to submit whatever lethal weapons you have in your possession to the police. And if you refuse to do this, whether you are Yoruba or Hausa, the police will arrest you.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us and for the sake of our country, I plead with you to allow peace to reign.”

Fayose said that the crimes in the city would be investigated and those found guilty would not escape the tough hands of the law.

The Chairman of Hausa community in Ekiti State, Alhaji Adamu Imam asked the governor for financial aide for those whose property were damaged during the crisis.

Imam noted that the names of the thugs who attacked them will soon be made available for the governor and security agencies for necessary actions.

The police has come out and denied anyone died during the violence, they noted that only two persons sustained pellet wounds while 22 others sustained various degrees of injuries.

The Hausa community in Sabo, Ado-Ekiti was allegedly attacked by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), who were allegedly under Fayose’s directions.

PoliticsWith Buhari, Hard Work ‘ll Now Pay — Veteran Broadcaster, Cally Ikpe by cherylrobinson(op): 5:33am On May 20, 2015
VETERAN broadcaster and founder of Civil Empowerment and Rule of Law Support Initiative, Mr. Cally Ikpe in this interview says that despite the myriad of challenges awaiting the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, the incoming administration would be a people’s government. He also explained why he championed a suit challenging those against the usage of Smart Card Readers.

You were behind the law suit challenging calls for the non usage of the Smart Card Readers during the last general election, can we know what informed that and other forms of support displayed by the All Progressives Congress, APC?

I got attracted by the rare anti-corruption posture of General Muhammadu Buhari. He is someone I see as a sure antidote to the impunity that has characterized Nigeria for too long. All his previous attempts at clinching the presidency had me and my entire family supporting completely. Really, who else has the will to confront corruption like him? Like he said, “if we don’t kill corruption, then corruption will kill Nigeria”.

Some mischievous elements had gone to court to challenge INEC’s decision to use the card reader for the general elections.

Particularly, a suit was filed by the United Democratic Party alleging that the use of the card reader amounted to electronic voting which ran contrary to our electoral laws as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.

We simply asked to be joined in the suit. Yes, I am part of an NGO; Civil Empowerment and Rule of Law Support Initiative. I personally swore to an affidavit that the card reader was in no way tantamount to electronic voting; but rather that the biometric system only served to prevent double registration. I was personally irked by the obvious mischief intended.

But the card readers were generally reported to have malfunctioned and is the basis of several petitions at the election tribunal.

It was apparent that this was a case of the hand of Jacob and the voice of Esau. Seeing that the elections didn’t seem to favour the ruling party, its people became restless and at all cost wanted to frustrate the elections from holding or in the alternative, opening it up to the usual manipulation which the card reader served to check.

It was also a situation of preparing grounds for the elections to be nullified once the courts rule that card readers amounted to electronic voting.

The case was adjourned to a later date and as we speak it is still pending. I suspect they have developed cold feet. The usage of the card reader has come to stay.

It would better the electoral process as was seen during the election. Things will keep getting better on that, after all, some of the challenges encountered in its usage were attributed to human error.

So, how do you feel now and what are your expectations?

Impunity will be halted. Subsidy fraud will cease. We were going to get to a point where more than half of our total budget will only cater to the welfare of the executive and the legislators while the rest of the citizenry struggle to stay alive.

In the new dispensation, I hope people will not collect money for contracts they have no intention of executing any more. I am sure it hurts you too, that NEPA makes you pay for power they don’t supply.

It takes only a heartless leadership to look the other way while people are exploited in that inhumane manner.

PoliticsMoves To Oust Fayose Before May 29 Thickens by cherylrobinson(op): 5:37am On May 17, 2015
There are renewed moves to oust Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayo Fayose, before May 29, THISDAY was reliably informed.

The governor who has had a running battle with 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in Ekiti State House of Assembly since he assumed office on October 16, 2014, has been in court to stop moves by them to oust him.

While a federal high court sitting in Abuja had twice in April declined to grant an application seeking to stop the lawmakers from impeaching the governor, another high court in Lagos on May 6, struck out a suit filed by the lawmakers on the impeachment following their decision to withdraw the suit.

While the suit looked like a relief to Fayose, it might be a booby trap for him as persons who understood the game currently playing up at the background, said it was actually meant to clear the coast for his impeachment as the continuous existence of the case in court could stall the impeachment plot. The 19 lawmakers had reportedly signed an impeachment notice against Fayose and consequently asked the Chief Judge of Ekiti State to constitute a panel of inquiry to investigate the allegations of misconduct against him.

The chief judge has not set up the panel probably because the matter has been sub-judice and moreso that the plotters did not pass the resolution in an authorised place.

However, a reliable source told THISDAY that Speaker of the House, Dr. Adewale Omirin, who along with his 18 colleagues had been denied access to the House of Assembly by security forces with the intention to foil the impeachment plot was said to have held a meeting with a senator from Ekiti State in the National Assembly recently over the plot to oust Fayose.

According to the source, a former minister from Ekiti State who is close to a former president sent the senator to the former president to discuss the impeachment move with him. He disclosed further that after meeting with the former president, the latter asked him to send the 19 APC lawmakers to him.
At the scheduled meeting with the lawmakers by the former president, a top security agent was invited with the intention to co-opt him into the plan with the overall intention to seek his assistance to dislodge the security agents who barricade the road leading to the House of Assembly so that the lawmakers can gain access to the assembly chamber.

The top security agent was said to have told the meeting that he was not responsible for the deployment of security forces to the surroundings of Ekiti State House of Assembly.

The source also said the security big-wig was then asked how he would dislodge the security agents and simultaneously pave way for the return of the aggrieved lawmakers.

He was said to have pledged commitment to the cause but only requested that the impeachment move be reserved towards the end of the tenure of current political office holders.

The top security source was said to have said it would be easier to get it done when it would be few days to May 29 as it was said to have been concluded that a panel of enquiry that would be constituted could finish its assignment within two days.

Once the panel concludes its work and recommends Fayose’s impeachment, THISDAY was told, he would be gone in a matter of hours as the lawmakers who would be adequately protected, would immediately pronounce him impeached.

It was also learnt that another top security agent from another security outfit who could make the job easier was said to have also been contacted and co-opted into the arrangement after willingly pledging his loyalty to the cause.
Hear the source: “A former minister from Ekiti State sent a senator to a former president. When he met him, the former president asked the 19 lawmakers to see him and they went. A top security personnel was invited to the meeting and they asked him what his men were doing at the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

“He told them he just saw it that way that he didn’t deploy them. They also contacted another top security personnel and both of them have keyed into the project. The first personnel told them to reserve the move till the last week of this tenure since it was realised that within two days after constituting the investigative panel, they would finish the work and recommend him for impeachment. I can tell you that he will be removed before May 29,” the source said.

The forces which seek to get rid of Fayose consider him a liability to the state that will be too risky to endure for four years. His ordeal began shortly after his election on June 21, 2014, when he was dragged to court over alleged ineligibility to stand for the election having been impeached in October 2006 during his first coming.

Fearing that he might be disqualified from taking oath of office, his supporters stormed the court and allegedly beat up the judge, resulting in the closure of Ekiti courts for two weeks.

His image crisis worsened when he assumed office and sponsored the defection of seven APC lawmakers who subsequently impeached the speaker, Omirin, who is leading a group of 19 including himself.

Since then, the 19 lawmakers have had to take cover outside Ekiti State over fears of insecurity. The situation grew worse when the lawmakers who were candidates for April 28, 2015 House of Assembly elections could not campaign for their re-elections. This gave the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) the opportunity to clear 25 of 26 seats in the House of Assembly.
