GamingROAD TO GRANDMASTER - By Akinov !! by chessguru(op):
Hi guys, i am the Chessguru but i am yet to dominate the chess scene in Nigeria, in fact most of the Elite players have serious doubts about my ability to perform well in the masters Category , Chess my Official FIDE profile (http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=8504458).... This thread will document an ATTEMPT FOR ME TO BECOMING A GRANDMASTER Of Chess . To become a GRANDMASTER Of Chess the first thing is to work towards Chess mastery... become Grand master strength. of course it is a very difficult task but the most direct way is to win (OUT RIGHTLY) The African individual chess championship ) which is a route i am aiming at. but a chess player aiming for the African Chess champion title must first of all clear all doubts at home before stepping out to the very Wild African Tarrain.... so Ladies and Gentlemen , my first target is to conquer Nigeria !! .... this thread shall document the steps taking towards chess mastery !

FIRST MISSION !!
Target - 38th Edition of Nigerian Breweries Plc International Chess Championship (Lagos) (National championship) 14th-18th October
3rd Lagos Chess Classic 21st -25th.(Lagos) October

Aim - To train with a special Training regimen and put in my BEST into playing at the two major international chess events in Lagos
*(April- may) Systematic training, Drills and study average of 4 hours /day (optimum delivery)
**(June - July) Systematic Training Continues (but with more Practice time)
** (August -September) # DRILLS, STUDY & TRAINING AIMED SPECIFICALLY @ THE TOURNAMENTS

****This system may not be fool proof but it is better an attempt is made than for one to have no plans at all........... i am under no pressure to deliver- my target is simple * Be at your best- hit your peak and see how you play against Nigeria's bests !! lets go there

You welcome Joy.

@joshphorlarb

Can you let us know the value MG lasker assigned to a king, or you may provide us with a link as a proof.

A king is assigned ∞ as value, because it is a priceless piece, period.
The King usually is not given a value because it can not be exchanged with another piece on board. The value of a chess piece also depends on the position on board, the basic value as reflected above is from a starting position and from a general rule perspective.... as the game progresses and one' knowledge of the game expands one will realize that in certain positions the Knight could be more valuable than a Rook or Bishop depending on the usefulness in the position. The Value assigned to a king by any Grand master Dead or alive could only be academic and might be based on what the king is contributing to the battle in a given position that is an activated king who is no longer in hiding.

Tromsø 2014 starts with lavish opening ceremony
The 41st Chess Olympiad is officially open! Norway's Finance Minister Siv Jensen introduced the start of the games with a wink to national pride: "With Magnus Carlsen world chess champion it is only fitting that the Chess Olympiad is held in Norway and Tromsø." The opening ceremony was the first time that most of the chess players, coaches and officials taking part in the 2014 Olympiad had gathered together in the same venue, with a huge range of people from all around the world making the short trip to the event in Tromsø's Skarphallen. Here are just some of those who attended the ceremony:

TEAM NIGERIA/ NIGERIAN CHESS TEAM AT THE 41st WORLD CHESS OLYMPIADS arriving Norway !

ROUND ONE
NIGERIA Vs GEORGIA (Male)
NIGERIA Vs Mexico (Female)

The male players are facing a far higher rated team on paper and the Georgian team boasts of five Grand masters (all five players are GMs!!) i pray our men will be a ble to pull one upset two or perhaps 3 but the mission to win the match is a very difficult one.
The ladies are far better than what their rating says so we expect them to do well against the favored Mexican opposition.
For FULL team composition check http://www.akinov.com/2014/08/chess-olympiads-round-one-pairings-for.html

SportsRe: Official World CHESS Olympiads Thread (2014) World 4th Largest Sporting Event by chessguru(op):

The Chess Olympiad is the biggest chess event that exists, and is held every two years. It is the fourth largest sporting event in the world. It is open to all member federations of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), who can enter teams with four players, one reserve player, and a team captain.
The regulations state that the teams are paired against each other according to the Swiss pairing system, where the first tiebreak is match score. The time control will be 90 minutes for 40 moves and 30 minutes until the end of the game, with 30 seconds additional time per move, starting from move 1 -- per player. Draws under 30 moves are not allowed.

The open section of the tournament will be contested by a record number of 178 teams representing 174 nations. Norway, as host nation, will field two teams, whilst the International Braille Chess Association (IBCA), the International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA), and the International Committee of Silent Chess (ICSC) each will provide one team.

Players that will participate at the Olympiad include the reigning World Champion and highest rated player in the world Magnus Carlsen, nine of the top ten players from the FIDE rating list published in July 2014, and four former World Champions. Former World Champion and challenger in the World Chess Championship 2014 Vishwanathan Anand is the only player from the top ten who will miss the Olympiad. The highest rated female chess player Judith Polgar will represent Hungary in the open section. However, not all the teams submitted their strongest line-ups for the Olympiad. China, who were expected to be one of the strongest teams in the tournament, will be represented by only two players rated above 2700. Russia are the strongest team in the open section with average rating of 2777 points, followed by Ukraine with 2722 and France led by Maxime Vachier-Lagrave with 2718 rating points. Other teams with average rating higher than 2700 rating points are Armenia with the World no. 2 Levon Aronian playing on the top board, the United States of America, and Hungary.[22]
