The Metropolitan Catholic Archbishop of Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, has stated his position on the face-off between Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka and the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

Kaigama reminded the Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry in Enugu of the Canon Law 285.

The law prohibits the clergy from engaging in anything that is strange and unbecoming to the Catholic clerical state.

Kaigama spoke to the media on Friday at a conference on the 2021 World Communications Day celebration.

The bishop said Mbaka, being a catholic priest took an oath during his ordination which reads: ‘I promise obedience and respect to you my local ordinary and your successors’.
Kaigama noted that the oath Mbaka publicly took, like other priests, remains valid till he dies.

The bishop insisted Mbaka must abide by what the Catholic church teaches and stands for.

Citing the Canon Law 285, Kaigama said priests are “prohibited from embarking on anything alien to our clerical status and what the Catholic church teaches us, we are not allowed to dabble into politics.

“It doesn’t mean we can’t be prophetic in condemning criminality and corruption, we can do that, that is a prophetic mission.

“Partisan politics is not part of our calling. If a clergy embarks on such unbecoming and foreign conduct, the church has a solution and the church knows what to do.”

Local government administration got a landmark victory on Friday after the Supreme Court, in two separate judgments, declared that state governors have no power whatsoever to sack democratically elected local government chairmen and councillors.

The apex court said the 2015 dissolution of the 34 LGs in Katsina State by Governor Aminu Masari and the 2019 sack of the chairmen and councillors of the 33 LGs and 35 Local Council Development Areas in Oyo State by Governor Seyi Makinde were in breach of Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution.
The five-man panel was unanimous in the judgments.

Youth and Sports Development Minister, Sunday Dare, and the Chairman Senate Committee on Local Content, Chief Teslim Folarin, hailed the court for the verdicts.

The Supreme Court held that Masari and Makinde acted illegally and unconstitutionally by removing democratically elected Local Government Councils.

The two judgments were on the appeals filed by sacked LG chairmen and councillors from both states.

The LG chairmen and councillors from the 34 LGs in Katsina, led by Abubakar Ibrahim Yantaba, were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but were sacked in 2015 by Masari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Those from the 33 local government areas (LGAs) and 35 local council development areas (LCDAs) in Oyo State, led by Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, were elected under the banner of the APC but were sacked in 2019 by Makinde of the PDP.

2020 was the biggest year on record for LGBTQ candidates in the U.S., with 782 appearing on the ballot this year and 334 winning their elections, according to the Victory Fund.

“In one of the most vitriolic and unprecedented election cycles of our time, LGBTQ candidates continue winning elections in numbers and in parts of the country thought unthinkable a decade or two ago,” said Victory Fund President Annise Parker.



This means that 42.7% of LGBTQ candidates won their elections in November.

The candidates came from all over the country – there were LGBTQ candidates this year in every state except for Alabama – at all levels of government and showed a high level of diversity: 35.7% of the LGBTQ candidates this year were people of color.

This year’s Congress will be the most queer it has ever been, with 11 representatives and senators identifying as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, up from 10 in 2018. Two representatives-elect from New York are also the first Black, gay people elected to Congress this year.

According to the Victory Fund, there were 20 transgender or non-binary candidates who won their elections this year. One of them was Delaware Senator-elect Sarah McBride, the highest ranking transgender elected official in the country.

When it comes to gender, there was also diversity among the winning candidates: 41.3% were women, 53.6% were men, and 3.0% were gender non-conforming or non-binary.

There’s only one area where the winning LGBTQ candidates did not reflect the U.S. in general: party affiliation. Of the 255 winners who ran with a major party, 248 (or 97.2%) were Democrats and only seven (or 2.7%) were Republicans. Three candidates ran with third parties, and the rest were independent or unaffiliated.

“LGBTQ people span every community – we are people of color, women, immigrants, and people with disabilities – and we are able to use that life experience to connect with voters from many backgrounds,” said Parker. “This beautiful diversity provides an opportunity to connect on some level with every single voter in America. That is the reason LGBTQ candidates are winning in unprecedented numbers, and this will only accelerate in the years ahead.”

With so many LGBTQ rights under attack over the past four years, it is important to pause for a moment to remember the wins.

While 2020 certainly may not feel like a year of wins, the LGBTQ community did in fact experience some victories worth celebrating:

1)The Supreme Court said anti-LGBTQ employment discrimination is illegal

In June, LGBTQ people rejoiced over the Supreme Court’s landmark decision that employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity is illegal.

This means it is illegal in the entire country to fire someone for being LGBTQ.

The decision was based on three cases, one involving a transgender woman and two involving gay men, all who alleged they were fired by their employers due to their LGBTQ identities. These terminations, their lawyers argued, violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex.

The Supreme Court agreed.

The historic decision was written by conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch, who said, “An employer who fires an individual for being homosexual or transgender fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids.”


2)Utah and Virginia banned conversion therapy For LGBTQ youth

This year, Utah and Virginia became the 19th and 20th states to ban conversion therapy, an extremely harmful practice that studies show can lead to a rise in suicide attempts.

An administrative rule banning the practice for LGBTQ youth in Utah went into effect in January and was issued by the state’s Republican Governor, Gary Herbert.

Virginia’s ban made it the first southern state to ban conversion therapy for minors.

“Conversion therapy sends the harmful message that there is something wrong with who you are,” said Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (R) in March. “No one should be made to feel they are not okay the way they are — especially not a child. I’m proud to sign this ban into law.”


3)Three states & District of Columbia banned the gay and trans panic defenses

This year, New Jersey, Washington, and Colorado, become the 9th, 10th, and 11th states to ban the “Gay and Trans Panic Defense.”

Now, it is no longer allowed in these states to argue in court that a defendant committed murder due to “panic” after discovering their victim was LGBTQ. Washington D.C. has since banned the defense “strategy” as well.

Banning this defense is a big deal. According to the National LGBT Bar Association, dozens of murderers have been acquitted by using it.

“Gay and trans panic defenses are rooted in homophobia and abhorrent excuses that should never be used to justify violence against vulnerable populations,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy in a January statement. “With this new law, we are enacting critical measures to protect our friends and neighbors in the LGBTQ+ community.”


4)Virginia Passed Several Pro-Equality Bills

In 2019, Democrats took control of the Virginia legislature for the first time in over twenty years. Lawmakers in the state wasted no time in passing sweeping progressive legislation, including measures to protect the LGBTQ community.

In March, Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam signed three bills into law to increase protections for LGBTQ Virginians.

One bill requires the Department of Education to create policies to protect transgender students in elementary and secondary schools. Another expands the definition of a hate crime to include crimes committed based on a victim’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender, or disability.

The third bill, sponsored by the first out transgender person in the Virginia General Assembly, Delegate Danica Roem, gives localities the authority to prohibit anti-LGBTQ discrimination in housing, public accommodations, credit, employment and education.

And that’s not all. In April, Gov. Northam signed a bill passing anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across the state. Virginia is the 21st state to do so.


5)America voted for a rainbow wave of elected officials

More LGBTQ candidates were elected to public office in 2020 than ever before.

Three hundred thirty-four LGBTQ candidates won their elections this year, many of whom became the first LGBTQ person to hold their position.

Candidates like Delaware’s Sarah McBride, the nation’s first out transgender state senator, and New York’s Ritchie Torres, one of the two first out gay Black members of Congress, have made 2020 a year of shattered rainbow ceilings.

This increase in queer representation is sure to lead to even more legislative wins in the future.


6)President-Elect Joe Biden promised to advance LGBTQ protections in office

Not only will President-elect Joe Biden be the first president to enter the White House supporting marriage equality, but once sworn in, he has promised a wave of change for the LGBTQ community, and especially for transgender people.

Some of his pledges include reversing the Trump Administration’s ban on transgender people in the military, reinstating Obama era protections for transgender students in schools, and utilizing federal resources to curb violence against trans people.

Biden has also promised to prioritize passing the Equality Act during his first 100 days in office. The Equality Act would ban anti-LGBTQ discrimination at the national level.

While these changes haven’t yet happened, it seems the LGBTQ community has a few things to look forward to in 2021.

A post-election poll commissioned by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) found that 83 percent of LGBTQ voters supported eventual winner Joe Biden, which is slightly higher than GLAAD’s determination of 81 percent, and much higher than the 73 percent that AP VoteCast determined or the 63 percent that a New York Times-supported exit survey determined.

According to HRC’s poll, 37 percent of voters prioritized LGBTQ rights and equality when making decisions at the ballot box. That is up from 29 percent, from the number determined in a poll taken after the 2018 midterm elections.

“Over the last three elections, the share of LGBTQ voters and Equality Voters has continued to increase, solidifying our community and our allies as a key rising constituency that can make or break a politician’s success. Our issues matter, our votes matter and politicians around the country have taken notice,” HRC President Alphonso David stated in the announcement.

The polling was conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, with a margin of error of +/- 2.83 percent. It included 1,400 general election voters, meaning that approximately 518 voters signaled that they are “equality voters,” or voters who choose how to cast their ballot based on their support for equality for immigrants, people of color, and LGBTQ people.

In relaying the results, the HRC further criticized the Edison exit survey that determined that Trump increased his support among LGBTQ voters. “This finding is implausible,” they write, giving as an example that “in the Edison poll, New York is only marked as having 4% LGBTQ voters, a number that is highly doubtful.”

Amongst equality voters, 79 percent supported Joe Biden in the Presidential election. Only 19 percent supported President Trump.

“Despite some reports, LGBTQ voters did not waver in their opposition to Trump,” said the HRC.

The HRC poll also found an increase in support for the Equality Act.

“Despite what anti-equality forces would like us to believe, voters are not energized by hatred. They’re energized by inclusiveness,” David told The 19th, which first published the poll’s findings, “they’re energized by equality. They’re energized by people who will be standing up for all of us, not just some of us.”

“The majority of people support equality.”

Ricardo Menéndez March’s maiden speech to New Zealand’s House of Representatives was a barnburner as he exhorted his colleagues to “Be gay. Do crime.”

A self-described “transgressive queer socialist,” the young member of parliament (MP) emigrated from Mexico and is part of a wave of diverse legislators elected in 2020.

“I want to start by acknowledging everybody who has had to lie to work and come to survive,” Menéndez March started. “In our queer community, there’s a saying I love that goes, ‘Be gay. Do crime.’ And to me, it means to be transgressive, to acknowledge the decision makers who created rules that criminalize our survival and our existence.”

Menéndez March’s first speech lasted 15 minutes and outlined a solidly progressive worldview as he called out the country’s colonial history and political domination by white straight cisgender people.

“The rules were simply not made for us. They were made to uphold a system where the wealthy few keep getting richer at the expense of our planet. And this House is enabling it.”

New Zealand now has the queerest Parliament in the world with LGBTQ people making up 10% of the membership.


His speech was met with applause and hugs.

SIM Registration: NIMC Issues Fresh Guidelines for NIN Applicants

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) yesterday issued fresh guidelines for applicants to obtain their National Identification Number.


NIMC spokesman, Kayode Adegoke, made this known in a statement titled, ‘NIMC Adopts Booking System For NIN Enrolment’.

The statement partly read, “Mindful of the second wave of the COVID-19 which continues to severely affect public health and cause unprecedented disruptions, the commission wishes to announce that it has adopted a couple of measures to contain the spread of the virus whilst ensuring its services to Nigerians are not entirely interrupted.

“Effective December 30, 2020, attending to applicants would be based on Booking System. For Bookings, applicants are to visit any of the NIMC Offices closest to them during stipulated business hours (9am – 1pm).


“Once admitted into the office, a Number-Issuing queue management system will be in place to ensure orderliness and strict adherence to Covid-19 Protocols.”

The Commission also urged all applicants to use their face masks, observe social distancing and wash their hands while at its centres nationwide.

The federal government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) ordered telecommunications companies to deactivate telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their National Identity Number.


Large crowd thronging the NIMC web portal for the process of obtaining their National Identity Number led to the crash of the portal last week.

Large crowds also resurfaced at NIMC centres nationwide on Tuesday after the Christmas break.

As of October, the total number of mobile network connections was 207.58 million, but currently, only 43 million Nigerians have NIN, thus 164 million telephone users are at the risk of being deactivated on January 19, 2021.

The LGBTQ community made a major impact on the outcomes of the 2020 election season. LGBTQ Nation analysis of data revealed that without LGBTQ voters in key states, Donald Trump likely would have won reelection as President, for example. Further reviews have also concluded that Trump could have won again, if not for the force of LGBTQ voters all over the country.

Billy Porter doesn’t want you to forget. He’s working with GLAAD to remind everyone that LGBTQ voters, organizers, and groups like GLAAD made the difference in what was considered the most pivotal election of our time.

In a new video, the Pose star himself narrates a review of the tireless work that GLAAD committed to during the 2020 primary and general elections. The two-and-a-half minute spot highlights “the LGBTQ community’s impact on the 2020 general election, as well as the impact we are posed to have in the Georgia run-off,” GLAAD announced.

“After five primary debates without a single question about LGBTQ health care protections, workplace discrimination, violence against the community or support for the Equality Act, GLAAD deployed thirty years of media expertise to amplify the LGBTQ voice in the election conversation,” Porter explains.

He lists their media guide for journalists, petitions to debate moderators, and self-hosted Presidential Forum in Iowa as examples of the group “spotlighting LGBTQ issues on the national stage.”

“GLAAD went into combat mode against rampant lies and disinformation,” Porter continues, “with daily media pushback from its news and rapid response team, pre-election polling, and a heart-wrenching ad that aired on Fox News.”

“GLAAD led the charge to turn out LGBTQ and ally voters,” says Porter, “resulting in the biggest LGBTQ turnout ever.”

“Because of GLAAD, the voices — and the votes — of LGBTQ people and their allies were heard loud and clear at the ballot box, and GLAAD will continue to lead the fight for equality and acceptance,” Porter concludes.

Yet, the extent of progress for LGBTQ rights under incoming President Joe Biden’s administration remains uncertain. It all depends on if Democrats can take hold of the Senate by winning the runoff elections for Georgia’s two seats on January 5.

If either incumbent — Kelly Loeffler or David Perdue — were to defeat their challenger — Rev. Raphael Warnock or Jon Ossoff, respectively — Republicans would retain control of the Senate. That means current Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would remain in charge of the chamber’s agenda.

If both Loeffler and Perdue lose, there would be exactly 50 Republican and 50 Democrat Senators in the next Congress. That would allow Vice President-elect Kamala Harris to cast the deciding vote to end tiebreakers in the chamber, and giving pro-LGBTQ legislation like the Equality Act a chance of passing.

As Porter says, “the election is over, but GLAAD’s work goes on.”

That’s why GLAAD also announced that it will undertake yet another text messaging campaign this week, hoping to encourage millions of potential voters to make that difference yet again. They are working with LGBTQ organization Georgia Equality and VoteAmerica to reach as many voters as possible before polls close next Tuesday.

“Join millions of people supporting diversity and inclusion by voting in the Jan. 5th Senate runoff,” the sample text messages shared with LGBTQ Nation read. “Early voting is open now,” they remind readers, before encouraging them to find their nearest polling location and other information on the runoffs at GLAAD.org/georgia.

“The texts will continue through December 30 when early voting ends in select locations,” GLAAD said in a statement.

Earlier this month, the anti-LGBTQ records of Sens. Loeffler and Perdue were published to GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project, also in collaboration with Georgia Equality. They found that Loeffler donates her salary to an anti-LGBTQ group and has close ties to the Family Research Council, a hate group, while Perdue has earned praised from the Council and the Family Policy Alliance, a lobbying front for another anti-LGBTQ hate group, Focus on the Family.

Neither have voiced support, or even acknowledged, the proposed Equality Act, GLAAD points out. Both Ossoff and Rev. Warnock support it.

That’s part of why GLAAD is working just as hard to get the vote out in the Peach state — and so far, early voting numbers reflect higher turnout than in November’s election.

“The general election began with a lack of attention given to LGBTQ issues and pivoted to the Trump Administration falsely positioning itself as LGBTQ-affirming in a shameless effort to court LGBTQ voters and our allies,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis told LGBTQ Nation.

A post-election poll by GLAAD found that Trump only earned 14 percent of the LGBTQ vote, which was the same as he had in 2016. By contrast, Joe Biden earned 81 percent of the community’s vote.

That contradicted a previous analysis that determined that Trump had doubled his LGBTQ support in this election, based on an exit poll using a much smaller sample of LGBTQ respondents.

“Combatting that false narrative and growing visibility for LGBTQ issues became centerpieces of GLAAD’s largest election campaign ever,” Ellis said. “LGBTQ voters turned out in historic numbers and it’s thanks to our community, along with other diverse Americans, that pro-equality candidates crossed the finish line.”

GLAAD found that approximately 93 percent of LGBTQ identifying people voted, and 25 percent did so for the first time.

“Now, we must join together to secure another win for equality in the Senate run-off,” Ellis said, because “the Equality Act, an end to the trans military ban, and rollbacks of other recent anti-LGBTQ policies can become realities” after “years of advocacy.”

Members of the National Assembly (NASS) are reportedly planning to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari, a group has alleged.

Speaking through a statement on Monday, December 28, the group, Core All Progressives Congress Supporters Network (Co-APC-SuN), described the plots as "unacceptable, distasteful, offensive and condemnable." It also called for the removal of the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, who doubles as the chairman of the 9th NASS, The Sun reports. The group alleged that there are plots to remove President Buhari by the NASS and replace him with his VP, Yemi Osinbajo.The group, which spoke through its spokesman Alhaji Bala Abubakar, also vowed that it shall deploy the instruments at its disposal to closely monitor the political engagements of the Senate president. It also called on the All Progressives Congress (APC), members of the APC in the NASS and others to be vigilant "in order to foil the attempt and should not be allowed to generate political crisis in Nigeria. "We learnt reliably that these subversive elements within the party fold have concluded plans in alliance with opposition blocs in the parliament to replace President Buhari with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who is expected to only serve out the remaining two years of the Buhari Presidency and handover. "It is a veiled agenda to imperil Nigeria’s democracy, cause further anarchy in the polity. We shall not hesitate to use every legal force at our disposal to resist the manic ambition of some desperadoes to govern the country through backdoor tactics, instead of the popular ballot."

the House of Representatives vowed to take disciplinary action against one of its lawmakers Kingsley Chinda. Chinda, leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus, had on Monday, December 7, called for Buhari's impeachment following the overwhelming reactions that trailed the killing of rice farmers in Zabarmari and the security situation in the north. TRADERS at the Ochanja Market, the second largest in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State went up in flames on Wednesday, leaving in its trail, five persons dead, including a mother and her baby, and property worth billions of naira.

Onitsha markets had, over the years, witnessed many fire outbreaks, prompting successive administrations in the state to establish fire service stations at various points in the city.



However, the fire service, as an institution, has been very ineffective in the state, apparently because the fire outbreak had not been rampant in recent years as it used to be. At the fire service stations, it is either the trucks are grounded, or there is no water. Sometimes, the official telephones at the fire stations do not work, just as most of the offices are usually empty most of the time.

The latest Onitsha fire incident was caused by a fuel tanker filled with premium motor spirit, PMS, otherwise known as petrol. The tanker spilled its contents into the drainage at the ever busy Upper Iweka in the city and for about two hours, the liquid was flowing in the drainage until it suddenly caught fire. The resultant effect was the destruction of hundreds of shops and loss of human lives.

At the time the fire service operators eventually approached the scene, it was difficult to meander to the point of the inferno due to heavy traffic, as many vehicles were blocking the access road. This problem, coupled with the inadequacy of the fire service, proved to be a stumbling block towards fighting the fire such that the traders just watched while their goods went up in flames. It was so pathetic.



The following day, the traders rushed to the market to assess the extent of damage only for most of them to break down in tears as all they had labored for over the years, had become mere debris.

One of the victims, Mr. Chukwuka Okeke, a neighbor to the woman that died with her baby, described the fire incident as unfortunate, but avoidable. He said the fire trucks could have succeeded in putting out the fire if the roads were free.

Speaking about the late woman, Okeke said: “It was not up to twenty minutes I chatted with her before she was consumed in the inferno. We were in our shops when I got the call that there was fire incident at Upper Iweka. Though I saw smoke going up from a distance, nobody could believe it would extend to our shops.

“For over three hours, we perceived the smell of fuel from the tanker as it flowed through the drainage until the whole thing went up in flames. The woman had already rushed out of the shop with her baby, but later went back. As she was running, she suddenly slipped and fell inside the gutter which was already in flames and nobody could rescue her and her baby.”

According to Okeke, “the woman, whose husband also owns a shop in the city, had the baby early this year after 16years of marriage. She got married in 2003, but had her first baby early this year.”

Mr. Nnamdi Onyedika, a dealer on female wears and whose goods were completely burnt, told Saturday Vanguard that he made purchases from an importer and stocked his shop that morning, only for everything to be destroyed few hours later. Onyedika, who said he served his master for seven years and was settled last year, said the fire had devastated his plans in life.

“My market was doing well and I was denying myself the luxuries of life to build the business, but look at what has happened. What will I do now? I have nobody to go to and I used all my savings to beef up the stock in my shop before this fire incident,” he said.

Another trader, Mr. Obiorah Nwankwo said it was the second time his shop got burnt in Onitsha and wondered if everything was normal with him.

His words: “I used to stay at Ose Okwodu Market where I rented a shop. One day, my shop and few others were engulfed by fire after we had closed for the day. I had to do menial jobs for sometime before I could raise funds to rent another shop at Ochanja Market. With this fire and the losses, what am I going to do? I still have a young family and I don’t know how I am going to pay my children’s school fees.”

Meanwhile, Governor Willie Obiano has invited the affected traders to assemble at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka on Monday for documentation and possible assistance from the state government.

The governor, who visited the scene of the fire incident on Thursday, was in Onitsha to assess the situation.

Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr. Don Adinuba, in a statement on behalf of the state government said: “Governor Obiano and the entire people of Anambra State regret the unfortunate situation and His Excellency has taken steps to address the concerns of those affected.

Government therefore requests owners of properties affected by the tragic accident, shop owners and family members of deceased victims to assemble at Ekwueme Square, Awka on Monday October 21 2019 at 11am for documentation and to see how the Anambra State government can assist them.

“ A panel headed by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke has been set up by the governor to immediately determine the cause of the accident, why the firemen could not put out the fire, and how the condition of the victims can be ameliorated.

“Governor Obiano and all citizens of Anambra State identify with victims of this unfortunate fire incident and the general inhabitants of Onitsha over this sad inferno. The Anambra State government will do its best to stand by those affected.

“Government therefore calls on all citizens to remain calm in the face of this disaster and be reassured of government’s commitment to the well- being of all and sundry.”

He explained that security agencies in the state had been directed to ensure that law and order was maintained within and around the affected areas.

Also speaking on the incident, former member of House of Representatives, who was also the security adviser to former Governor Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Chief Chuma Nzeribe said those in charge of the state fire service must be held responsible for the Onitsha incident.

“As security adviser to Anambra State government few years ago, I took steps to ensure there was no single fire incident in any of our major markets then

“We have an Anambra State Fire Service headed by somebody and they must be seen to do their job, otherwise somebody should be held accountable for this huge loss,” Nzwribe said.

Former secretary to the state government, SSG, Mr. Oseloka Obaze said the inferno was most regrettable. “My heart goes out to those directly and indirectly affected, especially those who lost loved ones. Precious lives and properties worth millions of Naira have been lost, and perhaps needlessly so,” Obaze said.
