Ex President Olusegun Obasanjo has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to stop using dwindling crude prices for lack of performance. According to Obasanjo, he met worse when he took power in 1999, but made the best of it. He reminded Buhari that unlike his administration that met a paltry $3.7 billion, in the coffers, Goodluck Jonathan left behind a whooping $30 billion. He said “When I assumed office in 1999, I inherited $3.7 billion in reserve, while Buhari met $30 billion, almost 10 times of what I met then, and the price of oil then was $9. When it got to $20, I was dancing. know the price is down now and with time, it will jump up again. What Buhari is doing currently is preparing ground for Nigeria to take advantage when it goes up again.” Obasanjo expressed angst against those asking him to account for recovered Abacha loot, describing them as illiterates and silly people. Obasanjo, who stated this in an interview, weekend, said the role of his office was to facilitate the recovery process and not how it was put to use. He said: “They said the money recovered from Abacha, I should account for it. What stupidity! The man who asked for it, the man who gave the judgement or who answered them are all silly, with due respect. “I don’t keep account, all Abacha loots were sent to Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and every bit of it was reported to Minister of Finance. My job was to write where we can get help to recover the money. “Every penny that comes out of it went to CBN, so if they want to know what happened to the money, they should call CBN governor or call the Minister of Finance. “But again, it shows ignorance, total ignorance, which is lacking and you wonder, are these people educated? They can also approach the man who helped us in recovering process to give the list of money recovered and where he took it.” Read @http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/06/justin-stop-complaining-of-crude-price.html |
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has condemned the Monday killing of over 30 Igbo protesters who were mainly members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), saying it appeared that President Muhammadu Buhari was turning the people of the South East and South South to what he called politically endangered species. He called on the international community to take note of the wanton killings being perpetrated by the Buhari-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government. In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said there was no justification whatsoever for the killing of over 30 Igbo youths just because they were marking Biafra Day in memory of the former Leader of the defunct Biafra Republic, the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. He said it was worrisome that Nigeria and its people had been more divided since the advent of Buhari’s government, adding that approach to civil unrests of any kind under the government was causing more security problems in the country. The governor, who reiterated his avowed belief in the unity of Nigeria, said it was unspeakable for security men to have used life ammunitions against the Igbo protesters and went on to justify the murder of innocent Nigerians just because their views were different from those of the President. “To even justify the killing by claiming that the Igbo youths protest was orchestrated in order to mar the first anniversary of Buhari’s government is to say the least, wicked and animalistic”, the governor said. He said it was worrisome that more than 150 Igbo youths had been killed by Nigerian security operatives under the directive of Buhari’s government, adding: “It appears that President Buhari has made up his mind to eliminate as many South-East and South-South people as possible. Nigerian troops have rescued 236 persons held captive by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. The victims were in two batches of 79 and 157 comprising men, women and children. Some of the captives were freed by troops deployed in Operation Lafiya Dole and their neighbouring counterparts under the Multinational Joint Task Force. Others presented themselves to the troops, claiming that they escaped from the insurgents’ den. In a statement on the successes being recorded by the military in the ongoing offensive against the terrorists, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, said that the troops had been clearing the remnants of Boko Haram militants in their respective areas of responsibilities and rescued the abducted persons, arrested suspected terrorists, and recovered weapons from them. According to him, the troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion, 25 Task Force Brigade, on May 30, 2016, received 79 persons who claimed to have been held captive by Boko Haram terrorists at Ngwalimiri village but escaped from their location. They comprised12 men, 24 women, 31 children and 12 infants, Usman said, adding that they were undergoing preliminary investigation and screening to determine their status before onward movement to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs’) camps for rehabilitation. Col. Usman said that to keep Bitta-Damboa Road open and secure to commuters, troops of the 28 Task Force Brigade have cleared Bulajani, Mulgwo and Muotu villages of the remnants of Boko Haram elements. He said during an encounter at Moutu, a soldier sustained injury on the forehead, while five Boko Haram terrorists were killed by the troops while others escaped with gunshot wounds. The troops, he explained, recovered three locally made guns. The advancing troops linked up with their counterparts of the 25 Task Force Brigade at Gombori village and rescued 157 persons escaping from Boko Haram terrorists’ captivity. The rescued persons comprised 47 women, 91 children, 19 men. They are currently undergoing preliminary investigation and thorough screening to also determine their status, Col. Usman said. Similarly, troops of 7 Division Garrison arrested a 28-year-old suspected Boko Haram terrorists’ spy, Musa Mallam Aman, around the Garrison Headquarters complex in Maiduguri metropolis. “Preliminary investigation confirmed that he hails from Maradhi village in Niger Republic and added that he was not alone as there were Boko Haram terrorists’ spies in Maiduguri. While efforts have been intensified to track and arrest his other accomplices, Musa has since been handed over to Joint Interrogation Committee (JIC). Troops of 22 Brigade Garrison and their Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Dikwa have also embarked on routine and fighting patrols to maintain security on construction and rehabilitation works of public buildings and infrastructure that would facilitate return of public officials and people back to their ancestral homes. “In addition, the troops have been carrying out clearance operations and patrols to keep Maiduguri-Mafa-Dikwa-Gomboru Ngala road open and secure. “The troops of 26 Task Force Brigade on their part, have intensified patrols and clearance operations in their area of responsibility. It was in that process that they discovered an Unexploded Object (UXO) and its casing at Hausari Street Gada Mayo, yesterday afternoon,” he said. In a related development, 77 Boko Haram terrorists have surrendered to troops of the122 Task Force Battalion. They comprised 17 men, 16 women, 16 male children and 28 female children. The surrendered terrorists have been moved to Yamteke by combined team of 26 Task Force Brigade for preliminary investigation and screening, Usman said. Smokers experience one mutation to their DNA for every 15 cigarettes they smoke, according to a study that mapped out the genetic blueprint of a lung cancer patient. British researchers led the massive international project, which identified 23,000 mutations that bore the expected signs of damage caused by chemicals in tobacco smoke. All cancers are caused by mistakes in the genetic code - mutations in DNA that can be triggered by environmental agents. The scientists hope the results will help them understand the causes of cancer and to develop new treatments. Theyfound the genetic defects ranged from single-letter changes in theperson's code to deletions or re-arrangements of hundreds of thousandsof letters. No single mutation stood out as being the primarycause of the disease. Instead most were 'passenger' mutations thatappeared to influence the development of cancer only in combination. Study leader Dr Peter Campbell, from the Wellcome Trust SangerInstitute in Cambridgeshire said: 'The knowledge we extract over thenext few years will have major implications for treatment. 'By identifying all the cancer genes we will be able to develop new drugs that target the specific mutated genes and work out which patients will benefit from these novel treatments.' Dr Andy Futreal, also from the Wellcome Trust, said: 'Cancers occur when control of cell behaviour is lost - cells grow how, when and where they shouldn't. 'Mutations in DNA caused by, for example, cigarette smoke are passed on to every subsequent generation of daughter cells, a permanent record of the damage done. 'Like an archaeologist, we can begin to reconstruct the history of the cancer clone - revealing a record of past exposure and accumulated damage in the genome.' David Cameron was given a lot of stick this month after he was overheard referring to Nigeria and Afghanistan as ‘fantastically’ corrupt. But we doubt he would want to use the same superlatives when talking about a claim, from a leading Mafia expert, that Britain is the most corrupt place in the world. When it comes to such subjects Roberto Saviano is a man whose opinion carries some weight. The journalist is living under police protection after publishing revelations about the Mafia in Naples in his expose Gomorrah and the international cocaine trade in ZeroZeroZero. Th 36-year-old’s comments about the UK were made during the Hay Literary Festival where he told the audience why he felt Britain topped the charts for corruption. He said: ‘If I asked you what is the most corrupt place on Earth you might tell me well it’s Afghanistan, maybe Greece, Nigeria, the South of Italy and I will tell you it’s the UK. ‘It’s not the bureaucracy, it’s not the police, it’s not the politics but what is corrupt is the financial capital. 90 per cent of the owners of capital in London have their headquarters offshore. ‘Jersey and the Cayman’s are the access gates to criminal capital in Europe and the UK is the country that allows it. ‘That is why it is important why it is so crucial for me to be here today and to talk to you because I want to tell you , this is about you, this is about your life, this is about your government.’ The UK is ranked 10th in the world in the latest Corruption perceptions Index by Transparency International. We also played host to the Anti-Corruption Summit earlier this month. But offshore tax havens were thrust in to the spotlight earlier this year when the Panama Papers were published by multiple news organisations. As such, Mr Cameron pledged a global crackdown on corruption last month. But the Prime Minister has faced calls to reform off shore tax havens operating on its own Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories – like Jersey and the Cayman islands. As the Federal Government moves against the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), militancy in the region has taken another dimension as a new group: The New Delta Suicide Squad (NDSS) has emerged. Unlike the NDA which concentrates its attacks on pipelines and facilities of major oil firms, the new group has threatened to destroy the equipment of private oil firms’ installations in the region. The announcement of the group came on the heels of President Muhammadu Buhari’s threat in a national broadcast to mark his first anniversary in office, to crush the upsurge in militancy in the Niger Delta which has crippled Nigeria’s oil production. The NDSS warned owners of tank farms, storage tanks and private jetties to quit the Niger Delta within seven days. It said failure to comply with the deadline, the owners of such facilities stood the risk of losing their investments. In a statement issued on Monday by the spokesman of the group, Harry Ebiye, he said: “The New Niger Delta Suicide Squad warns all owners of tank farms, storage tanks and private jetties to quit the region within the next seven days beginning from the date of this publication or risk the destruction of all their facilities from the date of the expiration of this ultimatum. “The exploitation of this region by scavengers, economic pirates, and cowboys must come to an end” Ebiye said. Top officials of the Federal Government are divided over how to handle the current attacks on oil installations in the Niger Delta by militants. A meeting with representatives of top militants in the region, reportedly organised last week by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) on how to contain the security problems in the Niger Delta, ended in a deadlock. One camp had reportedly broached the idea of using a former South-South governor to reach out to the militants, but shelved the idea when it was realised that the former governor did not have the required clout and contacts amongst the militants. Another issue being reportedly considered is that of the detention for over 70 days, without trial, of Azibaola Roberts, a cousin of former President Goodluck Jonathan, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Ironically, Roberts is being held by the EFCC for a $40 million contract to secure oil pipelines during the Jonathan administration. Some security sources hinted on the possibility of the government engaging Roberts to negotiate with the militants currently destroying oil pipelines in the region, since he had successfully handled such projects before on behalf of the government. An EFCC source hinted that they did not have sufficient evidence to charge Roberts to court, but that having detained him for over 70 days, the commission may be left with no option than to charge him to “any court, just to save face.” Source Read more @ http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/05/new-militant-group-emerges-issues.html |
Former Chadian dictator Hissene Habre has been sentenced to life in prison for war crimes, crimes against humanity and a litany of other charges, including rape. The verdict brings a long-awaited reckoning to families of the up to 40,000 people killed and the many kidnapped, raped or tortured under his 1982-1990 rule as president of Chad. Habre's trial by the Extraordinary African Chambers is the first in which the courts of one country are prosecuting the former ruler of another for alleged human rights crimes. Victims groups who had travelled to Dakar to hear the verdict were visibly moved by a judgement that comes a quarter century after the abuses they suffered. 'Hissene Habre, this court finds you guilty of crimes against humanity, rape, forced slavery, and kidnapping,' as well as war crimes, said Gberdao Gustave Kam, Burkinabe president of the Extraordinary African Chambers (CAE) court. 'The court condemns you to life in prison,' Kam added, giving Habre 15 days to appeal the sentence. Habre raised his arms into the air on hearing the verdict, shouting 'Down with France-afrique!' referring to the term used for France's continuing influence on its former colonies. 'This verdict sends a powerful message that the days when tyrants could brutalise their people, pillage their treasury and escape abroad to a life of luxury are coming to an end,' Reed said in a statement. 'Today will be carved into history as the day that a band of unrelenting survivors brought their dictator to justice.' Known as a skilled desert warrior often in combat fatigues to fit the role, Habre fled to Senegal after his 1990 ouster by Chad's current President Idriss Deby. Witnesses recounted the horror of life in Chad's prisons, describing in graphic detail abusive and often deadly punishments inflicted by Habre's feared secret police, the Documentation and Security Directorate (DDS). Victims were subject to electric shocks and waterboarding while some had gas sprayed in their eyes or spice rubbed into their genitals, the court heard. Teachers in Mumias who send children out of school for fees will be arrested. Philip Soi, the area's deputy county commissioner, warned ‘notorious teachers’ at the weekend against the act. He said during a public baraza at Shibale that the government has allocated a lot of money towards free education. Soi said the reason was for children to be kept in school in order for them to catch up with lessons. “I appeal to parents and anybody who finds a child sent home for fees to report to my office so that the law can be followed to know why such child is not in school," said Soi. He directed chiefs, their assistants as well as county ward and sub-county administrators to take stock of teachers who are fond of sending children home for fees. “We don't want to meet school children either from primary or secondary schools on the roads. Most of them claim they have been sent home for fees against the government policy” he said. “The administrators should also go for parents who stay home with children without sending them to school. There is no other remedy on such parents other than facing the law” he said. He said the country cannot achieve millennium development goals - which expired in 2015 - when teachers keep children on the road from Monday to Friday in the name of collecting money from home. "This behaviour must be a thing of the past in Mumias so that our children can achieve the goal of universal primary education,” he said. He said the government pays tuition and teachers' salaries and there nothing else that should be demanded from parents. The DCC also blamed school board members of colluding with principals to frustrate parents by manipulating school budgets. He said Mumias has a poverty level of 47 per cent with most parents barely affording two meals a day. He called on the residents to embrace farming and engage in business to reduce the level of poverty in the area. Read more @ http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/05/mumias-dc-wants-teachers-sending.html |
A Nigerian man have been executed by the Saudi authorities after convicting him of murdering a police officer. It was the 95th execution of the year in the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom, which imposes the death penalty for offences including murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery, rape and apostasy. The surge in executions has drawn concern from human rights groups. Fahd Houssawi was executed on Sunday in the western city of Taif, the interior ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency. He had been found guilty of strangling a policeman and beating him to death, the ministry said. Amnesty International has warned that at the current rate Saudi Arabia could see more than 100 executions in the first half of 2016. The London-based watchdog said the kingdom carried out at least 158 death sentences last year, making it the third most prolific executioner after Iran and Pakistan. Its figures do not include secretive China. The executions this year are higher than at the same point last year, Amnesty said. Murder and drug trafficking cases account for the majority of Saudi executions, although 47 people were put to death for “terrorism” offences on a single day in January. They included prominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr whose execution prompted Iranian protesters to torch Saudi diplomatic missions, triggering a severing of relations. But is not a reason for the rev to abandon his mass |
It was a sad day at St. Brigde Catholic church Afia Nine Parish as a Rev Father slapped a young man in church. The young man who sagged his trouser in church but meant no harm was embarrassed as the Rev. while giving his Sermon walked up to him and asked him to stand up in the great crowd. The young man did as instructed and to the greatest surprise of the whole congregation the Rev. gave him (the young man) a dirty slap for sagging his trouser and even took photo of him. Nobody in the church questioned the Rev. and in anticipation the Rev. who could no longer hold his peace left the whole congregation went into his car and drove off. The whole church scattered and everybody both the mass servers left in dismay. That was how the MASS ended in Afia Nine service today in Enugu. Fresh crisis is brewing in the All Progressives Congress , (APC ) in Ondo State following an alleged face off between the chairman of the party in the state, Honorable Isaac Kekemeke and the Minister of state for Niger Delta affairs, Professor Cladius Daramola. The duo reportedly engaged in a confrontation at Senator Tayo Alasoadura’s residence in Akure, the State capital during the minister’s condolence visit to the senator, who recently lost his wife to the cold hands of death. Trouble had started when Kekemeke, on sighting the Minister, who had just granted interview to journalists, started shouting “Baba”. It was gathered that the chairman approached the Minister and started argument about who is the leader of the party in the state. Kekemeke reportedly told the Minister that irrespective of his position at the Federal level, he must give due respect to him as the chairman of the party, describing himself as the number one party man in the state read more @http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/05/ondo-apc-in-crisis-as-minister-party.html |
David Cameron told the Queen earlier this week that “we’ve got the leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain... Nigeria and Afghanistan, possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world.” Cameron’s comments, which he made at the Queens 90th Birthday event, sounded so akin to Robert Mugabe’s comments two years ago. At his own 90th Birthday luncheon in 2014, the Zimbabwean leader shared his opinion on just how corrupt Nigeria is, with some colourful illustration. Decrying the deepening levels of bribery in his country, Mugabe asked, "are we now like Nigerians where you have to reach into your pockets to get anything done?" At the time, Nigerians were so upset at the suggestion that their country was so corrupt. Citizens immediately took to social media to let Mugabe know. The Nigerian government summoned the Zimbabwean ambassador Stanley Kunjeku in Abuja to express their discontent. They labelled Mr Mugabe's comments as "vitriolic and denigrating.” Former US Ambassador to Nigeria John Campbell also joined in to defend Nigeria by pointing out that “technically,” Zimbabwe is more corrupt, but challenging both countries to face their “numerous other internal challenges.” With this recent history, one would not have been surprised at a similar reaction to Cameron’s comment. However, on his part, President Buhari declined the call to demand an apology from Cameron, graciously averting a potential diplomatic incident. Speaking at the London Anti-corruption summit, Buhari said, "I am not going to demand any apology from anybody. What I am demanding is the return of our assets." This has been President Buhari’s request to international partners at many forums since he took office. He kicked off his first official visit to Washington last year, by appealing to President Obama to help in locating and returning $150 Billion stolen from Nigeria and held in foreign banks. Buhari’s message echoes the joint appeal of African leaders. According to the UN Economic Commission for Africa, the continent is losing more than $50 Billion annually through illicit financial outflows. This routine, annual loss is approximately double the official development assistance (ODA) that Africa receives. These figures were reported to African Union leaders last year, along with detailed analysis of the biggest losers by share of cumulative outflows, (Nigeria topped that list), and the countries where these African resources routinely wind up.(Destination countries.) On behalf of the African Union, former South African president Thabo Mbeki is meeting with the international community to negotiate ways to stop these illicit outflows and see how to return the resources from the countries where they are sitting, back into African economies. We have to recall that corruption is a complex problem that takes many different forms. While some corruption takes the shape of citizens bribing police and public service providers at the domestic service-delivery fronts, some manifestations of corruption are truly global, crossing borders and affecting many different countries near and far. Resources illicitly extracted from one country wind up in another, (sometimes via yet a third country), depriving the source-country of the means to support its economy and provide services to its citizens. Given the currently vast resources leaving Africa facilitated by corruption, it is a noble gesture for African leaders to welcome criticism, acknowledge and address the domestic problems, but also remain politically and diplomatically engaged with seeking international solutions. Mr. Buhari acknowledges “an image problem abroad,” as he said on a visit to the UK earlier this year, much to the ire of some of his citizens. He has however insisted on just one thing. “Help us bring our money back.” This call for joint action was his major request at the London summit this week, which was appropriately themed, “Tackling Corruption Together.” Mr. Buhari and other African leaders should be pleased that the London summit has agreed to widen this discussion by establishing a “Global Forum for Asset Recovery” supported by the UN and the World Bank Read More @http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/05/so-what-is-fantastically-corrupt-country.html |

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed that western education was not against Islam in any way but complimenting it. This observation was made by the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi during a lecture to commemorate the Children’s Day celebration held recently at the Alausa Secretariat Mosque in Ikeja. According to him, Western education is a blessing that has not only brought civilisation but also made life a lot easier for people. “Western education in form of science and technology has revolutionised the world in the area of communication, transportation, petroleum, engineering and the whole world including the Arab countries are benefitting from the development today. While explaining that what is not in tandem with Islam are some western ways of life which are not in agreement with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Hadith, he listed cultism, kidnapping, rape, drug abuse, child abuse, homosexualism, sexual harassment, robbery as parts of the contradiction. He therefore charged parents and clerics not to join the people who always ascribe moral decadence in the society to western education which is responsible for keeping many Muslim children out of the school system, saying the development is dangerous. Our children can grow in pursuit of “Western education for their development as future leaders without losing their dignity as Muslims,” he stressed. Also speaking, the guest lecturer at the event, Ustaz Sidiq Uthman Okanlawon, who spoke on the “Impact of Western Education on the development of Islam: Focus on the Muslim youths” frowned at the curriculum that does not give priority to the teaching of religion, saying that children who are bred under such condition cannot have the fear of God and that is one of the major problems facing the country. He enjoined Muslims especially the youths to focus more on Islamic. Read more @ http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/05/western-education-islam-complimentary.html |
The Kogi State government says the state chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Onuh Edoka, is a “ghost worker”, and has fired him. Mr. Edoka was one of about 9000 people sacked following a screening exercise to weed out illegal workers from the 21 local government areas of the state. Mr. Edoka, who serves as head of both the Medical Health Workers Union and the NLC in the state, said he was employed in 1989, and currently serves as a Disease and Surveillance Officer in the state. He said he was baffled by the result of the screening exercise headed by Paul Okuntimo, a retired general, who gained notoriety for his role in the incarceration of the late activist, Saro Wiwa. “The General’s committee claims that I submitted the wrong bank statements. But they only asked for my statement of accounts for the past two years which I submitted,” Mr. Edoka said in a telephone interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Wednesday. Speaking on behalf of the state chapter of the NLC, Mr Edoka said the workers union would take to the streets to challenge the government’s actions. “The government just got a bailout based on the current staff strength. Suddenly they want to retrench workers to divert the funds even though some of these workers have not been paid for over 23 months,” he said. “The NLC is saying that these people are not ghost workers. They are living beings and we are ready to bring them out on the streets of Lokoja so that the world can see that they are not ghosts but real workers of Kogi state,” Mr Eboka said. The government said the screening process was transparent and designed to identify persons who gained employment or obtained promotions fraudulently. Gbenga Olorunpomi, a media aide to Gov. Yayaha Bello of Kogi State, said some of the workers who failed the screening exercise did not furnish the committee with the required information. “For example, many of them refused to supply their BVNs [Bank Verification Numbers]. This automatically brings up the question of why they don’t have BVNs if they don’t have anything to hide,” he said, adding that the current list is merely a preliminary list and that the said workers would be given the opportunity to rectify any deficiency. “The governor has assured the people that no legitimate worker in Kogi state will be sacked. But there are some people who got into the system fraudulently. For those people, we have no apologies,” Mr. Olorunpomi said. A new list, which will clarify the reasons for the screening failure, is expected to be released within the week. Olisa Metuh, the former spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, has a corruption case to answer at the High Court, the Court of Appeal in Abuja ruled Wednesday. The appeal court dismissed an application filed by Mr. Metuh, challenging an earlier court ruling that quashed his no-case-submission. Mr. Metuh had filed a non-case submission at the High Court, arguing that he had no case to answer, and that he should be discharged. His lawyer, Onyeachi Ikpeazu, said that evidences against his client were insufficient to prove a case against him. He said it was up to the prosecution to prove that N400 million received by his Mr. Metuh’s company was paid for illegal purposes. After arguments, Justice Okon Abang of the High Court dismissed that application. Mr. Metuh challenged the ruling at the appeal court, which also dismissed the application on Wednesday. In a unanimous judgement, a three-member panel led by Justice Abdul Aboki said Mr. Metuh ought to open his case and proceed with his defence, as he had done. “Where a no case submission is adduced, the appellant should explain exactly what happened,” the judge said. “There is need for the appellant to offer an explanation on the prima fascie case established against him.” The court therefore dismissed the application for lacking in merit. But speaking with journalists after the ruling, Mr. Ikpeazu said his client had the legal prerogative to appeal, even at the Supreme Court. He said his client had opened his defense already at the Federal High Court and that there were issues in the Appeal Court ruling which the defense team was not comfortable with. “After due consultation with our client, I will instruct our team on the next action. Our client has the right of appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. “Chief Metuh had shown sufficient evidence that he was not aware of the source of the N400 million made available to him by the former president and he has shown his willingness, since the commencement of this matter, to refund the said sum even when there is no guilt knowledge (mens rea),” Mr. Ikpeazu stated. On an earlier ruling in the day by Mr. Abang, denying Mr. Metuh’s application to travel abroad for medical treatment, Mr. Ikpeazu said what was important was the health of Mr. Metuh. “Even the constitution recognizes the fact that an accused should be alive and fit to face trial and defend himself,” said Mr. Ikpeazu Read more @ http://www.buzorpages.com/2016/05/metuh-has-corruption-case-to-answer.html

Protests outside a Donald Trump rally turned violent Tuesday night in Albuquerque when a bullet was fired through a window at the city's convention center. Around 100 protesters broke through a barricade outside the building shortly after Trump took to the stage, and tried to throw rocks through the window at they set fires on the street outside. Some set fires on the street and threw rocks at police. One police officer told reporters that a shot was fired from a pellet gun, and a second officer said it was a bullet. Subsequent reports have cast doubts over the alleged gunfire. Grenades erupted through the streets as police tried to surround the protesters. Albuquerque Police locked down the convention center's main hall, which was empty except for staff, security and reporters filing stories. Activists outside had tried to force their way in as Trump was finishing an hour-long speech, but a line of police forced them back. One table holding a vendor's Trump merchandise was set on fire, and protesters threw flaming t-shirts at police. They responded with smoke canisters and pepper spray in an effort to disperse the crowd. During the rally, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was interrupted repeatedly by protesters, who shouted, held up banners and resisted removal by security officers. The banners included the messages 'Trump is Fascist' and 'We've heard enough.' Trump responded with his usual bluster, instructing security to remove the protesters and mocking their actions by telling them to 'Go home to mommy.' He responded to one demonstrator by asking, 'How old is this kid?' Then he provided his own answer: 'Still wearing diapers.' Trump's supporters responded with chants of 'Build that wall!' Protesters outside overran barricades and clashed with police in riot gear. They also burned T-shirts and other items labeled with Trump's catchphrase, 'Make America Great Again.' Minnesota's governor has decided to get in formation as he declared Monday 'Beyoncé Day' in the state ahead of the singer's performance in the Twin Cities. Gov Mark Dayton proclaimed May 23, 2016, as 'Beyoncé Day' because of the singer's influence on 'many young girls and women with powerful, positive messages in her songs'. The declaration recognized the 34-year-old Houston singer's success in the music industry. 'Beyoncé's impact and success has been widely-recognized,' a press release from Dayton's office stated. The singer first performed in Minnesota during the Verizon Ladies First Tour in 2004. She returned in 2009 as part of her I Am... World Tour, and most recently performed in the state in 2013, during the Mrs Carter Show World Tour. The declaration of Bey Day comes just before her Formation World Tour performance scheduled at the TCF Bank Stadium at 7pm. Francis told the imam: 'The meeting is the message.' It comes five years after the Cairo-based Al-Azhar froze talks with the Vatican to protest comments by then-Pope Benedict XVI. Benedict had demanded greater protection for Christians in Egypt after a New Year's bombing on a Coptic Christian church in Alexandria killed 21 people. Since then, Islamic attacks on Christians in the region have only increased, but the Vatican and Al-Azhar nevertheless sought to rekindle ties, with a Vatican delegation visiting Cairo in February and extending the invitation for el-Tayyib to visit. Francis and el-Tayyib spoke privately for 25 minutes in the pope's private library, bidding each other farewell with an embrace. El-Tayyib and his delegation then had talks with the Vatican cardinal in charge of inter-religious dialogue. The Vatican said the meeting held a 'great significance' for Catholic-Muslim dialogue. In a statement, spokesman the Reverend Federico Lombardi said Francis and el-Tayyib discussed the need for 'authorities and the faithful of the world's great religions to show a common commitment to peace in the world'. They also discussed the rejection of violence and extremism, and the plight of Christians 'in the context of conflicts and tensions in the Mideast and their protection,' the statement said. After the audience, el-Tayyib travels to Paris to open a Muslim-Catholic conference on East-West relations. The Vatican's relations with Islam hit several bumps during Benedict's papacy. He outraged Muslims with a 2006 speech quoting a Byzantine emperor as saying some of the Prophet Muhammad's teachings were 'evil and inhuman'. The subsequent suspension of talks with Al-Azhar institutionalized the bad blood. El-Tayyib, however, sent a message of congratulations to Francis upon his 2013 election and said he hoped for renewed cooperation. Francis responded, and has made clear over the course of his three-year pontificate that relations with Islam are a top priority. In a recent interview with the French Catholic newspaper La Croix, Francis took a conciliatory line toward Islam, saying 'I sometimes dread the tone' when people refer to Europe's 'Christian' roots. 'It is true that the idea of conquest is inherent in the soul of Islam,' he said. But he added that Christianity, too, had its 'triumphalist' undertones. 'It is also possible to interpret the objective in Matthew's Gospel, where Jesus sends his disciples to all nations, in terms of the same idea of conquest.' People who say they don’t identify with any religion now outnumber Christians as the country becomes less religious, a study has found. Almost half the population of England and Wales said they had no religion – referred to as ‘nones’ – in 2014 study, almost double the figure of 25% recorded in the census just three years earlier. People defining themselves as Christian, including Anglicans, Catholics and other denominations, made up 43.8% of the population – lower than the 48.8% of nones. Christian churches are also struggling to obtain new recruits from atheist or agnostic backgrounds. The vast majority of converts to faith come from other Christian denominations, rather than non-Christians or people identifying as having no religion. According to the report, four out of ten adults raised as Anglican – and a similar number of those raised Catholic - now identify as having no religion. In a recent interview, Patience Ozokwor speaks on her new religious life, how she met God, the retreats she holds and having to ditch her previous lifestyle which included wearing trousers, dreadlocks and jewellery. The Star Tells met up with Ozokwor at a church event at St. Marks Anglican Church in Eziobodo Village, Imo State, where the actress famous for her ‘wicked mother-in-law’ roles, revealed how she fasted for 30 days this year. The interview gets interesting as the actress who had starred in over 100 movies, revealed she has not been acting in any movie shoots ever since that intense praying and fasting this year, even though she previously made a over N1.5million per week from movie shoots. And on how her family feels about this new lifestyle, she says her daughter is deeply upset while her brother thought she is mentally ill. According to Star Tells: “[Patience Ozokwor] normally organises a personal retreat for herself in the first few days of the new year, when it was time to have her 2016 retreat, she heard the voice of the Holy Spirit telling her to fast for 21 days, she complained that she have so many projects to handle, Endorsements and movies to shoot within that period, and the Lord extended it to a 30 days fast due to her complaints. During this fasting period, The Lord revealed to her, how she will be a voice for him all over the world, how people’s attention will be channeled from her image on Nollywood to The Gospel. She said one of the things God warned her on, was her dressing and appearance. She said that Putting on Makeup, wearing Jewelry and putting on Trouser as a Lady is wrong, she said that she has been preaching to colleagues in Nollywood, but God told her to put off her Dreads, to stop wearing Jewelries and Trousers, that she could have gone to Hell, if she died December 31, 2015 despite the preaching she’s been doing, just because of her appearance. When asked about her Nollywood life, Patience Ozokwor narrated that the Holy Spirit has not specifically directed her to quit or to not. She said that she has not shot any movie since that encounter in January, that she used to get an average of 1.5 Million Naira weekly, but that God has miraculously been providing her daily bread. She warned that it will be harder for colleagues in the movie industry, with permanent tattoos and eyebrows when they eventually encounter Christ. She also said that she should stop being referred to as Mama G, as that name was for when she was in the world.” You can read up the rest of the interview here.http://www.ezehvalen.com/2016/05/veteran-actress-patience-ozokwor.html

According to TheCapital.Ng ''Those who are familiar with his antics believe that he can easily build an illustrious career doing stand-up comedy. This is because Fani-Kayode, like an unrepentant high school miscreant, is back on his grind again, telling people stories and lifting their hopes, so that he could dash them against the jagged rock of disappointment. Even in cell, Fani-Kayode is at his ridiculous best; by a radical twist of fate, the former aviation minister has turned pastor in the EFCC cell. The Capital findings revealed that Fani-Kayode started parading himself as a holy man of God immediately he was locked behind bars. He wakes fellow inmates up in the morning with worship and praise songs and he subjects them daily to intense prayer sessions by the hour. Besides his newfound vocation as a pastor, Fani-Kayode is also going round the jail cell promising fellow inmates that he will intervene in their favour and initiate strategic public relations efforts in their interest to repair their badly damaged reputation. Most of his newfound clients were reportedly detained by the EFCC in respect of several cases of fraud. It would be recalled that he was detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) since he became a person of interest in an N840 million misappropriation investigation. The EFCC arrested him two weeks ago for interrogation. Under intense scructiny, Fani-Kayode admitted to receiving the money which allegedly emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)'' http://www.ezehvalen.com/2016/05/femi-fani-kayode-now-pastor-in-efcc-cell.html
