Like I said earlier, not all laptops end up the same way that is why I would rather get a new one and get the warranty so I can dump it with the manufacturer should there be a problem. Have you tried using avast and some of the online tools by Windows to troubleshoot the computer yet? I don't know what you have done so far but I could tell you of some things I tried with mine to get it working faster. Another thing is you could get more memory for it since you said you bought it on sale 4 years ago, I am guessing the mem would be about 256 -512mb. Not sure you can upgrade but if you can clean it up. it might be some bug causing the problem you have with IE

From what you described there, I think you have software issues and not necessarily all hardware. I remember my brother's laptop had the same problem last year, and what I did was downloaded avast from online and basically gave the computer a clean boot and started removing all the junk that had accumulated on his system. That not only freed up memory but also removed the problem he had with IE back then. If you have already tossed the old. That is fine but please next time take it back to the manufacturer. You won't believe I bought a laptop in 2003 from ebay and I was still able to send it back to HP when I had a problem with it and HP replaced the bad parts and sent it back to me free. Acer and so many other companies do the same. I am an IT person so I can do the much that compusa can for cheaper that is why I have never really been a fan of the GEEK Program at the local stores. But I am a believer in manufacturers Warranty. I would rather buy that anyday than anything else.

1st Question. Where did you buy your acer? There have been millions around the world who have bought and still own acers  to make the machines number 2 in the world today. Maybe you need to start your investigation from where you bought it and if you REALLY have warranty from the company?? why didn't you return it and have them send you a better one? You do know that if you get a new computer that comes with manufacturers warranty and you are able to prove to them that the computer is the problem and not you trying to hack at it or something, they will send you a new one, no questions asked??

It is ok to buy used as long as you bear in mind that you are taking on the previous users problems and have to accept it is as is but when you buy new, you can confidently approach the company with problems to complain.

As soon as you notice the first couple of issues with a new computer, my advice, try every way you can to have it replaced before it gets worse.
