Luis Enrique refused to talk about his decision to leave out Jordi Alba or the fact there is just one Barcelona player in the Spain squad.

The coach stood down as Barcelona coach in the summer of 2017 and he was known to have had a bust up with Alba.

The Labour Party (LP) has pledged to deliver 16 million votes for President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election.

National Chairman of the party, Mike Omotosho, gave the assurance on Thursday in Ilorin at a public lecture and inauguration of Wards and Local Governments canvassers for re-election bid of Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The event organised by the Buhari/Osinbajo 2019 Project was attended by the Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture and the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara.

Omotosho, in a goodwill message at the event, said Buhari had done well in office.

He said his party will also work with the APC “to liberate Kwara from misrule by a clique led by one man”.

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court has ordered the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, to pay N11million as damages for the breach of fundamental rights of 11 Gombe State indigenes illegally detained by officers of the Nigerian Army.

This followed a fundamental right enforcement suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/777/2018, which the Applicants filed through their lawyer, Mr Mela Audu Nunghe.

The court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, declared the detention of the applicants, James Yusuf, Ishaya Ali Poshiya, Nehemiah Yohanna Poshiya, Husseini Poshiya, Hamma Poshiya, Yusuf Mafindi, Yila Boyi, James Bare, Ezekiel Dandaudu, Ali Ishaku and Ilya Bala since July 6, illegal and unconstitutional.


“The long detention and torture, without detention order, of the Applicants since July 6, 2018, by servants and agents of the 1st defendant, COAS, is illegal and unconstitutional and is a violation of the applicants’ fundamental rights as enshrined under Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999”, Vanguard quoted the Justice Ojukwu as saying.

“The 1st Respondent shall pay the sum of N11, 000 000 (Eleven Million Naira) only to the applicants (jointly) as damages for the breach of the applicants’ rights under Sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.

“No circumstances whatsoever may be invoked as a justification for torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. “All law enforcement officers must conform to accepted norms and rule of law in the discharge of their statutory duties.”

Actress Tonto Dikeh took to her IG page this afternoon to react to an allegation that she was involved with controversial South African pastor, Shepherd Bushiri.

In May this year, Tonto was in Bushiri's church, Enlightened Christian Gathering church, where she spoke at the church's Youth conference.


However, two weeks ago, certain IG accounts accused her of sleeping with Bushiri, collecting N18 million from him and refusing to give a dime to the person that connected her to the clergyman. The story was reported in some section of the media.

Primate Elijah Ayodele of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Lagos, has predicted how the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP can emerge as the winner of the 2019 election.

Speaking at the launch of his yearly book, titled ‘Warning To The Nations’, which is a compilation of his prophecies covering the 2018/2019 period, the Primate said if PDP wants to win 2019 election, Senate President, Bukola Saraki must be given the party’s ticket.

“I do not know Saraki neither do we have any link, politically nor otherwise. But he is the only man who can win anything for PDP. Bukola Saraki being president will change many things for good in Nigeria and their will be peace in Nigeria".

The anti-corruption war being waged by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration got a big boost on Tuesday after the removal from office of the former Director General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura. Already, the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has settled the rift between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, and the Department of State Services ,DSS, which had, under Daura, stood against Ibrahim Magu and his agency from investigating or arresting top security chiefs, suspected to have been involved in large scale cash movements.

Apart from standing against the confirmation of Magu as the substantive chairman of the EFCC, Daura also discredited the EFCC boss and blocked his agency from arresting former heads of the DSS and the National Intelligence Agency,NIA, in November lasts year.

According to Daura, no other  agency had any right to probe into the expenditure of the DSS, NIA and other security outfits, as doing so, was against the law establishing them. But Osinbajo on Tuesday cleared the way for all the officials of security agencies who had been fingered in the disappearance of about N80 billion last year, to be investigated and possibly charged to court.

A top source close to the Presidency confirmed to Saturday Vanguard that Osinbajo had given full support to the EFCC and the DSS to trace the whereabouts of the cash and retrieve it without further delay.

“It is in connection with the recovery of the huge cash that the Acting President met twice with the acting heads of DSS and EFCC for two consecutive days and ordered them to work together in order to trace and recover the money from whoever might have taken a penny out of it.

You can see that the two heads are actually moving to actualise the directive of the presidency and Nigerians will soon hear of the outcome of the synergy between the two agencies headed by Magu and Seifeya,” the source explained yesterday.

Top on the list of cash to be investigated by the DSS in conjunction with the EFCC is  $289,202,382 (N57.8bn) given to the National Intelligence Agency and another N20 billion, which was reportedly handed over to the DSS prior to the 2015 election.

However, while part of the  $289 million given to the NIA was later found in an Ikoyi apartment in Lagos, nothing has been heard of the cash given to the DSS, which prompted the EFCC to launch a probe last November but was stalled when Daura unleashed his men to chase away the EFCC operatives.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that Thursday’s invitation of the former head of the DSS, Mr. Ita Ekpenyong, by the EFCC was not an indictment on him but to enable him to share with EFCC vital information relating to cash left behind by him. It was gathered that Daura never wanted the information to be released to the EFCC while he was in charge given the fact that the cash reportedly left behind by Ekpenyong disappeared within a week of his departure from the agency.

On the other hand, the NIA cash, which the former head of the agency claimed was ‘given to him to carry out some unspecified security assignments’, is to be pursued to a logical conclusion and all those found culpable to face trial to serve as a deterrent.

Olumakaiye who made this call recently in Lagos during his enthronement as the new Bishop of Lagos, explained that some Nigerian leaders have gone out of fashion and cannot, therefore, design the architectural layout  that would bring about positive development in the country.

Our political leaders should try as much as possible to give the younger generation a chance. Let them also use their talents for the development of this nation. Some of our leaders are already out of fashion, so, we need fresh blood.

“We need fresh brains, we need people that can think within the contemporary world and that is the only way forward.

Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi a Nigerian politician and the former Chairman of the People's Democratic Party who was governor of Kaduna State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007, and was elected Senator for Kaduna North in April 2007, has cautioned the party against selecting an unpopular candidate for the 2019_presidential election. Makarfi spoke in Enugu yesterday while addressing supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the course of his tour of the South Eastern states to consult the people on his presidential ambition.

He said that he would restructure the country as it was the only solution to peace and development of the nation, which he said was now more divided than before along ethnic and religious lines before the All Progressives Congress, APC, took over the reigns of power in 2015.

He said that although PDP had bright chances to win the 2019 general elections, the party could fritter the chances away if selected an unpopular candidate for the elections and urged delegates for the party’s national convention to present a credible candidate for the presidential elections, pointing out that he had the capacity to bring peace to the country if elected.

Markafi further said that the hydra-headed socio-economic and political problems facing the nation would only be tackled squarely by someone who has the fear of God and respect for humanity.

According to him,”We should weigh our decision in choosing our candidate and our decision should be in tandem with the decision of majority of Nigerians. We should not be deceived by opinion polls.   Nigeria voters do not follow media ratings.

“We made a simple mistake when we tried somebody as our caretaker chairman and paid dearly for such a mistake. It will be worse if we choose an unpopular candidate based on social media ratings. So, we cannot afford to make mistakes in our choice.”

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yussuff Lasun spoke to newsmen on Thursday evening.

According to him, “the agenda will primarily be the presidential budget request to fund INEC’s operations for the 2019 election.”

The Federal lawmakers had been on recess since July 24, and were expected to resume in September.

The presidency had pleaded with National Assembly to reconvene to in order to treat some pressing national issues.

The party in a statement issued by its acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, yesterday, said: “A traitor will always be a traitor, however, the time and place. The Senate must do everything possible to put Dr. Saraki where he rightly belongs – the back seat.

‘’He is definitely not a fit and proper person to preside over the country’s upper and revered legislative house.”

In a sharp reaction, Saraki through his Special Adviser on Media, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said: “We can’t descend into the gutter with these characters. Apparently, they have not recovered from the shock of their Tuesday’s failed attempt to subvert democracy.”

According to the ruling party, in every democratic country, the position of the Senate President is one of the highest political offices one can attain.

“It is a position reserved for the best of the best, experienced and exemplary politicians who by their character and conduct in public offices, the younger generation look up to as role models,’’ the party stated.

It said in terms of exemplary personage, the reverse was the case in respect of Dr. Saraki who had been a dismal failure and had been involved in one controversy or the other, including budget padding, filibustering, legislative rascality, sabotage of matters of national interest, among other, criminalities too numerous to mention.

The party stated:  “Having suffered under the 16-year misrule of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Saraki will go down in our country’s history as the worst Senate President Nigeria has had the misfortune to have.

“Since his usurpation of the coveted seat, achieved through a wicked conspiracy with members of the opposition PDP, it has been from one controversy to another – the Code of Conduct trial for false declaration of assets; conspiracy with his deputy to fraudulently alter the rules of the Senate and links to the deadly armed robbers who wasted many lives in the Offa robbery attack.

“It is alleged that some of the robbery suspects were his political thugs used to rig elections; a common adage says: ‘Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.’

“Dr. Saraki is definitely not our good example for political leadership. All over the world, the leadership of the legislature is provided by the political party with the majority members. But Dr. Saraki would in the absence of many members of his former party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, connive and conspire with members of the opposition PDP to emerge Senate President, and in the process trade off the Deputy Senate President position to the opposition PDP, a political betrayal and treachery even the devil would be envious of.

“Even at this time he has defected to the opposition PDP, and with APC still in the majority in the Senate, Dr. Saraki still has the impudence to present himself as the Senate President. Political ambition should be made of nobler stuff.”

Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom has reacted to the sack of the Director-General of the Department of State Security Services, DSS, Lawal Daura.


Osinbajo, on Tuesday, fired Daura after a meeting with him and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The two security chiefs, who arrived Aso Rock at different times, were to update the acting president on security developments, including the invasion of the National Assembly by security officials.


Reacting to Daura’s dismissal, Ortom praised Osinbajo for taking such step.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, Ortom called on the presidency to look into other security agencies the way it sacked Daura.

The statement read in part: “The sack of the DSS Director General was long expected, following the manner he ran the Service.


“It was necessary to also look into operations of other security agencies to save the country from the current wave of impunity.”

Governor Ortom had earlier today, condemned the invasion of the National Assembly by men of the Nigerian Police Force and the DSS.

The Federal Government on Monday accused the Senate President, Bukola Saraki of laying the “foundation” for the gale of defections across the country.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said Saraki laid “the foundation” for defection the day he became Senate President.

Speaking during a visit to the Authority Newspapers in Abuja, the Minister noted that some politicians defected for “political calculation and personal reasons’’.

He insisted that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was not perturbed by the gale of defections, especially by members of the National Assembly.

“We did not just start noticing this, the foundation for it was laid the day Dr Bukola Saraki became the Senate President.

“In every part of the world, when a party has the majority in Parliament, the party decides who is going to be the leader of the parliament.

“This is a case where the party was still waiting for the President to resolve the issue when Saraki, from the back door, emerged as Senate President.

“From then, we have known, because his emergence was illegal and against the wish of the party,’’ he said.

The minister said that to make the matter worse, Saraki made a deal with the opposition PDP, by conceding the Deputy Senate President’s position.

He said, “In the last two years, the National Assembly has been behaving as if the opposition is in control. We have a Senate President that is so hostile to the government.

“For three years, budgets are passed only in June. As I speak today, there has been no disbursement on capital project in 2018 budget.

“Critical appointments are also being delayed and the government is being blackmailed every day.

“I have never seen in history, where a leader of parliament will announce the defection of 15 members from his party.

“The proper thing is, if you are loyal to your party, you put stumbling blocks on such defection.”

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted to the impeachment notice served on the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

But in a swift reaction, the governor, who recently decamped from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the eight lawmakers lacked the constitutional powers to remove him from office.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has offered Carl Ikeme a role in the technical crew of the Super Eagles, following his premature retirement from active football.

On Friday, Ikeme announced his decision to hang his gloves as he continues his successful recovery from Leukaemia, which was first diagnosed a year ago.

During his career, the 32-year-old won 10 caps for Nigeria and kept seven clean sheets.

And the NFF, in a statement signed by its General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, are offering to sponsor Ikeme’s coaching course before drafting him into Gernot Rohr’s backroom.

“Carl Ikeme was an embodiment of absolute dedication, commitment and patriotic fervour in the games that he played for the Super Eagles.

Following the attack on Senator Dino Melaye by unknown gunmen in the Gwagwalada area of Abuja Thursday morning, it has been confirmed that the Senator has been abducted.

Melaye’s abduction was disclosed by Senator representing Bayelsa East in the National Assembly, Ben Bruce, via his Twitter handle.

In a tweet, Bruce disclosed that Melaye’s brother, Moses informed him of the lawmaker’s abduction.

“I have just been informed by Moses Melaye, @dino_melaye’s brother, that Dino has been abducted by unknown persons in a Toyota Sienna that blocked their car and overpowered them on their way to Kogi to answer to Dino’s court case. Lets be on the watch out. Will keep you updated,” he tweeted.

Melaye was reported to have been attacked by armed men in Gwagwalada area of Abuja.

Another member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly representing Lere/Bula constituency, Honourable Aminu Tukur, late Wednesday dumped his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Addressing journalists, the lawmaker aspiring for Bauchi South senatorial seat in the coming bye-election explained that his decision to quit the party was as a result of the party’s failure to conduct primary election through a direct system that would allow all card-carrying members to vote as promised by the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

According to him, all aspirants had completed preparation for the exercise but were later, around 5 pm summoned for a meeting at the party’s secretariat where they were informed that the primary election would be conducted by delegates whom he did not trust.

” Like me, I didn’t know the delegates designated for the primary election. How sure am I that I will win since they were smuggled in by other factions of the party. I better join a party that would be fair to me,” said Tukur.

Already, four political parties including PDP, GPN, NNPP and SDP had so far conducted their primary elections for the vacant position.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Wednesday that 48 political parties nominated candidates for the September 22 governorship election in Osun.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at the swearing-in of two Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Yakubu said that the commission was currently processing the nomination forms.

“Our preparations for the Osun governorship election continued in earnest.

“Nomination of candidates closed yesterday (Tuesday) in line with the timetable and schedule of activities released by the commission in October, 2017.

“A record number of 48 political parties have nominated candidates for the election. The commission is currently processing the nomination forms,” Yakubu said.

The two new RECs were Garba Madami and Ahmed Mahmud.

Yakubu said that ‎with the new RECs, INEC now had the full complement of 12 National Commissioners and “all but two RECs”.

He expressed optimism that the new RECs would bring their knowledge and experience to bear in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria.

The Chairman advised them ‎to quickly familiarise themselves with the relevant provision of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended), INEC’s plans, guidelines and regulations as well as established processes and procedures.

“On the practical side of your work, you must immediately interact with your staff and pay attention to their welfare.

“Also visit the local government offices in your states and assess the various facilities and critical requirements for the 2019 general elections, ranging from the recruitment and training of ad hoc staff, logistics and more.

“Within the confines of the law, I encourage you to be imaginative in responding to the needs of the electorate and add value to the electoral process.

“In doing so, always seek for clarification and, where necessary, the approval of the commission.”

He said that Madami would be deployed to Kwara while Mahmud would work in Kebbi state.

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to hold a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) senators following Tuesday's mass defection at both the upper chamber and the House of Representatives.

Fifteen APC senators quit the ruling party on Tuesday, with 35 more following suit at the lower chamber to leave the APC at risk of losing majority control at the two chambers.

Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, has been arraigned before an Abuja High Court in Apo for attempted suicide, attempt to escape from lawful custody and damage of police property.

The lawmaker was arraigned on Wednesday, barely 24 hours after he defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dino pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge preferred against him, and was subsequently granted bail in sum of N5 million and two sureties in like sum.

Justice Silvanus Orji, the presiding judge, also ordered that the sureties must be directors in the Civil Service and be residents of the Abuja.

The prosecuting counsel, Alex Izinyon, had told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences on April 24.

He said the defendant, while being conveyed in a police vehicle to Lokoja, forced his way out and escaped.

Mr Izinyon further said that the defendant sat on the ground, holding a substance in one hand threatening to drink it to kill himself so that he can put the police officers in trouble.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant broke the glass of the vehicle with his elbow and caused damage to police property.

He said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 148,153,173,231, 326 and 327 of the Penal Code.

The counsel to Mr Melaye, Mike Ozekhome, prayed the court to allow the bail granted to the defendant at the Magistrates’ Court Wuse on the same charges to continue.

The prosecution opposed the application, adding that bail is at the discretion of the court.

The judge upheld the submission of the prosecution and gave the new bail conditions.

He said that the case would be assigned to another judge by the chief judge after the vacation.

Dino Melaye has been in a running battle with the Nigeria Police Force. He was earlier arraigned at a Lokoja court for attempt to mislead an officer of the law among other criminal offences.
