I read on a credible site that Xiaomi store which is connected to their whole cloud system kindoff mistakenly uploaded an old beta version of Whatsapp. I think they've removed it and an update should be in the works.
If the issue persist, find the latest version of GBWhatsApp and install till further notice. (I'm not sure this particular suggestion will rectify the ish though)

Hello sirs , I find it difficult to establish WhatsApp on my MI max2 Fone. Anytime I get to d point where I need to input my number for verification , it keep saying something is wrong with your version of whatapp and I Shud download d latest version from playstore ,which I ve done severally. Pls I need assistance.

Mind u, eloquent, fluent and good command of English is not tantamount to good governance neither is it equivalent to optimum performance.
