Tanker accident in Badagry leaves one dead One charred body was reportedly recovered by police officers from a crash involving a tanker loaded with petroleum products, which also left 22 vehicles burnt, at Adodo Junction by Mowo Bus Stop, along the Lagos Badagry Expressway, yesterday. According to police authorities, the cause of the accident, which occurred around 4pm, is yet to be ascertained. Frank Mba, the spokesperson for the Lagos Police Command, stated that rescue efforts by the police and other law enforcement agencies began within minutes of the inferno. He also advised commuters along that axis not to panic as the police is on top of the situation. In a similar development, on Sunday, at Ibafo, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a multiple auto crash and inferno, according to eyewitness, resulted in the death of ten people, and several more injured, with over 19 vehicles burnt. Residents of the area have urged the Ogun State government to remove the petrol tankers usually parked on both sides of the expressway. According to Silvanus John, who escaped through the window of a commercial bus that was involved in the yesterday’s accident, the crash was caused by a tanker that was trying to park on the roadside. “The first tanker was trying to turn,” he said. “It wanted to park, but it did not give sign so the Jeep that was behind hit it. Then the second tanker was coming; it tried to dodge the Jeep, it went and hit the culvert; then some other cars came and hit themselves there. Then the third tanker was now coming with fuel; it now came and knocked the second tanker and now brought out fire and there was no way for the other cars to come out. One man that survived said his children were inside, so we started calling fire service. They didn’t come in time.” According to him, no emergency rescue agency came to the scene of the accident, apart from the Red Cross who helped to put out the fire on the cars. “I’m begging the government to see what they can do about this matter because it is getting too much,” said Kolawole Kehinde, another resident of Ibafo. “A lot of lives have been lost now. Look at what happened yesterday; likewise the other time. Let them assist us. We don’t want to be dying anyhow. If they want to kill us, they should announce to Nigerians.” |

El-Rufai backs Ribadu’s presidential candidacy By Ngozi Sams and Tom Akor August 19, 2010 11:35PM Print print Email email Share Share Former minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasir el-Rufai, has said that Nuhu Ribadu, former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, has all it takes to become the president of Nigeria. Speaking at a leadership forum for the youth yesterday in Abuja, Mr el-Rufai blamed our nation’s economic failure on bad leadership. “Anyone that has been in the corridors of power in those days should retire and allow people like my brother, Nuhu Ribadu, to rule,” he said. “I am not campaigning for anybody, but you know where my heart is.” He lamented that young people have not participated fully in the politics of the nation, except in their use as thugs for political parties. He noted that since 2006, when the last voter registration exercise took place, about 16 million people have reached the voting age of 18. “It was young people that got Obama elected in America,” he said. “Young people should do it in Nigeria and elect their own Obama.” Pat Utomi, founder of the Lagos Business School, agreed that a failure of leadership in past administrations was the nation’s foremost problem. “What this means is that our future does not lie in past leadership, otherwise, we will have the same result in our future as we had in our past.” |

Cross River approves N252 million for information system By Modey Peters August 20, 2010 02:17AM In an effort to fast track the implementation of Cross River State Geographic Information System (CRGIS), the state executive council at its meeting, approved $1.7m (about N252 million) for the services of consultants for the project. Bassey Oqua, the lands and housing development commissioner, said an American firm, International Land System Incorporated, in partnership with Teq Bridge Nigeria Limited, was chosen as the preferred bidder for the job, after a technical and financial review of the four companies that applied for the job. Mr. Oqua said that GIS, when fully operational, will address all challenges arising from land administration and management, pointing out that the ratification is the component of the phase II of the implementation process, which started with the inauguration of a steering committee headed by the state governor, Liyel Imoke. The committee’s assignment is to quicken the process and thus meet contractual agreements on delivery of certificate of occupancy in six months. Housing too On the expansion of the Urban Street light project to Federal Housing Estate and State Housing Estates and Calabar south local government area to enhance the aesthetics and security of Calabar, the state capital, Bassey Ekefre, the commissioner for works, disclosed that N2.7 billion has also been approved by the council in favour of Lileker Nigeria Limited to effect the installation, with a three and half years moratorium at N64, 000 monthly payment. Mr. Ekefre added that the contractor has already been mobilised to site, as work is expected to commence soon, adding that with a new power plant at New Secretariat to power the street lights which were hitherto fed from Tinapa power plant, there is a guarantee of uninterrupted power supply to the streets. Rosemary Achonwa, the special adviser, mortgage finance, said that the state, in its quest to provide affordable houses to the citizenry, secured N1.5 billion from the Federal Government to boost the development process, while Cross River State Property and Investment Ltd. (CROSPIL) is working on a modality to disburse the fund for development. Ms Achonwa said the state government, in addition to the Akpabuyo Housing Estate which physical work commences next month, has acquired 40 hectares of land at Odukpani to further expand the development, stressing that with the recent enactment of the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Law 2010 by the state, government is obliged to define accurately a housing delivery standard for Cross River citizens. |
