Fifty-four UNIZIK students have been awarded Chinese Government scholarship for further studies in China. This was made known at the Confucius Institute graduation ceremony which was held recently at the Institute Center, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The scholarship award gives some of the beneficiaries opportunity to complete any degree programme of their choice in leading universities in China while for some they will just spend one year for chinese language proficiency. In his opening speech, Teacher Wu Qunbin recognized and appreciated the support of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, FAS and the entire Governing Council of the University. He also congratulated the graduating students for the achievement while promising that the Institute will continue to do all in its power to ensure that students come out successful in the programme. According to him, the platform has helped create good relations between the Chinese and Nigerian government. In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ahaneku, FAS expressed appreciation to the Chinese Government for the scholarship award which, according to him, is not a new development, as some of the University’s students are already in China and he had traveled several times to monitor them. Prof. Ahaneku also congratulated the graduating students for successfully completing the Chinese Proficiency Programme while advising the scholarship beneficiaries to promote the good image of the University and Nigeria in China, to distinguish themselves and shun all vices that can mar the image of the University and Nigeria. He added that they should always uphold the University’s motto: Discipline, Self Reliance and Excellence. According to him, the milestone that has been achieved through the Institute has helped elevate the image and reputation of the University and the country as a whole, and has encouraged the advancement of humanity. Prof. Ahaneku also wished the other non-benefiting undergraduate students of the Institute success and also advised them to put in more effort in their studies so that they can also benefit from the Institute Scholarship Scheme. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has stated that it will embark on a nationwide strike from August 22, as a result of the Federal Government refusal to honor its agreement with it. ASUP President, Mr Usman Dutse, who disclosed this on Thursday at the end of the Zone A emergency meeting of the union in Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria, said the union will commence the industrial action, if the Federal Government fails to honour the agreement it reached with it in 2013. He said that since the suspension of the protracted strike in 2014, the government is yet to address some of the core issues that necessitated the strike. Dutse urged the government to as a matter of urgency, address these issues in order to avoid another nationwide industrial action. A communique read by the Zone A Coordinator of ASUP, Kabir Yunusa, noted that no significant progress has been made by government in resolving the issues. The statement highlighted the issues to include the non-implementation of Needs Assessment Report of 2014, non-payment of salaries in many state-owned institutions, delay in the review of the Polytechnic Act and poor funding of polytechnics among other demands. The ASUP President said that despite giving the government enough time when it came on board last year to settle down and address all pending issues, the present administration has showed no concern about the plight of lecturers, whose salaries were being reduced or owed in most federal and state polytechnics. The Management of University of Lagos (UNILAG), disclosed on Monday that it will go ahead with its screening of prospective candidates for admission into the 2016/2017 academic session as scheduled. The institution’s Deputy Registrar, (Information), Mr Toyin Adebule, said this in an interview with the news men in Lagos. Adebule gave the university’s position against the backdrop of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) withdrawing the list of recommended candidates for admission, earlier sent to the various universities. JAMB in the statement signed by its Head of Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, stated that the withdrawal was to ensure that the senate of each of the universities performs its statutory functions. News agency of Nigeria reports that UNILAG had, last month, announced that it would begin screening candidates, who chose the institution as their first choice with a cut-off point of 200 and above, between Wednesday Aug. 3, 2016 and Aug. 24, 2016. ”We want to inform the public that our screening, for candidates that will be admitted for the 2016/17 academic session, will still hold scheduled from Aug. 3, 2016 to Aug. 24, 2016. “It is true that JAMB had sent a list to us, which it had considered as those who met our cut-off point. “It is this same list that it had withdrawn to allow the universities carry out their admission process as required by the law setting up their senates. “There are statutory functions meant for all university senates, among which admissions is part one. “It is only after selecting the candidates for admission that the senate refers the list to JAMB for confirmation in line with the admission criteria of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states. “And so, it is only proper for JAMB to have taken this step, realising that it had taken over the job of the universities’ senates,’’ he told NAN. Adebule, however, added that the withdrawal of the list did not interfere with UNILAG’s proposed plan to screen its candidates. He reiterated that candidates would be screened based on the authenticity of their results and course of combination. Disclosing this in a statement on Monday, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said the extension was to allow more potentially qualified candidates participate, as well as to expand the opportunity base around the country. The programme which had initially commenced on June 12 was billed to close on July 25, but with the extension, it will close by the ending of August. The statement read, “However, being very keen on keeping its promise of empowering and uplifting young Nigerians by improving their livelihood and creating opportunities such as this (in an as inclusive and diverse manner), the Federal Government is providing an additional grace period for more young Nigerians to access the N-Power opportunity. “The new deadline for the receipt of applications is now Wednesday, August 31, 2016. “N-Power is one of the initiatives of the N500bn President Muhammadu Buhari’s Social Investment Programme designed to empower young Nigerians with life-long skills to find or create work. “The N-Power programme is segmented into three: N-Power Teachers Corps Agriculture and Health related jobs; N-Power Knowledge for ICT and N-Power Build for building services and artisanal training “N-Power is targeted at young Nigerians aged between 18 and 35 and is aimed at enlisting a total of 600,000 young Nigerians in phases, and under different sectors, in the largest capacity development and empowerment effort yet in the country.” The Special Assistant to the Vice President noted that the extension in deadline will afford interested persons who have not yet applied, an opportunity to do so. He said, “This will also allow those yet to complete the application process to ensure they see the process through as incomplete applications will not be processed. “To apply, simply log on to www.npower.gov.ng and register for any one of the three sub-programmes. “Please note that applications may be subject to other criteria which can be found on the N-Power website. Any prospective applicant, who has any challenge with uploading supporting documents unto the Portal because of the size of the files, should attach these documents in a mail transmitted to support@npower.gov.ng “After the Application portal closes, there will be a verification, testing and selection process before successful applicants are enlisted in phases as the specific programme design may necessitate,” Akande added. The Joint Admission and matriculation Board (JAMB) in a statement released yesterday said it has withdrawn the list of recommended candidates for admission earlier sent to the tertiary institutions. Besides “The earlier list was sent to help fast track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of institutions also conduct their admission. “Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise.
