Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have detained a 35-year-old lady, Chidinma Chinenye Agbazue after she was caught attempting to export 20 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 10.70 kilograms concealed in African salad popularly called Abacha and dried vegetables to Doha, Qatar through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos state.

NDLEA officers at the Lagos airport working in partnership with men of the Department of State Security had on Thursday 28th March intercepted Chidinma, an outbound passenger from Lagos to Doha, on Qatar Airways during clearance of passengers at the screening point of terminal 11 of the MMIA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Chidinma was based in Qatar but returned to Nigeria last December for Christmas celebration. She said preparatory to her return to Doha, she was lodged at Club Dice Hotel in Ikotun area of Lagos where the consignment was handed over to her for trafficking to the Arab country.

PoliticsSoldiers Killed At Okuama Community To Be Buried On Wednesday by chisomkachy(op): 11:57am On Mar 26, 2024

The Burial Ceremony of Nigerian Army Personnel killed-in-action at Okuama Community, Delta State has now been scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, 2024 at National Cemetary, Abuja.

The burial is billed to hold by 3:00pm.

The President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be the Special Guest of Honour at the event, a source who prefers anonymity said.

The killings have been condemned by many stakeholders with President Bola Tinubu vowing that the perpetrators will not go unpunished.

PoliticsKuriga School Children: It's Not Important if Ransom Was Paid Or Not - Gov Sani by chisomkachy(op): 9:38pm On Mar 25, 2024
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has stated that the argument over the payment of ransom to free the abducted Kuriga students is irrelevant.

The governor disclosed this while speaking on Channel Television’s Sunday Politics, adding that what was important was the fact that the government had been able to rescue all of them unhurt.

The schoolchildren were abducted from LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School, Kuriga, about four weeks ago but the Defence Headquarters, on Saturday, said they had been rescued.

There were rumours that the government paid ransom to the kidnappers for the release of the schoolchildren, an insinuation rubbished by Governor Sani.

He said: “What is more important today is that our children are back home. Most of those permutations are not necessary. If your child is kidnapped, will you be sitting down and talking about how he was released?

“For me, what is more important is that those children are back home. Their parents are extremely happy and what is important to them is to reunite with their children.

“But some people who have no business with the situation are the ones coming out with some irresponsible permutations about whether ransom is being paid, whether someone had gone into the kinetic or non-kinetic approach. What is important to us in Kaduna is that the children are back home.”

The governor explained that the government handled the Kuriga schoolchildren abduction very discreetly, adding: “We tried as much as possible not to jeopardise the lives of the innocent children. Some people at some point wanted to politicize the whole incident.”

He said contrary to reports, 137 and not 287 schoolchildren were abducted on March 7, 2024, from Kuriga in the Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

“I don’t want to join issues with anyone in terms of numbers. What is more important to me is the safe return of the children. Today, I am happy that they are back safely, in high spirits, but those numbers were just figments of some people’s imagination,” the governor stated.

The gunmen who kidnapped on the Edo state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Aziegbemi, on Sunday, March 24, contacted his family, and demanded N500 million ransom, after ten days in captivity.

A member of Aziegbemi’s family, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, was silent on what PDP leaders in Nigeria, including Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki, were doing to raise the ransom.

However, Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police (SP), stated that the command was not aware of the huge ransom demanded by the kidnappers.

Aziegbemi was kidnapped at 11 p.m., near his personal residence, off Country Home Road, Government Reservation Area (GRA) Benin, after attending a political meeting at Government House in the state capital.

PoliticsHardship, Killings: Tinubu Cancels 72nd Birthday Celebration by chisomkachy(op): 3:12pm On Mar 24, 2024
STATE HOUSE PRESS STATEMENT

*PRESIDENT TINUBU'S 72nd BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 29, 2024*

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will turn 72 on Friday March 29, 2024. The day will be another important milestone in his life as a leader and a statesman.

During an auspicious occasion as this, it is customary for family members, friends and associates to celebrate him in different ways.

As the leader of our country, President Tinubu in deference to this challenging times will not host any birthday event and does not want any of his associates and numerous well-wishers across the country to organise any celebratory event on his behalf or in his name.

President Tinubu appreciates the honour of being the leader of Africa’s leading nation at this time and he is working very hard to make life better for the generality of our people.

According to him, because of the present mood of the nation and recent killing of the officers and men of our Army and Police in Delta State and recent spate of security breaches by criminal elements in different parts of Nigeria, there should be no form of birthday event and placing of birthday goodwill advertorial messages in newspapers. Goodwill messages should not be placed on radio and television stations too.

President Tinubu enjoins friends and associates who may wish to place goodwill advertorials to kindly donate the money to charity organisations of their choice in his name.

Although the President appreciates the gallantry of our armed forces in freeing our children kidnapped in Kuriga, Kaduna State and in Sokoto State, he will use the opportunity of his birthday to reflect and re-dedicate himself to the task of building a more stable, more secure, virile, prosperous and united Nigeria.

EducationTinubu Transmits Students Loan Bill 2024 To House Of Reps For Enactment by chisomkachy(op): 3:47pm On Mar 14, 2024
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has written to the House of Representatives seeking repeal of the Students Loans Act 2023 and enactment of the Students Loan Bill 2024.

Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen read the letter transmitting the Students Loans Repeal and Enactment Bill from the president during Thursday’s plenary.

The president in his letter explained that the request for repeal of the Students Loans Act 2023 and a fresh enactment is to address some challenges with the earlier Act and to enhance the implementation of the students loan scheme by his administration.

The letter reads, “Pursuant to Section 58(2) of the Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). I forward, herewith, The Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024 for the kind consideration of the House of Representatives.

“The Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re- Enactment) Bill, 2024 seeks to enhance the implementation of the Higher Education Student Loan Scheme by addressing challenges related to the management structure of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF), applicant eligibility requirements, loan purpose, funding sources and disbursement and repayment procedures.

“Whilst hoping that this submission will receive the usual expeditious consideration of the House of Representatives, please accept, Rt. Honourable Speaker, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Recall that in June 2023, Tinubu signed a Bill to start a Students Loan Fund that would give interest-free loans to Nigerians for higher education.

Last year, Tinubu had promised that the scheme would take off with effect from January 2024.

However, the implementation is yet to take off, triggering criticisms.

On Wednesday, Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, (TETFund), Sonny Echono, had said the delay in the implementation of the bill was due to some observations raised by the National Assembly.

Stakeholders have raised issues around the Students Loans scheme, especially as it has to do with eligibility requirements, funding sources, disbursement and repayment procedures, among others.

PoliticsHouse Of Reps Blasts Bello El-Rufai For Denying Receiving SUV by chisomkachy(op): 5:37pm On Mar 13, 2024
A lawmaker representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, has been cautioned to desist from misleading the general public by denying ever receiving the recently distributed official vehicles for members, SaharaReporters has gathered.

El-Rufai, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Banking Regulations, had appeared on a podcast programme of Channels Television presenter, Seun Okinbaloye, known as 'MIC ON'; where he denied receiving the SUV.

The lawmaker also said some of his colleagues did not receive the much-criticized SUVs, even though he acknowledged that many of his other colleagues received them.

But in an internal memo leaked to this newspaper on Wednesday, the Deputy Spokesperson for the House, Hon. Philip Agbese, cautioned the Kaduna lawmaker not to "grandstand or pontificate on contentious matters in a way that would bring the image of the parliament to disrepute".

The leaked memo revealed that "every Member of the 10th House of Representatives has received their vehicle", even though it said, "these vehicles remain the property of the House of Representatives and are to aid Honourable Members in the discharge of their duties".

The internal memo addressed to members of the House, which is titled, 'Clarification on Vehicle Allocation', reads as follows:

"Our attention has been drawn to a trending video excerpt from an interview, wherein one of our distinguished colleagues, Hon. Bello El-Rufai, claimed that some members, including himself, rejected their operational vehicles allocated to them.

"It has become necessary to state that, this is totally false and inaccurate. From our checks with the House Committee on House Services, every member of the 10th House of Representatives has received their vehicle.

"The House, therefore, cautions Hon. El-Rufai to desist from further misinforming the public or attempting to set his colleagues up for public ridicule. As a House, we are advised not to grandstand or pontificate on contentious matters in a way that would bring the image of the parliament to disrepute. Hence, the need for caution in public discourse, especially now that the 10th House of Representatives is earning the trust of Nigerians.

"We take this opportunity to clarify that all Honourable Members have had their vehicles duly allocated to them. These vehicles remain the property of the House of Representatives and are to aid Honourable Members in the discharge of their duties.

PoliticsRivers: More Pro-Wike Supporters Collapse Structure For Fubara by chisomkachy(op): 11:11am On Mar 11, 2024
Barely four days after Achor Nna, the councillor representing the ward of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, resigned his position to support Governor Siminalayi Fubara, another group of Wike’s supporters have collapsed their structure for the Rivers governor.

The latest to join Fubara’s camp is a group of 12 men who were Local Government Coordinators of Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI), a political pressure group that was instrumental in the massive mobilization at the grassroots for the FCT minister while contesting the governorship elections in Rivers State since 2015.

The coordinators represent Ogu/Bolo, Port Harcourt City, Opobo/Nkoro, Gokana, Bonny, Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Oyigbo, Asari-Toru, Akuku-Toru and Obio/Akpor local government area where the Wike comes from.

The former coordinator in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Collins Onunwo, who led the delegation to the Governor at the Government House in Port Harcourt, said they decided to resign their leadership positions in GDI to protect, defend, and promote the interest of Rivers State and its people.

Onunwo, who was a former caretaker chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, said the group has no option but to support Fubara, having freely given their votes and mandate to him, a decision that has been affirmed by the Supreme Court.

He pledged the determination and dedication of the former GDI coordinators to the success of the policies and programmes of the present administration.

“We want the public, Rivers people, and all Nigerians to know that GDI is the group founded by the former governor and now Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike. That group brought him to power in 2015 and supported his ambition in 2019. That group is his strength,” he said.

“But today, we and our supporters have decided we are no longer members of GDI. The reason is simple: we want to be with Rivers people. Rivers’ interest is paramount. In 2012, GDI’s interest was to protect, defend, and promote our brother-in-law, President Goodluck Jonathan, because of our mother and sister, Dame Patience Jonathan; and it yielded good dividends to the state.

“Through that struggle, our brother, Chief Nyesom Wike, became governor in 2015; and in 2019, when Abuja politicians said he will not return for a second tenure, we all rallied around him and defended our votes, and he served for eight years.

“Today, Rivers’ interest is to protect our votes that brought in Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Executive Governor of Rivers State in the most credible, fair, and violence-free election. We have come to join millions of Rivers women, youths, elders, and other well-meaning people who insist that we must protect our votes to sustain democracy. Our concern is that we voted for PDP and Sir Siminalayi Fubara, and we must protect that mandate with all we have”.

He further cautioned those fighting against the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr Edison Ehie, to retrace their steps, or prepare to face the wrath of Rivers youths, women, and elders.

Also speaking, former Public Relations Officer of GDI ACF, Christian Abu, said that the simple message is that the ex-GDI coordinators just resigned to get Simplified, clarifying that GDI has been the vehicle and political structure for the successes recorded in the previous elections in the state.

Abu said, “Getting Simplified means that the strategies, movement, and vehicle that always conveyed electoral successes to the previous administrations have brought the same support to the Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

“Our support for him today is total, and unwavering. We are committed and dedicated to his victory and mandate. We had sleepless nights to achieve this victory, and we have come to protect the mandate freely given to Sir Siminalayi Fubara under the platform of the PDP,” he added.

At the meeting were the State Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Chijioke Ihunwo; and Special Adviser to the Governor on Power, Solomon Abel-Eke; among others.

PoliticsOnanuga To Ningi: Tinubu Operating On N28.7t Budget, NASS Jacked It Up by chisomkachy(op): 9:36pm On Mar 10, 2024
STATE HOUSE PRESS STATEMENT

THE FACTS ABOUT 2024 BUDGET

Following the false claims made by Senator Abdul Ningi, representing Bauchi Central, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government is operating two versions of the 2024 budget, we consider it appropriate to inform Nigerians that there is no truth whatsoever in the allegation.

Acting under the banner of Northern Senators' Forum, Senator Ningi, falsely claimed in an interview he granted BBC Hausa Service, that the National Assembly debated and passed N25 Trillion as 2024 budget and not the N28.7 Trillion that is being implemented by the Federal Government.

To begin with, President Tinubu on November 29, 2023 presented a budget of N27.5 Trillion to the joint session of the National Assembly made up of N9.92 Trillion recurrent expenditure, Debt Service N8.25 Trillion and Capital Expenditure N8.7 Trillion.

This was widely reported. He did not present a budget of N25 Trillion.

Contrary to the strange view expressed by Senator Ningi, there was no way the Senate could have debated and passed a N25 Trillion budget that was not presented to the National Assembly.

We don't expect a ranking Senator not to pay due attention to details before making wild claims.

It is also important to let Nigerians know that the budget that President Tinubu signed into law on January 1, 2024 as passed by the National Assembly was N28.7 Trillion.

The National Assembly, in its wisdom, increased the amount proposed by the Executive by N1.2 Trillion.

In the spirit of democracy which allows give and take, President Tinubu didn't withhold his assent to the Appropriation Bill as passed by the National Assembly. We want to stress that if the budget figure was increased and made to be different from what the Executive proposed, it was the National Assembly that jacked it up in exercise of its power of appropriation.

On the uncharitable claim that the 2024 budget was anti-North, we found such position as canvassed by Senator Ningi as too far-fetched and unbecoming of a leader of his status.

President Tinubu is leading a government that is fair and equitable to every part and segment of Nigeria. In terms of funding, distribution of capital and priority projects, the 2024 Appropriation Act was not skewed against any section of the country.

The North as an integral part of the country is well covered in all areas, from security to agriculture, healthcare to education, and other important infrastructure such as roads, rail, dams, power and irrigation projects to support all year-round agriculture.

It is concerning that a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria can employ such primordial antics to fuel divisive rhetoric at a time well-meaning Nigerians are joining hands with President Tinubu to raise the spirit of national cohesion, unity and inclusive politics.

We want to use this opportunity to commend Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman Senate Committee on Media and Publicity for setting the record straight. We also commend Senators Steve Sunday Karimi (Kogi), Titus Tartenger Zam (Benue) and Kaka Sheu (Borno) for their forthrightness and for coming out against the misrepresentation of facts by Senator Ningi.

President Tinubu is a firm believer in the rule of law and constitutional democracy. As an avowed democrat, he will not engage and indulge in any unconstitutional action or act in any manner that assaults the Constitution of Nigeria by operating any budget outside the one approved by the National Assembly, which he dutifully signed into law.

We want to state categorically that the only 2024 budget that is being implemented is the N28.7 Trillion budget passed by the National Assembly and signed by the President.

Included in the budget are statutory transfers to the Judiciary, National Assembly, Tetfund and others.

PoliticsFr Obinyan to Obaseki: 'Be the big brother, call off the impeachment on Shaibu' by chisomkachy(op): 9:23pm On Mar 10, 2024
A Catholic priest in Benin, Edo State, Very Rev. Fr. (Dr.) Andrew Obinyan, has appealed to Governor Godwin Obaseki to leave his deputy, Philip Shaibu, alone to deal with his issues.

Obinyan who stated this in an open letter to Obaseki on Sunday in Benin, noted that impeaching Shaibu under the Governor’s watch will be perceived as a sting of “betrayal”.

The cleric who noted that Shaibu was one of Obaseki’s rock bottom foundation and support during his lowest ebb, urged the Governor to prevail on the state legislators to discontinue the impeachment process.

Between Empathy and Impeachment for your Deputy.

“I make a humble and passionate appeal to Your Excellency, Governor Godwin Obaseki. I entreat you because I regard you as a civilized and enlightened man.

“May it not be in the annals of Edo political history that there was once a Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, impeached under your watch for his aspiration. It will be perceived as a sting of “betrayal” and it will invariably redefine “Loyalty and Aspiration” as antithetical.

“Please, don’t get me wrong because this is far more polite than you can imagine. This is the kernel of my entreaty: Leave your deputy alone to deal with his issues and resolve them without initiating impeachment. Reconciliation is always a prosperous option. Listen to your kind heart.

“I am not insinuating he must be Governor. Yet, we cannot justify an impeachment without putting a wedge on the path of positive advancement in other spheres of life.

“Please, Mr. Governor, talk to Edo State House of Assembly to discontinue the impeachment process. Honourable Members must ensure that legislation prohibits any move that bears the semblance of retaliation. Do yourselves a favour because you don’t know the next victim in sudden political twists and turns.

“Dear Mr. Governor, here is the point: Bear with Comrade Philip Shaibu, not for his sake but for the sake of your own indomitable spirit. What I see in you is what I see in your Deputy – a resolute spirit. We often say only God can determine who gets power. This saying should not be personalized and meaningful only when it is to our advantage.

“When you were at your lowest point and facing your political trials, your rock bottom foundation was the support from Edo people and your deputy, who you used to call your brother.

“I am pleading. Your silence has been golden. Continue to be a big brother to him. Feel for the number two man who seeks power so passionately and determinedly without your support. A man whose level of determination makes him literally stressed out, worried, burdened, spending strength and resources, deserves empathy not impeachment.

PoliticsReports Of A Coup Scare Is False, Heinous Act Of Disinformation - FG by chisomkachy(op): 9:04pm On Feb 27, 2024
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has debunked a news report of a so-called coup scare in the country, stressing that the report is unequivocally false, and is a heinous act of disinformation.

He said the report is the figment of the warped imagination of detractors, whose malicious intent is to destabilize the country and undermine the present administration.

Idris said the government would neither be distracted nor intimidated into abandoning the ongoing reforms aimed at rejuvenating the economy and creating a pathway of prosperity for the citizenry.

The Minister said it is now evident that some desperate individuals have resorted to publishing fake news to erode public trust in the government and sow the seed of discord in the country.

Idris said the government will exercise its rights within the Federal Republic of Nigeria's laws to contain rogue actions to destabilize national security and the nation’s hard-earned democracy.

He urged the public to exercise discernment and refrain from spreading or amplifying the unfounded report, which is being strategically planted on some pliant and compromised news platforms to subvert the nation’s democracy.

Politics"Report To Work Unfailingly": TUC Tells Members, Opts Out Of Nationwide Protest by chisomkachy(op): 10:00am On Feb 27, 2024
On Monday night, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a memo instructing its members and affiliates in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to report to work as usual on February 27 and 28, 2024.

“I write to direct all affiliates and the thirty-six state Councils and FCT of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria to ensure they go to work unfailingly on these dates,” stated TUC President Festus Osifo in the internal memo. “we expect your compliance.”

The NLC, through the protests, aim to express dissatisfaction with the worsening economic situation and the rising cost of living in Nigeria.

The union rejected a last-minute attempt by the Federal Government, led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, to prevent the protests. Akume met with the NLC, TUC, and other labor leaders on Monday night.

While the TUC won’t join the NLC protests, Osifo emphasised the urgent need to expedite discussions on enacting the new national minimum wage into law. He addressed a press conference in Abuja on Monday, highlighting the growing hunger and hardship faced by Nigerian workers and citizens.

Osifo argued that the government and private sector’s prompt passage and faithful implementation of the new minimum wage would enhance workers’ disposable income and purchasing power. He added that the TUC has been investigating the root causes of the country’s economic problems and potential solutions over the past few weeks.

Uncontrolled Naira devaluation and widespread insecurity were identified by Osifo as the primary causes of the economic difficulties. He outlined the TUC’s proposed short, medium, and long-term solutions, which include: fixing the real value of the Naira, deliberate steps to address the allegation that sub-national governments throw billions of dollars monthly into the parallel market and dollarisation of political party primaries and electioneering.

The solutions also included the clampdown on speculative trading in the foreign exchange market, patronising made-in-Nigeria goods, strengthening the economic management team and curbing crude oil theft, among others.

NDLEA arrests port terminal operator, dock worker over 1,044.29kg Cocaine, Colos

Declares 4 others wanted; nabs vigilante commander, grandpa, others for dealing in illicit drugs; intercepts Cocaine, Ecstasy consignments in canvas shoes, headgear going to UK, Cyprus

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have begun to unmask members of an organized criminal network behind the recent importation of two containers laden with illicit drugs as well as assorted arms and ammunition from Durban, South Africa to the Tincan seaport in Lagos.

Among those already arrested as members of the syndicate are: a clearing and notify party of the two containers, Falowo Samuel Kayode; a dock worker, Anjorin Idowu and Uzairu Ahmed Iguda who is in charge of the Five Star terminal at the port. Another dock worker at the terminal, Mohammed Muktar Sule (alias organizer) who is equally linked to the syndicate is currently at large.

Based on credible intelligence, the Agency had requested for a 100 percent joint examination of two containers marked MSCU 4581770 and TRHU 7968071 from South Africa. As a result, the exercise was conducted with other stakeholders on 18th and 19th of January, 2024 during which 56.39kg cocaine and 795kg Colorado, a synthetic strong strain of cannabis among other illegal items were recovered from the containers.

Following a tasking order by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd) to a combined team of specialized units of the agency to unravel those behind the importation of the large consignments of the illicit drugs, ongoing investigations have led to the discovery of more bags of Colorado weighing 192.7kg, a pistol, and rounds of ammunition removed from the container, MSCU 4581770 and hidden in an empty container before the 100 percent joint examination at the Five Star terminal. As a result, two suspects: Uzairu Ahmed Iguda who is in charge of the terminal’s container positioning and stacking, and Anjorin Idowu who is a dock worker in the terminal have been arrested. Investigations reveal that the three suspects conspired with the agent and notify party, Falowo Samuel Kayode to remove the 192.7kg Colorado, pistol and rounds of ammunition from the container to an empty container in the terminal.

The latest seizure brings the total recovered from the two containers to 56.39kg of cocaine and 987.9kg of Colorado with a combined weight of 1,044.29kg. PoliticsFOREX Crisis: Raid On BDCs Ill-Advised, Wrongly-Directed - Peter Obi by chisomkachy(op): 7:30am On Feb 25, 2024
The recent reported attacks and disruption of the business activities of Bureaux de Change (BDCs) operators in different urban centers across the country by Government Agencies, are ill-advised and wrongly directed.

Rather than solve the problem, the action will further escalate and worsen the exchange rate situation in the country. The BDCs are not the primary suppliers of forex nor do they create demand. They only provide a market to sellers and buyers of foreign currency.

They are part and parcel of every economy and can be found even in the developed economies of the world. To think that the BDCs are the cause of the declining value of the Naira is a smack on rational economic thinking.

The only way to shore up the value of our currency is to move the country from consumption to production, especially export-led production, and fight corruption, which allows unproductive money to pursue the available supply of foreign currency.

As long as Nigeria remains an unproductive economy and corruption continues unfettered with people in possession of unproductive excess cash, the value of our currency will continue to depreciate.

It's important therefore that government authorities properly understand the workings of a modern economy and channel their efforts accordingly. -PO

PoliticsDespite Challenges, No Going Back On My Reforms - Tinubu by chisomkachy(op): 9:49pm On Feb 22, 2024
President Bola Tinubu says there is no going back on the reforms introduced by his administration.

During his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, the president announced removal of fuel subsidy and also directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to collapse the existing exchange rates.

Consequently, the apex bank directed Deposit Money Banks to remove the rate cap on the naira at the Investor’s and Exporters’ Window of the foreign exchange market, resulting in free-floating of the national currency against the dollar and other global currencies.

The official exchange rate had risen by over 60 per cent as the naira fell from 471/dollar to 664.04/dollar and closed the week later at N663.04/dollar.

The Nigerian currency continued losing ground till it reached all-time low of over N2000 to a dollar.

Removal of petroleum subsidy also led to more than triple increase in the pump price of petrol, resulting in inflation.

Critics have accused the president of poorly executing his policy, saying he ought to have conducted feasibility studies ahead of implementation.

Following the nationwide hardship, there have been calls on the president to reverse some of his policies.

But speaking while receiving a delegation from the Corporate Council on Africa (CCA) led by Florizelle Liser, CCA’s President and Chief Executive Officer, in Abuja, on Thursday, Tinubu said, We are right in the middle of a challenging stage of our reforms. We have headwinds, no doubt, but we are not going back.”

He reiterated his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s economic growth and stability, emphasizing that he is not relenting until his vision for Nigeria is achieved.

PoliticsGovs Responsible For $/N Hike, Converting Allocations To Dollars - Idris Usman by chisomkachy(op): 5:41pm On Feb 22, 2024
An activist, Idris Etanami Usman has lamented the endless paucity of dollar denominations in the country which he said, has affected genuine businesses.

He attributed the scarcity of dollars to governors converting monthly allocations to dollars, noting that the investigations his company conducted uncovered alarming evidence pointing towards the complicity of certain state governors in exacerbating the dire situation.

Usman, who is a leading data mining and public relations executive, in a statement made available to DAILY POST in Abuja on Thursday, lamented the crisis, stressing that the role of governors with regard to economic policies must be redefined.

He insisted that the routine conversion undermines the stability of the nation’s currency.

The statement also decried the lack of palliative distribution by some governors despite the huge financial support from the Federal Government.

“At a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet, the failure of state governors to fulfil their obligations to the people is both reprehensible and inexcusable.

“It is clear that the actions of these governors have contributed significantly to the economic crisis facing our nation. By prioritising personal gain over the well-being of their constituents, they have betrayed the trust placed in them by the Nigerian people.

”We call upon these governors to be held accountable for their actions and to take immediate steps to rectify the damage they have caused.

He called on anti-graft agencies to deepen the investigation into the financial activities of those governors to bring the culpable ones to book.
