Nairaland GeneralBodies Of Brazil Football Team Killed In Crash Arrives Home.. by ChrisHornz(op): 4:09pm On Dec 03, 2016
The bodies of 50 players, coaches and staff from a Brazilian football team tragically wiped out in a plane crash in Colombia arrived home Saturday for a massive funeral. Fireworks lit up the sky over the stadium in Chapeco, in southern Brazil, as the Hercules cargo planes touched down at the city’s airport in pouring rain.
The small city is holding a huge funeral to honor its team, Chapecoense Real — an unsung club having a fairytale season until the plane flying it to the biggest match in its history ran out of fuel and smashed into the mountains outside Medellin on Monday night.
The city is expecting some 100,000 people — half its population — to descend on Conda Arena, the stadium where just 10 days ago Chapecoense were lighting up the pitch. “I came to pay a final tribute from the fans to our team,” said architect Alexandre Bledin, 34, wearing the club’s green and white jersey. “I still can’t believe what happened.”
The arrival was delayed by an outpouring of emotion along the way.
A military guard of honor receives the coffins of the members of the Chapecoense Real football club team killed in a plane crash in Colombia, upon their arrival at the airport of Chapeco, in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, on December 3, 2016.
The first of two Brazilian air force planes carrying the remains of a football team killed in a plane crash arrived Saturday in the city of Chapeco in southern Brazil.
During a refueling stop in the Amazon city of Manaus, the coffins were consolidated from three planes onto two, for logistical reasons. And they took off two hours late because local authorities and people showed up at the airport to pay tribute to the crash victims, the Air Force said.
In Chapeco, they will go on a funeral procession to the stadium and be laid out on the pitch. Brazilian President Michel Temer was there to meet the planes on arrival.
The coach of the Brazilian national team, Tite, and FIFA chief Gianni Infantino will attend the memorial at the stadium.
The latter canceled a trip to Australia to be there. – ‘My son was all passion’ – The crash has left the football world in mourning. Football legends Pele and Maradona as well as current superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have led tributes to the fallen team in recent days.
A minute’s silence for Chapecoense will be held before every Champions League and Europa League game next week. In Brazil, other clubs have offered Chapecoense players so it can continue competing. Chapecoense had been on their way to Medellin for the finals of the Copa Sudamericana, South America’s second-biggest club tournament. Inside the stadium, a single set of goal posts remains
— the one star goalkeeper Marcos Danilo Padilha, 31, defended in the semi-final match with a heroic last-minute save that sealed Chapecoense’s trip to the finals. “It’s a horrible feeling, seeing this and knowing my son will arrive here in a coffin,” said...........

Nairaland GeneralPro-jonathan Protest Rocks Enugu State. by ChrisHornz(op): 5:25am On Dec 01, 2016
Igbo youths took to the streets of Enugu on Wednesday in protest against the alleged “persecution” of Patience Jonathan by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Some bank accounts, reportedly belonging to the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan had been frozen by the anti-graft agency.
The protesters, under the aegis of Concerned Igbo Youths, said Patience’s travail was an attempt to humiliate the former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Brandishing placards and chanting solidarity songs, the group, led by its coordinator, Victor Ezenagu, marched to the Enugu office of the EFCC, where they submitted a petition to the South-East zonal head of the commission, Mr. Johnson Babalola.
Some youths also protested in front of the Enugu State Government House.
In the petition entitled, ‘Unjust persecution and desperate plan to humiliate former President Goodluck Jonathan,’ the youths demanded an immediate unfreezing of Patience Jonathan’s accounts.
The petition read in part, “While we salute the commitment of the present administration towards fighting corruption in the country, we express our disaffection to the manner the war is being prosecuted by the commission under your watch.
“Some of the actions of the commission in recent time leave no one in doubt that certain persons have clearly been singled out to be humiliated.
“A case in point is that of a former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, who is currently being prosecuted by the EFCC. We see the freezing of her personal accounts and ongoing prosecution as an attempt to discredit former President Goodluck Jonathan.”
The youths said they were miffed that Jonathan was being victimised by the...........

Nairaland GeneralWhat You Need To Know About Bitcoin (cryptocurrency). by ChrisHornz(op): 5:10am On Dec 01, 2016
Nowadays, Bitcoin is being discussed aloud in the cyber space. So, for your knowledge, let me tell you that Bitcoin is just a virtual currency and not in the physical existence. Various websites accept this currency for online shopping. A Japanese computer programmer invented the currency in 2009.

How Bitcoin is created
New Bitcoins are created using an open source software and this process of creating new virtual currencies is known as mining. Everyone can perform mining to create Bitcoins. But, to create Bitcoins, it is necessary to have high speed Internet and high performance computer power.
Recently, the world’s first Bitcoin ATM came into being in Canada. Using this ATM, any official currency can be converted into Bitcoin......

A 19-year-old man, Olamilekan Yusuf, was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos for allegedly procuring abortion drugs for his 14-year-old girl friend.
Yusuf, who resides at Turner Eradiri Street, Ajegunle, Lagos, is facing one charge of procurement of abortion drugs at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 27 at his residence.

“The parents of the 14-year-old girl discovered that their daughter was acting strange and was also in so much pain, they decided to take her to the hospital for medical attention.

Nairaland GeneralSAD!!: Brazilian Football Team In Colombia Air Crash by ChrisHornz(op): 2:08pm On Nov 29, 2016
A chartered aircraft with 81 people on board, including a Brazilian first division football team heading to Colombia, has crashed on its way to Medellin’s international airport.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team was going to Colombia for a regional tournament final.
Aviation authorities said there are however reports of at least six survivors.
“It’s a tragedy of huge proportions,” an Associated Press (AP) report from Bogota in Colombia quoted the Medellin Mayor Federico Gutierrez as telling a local radio station.
He was on his way to the site in a mountainous area outside the city where aircraft crashed.
Aviation authorities said the British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane declared an emergency at 10 p.m. Monday (0300 Tuesday GMT) due to an electrical failure.
The plane was operated by a Bolivian charter airline named Lamia,
Authorities and rescuers were immediately activated but an air force helicopter had to turn back because of low visibility.
They urged journalists to stay away from the hard-to-access zone and stay off the roads to facilitate the entry of ambulances and rescuers.
The area has been hit by heavy rains in recent days.
An ambulance transporting a male passenger with oxygen and covered in a blanket arrived on a stretcher to a local hospital, Blu Radio reported. He was apparently alive.
The aircraft, which made a stop in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was transporting the first division Chapecoense soccer team from southern Brazil.
The team was scheduled to play Wednesday in the first of a two-game Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional of Medellin.
The plane was carrying 72 passengers and nine crew members, aviation.............

Nairaland GeneralFRSC To Raise Driver’s Licence, Number Plate’s Fees. by ChrisHornz(op): 1:57pm On Nov 29, 2016
The Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi, has cried out to the Joint Tax Board (JTB) to facilitate the payment of over N700 million owed it by various states in the country.
He also said the commission was tinkering with the idea of increasing the cost of procuring the driver’s licence and vehicle plate number, stressing that the current rate of N6,000 and N12,000 for both items respectively, was no longer sustainable judging from the hike in operational cost.
Speaking at the 136th meeting of the JTB held in Abuja yesterday, the Corps Marshall said the debt was crippling its operations nationwide, adding that its running cost keeps swelling as many states have failed to supply generators to the FRSC offices where vehicle plate number plates and drivers licence are procured.
He however hailed some states like Anambra and Delta for offsetting their debt, even as he urged others to toe the same path.
“FRSC is owed N700 million. I’ve written to the JTB. We need this money badly because it’s hurting our operations. Some states have credit balance of millions. We offer credit facilities but paying for service rendered is now very key. I hope the JTB intervenes”, he said. On the plate number and driver’s licence, Oyeyemi said the FRSC was spending much more to produce the two items due to recession, a development that is forcing the commission to push for an increase in the cost of procuring them.
“N6,000 to get a driver’s licence and N12,000 for vehicle plate number is too poor. We are spending so much to produce them. I’m running over 200 in stations across the country. I shouldn’t be providing that. The states should.
“When I came in last year, the popular Mikano generator was N1.5 million, now it’s N3.8 million. Only Kwara State provided a generator. Majority of the states defaulted in providing that. All states should have secured offices. They should own these stations and I want to relocate workstations there. I want to stamp out corruption. Enough is enough.
“So, for us, our running costs is..........

Nairaland GeneralREAD: Frozen $15.5m: Court Rejects Patience’s Application To Restrain EFCC by ChrisHornz(op): 8:25am On Nov 23, 2016
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday rejected an application by the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, seeking to bar the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from tampering with a sum of $15.591 frozen in four Skye Bank accounts.
The EFCC placed a ‘No Debit Order’ on the four bank accounts in July while probing Jonathan’s former Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs, Waripamo-Owei Dudafa, for money laundering.
But Patience, who had laid claim to the money, filed a fundamental rights enforcement action against the EFCC, Skye Bank, Dudafa and the four companies in whose names the accounts were opened.
She is urging the court to order the EFCC to remove the ‘No Debit Order’ on the accounts and to release the $15.5m to her.
At the Tuesday’s proceedings in the case before Justice Mohammed Idris, Patience’s lawyer, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), made an oral application, urging the judge to restrain the EFCC from tampering with the money pending the final determination of the case.
But the EFCC lawyer..........

Nairaland GeneralSEE THIS: 6 Tests That Will Help You Spot Fake Rice(plastic Rice) by ChrisHornz(op): 7:10am On Nov 22, 2016
Reports indicate that China produces fake rice which is mixed with plastic for exportation to African countries including Nigeria. China has a history of making fake food items and the fake rice phenomenon has been there for a while. A reputable English-language newspaper in Korea, The Korea Times, reported that “China famous for having all, making all, has now been reported to have made rice out of plastic and has distributed it.”
The ‘plastic rice’ is reportedly made by forming potatoes and sweet potatoes into regular rice grains shape, then adding industrial synthetic resins. It remains hard after cooking and can cause serious health issues. Experts have raised the alarm of possible flooding of the Nigerian market with the ‘plastic rice’.
– Audu Ogbeh As Christmas draws close, a lot of people will be getting bags of rice from their employers, friends and well-wishers. You can determine if your rice is fake by carrying out any of the simple tests below.
1. The mortar and pestle test When molding a few grains of rice with a mortar and pestle, if the powder gives a quite white colour, you are good to go but it has a yellow discoloration, your rice must be fake.
2. The fire test You know what plastic smells like right. So, get a lighter and burn a handful of rice. If it catches fire and smells like burnt plastic, you have fake rice.

EducationFG Gives JAMB Go Ahead To Adopt Different Cut Off Points For Universities, Polyt by ChrisHornz(op): 7:02am On Nov 22, 2016
Following the approval by the board of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to enable tertiary educational institutions to set different cut-off points, the federal government on Monday gave the nod for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to proceed with their own cut-off marks as against the unified 180 mark.
Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah said government had thrown its weight behind the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) decision to abolish the uniform cut-off marks for admission into all tertiary institutions in the country, given that the current policy lacks fairness, equity and logic.
He explained that the federal government is in full support of the decision of the board to introduce discriminatory cut-off marks for admissions into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The Minister gave his nod after a one-day interactive forum with Chief Executives under the Ministry in Abuja.
According to Anwukah, “It does not make any sense subjecting candidates who are seeking admission into Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education to the same cut-off marks when the durations and contents of their courses are radically different.”
He informed the gathering that government had directed JAMB to consult widely with relevant stakeholders to come up with new and separate cut-off marks for University ............

EducationSEE THIS: "No Going Back On Strike", ASUU Vows by ChrisHornz(op): 10:40am On Nov 16, 2016
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says there is no going back on its one-week warning strike scheduled to begin on Wednesday.
Biodun Ogunyemi, the union’s National President, told the News Agency of Nigeria on telephone on Tuesday in Lagos that the strike would be total.
The union leadership, after its emergency executive committee meeting, declared the warning strike at a news conference on Monday in Abuja.
Mr. Ogunyemi said chronic under-funding of the sector through low budgetary allocation, which went from 11 per cent in 2015 to eight per cent in 2016, did not go down well with the union.
He pointed out the failure of government to implement the 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as some of the reasons for embarking on the warning strike.
The president said that its members were tired of what they described as “government’s empty promises’’ in setting up its negotiation team for the review of agreement as consistently requested by ASUU since 2012.
“There shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of our branches while the strike lasts.”
According to him, the union will put machinery in place to ensure that there is total compliance during the strike.
He explained that the essence of the warning strike was to.......

Business4 Ways To Make Online Purchases Without Credit Card. by ChrisHornz(op): 5:37am On Nov 11, 2016
The credit card is becoming popular in Nigeria and many people are fast getting one. Credit card offers several opportunities. It gives certain benefits that a debit card does not offer. Most major purchases can only be done using a credit card.
In fact, many view the credit card as the key to the gate that will lead them down the path to riches. With a credit card, they can buy whatever their hearts desire. They can earn money if they have a credit card, seeing as you can link a credit card with PayPal or another merchant account, and receive donations and payments from other people. Without a credit card, it will seem that you are excluded from the Internet elite. You’re nothing but a pariah; an outsider who can only look on helplessly as others reap the benefits of possessing this golden ticket.
But owning a credit card isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and using one online, it will seem, carries tremendous risk. Somebody’s credit card details can be sniffed quite easily through using some software.
www.toughnickel.com has explored a few other ways of buying things online. The findings show that not owning a credit card or a cheque card doesn’t necessarily mean that a bank customer will be forever banished from the wondrous online shopping experience.
Here are 10 ways to buy things online without a credit card:
Use debit card
Generally speaking, if your debit card is approved for online shopping and has the Visa or MasterCard logo on it, as well as meeting other requirements like having a Security number, you should be good to go. But check with the bank first, preferably before opening an account and getting a debit card.
If you don’t want to open an account with a bank, you can just use Payoneer instead. Payoneer allows you to receive funds from certain partners like Google, Amazon and many others, and there are several ways you can top up a Payoneer account. The debit card they give you can be used to shop online.
Instant electronic funds transfer
Some stores online offer you the option of electronic funds transfer for payment.
This usually involves adding your desired items to a cart as usual, and then..............

HealthRead:tips For Getting A Flatter Stomach. by ChrisHornz(op): 5:31am On Nov 11, 2016
A toned, flat tummy is a goal that many people strive to achieve, but endless crunches and ditching all your favourite foods isn’t the right—or fun—way to do it. A sculpted core and trim tummy can be attained by incorporating small changes into your day, like holding in your abs while you walk and adding the right healthy fats to your diet. Here are simple ways to flatten your belly.
Talk and walk
Instead of catching up with friends over food and drinks, suggest a reunion on the move. You’re likely to work out 104 per cent harder if you have an exercise buddy. Suggest a weekly walk-and-talk session, form a friendly fitness club or try a new class at the gym together.
Try the roll-up
Hold a resistance band taut between your hands and lie on the floor face up, with legs extended and arms overhead. Pull abs in, tuck your chin, lift arms toward the ceiling, and roll head, shoulders, and torso up and over your legs as far as you can. Keep heels firmly on the floor and reach hands towards your feet. Pause, then slowly roll back down. Do five to eight reps with 30 minutes of cardio five to six times a week.
Make time for cardio
If you want to burn the most belly fat, a Duke University study confirms that aerobic exercise is the most effective in burning that deep, visceral belly fat. In fact,.................

Nairaland GeneralHORRIBLE : Woman Bathed With Acid After Accepting Lover’s Proposal. by ChrisHornz(op): 8:38am On Nov 07, 2016
A 25-year-old woman, Ogochukwu Nwosu, is in a critical condition at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, Surulere, Lagos State, after she was bathed with substance suspected to be acid.
We learnt that Ogochukwu was at Ilasa bus stop, on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, when a man allegedly dropped from a motorcycle and poured acid on her.
He was said to have jumped back on the motorcycle and fled the scene.
The victim, who sustained burns on her face, neck, breasts, among other parts of her body, was reportedly rushed to LUTH by passersby.
Ogochukwu, who spoke with our correspondent from her hospital bed, accused one Mrs. Chidi, the wife of the man who had proposed marriage to her, as the culprit.
She alleged that Mrs. Chidi had been threatening her on the telephone and through text messages immediately she learnt of her husband’s intention to marry her (Ogochukwu).
She said she had turned down Mr. Chidi’s proposal because......

Nairaland GeneralBiafra!! by ChrisHornz(op): 1:04am On Nov 07, 2016
Dr. Charles Soludo, Professor of the Economic Sciences, former Economic Adviser to the President of the federation, and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, very recently said at a book launch on the subject of Biafra that ignoring the new Biafra secessionist movement will be a mistake by the Buhari administration. I couldn’t agree more. Soludo just amplifies the position which this column has consistently taken in the past, and which I wish to reaffirm today. The Biafra movement is a slow-burning fire at the moment. In a speculative survey, it is easy to assume the following scenarios: that 40% of Igbo people back the secessionist objective of the new Biafra movements, 20% are currently unconvinced, and in between is 40% of the undecided, the ambivalent, and the neutral, who could go one way or the other. In other words, only 40% of the Igbo population currently stand in the way, or constitute the difference between a secessionist movement in full force, or a merely fissiparous movement that could very easily, and strategically be demobilized if the Federal government applies civilized and strategic methods, including the “capturing of hearts and minds technique.” This flash statistics can equally be applied to the remaining population of the East and the parts of the old Midwest, now all called the “South-South” which constitute the geographical areas claimed by the Biafran secessionists. The federal government currently treats this movement as some kind of flash-in-the pan phenomenon, inspired mostly by a reactionary impulse, by a new generation of young people, mostly those who were born after the war, and who suffer the massive unemployment that ravages the region with its vast number of the skilled and unemployed as some kind of outlet for the frustration. The strategy has been to burst their open-air protests using military and police action, and contain them by force from street protests. This is a “dead-end” policy. It shows quite clearly that Nigeria’s national security policy is unimaginative, and geared mostly to constabulary methods. But I should not tell the federal government what to do. They ought to have, and where they do not, they should develop the kind of expertise that can be fully deployed to providing, and thinking out frameworks of action, that can manage these kinds of conflicts, so that it does not escalate into war and bloodshed, and so that the federal government may have its hat in the game of winning the argument for a sustainable and shared nation. Now, the argument for Biafra, and its increasing appeal rests squarely in the feeling particularly, of the Igbo, of political isolation, economic subjugation, mistreatment, lack of opportunity in Nigeria, and the discrimination they have suffered within the current nation, particularly since the end of the civil war in 1970. It is true too that the Igbo have suffered all these and more, and that the there is a serious disjuncture between the rights of the Igbo as Nigerians and the conditions to which they’ve been subjected in the unspoken Carthaginian treaty at force, that subverts the treaty of “No Victor, No Vanquished” to which the Biafrans agreed as precondition for the acceptance of an end to hostilities. Let me put this in context: Biafrans have argued that the primary condition for which they agreed to end the civil war in 1970, and not to launch the Guerrilla phase of that war, or continue hostilities was on the agreements reached to reabsorb Biafrans into national life without discrimination or recrimination; the launch of the program of Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, and Reintegration, the so-called “three Rs.” The new Biafrans claim that the Federal government reneged on this agreement since none of the Rs took place in the East. Nothing was rebuilt, including the damaged energy or power...........

Nairaland GeneralHMM!: Fresh EFCC Probe Links Obanikoro To Diezani Poll Cash by ChrisHornz(op): 12:28am On Nov 07, 2016
Impeccable sources in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told our correspondent on Sunday that Obanikoro, who was released last Friday, might be invited again soon to explain his alleged role in the scam.
The ex-minister, who returned from the United States on October 17, spent three weeks at the Abuja office of the EFCC for allegedly receiving N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser and distributing over N3bn to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and Senator Iyiola Omisore, who were the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti and Osun states respectively in 2014.
Obanikoro subsequently returned N100m to the EFCC with a promise to return another N480m.
His American and Nigerian passports were subsequently seized before his release last Friday.
An EFCC detective on Sunday told our correspondent that recent investigations showed that Obanikoro allegedly received N400m from a former Minister of Finance, Senator Nenadi Usman, who was the Director of Finance of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation during the build-up to the 2015 elections.
The source said sometime in 2015, Usman sent the money to Obanikoro through a proxy.
The detective said, “As part of investigations into the billions disbursed by Nenadi Usman during the build-up to the 2015 elections, we interrogated a suspect at our office. The suspect told us that he handed over N400m to Obanikoro in the presence of some PDP members.
“So, Obanikoro will be invited to the Lagos office of the EFCC to tell his own side of the story.”
The EFCC had alleged in March that about N3.145bn was mysteriously transferred from............

Nairaland GeneralSEE THIS: Rights Of A Landlord In Property Eviction by ChrisHornz(op): 12:17am On Nov 07, 2016
It is generally believed that landlords are troublesome people who lord their properties over tenants and try to make life uncomfortable for them but this is not always true. Just as tenants have been at the mercy of landlords, landlords have also been treated with contempt and maligned by tenants.
Frustrated with tenants who refuse to pay rent, damage their properties and cause conflicts amongst other tenants, landlords are often faced with the option of ejecting such a tenant. There are however rules by law that must be followed and a landlord needs to know these rules so as not to be in err of the law. By law, it is wrong for a landlord to forcibly eject a tenant no matter how much rent he or she owes or how cantankerous such a tenant is.
The recovery of property by law in most states in Nigeria and anywhere in the world really unfortunately for landlords is in the favour of the tenant.
This is done by the different law making bodies of the states to curb the excesses of landlords and ensure that tenants are not entirely at their mercy to be treated anyhow.
A landlord who therefore wishes to eject his tenant for whatever reason must use the method prescribed by law.
The law states that a landlord must give his tenant......

Nairaland GeneralMercy Johnson - Being Dark Has Denied Me Movie Roles.... by ChrisHornz(op): 8:21pm On Nov 05, 2016
Actress, Mercy Johnson has become a household name today but many may not know the screen diva faced rejection in the movie industry at some point in her career.
In a chat with Saturday Beats, she revealed that some movie producers did not give her slots in their production because of her dark complexion.
She said that when she started out in the Nigerian movie industry, most movie directors and producers always preferred to cast fair-skinned ladies at the expense of talented but dark-skinned ones.
“It is very true that when I was starting out in the movie industry, it was difficult to get roles because of my complexion. I faced that a lot and I tell people that my success is just grace. Somebody once told me that I am too dark but that is where the grace and favour of God comes in. Regardless of everything, most of the dark-skinned actresses that are my contemporaries made it,” she said.
The actress who has featured in scores of movies told Saturday Beats that it would be unfair of anyone to say she features in any movie without any consideration.
“It is not true that I pick just any movie role. People are different and what appeals to one person might not appeal to the other. One of my most popular movies is.......
