Louis Van Gaal's side now must beat Wolfsburg in Germany in their final game to ensure qualification from Group B and Keane believes Rooney is not leading from the front as a captain should.

"It seemed a strange atmosphere at Old Trafford tonight, they lacked cutting edge," Keane said, speaking on ITV after the match.

"You got the impression the players were waiting for something to happen, rather than going and making it happen. Wayne [Rooney] was on about lack of composure and quality, but I think he was as guilty as anybody. He needs to step up to the plate.

"You look at Wayne's legacy at Old Trafford, it's absolutely fantastic. His goals record is brilliant. But now he's the captain there's more responsibility and I think he's got to do a lot more."

Rooney, who has managed just two Premier League goals this season, is enjoying one of the worst statistical seasons of his career and Keane believes the England captain is not as fit as he should be.

The 30-year-old attended a WWE Raw event on November 9 and was involved in a stunt where he theatrically slapped wrestler Wade Barrett in front of his six-year-old son Kai.

Keane highlighted this as evidence that Rooney is not putting in enough work off the field to ensure he is at his best on it.

"I always question certain players what are they doing off the field," Keane said.

"Last week I saw him slapping a wrestler and I'm thinking 'Why is he getting involved in all that nonsense?' There's no benefit to him. I'd have a look at that side of it.

"It's certainly not helping him. I wouldn't begrudge him going out and enjoying himself, but if you're not at it yourself you've got to have a look and lead by example. He didn't do that tonight. He doesn't look sharp, he looks awful.

"Mentally he doesn't look really sharp; physically he doesn't look in great shape. He needs to have a look at himself."

Anderson of 2008 would have made fun of that midfield yesterday with amount of space left wide open to penetrate with bursting forward runs. It's surprising a young man like Sneiderlin cannot travel with the ball even 20 yards. We need variety of players for different occasions not only those who can pass.

Was about the roles of each player. It is the role of Bastian to move with the ball and Morgan to shield the back, and besides these players have their attributes.

schweini can't protect our back 4, he has no pace, nd he's not that strong like he used to be, A 3 man midfield of Herrera schneirdelin schweinstiger in a 4.3.3 formation would be the ideal set up.

Carrick is neither and he does it besides Herrera helps in defending. It should be not against every team like top teams or attacking ones but against those that sit back.

We don't have the attack for 433, where are the 3 forward players?

schweini is not a Defensive Midfielder.

he's less mobile at this his age, not attacking and needs a mobile box to box pair not Schneiderlin.

Pairing him with Herrera might be okay where he's plays as the holding/defensive midfielder and Herrera as the box to box or Schneiderlin/Herrera.

@elampiro I don`t really know the circumstances in which he came in in those matches but when that subs was about to be made i knew it was a wrong move because Fellaini cannot play in that midfield the way Schweini will. Fellaini isn`t as mobile as Schweini and and he`s only good at shot passes and slower.

Don't think Fellaini for Bastian was wrong since Bastian was hanging unto the ball, I believe change in formation without the right players for it caused the confusion. This is where Carrick is better, though slow but more creative with his passes.

I'm even surprised we are complaining of lack of goals when we're using 2 DM and expecting them to be creative. And then you've a team with no CF on the bench to be called upon

Darmian offers nothing going forward. It looks like we sold Rafael, Nani and Welbeck too prematurely.

My vex is that the team, the attack and midfield, is stiff and immobile making it very easy for opponents to contain.
