You're actually right, liverpool's midfield is just there, but what they've is hardwork and keeping things simple. But they can afford that by having world class front 3 and fullbacks.

Lingard should've given him the pass the 1st time he got it when Martial had a big pass space in between their 2 CBs. There was no need running with the ball.
