River Niger in Alaigbo
|
Imo River
|
Imo River runs from Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom and empties into the atlantic ocean. River Niger runs from outsde Nigeria through Anambra, Imo, Rivers, Bayelsa and empties into the ocean If Nigeria ================== (hopefullly Akwa Ibom and Rivers/Bayelsa do not remain with Nigeria but form their own country or countries), then Igbos can work with Akwa Ibom and Rivers/Bayelsa to implement the dredging of these rivers up to Aba and Onitsha, respectively, to permit entry of large ships. Those countries (i.e., Akwa Ibom and Rivers) will get their shipping tolls paid for by SE, at the main wharfs, and the ships will sail inward to alaigbo. More recently, the large electrical appliances used for the Alaoji, Aba power project was shipped in via Imo River (see link). http://www.rocksonengineering.com/pages/About_Rockson/News_Imo-River-Crossing_08-09.html So what I am saying here is very possible with a little more dredging work. It looks like working on Imo River will be much more sustainable and self containing as it is devoid of external vagaries of the River Niger. Abokis may block the River Niger water upstream of Igboland. In contrast, Imo River begins in Alaigbo. Alternatively, or even in addition to the above, although Opobo is in Rivers State, it is populated to a large extent by people with Igbo ancestry (King Jaja of Opobo connection). So, with proper win-win arrangment, we can have an ''Igbo annex'' country in Opobo with more ready access to the sea. |
Abia is one of the wealthiest states in Nigeria. It is one of states with the most educated Nigerians. It is one of the states with the most industries in Nigeria. It is one of the states with high economic activity in Nigeria. It is one of the states with the most hardworking people in the world. It is one of the oil-producing states in Nigeria. It is a very peaceful state, devoid of inter/intra-ethnic, political, and religious strife common in many parts of Nigeria. But it is also one of the states with a relatively high crime rate. So it comes with the best and the bad, typical of any normal society, including America. So Abia will have a new governor in 2015. The desire to move Abia forward cannot be overemphasized and the 2015 election holds the key to make or mar Abia, at least for the mid-term. That being said, much as I would love the contest to be open for everyone to contest, I also would love for it to be given to an Ngwa Indigene. Ngwa People have not really had a say in the running of Abia, despite being the largest single sub-ethnic block in Abia. If Igbos are serious about rotational presidency and the cry about political marginalization, then charity should begin at home in the five full Igbo states. Zones in each SE that have not yet produced a state governor should be allowed to do so in 2015. If such zones are not given the opportunity, then Igbos as a group must no longer cry of marginalization in the greater Nigerian politics. But this thread is specifically about Abia. So who will Ngwa people produce to lead Abia in 2015? We do not want an ''Orji-like'' governor in 2015. and hopefully thereafter. We want a pro-development governor with integrity; someone who is not too economically hamstrung that his/her first ''task'' will be to overtly or covertly loot state resources for his/her future. I saw the article below and wanted to share it. Almost all listed aspirants are from the Ngwa group, but I do not know much about most of them. I have read about Reagan Ufomba and I am aware of Emeka Wogu, the current minister of labor. Abians in the house who among these is fit or do we wait for another? Caveat: I am from Umuahia and I have no direct ancestral link with Ngwa, but I think what is fair is fair. ======================================================================================================== Abia guber: Those who want to succeed Orji Friday, July 5, 2013 Abia guber: Those who want to succeed Orji advertisement From: OKEY SAMPSON, Aba Barely two years to the next governorship election in Abia State, there is no gainsaying that many politicians are already making strategic moves to succeed the incumbent governor, Theodore A Orji whose tenure will expire in 2015. Even though many of the aspirants are reluctant to openly pronounce their ambitions, the state is a beehive of underground political activities ahead of the next general election. But among critical observers, the question is- Who succeeds T.A Orji in 2015? Before now, the thinking in many quarters is that people of the Ngwa extraction should for reasons of equity, be allowed to have a shot at the coveted seat, but as the coast gets clearer, there is also another school of thought that believes that the race should be narrowed to only Ngwa people from the South Senatorial district. The argument among a reasonable percentage of politicians in the state is that if proper zoning should be followed in 2015 with regard to the governorship seat of the state, no Ngwa man from T.A Orji's area, Abia Central Senatorial zone should throw his hat into the ring. However, despite the possibility of narrowing the seat to a particular Senatorial zone, there are three power blocs that would determine who eventually gets the ticket. They include the presidency, Gov. T.A Orji and the former governor of the state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu. While the first two may appear to be enjoying some political advantage because of the incumbency factor, there is no doubt that Dr Orji Kalu has become a major force since his recent re-launch of his political machinery and structure. A school of thought believes that even though Chief T.A Orji has influence as the incumbent governor, he still cannot boast of a sustainable political structure that can last beyond 2015. But whatever the permutations ahead of the 2015 governorship election, at the last count, over 12 persons are known to be interested in the coveted seat. While some have not made their interest public, others have already started to test the political waters. The roll calls include: Eric Acho Nwakanma Little was known of him before 1999 when he was elected into the Abia State House of Assembly to represent Obingwa East constituency. He rose to become the Speaker of the House when Prince Christopher Enweremmadu vacated the seat. He has served as deputy governor of the state on two occasions. As providence may have it, when the former deputy governor of Abia State, Dr. Chima Nwafor was removed from office under Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, and Nwakanma was chosen to replace him. Nwakanma again was called in to replace comrade Chris Akomas as deputy governor when the later quarreled with his principal, T.A Orji. He equally contested the Abia South Senatorial seat on the platform of the PPA in 2007, but lost to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe. Ahead of 2015, Nwakanma is speculated to have interest in the governorship seat of the state, but it is not clear under which camp he would actualize his dream. But his supporters argue that zoning favours him having come from Obingwa Local Government in Abia South Senatorial zone. Chris Akomas He is from Nenu in Obingwa Local Government of the state. Akomas served as Commissioner for Commerce and Industries under Orji Uzor Kalu before he became the deputy governor of the state in a joint ticket with T. A Orji after the 2007 election. He fell out with his boss and contested the 2011 gubernatorial election on the platform of the Progressive People Alliance (PPA), but lost to the incumbent governor. Since then, not much has been heard about him politically but appears to have been operating from behind. Akomas is said to be nursing the ambition of becoming the governor of the state in 2015 and he also has zoning to his advantage. Many believe he may be coming from the Kalu camp. Reagan Ufomba Ufomba was Special Assistant (SA) to former Governor Orji Kalu. During the 2011 election, he signified his intention to contest the governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but like so many people, he lost to the incumbent governor. To realize his ambition, Ufomba left the PDP for APGA where he ran on the party's ticket in the 2011 governorship election, but lost. Since then he has not given up the hope of becoming the governor of the state and he may be as good as having signified interest judging from the rally he recently held in Aba. But Ufomba's albatross may be from two planks. First, he is from Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government which falls under Abia Central, the same as the present governor. Again, he belongs to the Governor Peter Obi/Maxi Okwu faction of APGA while the party structure in the state under the chairman, Prince Nnanna Ukaegbu is pitching tent with the Chief Victor Umeh faction. Sen. Nkechi Nwaogu She is the only woman from Abia State that presently appears to be showing interest in the governorship position of the state. Going by people's attestation, Nwaogu who dusted two men on her way to the red carpet chamber is the best in terms of representation among the three Senators from the state. She contested and won election into the House of Representatives in 2003 from where she moved to the Senate in 2007 to represent Abia Central. Before the new zoning arrangement based on Senatorial districts being canvassed in some quarters, Nwaogu was a sure candidate. There were permutations in some quarters before now that Governor Orji may contest the Abia Central Senatorial seat in 2015 and concede his seat to her. The gender issue and her place of origin if the new zoning formula being canvassed succeeds may be a minus for the Senator's ambition. Friday N. Nwosu He is a lawyer and human rights activist. He has been a critic of successive governments in the state. Nwosu went underground and he appears a green horn in Abia politics but late last year, the rumour mill had it that he would be in the race for the governorship seat in 2015. The speculation was confirmed recently when Nwosu told a gathering that he has made up his mind to have a slot at the coveted seat. Nwosu is said to be the anointed son of the presidency which is said to have directed T.A Orji to give him (Nwosu) the necessary support. The presidency's interest in Nwosu, it was gathered, stemmed from his closeness to the Bayelsa State governor, Chief Seriake Dickson. Dickson and Nwosu were said to have joined the police force together and left at the same time to read law and were at the Law School together. Dickson reportedly made a strong case for his friend to the presidency from where he is said to be enjoying the best of support from. What 2015 may hold for Nwosu manifested recently when he gave out his daughter in marriage. His country home of Mgboko Umuoria in Obingwa Local Government was literarily shut down as both Governors Orji and Dickson of Abia and Bayelsa states were in attendance. Apart from the perceived support from the presidency, what will be going for Nwosu is the fact that he does not belong to any political camp in the state and many people believe that it is what Abia needs at this point in time. Iheanacho Okezie Prior to the 2007 general election, Iheanacho Okezie was little known in the politics of Abia State. Okezie is believed to be having interest in the governorship seat in 2015, but despite his coming from Akpaa Mbato in Obingwa Local Government which is in Abia South, his political stature has since dwindled owing to his acceptance of a commissionership appointment by Governor Orji. Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe Enyinnaya Abaribe before becoming a two time Senator, came to political limelight when he was elected as deputy governor under Kalu in 1999. He contested the governorship election against his former boss in 2003 on the platform of the then ANPP but lost. Since then, he has not hidden his ambition to govern the state. He wanted to contest the 2007 governorship election when he crossed over to PDP, but was pressurized to step down by the party hierarchy who preferred Chief Onyema Ugochukwu. There is no doubt that Abaribe from Abia South may be warming up for the 2015 governorship election but many odds are definitely against him. Checks revealed that he is not much at home with the people of his Senatorial district. Uzo Azubuike Uzo Azubuike who represents Aba North and Aba South in the House of Representatives was a state legislator for eight years. Speculations are rife that Azubuike might be the joker of Governor Orji in 2015 judging by the former's closeness to the latter's son who presently wields enormous influence in the politics of Abia State. If the advocates of zoning based on Senatorial district should have their way, Azubuike may make do with going back to the National Assembly in 2015 as he is from Umuosu Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government which is in Abia Central. Ikechi Emenike He is from the same Umuahia as the incumbent governor although he is of the Ohuhu extraction. In 2003, Emenike contested the Abia governorship election under ANPP but lost. Emenike, with his political structure within the PDP gave Governor Orji the fight of his life during the 2011 primaries and could have coasted home with victory if not for some high wire politics. Some believe that the Ohuhu-born politician has not given up his ambition and may want to try his luck again in 2015. Stanley Ohajuruka He is a former Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly and also a former member of the House of Representatives. Ohajuruka was an aspirant under the PPA for the governorship election before he jumped ship and contested the 2011 governorship election under the Labour Party (LP) and lost to the incumbent governor. He is also believed to be interested in the governorship seat. Emeka Wogu If what people are told about Emeka Wogu, the Minister of Labour and Productivity concerning his closeness to the presidency is anything to go by, the Aba-born lawyer-turned politician could be said to have already clinched the governorship seat. He has been in the political limelight since 1999 having represented Abia State in the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Allocation Commission (RMFAC) before he was appointed a Minister by the late Umaru Yar'Adua administration. Prince Paul Ikonne Paul Ikonne who is a prince from Ngwaland is the son of Eze Isaac Ajuonu Ikonne of Osusu, Aba. Before 2011, he served the Abia State government as a special assistant under Kalu before he was appointed a commissioner in the early years of the first tenure of the incumbent governor. He is also interested in the race. http://odili.net/news/source/2013/jul/5/508.html |
All of you just yapping what you have no clue about. The man himself stated clearly on facebook why he moved his cement factory from Abia to Cross River. He was challenged by Abia youths why he wants to be governor and yet did not site a big investment in his state. He them disclosed the reason (political wrangling with the governor and govt land allocation) and promised that most of his workers (low, middle and possible high level) will be Abians. He had a fed govt license to establish his factory at Arochukwu but had to move the location for obvious political reasons. Let me find the post on facebook. |

Campaign time in Poland. In saner climes, people work and convince people to elect them, not bribe or intimidate people to select them.

Rare Diamond: WHY DID BOKO HARAM KILLED A WHOPPING 10 YAROBA TRADERS GOING ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS ?So you are only concerned that Yoruba traders were killed? I would like to get your opinion on the killing of Igbo and middle belt traders by the same Boko Haram. |
Meanwhile, 10 SW agric produce traders killed in the North and their corpses returned to Ibadan recently. |
A little bit surprised that with all the land in SW (specifically Oyo State), the people are still food insufficient. How is the situation in SE where agricultural land may be an issue? How about SS (there is ample land in some areas, especially Cross River). What is the south doing about the dependency for a number of key food produce from the North? |
Boko Haram: Food scarcity looms in S’West Our Reporter July 4, 2013 1 Comment » Boko Haram: Food scarcity looms in S’West From YINKA FABOWALE, Ibadan Nigerians, especially those in the South West, should brace up for an imminent shortage of foodstuff or prepare to pay more for the little available ones. That is the message from traders from the South who source for goods in the northern part of the country, believed to be the food basket of the country. They vowed never to go to the North to buy goods until insecurity in the area is fully brought under control. The threat came in the aftermath of Friday killing of 10 traders from Bodija market, Ibadan, Oyo State capital, allegedly by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State. Already, the specter of violence in the region had provoked an increase in the cost of some foodstuff such as beans, maize, sorghum, millet and rice in markets in Ibadan. The South depends largely on the North for supplies of foodstuff including beans, sorghum, millet, tomatoes, pepper, yam and cattle, which are cultivated and reared in commercial quantity there. It is therefore an open secret that when the North sneezes, the South catches cold. Following the latest pogrom, Yoruba traders under the auspices of Bodija Market Traders Association had sworn that none of their members would henceforth go to Borno and other hotbeds of Boko Haram until peace and order are restored. The implication of this is that once the existing stock is exhausted, there would be little or no replenishment, as their Hausa counterparts in the same trade, who might have the opportunity of still bringing foodstuff in could sell at arbitrary prices in line with the economic law of demand and supply. Secretary of the association, Mr. Sola Faribido, said the latest killing of their colleagues was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. “This is the second time they will kill our people this year alone. In May they killed four and last Friday, 10. We cannot continue to risk our lives and we had put a stop to such business trips until we heard the news that the security agencies had chased them (Boko Haram) out of the place. That was what emboldened those who met their untimely death to go on that trip -now see the result!”, the traders’ scribe lamented. He confirmed the sudden hike in prices of some foodstuff including a species of beans referred to as ewa oloyin in Yoruba as well as rice and sorghum. He said with only their Hausa counterparts able to interact with their kinsmen and thus manage to bring few goods from the North, supply would be low and this was bound to affect prices as it could not meet the demand by consumers. He said, “Once they monopolise the trade, they can afford to sell at exorbitant prices.” The market leader urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts at crushing the Boko Haram insurgents and restore normalcy in the troubled region, so that economic activities could resume in full. A trader in the market, Alhaja Medinat Makinde, told Daily Sun that since the tragic incident, the prices of foodstuff in the market had shot up. According to her, the price of beans had jumped from N350 to N500. A market survey also revealed that the price of white beans rose from N220 to N240, rice from N340 to N360. A shopper and student of the University of Ibadan, Mr. Julius Eyebiokin, corroborated Daily Sun’s findings, saying he was shocked at the price hike when he went for shopping yesterday. Meanwhile, the market, which initially experienced a lull in the morning, was in full swing by afternoon. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/boko-haram-food-scarcity-looms-in-swest/

http://odili.net/news/source/2013/jul/3/609.html Ekiti: Man beats wife to death, buries her Written by Sam Nwaoko - Ado-Ekiti Wednesday, July 3, 2013 advertisement THE police in Ekiti State have moved into Igbemo-Ekiti community in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, to unravel the reasons a man, Mr Adewale Daramola, popularly known as Wasco, allegedly beat his wife to death. Daramola, sources also alleged, did not just beat his wife, Iyabo, to death, but also buried her the same day, to the chagrin of the people of the community and Iyabo's relations. The woman, said to be about 38 years, had three children (two boys and one girl) from the union. The sources alleged that after the incident, which occurred on Monday at their residence at Ijan Road, in Igbemo-Ekiti, Daramola ran away, with the sources claiming that he ran into the bush to escape arrest. It was gathered that the police from Iworoko Police Station had, however, moved into the area in search of the suspect, with sources saying that the policemen had laid siege for Daramola since he bolted from the community on Monday. The man, according to sources, was a motorcycle repairer and farmer. However, at the time of filing this report, sources in the community told the Nigerian Tribune that the suspect had been arrested by the police and was being detained at the Iworoko Police Station. Reacting, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Victor Babayemi, confirmed the incident, but said he was yet to get the details. |

http://www.punchng.com/news/africa/nigerian-professor-wins-karl-jaspers-prize-in-germany/ Nigerian professor wins Karl Jaspers prize in Germany July 2, 2013 by Agency Reporter 2 Comments A Nigerian professor, Chibueze Udeani, has won the 2013 renowned German philosopher, Karl Jasper prize on philosophy in Oldenburg, Germany. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Karl Jasper Foundation was established 20 years ago by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oldenburg to give awards to outstanding academicians from different parts of the world. Udeani was also recently inaugurated as the first black professor of Theology in the University of Wurzburg, Germany. He was chosen based on his various research and publications on African culture and religion. Speaking at the ceremony in Oldenburg, the founding father of the foundation, Prof Rudolf Lippe, said Udeani´s publications were in line with the theory of the late Jasper (1883 to 1969). According to him, the theory of Jasper preaches mutual coexistence and dialogue among different cultures and people of the world. Lippe criticised the theory of the late American philosopher, Samuel Huntington, who said the world of 21st century would be characterised with conflicts through diverse cultures and religions. The 76-year-old professor of philosophy, however, appealed for mutual coexistence among different cultures as this would ensure peace in the world. The Vice-Chancellor of Oldenburg University, Prof. Bernd Siebenhuner, expressed delight that the university was chosen for the foundation. Siebenhuner said the university and the German government had built a centre in memory of the late philosopher, adding that it would be opened in September. Udeani, who expressed delight on his nomination, described the award as a reward for hard work. |
