How do you even compare your photo with the OP's, where one man was genuflected (kneeling down in complete respect), completely ignored for a handshake, and actually being pointed and laughed at?

Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi

Five persons were allegedly shot and critically wounded while some houses were set ablaze following a violence which erupted on Friday in Ilupeju Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State over chieftaincy tussle.

Our correspondent gathered that the Apeju of Ilupeju, Oba Olaleye Oniyelu, was chased out of the palace while the palace was attacked by irate youths, who were against the choice of Mr. Israel Ojo, who the monarch had planned to install as the Olugbosu, a traditional chieftaincy title in the town.

The title, which is said to be the third in rank to the monarch, was said to have been in contention for three years.

The Oba was said to have been ferried away from the palace by his loyalists but he told our correspondent on the telephone that he was in the palace as at 4:45 pm.

It was also gathered that some hoodlums set some houses ablaze as the riot raged in the town.

A resident of the town, who identified himself as Dayo, told our correspondent that while the monarch's choice is Ojo, the people of the town had wanted one Mr. Aseperi, who they said was more qualified for the title.

He said the monarch's choice, Ojo, was dancing to the palace for his inauguration on Friday morning when some of the people following him started shooting.

According to him, some people were hit by the bullets and this resulted in the crisis that engulfed the town.

But another source said some hoodlums had laid in ambush for Ojo when he was on his way to the palace.

It was gathered that the intervention of the police prevented the crisis from causing more damage to lives and property.

However, the Oba denied either causing the crisis or being chased away from the palace.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, who confirmed the crisis, said 22 persons had been arrested in connection with the crisis.

Rape of ex-corps member: Monarch knows fate June 4

From BAMIGBOLA GBOLAGUNTE, Osogbo

The traditional ruler of Ilowa in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun state, Oba Adebukola Alli, who is on trial before a High Court in Osogbo for alleged rape of a former Youth Corps member, Miss Helen Okpara, will know his fate on June 4 as the court delivers judgment in the case.

During the nearly two years trial, the health of the monarch, who had been remanded in prison custody, deteriorated and on two occasions, he travelled abroad for medical treatment.

The embattled traditional ruler of an Ijesha-speaking community, in the eastern part of the state had on one occasion, slumped inside the court during proceedings.

Despite the weighty allegation leveled against the monarch, his subjects still admire him and have vowed to ensure that he continues to rule the town.

A 23-year-old former member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who served in his domain, Helen Okpara, had alleged that the Oba had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. Although the monarch denied the allegation, Okpara in her evidence, gave a blow-by-blow account of how she was allegedly raped inside the private residence of the traditional ruler in Osogbo.

Her words: “The monarch came over me and I panicked and ran into a toilet where he struggled with my clothes and pulled it off. He collected my clothes and said he would soak them in water. He came inside the room, switched off the light, and struggled with me on the bed; and that was how he raped me. I kept shouting but the Oba told me that nobody would hear me. And after, I noticed that something was dropping from my private part.”

Narrating her ordeal in the hands of the royal father in one of the court sittings, Okpara said: “I was engaged by the monarch to distribute forms for a computer training he organized. After distributing the training form to the participants, I told the Oba that we were through for the day and he said I should wait, that he was going to drop me off on the way to my house. So, I waited for him and he drove me in his car but when we got to the front of my house, he said I would have to follow him to Osogbo for registration of the forms, because the state government was expecting the forms.”

She stated further: “I told the monarch that it was late and that I couldn’t make it to Osogbo but he promised to bring me back to the village no matter how late. When we got to his house in Osogbo, he didn’t mention anything about the registration of the forms, so I told him I wanted to leave but he said it was already late and that he couldn’t risk driving at night.

“I told the Oba to drop me in front of a police station, that I would find my way home, but he refused. Instead, he went inside a room and came out with a bundle of N200 notes and threw it at me, saying that I should collect it, because he was impressed with my performance at the computer-training centre. But I told him I didn’t need his money.”

According to Okpara, Oba Alli went in with the money and when he returned, he had undressed, adding: “When I told him I was leaving, he said I wasn’t going back that night and that he had tried many ways to get at me but I always turned down his advances. He threatened to harm me that night.”

However, the monarch in his defense, told the court that he had sexual intercourse with Okpara on several occasions before the one that landed him in trouble.

He said: “Helen is my girl friend and both of us have been enjoying ourselves without any problem. I don’t know why she decided to turn things against me.”

At the last hearing of the case, E.A Gbadegesin, counsel to the monarch, said that he had filed a written address on the matter which had been confirmed by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the state Ministry of Justice. Gbadegesin urged the court to discharge the accused monarch and dismiss the claims of the prosecution.

But leading other counsels from the state Ministry of Justice, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr. Dapo Adeniji, said he had proof that the monarch committed the offence and urged the court to expedite action on the judgment.

Consequently, the trial Judge, Mr Justice Oyejide Falola, fixed Tuesday, June 4, for judgment.

Another Oba Behaving Badly: Charged Over Rape Of Youth Corper

Police have started investigation of a traditional ruler in Osun State, the Alowa of Ilowa in Obokun Local Government Area of the state, Adebukola Alli, following allegation of rape levelled against him by a youth corps member serving in his domain.

The 23-year-old corps member, in a petition to the state secretariat of the National Youth Service Corps in Osogbo, narrated how the monarch allegedly violated her at his residence in Osogbo.

The victim, who is currently serving at a community school in Ilowa, where the monarch rules, alleged that Mr Alli forced her into his private room where he defiled her.

The petition reads, in part: "I was raped by the Alowa of Ilowa on Friday, March 25. Before then, I had been introduced to the monarch during the last INEC registration exercise.

"One day, on my way from the school, Oba Alli gave me a ride and told me that he wanted me to be a computer facilitator for the schools in the community. That was after he got to know that I was computer literate and we drew a plan on the format the assignment would take." She explained that she later had a session with the students and after introducing the system to them, the traditional ruler offered to take her back to school. But instead of dropping her at the school, he reportedly took her to his residence in Osogbo, a few kilometers to her place of primary assignment.

"He said I should not worry, that he would bring me back home and eventually we arrived at his residence in Osogbo where he entertained me. It was getting late and I wanted to go home as he started to caress me. I got up begging him, but he turned down my pleas," she stated.

She explained further that the monarch later stripped her and went outside to soak her clothes, stressing that before he came back, she had locked the door.

Police probe

She further stated that the threat by the monarch to kill her, should he force the door open, made her to open it and he consequently entered the room where she was allegedly raped.

Efforts made to speak with the traditional ruler failed, as he could not be contacted as the time of this report.

But the state coordinator of the NYSC, Henry Enyenihi, said the matter had been reported to the police as well as the national secretariat of the NYSC in Abuja. Mr Enyenihi, in an interview with newsmen yesterday, said the NYSC Director General, Maharazu Tsiga had already briefed a lawyer to pursue the matter.

"It is sad that a monarch who is expected to play the role of a parent to the young corps member, is himself violating her womanhood," he said.

Although Olusegun Solomon, the state's Commissioner of Police is currently on election duty outside the state, but a senior police officer confirmed the report.
