Tragedy has struck at Elere area of Lagos State after a Police corporal shot his constable colleague dead following a heated argument over the sharing of bribe collected from motorists. However, Police authorities in the state said the shooting was an accidental discharge when the policemen were playing with a cup of tea. The shooting which reportedly occurred at a beer parlour where the policemen were drinking, sent other customers scampering for safety to avoid being hit by stray bullets. Some of the panic-stricken customers reportedly sustained injuries as they ran in different directions. The policemen (names withheld) had gone out, Sunday, on a stop-and-search operation around the area between 9a.m and noon, after which they went to a beer parlour to share their proceeds. The corporal was said to have given the constable an undisclosed amount which he (the constable) refused, arguing that it was far below what the corporal took. A hot argument soon ensued. Apparently seeing the attitude of the constable as an affront, the corporal allegedly shot him at close range and left him in the pool of his own blood. However, Police authorities in Lagos described the shooting as an accidental discharge. Police spokesperson, Mr Olubode Ojajuni, said the two policemen were playing with a cup of tea as friends when the rifle which the corporal was carrying went off and hit the constable. "We are already investigating what really happened and at the end of the day if we find the corporal wanting, we will charge him with negligence because he was trained on how to handle guns," he said. |
Obodo was on for 90 minutes as Udinese pipped Sporting 1-0 in Lisbon. Solid performance in a role that we should play him in. Though not spctacular. Oba Oba scored one, almost scored another and was on for 90 minutes as Inter ploughed Shakhtar 2-0 in DOnetsk. Bros Aghagowa wasn't listed. |
Don't agree with you about India. Their large population is largely semi-educated and as a result always nurse the hope for a better future. Can't forment trouble with such a population. WOuld have been easier if they were uneducated. |
It'd be better for his career if he goes. But there's really no point going now as they don't have any serious engagements for another year and half, so he'd vanish from the limelight... |
I agree with almost everything JOftech said except the very last line. In this country at the moment (sadly) whether we like it or not there are vested interests in a lot of things who find our inate tribalism as a reafy tool for any atrocity they want to commit. The point being that we won't have a revolution that will be widespread. I don't see the conditions existing or being created again. We had 2 chances in the last 15 years, and as a people we collectively stood bye and watched both chances slip away: the first chance was in 1993 when the election was annulled. Abiola (RIP) should have been in Nigeria on August 27, not in the US. Had he been sworn-in in Lagos as they were swearing in Sonekan in Abuja, the history would have been very different. The second chance was in May 2004. During the petrol strike. The NLC actually came to within hours of bringing this government to its knees. Then something happened. And the moment was lost. It will be very difficult to recreate such a scenario again. Be that as it may, I think the world (and Nigeria included) has gone beyond violent revolutions. Like it or not, the most likely scenario for our country is to develop along the Indian line, that is an affluent and well developed upper and middle class that will comprise some 30-40% of the population and an impoverished lower class that will be invisible to the rest of the world, but will be in the majority. Now once again we have a role model to learn from. India has a poorly developed social system at best, and we can learn from them and improve it in order to carry that lower class along. However, that is a Herculean task, and personally, I am not really an advocate of a system that supports people who don't want to work (problem in the US), I prefer a system of if you don't want to work, you don't want to eat (China). |
If memory serves me correct, the norm nowadays is reveal as much as possible, and films are supposed to imitate what obtains in real life, so... |
dile: ![]() Starting Line-ups: Chelsea Petr Cech Paulo Ferreira John Terry Asier Del Horno William Gallas Claude Makelele Frank Lampard Didier Drogba Damien Duff Arjen Robben Eidur Gudjohnsen Arsenal Jens Lehmann Kolo Touré Ashley Cole Cesc Fabregas Thierry Henry P. Senderos Dennis Bergkamp Robert Pires Etame Lauren Matthieu Flamini F. Ljungberg Which looks more like the first team here? I am sticking my neck out on this one: Chelsea aren't going to beat Arsenal on the 21st. Best result for the Blues: a draw. And yes, I know it is in Stamford Bridge. |
Imnakoya:The Nigerian private sector is very vibrant and bursting with ideas. It has been allowed to grow. The implication from my view point is this: Nigerians when placed under the right conditions can be their own masters, and good at what they do. Does that answer you? So if we take the private sector mentality to the public sector, the only way is forward. obong:There are some who will point at India and say that it has always been a democracy. Answer to that is this: there are 2 Indias. The fast developing one which the world sees, and the India still stuck in the 1950s, which the world doesn't see. That is the India outside Mumbai, New Delhi and Calcutta. |
Saying that teams go out for a win in the Charity Shield (shey na Community dem dey call am now) is like saying that Nigeria will go all out for the win against the Beninoise clubside tommorow. We all know that. |
Take a look at the private sector in Nigeria over the past few years and you have your answer. |
hot-angel:But he has been the chairman of the US Federal Reserve since before I was born, and to hold a political position that long in that country? He must be good. Wait a minute, HE IS GOOD! |
Arsenal outplayed? I saw a different set of highlights probably, maybe a clip of last season's 2-2 minus one of the Arsenal goals, but wait, in the clip I saw, Hleb came on at half time, and there was no Vieira. The point is this, Chelsea ovbiously took the match a great deal more seriously than Arsenal did, as evidenced from the starting line-ups fielded by both managers. Then add the fact that at half time Arsenal made a lot of changes (a lot of changes at the same time tend to has more of a disruptive influence for those who didn't know). Not to take anything away from Chelsea, they played very well, but to say that they outplayed Arsenal is an injustice. But then look under the veil... Arsenal in the second half displayed a new tactical set-up which we haven't seen from them since the days of Petit-Vieira, a variant of 4-3-3 that is deadly on the counter, Chelsea played the same old 4-4-2 through-out. Let us look at the other underlying currents, that match finally convinced me that SWP is not needed at Chelsea, so asically, we are not going to see a new Chelsea from a tactical view point. Yes Chelsea is difficult to break down, you have to hand it to them that they are a great defensive outfit (and IMO that is the foundation of a great team), but it is ovbious that sound managers have gotten in on the fact that Makelele (not Lampard) is the engine room of that team! After having made that rant, I think it is time to name the team that I think is the team to beat in England this season: watch out for Liverpool. On my way to work now, I'll explain later. |
@ hot-angel and toyosi, beauty is not the issue here. Have you ever seen Alan Greenspan? |
Yes, that article from The Guardian UK... Was a great article, and considering the fact that that paper is one of the best read on the planet did a lot to bolster our image. Oknjo-Iweala is a prime example of how things can be when for once we decide to do things right. For example I still can't figure out why they keep hiring thugs to run our sports ministry. If you want to get the best results in any sector, put a technocrat, a professional in charge and provided the person is focused (you can never rule that out), you will have results. Another good example (although debatable) is that our banking system has improved since Soludo took over as CBN governor, with all his theories. But then that is a story for another day... |
That's why it's called Film noir pretty one... |
I saw the DVD of Dr. Zhivago today. One of the greatest movies of all time. I am watching it now. ![]() |
Seun:Sorry, if I do that, I am liable to get shot! |
Yes, the elections will be violent, but not the kind of massive violence that some people are talking up... Part of the learning process associated with this democracy thing if you ask me... |
I've downloaded the extended highlights of the game. Will watch it and give my opinion later in the evening. |
Sorry I didn't watch the match, so I am not in a position to analyse it until I've seen it. I'm downloading it now, when I watch it in the evening, I'll run a comment. |
Statistics are like a bikini - what they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital! |
AU Snubs Nigeriahttp://allafrica.com/stories/200508100044.html These [people] don't understand that if they keep insisting on veto power, they will never get anything. Make haste slowly. |
I've been away for some days, and I can see that someone heas been having a field day... I'll be back in a few hours |
A name change for the bleeding company doesn't make a difference at all. When they break the company up, then we can start talking... |
pintos:Yes, I love Nigeria. No I don't think you do. pintos:Many Nigerians in Nigeria actually realise that something is wrong with the country. And hello, we are also smart enough to realise that doing something about it doesn't involve running outside to another man's land and washing our diry linen in public. pintos:Speak English man and stop speaking wedding. What does that statement mean in whatever context? |
pintos is one of those who loves to stay where they are and throw stones... Achebe, sorry to say is senile. |
Anyways, all that's a matter of conjecture... The team to watch in England this season IMO is Liverpool. Why? They have a good first team and greater squad depth than any other now, and then a master tactician on the bench... It will be interesting. |
Yeah right someone hacked the site... Bullsh1t! Nigeria FA (NFA) chairman Ibrahim Galadima says he regrets "the administrative lapse" which has raised doubts about Obafemi Martins age. That repsonse by Galadima is a classic example of the buck-passing that categorises the NFA. It is pitiful! |
Did you guys hear of NFA's latest f*ck up? About Obafemi Martins? In ogni caso complimenti a Oba Oba perchè i suoi anni li porta bene.. Basicaly it says that on the NFA website it says that Martins was born on 1/5/1978, - 27 years while Inter's website says 28/10/1984. NFA is full of incompetent fools! What kind of site is this? http://www.nigeriafa.com ? Then look at the offending page: http://www.nigeriafa.com/eagles%20players.htm Notice the discrepancy about Seyi Olofinjana? They have given Garba Lawal and Martins the same date of birth as Isaac Okoronkwo. In real life (not NFA's site), Lawal was born in 1973. You can also read on the website that Julius Aghahowa was born on the 121st of February. Can you imagine? I am so pissed off!!! |
I'm even surprised that people answered. Such a guy is the kind that should be told: Go f*ck yourself! |
