I explained the japanese flag (land of the rising sun) with the sun in the middle. The french flag represents the frenchr evolution , which goes to my central point that it was created byt he people, for the people and to represent them, unlike ours which was given to us by colonialists.

as for austria Together with the Danish flag, the Austrian flag is said to be among the oldest national flag designs in the world.

According to legend, the flag was invented by Duke Leopold V of Austria (1157-1194) while he was involved in a fierce battle during the Crusades. After the battle of Acre, his white battledress was completely drenched in blood, but when he removed his belt the cloth underneath was untouched by it. So taken was he by this singular sight that he adopted the colours and scheme as his banner.

In fact, the flag was designed in the 13th century by Duke Frederick II of Austria (1210-1246; known as 'Frederick the Quarrelsome'), the last of the Babenberg dynasty. Frederick sought greater independence from the Holy Roman Emperor. To this end, he had a new coat of arms designed: a red field with a silver fess. The oldest source for the new flag is contained in a seal kept in the monastery of Lilienfeld (Lower Austria), dated November 30, 1230.

My point is they come from within and country and unifies people in a sybol, and name, they created

SportsLaloko: Angola must be stopped at all cost by Chxta(op): 12:36pm On Aug 03, 2005
A CAF instructor and immediate past head of the technical department of the NFA, Kashimawo Laloko has declared to KICK OFF that every thing possible must be done to stop Angola from going to Germany 2006 World Cup finals at the expense of Nigeria.

He said in Lagos: “We have reached a stage where we have to play the politics of the game. We cannot run away from it, there should be mathematical manipulation because the situation we are in is very dicey. It calls for serious mathematics now.”

The controversial football administrator further opened up to KICK OFF, “We cannot fold our arms and see Angola qualify at our expense; it will be an insult on us to see them go to Germany. It is not going to be in our overall interest not to be at the World Cup. Equally Angola cannot serve the interest of Africa better than Nigeria at the World Cup”’

Laloko, who is also a director of Pepsi Academy, Agege at the outskirts of Lagos told KICK OFF that he will be ready to assist the country play the necessary role in her World Cup pursuit.

“I would want to help my country actualize her World Cup dream, and I know what I can do in this regard, but I would wish to work from outside the system, not inside it,” he insisted.

He also urged Nigerians to put the refusal of Philip Troussier to accept the job of coaching the Super Eagles behind them.

“Troussier was not sure of our position regarding the World Cup qualification, and that was why he declined the offer .He should be free to take any decision he feels is best for him,” he added.

Didn't want to contribute here at first, but here goes...

What is the meaning of the French flag? Then the Japanese? The the Austrian?

These flags are more boring than the Nigerian, but have been there for 214 years (French which is the youngest). So?

As for those who say we should change the name of the country:
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other word would smell as sweet.

Take a good look at Gadaffi's track record and you'll find that he is interested first in Libya before any other. Yes, African states are (mere) geographical expressions, but these expressions have come to stay, so we should get used to it.

The article is true, and I am glad to see our diplomats for once thinking in the interests of the Nigerian nation, and not in the narrow interests of the African continent.
My personal motto when it comes to such issues is Nigeria first! That has been the motto of all the others. It's time we realise that that is the way the world works.

Three Americans and three Nigerians are traveling by a US train to a conference. At the station, the three Americans each buy tickets and watch as the three Nigerians buy only a single ticket. "How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asked an American. "Watch the ride my youth !" answers a Nigerian. They all board the train. The Americans take their respective seats but all three Nigerians cram into a restroom and close the door behind them.

Shortly after the train is departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the restroom door and says, "Ticket, please." The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on. The Americans saw this and agreed it was quite a clever idea. So after the conference, the Americans decide to copy the Nigerians on the return trip and save some money.

When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for the return trip. To their astonishment, the Nigerians don`t buy a ticket at all. "How are you going to travel without a ticket," asks one perplexed American. "Watch the ride my youth !! " says a Nigerian. When they board the train the three Americans cram into a restroom and the three Nigerians cram into another one nearby.

The train departs. Shortly afterward, one of the Nigerians leaves his restroom and walks over to the restroom where the Americans are hiding. He knocks on the door and says, "Ticket, please".
Jokes EtcRe: Lead Implants: A Cure for Terrorism by Chxta(op): 10:02pm On Aug 01, 2005
In related news, Professors Yevgeny Kalashnikov, Binjamin Moshe Uzi and Jason Gatling have announced that in independent international research funded by The Agency For A Humane Cure For Terrorism (a non-governmental agency with headquarters at Langley, Virginia) have announced that although they reached the same conclusions as Drs. Cole and Browning, they have found that for the lead injection to be fully effective, it has to be taken in doses called calibres.

They have thus drawn up the following schedule of treatment:

1) First dose: .22 calibre injection to the upper torso. This should result in a drastic slowdown of terrorist activity. The subject should rapidly approach a dream-like state and become amenable to bed rest at a fine bed and breakfast. Suggested locations are Guantanamo Bay and Leavenworth, both known for their excellent facilities and courteous staff.

2) Should first dose be insufficient, the learned professors suggest an upgrade to .45 calibre in the same area. Such "violent" patients should then be transported immediately to a facility such as the Lubyanka, well known for its ability to handle such persons with equanimity.

In the event of the calibre doses prove insufficient to calm down the terrorists, the professors suggest an increase to a different dose they have christened "millimeters".

Wenger looks to Viera to get over Vieira

Reports last week suggested that the Arsenal camp is suffering from depression following the departure of Patrick Vieira to Juventus.

True, he's been an important player for the Highbury club and the Gunners may struggle to replace him, but surely manager Arsene Wenger's suggestion of hiring professional help to counsel those players hit hardest by Pat's departure is a little over the top.

Wenger now seems to have taken the matter of replacing Vieira a little too literally. The French boss is currently pursuing Patrick's Uruguay international almost-namesake, goalkeeper Sebastien Viera.

Is this the only way to get over the 'real' Vieira leaving? Will the players notice the difference? Surely Wenger can't pull the wool over his staff's eyes as easily as this....

Fight Club

Ageing Lazio captain Paulo di Canio showed he's lost none of his fire with the onset of old age, by sparking an impressive 22-man scrap in Wednesday's Intertoto Cup semi final against Marseille.

The Roman managed to kick off the brawl after twice tangling with Marseille players in the first half. The second incident involved French defender Abdoulaye Meité; head butts were exchanged and four players were booked, before Di Canio saw enough sense to actually do what he's paid for and score a goal.

Similar scenes were witnessed at a pre-season not-so-friendly match at Tamworth, where it was Aston Villa's, erm, 'combative,' Lee Hendrie who sparked a mass brawl. 21 players were involved as Hendrie grappled on the ground with Tamworth teenager Kyle Storer.

The pair were both dismissed by referee Rob Hyde, but not before punches were thrown. It must be the hot weather to blame.....

Strachan in nightmare start

It looks like new Celtic boss Gordon Strachan is in for a rough ride this season, judging by how stressed the wee man looks only two games into his new job.

The fiery Scotsman is already feeling the pressure of being in one of the biggest jobs in Scotland, having lost calamitously 5-0 against Artmedia Bratislava on Tuesday, and having thrown away a 3-1 lead against Motherwell to draw 4-4 on the opening day of the Scottish season.

And more bad news for wee Gord - his chief executive has spoken out and given him a vote of confidence following the poor start! And that normally means the chop isn't too far away.....

Thug of the week

Stiff competition this week (see above) for the inaugural title which 'celebrates' some of the worst indiscretions in the world of football thuggery.

But this week's award has to go to serial offender and all round hooligan, Joey Barton. The Manchester City midfielder hit the headlines again following a bust up in his team's hotel on their pre-season tour of the Far East.

Barton's candidature for the gong is undisputed, not only for fighting with a 16-year-old football supporter in the bar of his hotel, but also for managing to feast on peacemaking team-mate Richard Dunne's finger in a moment of cannibalistic madness.

This is a player who knows no limits to his methods of attack. Last year, in a 'dispute' with a youth team player, the Liverpudlian imaginatively poked a burning cigar into the youngster's eye

This time round, the 22-year-old was sent home by manager Stuart Pearce and has been fined eight week's wages. And all this even before the season has started.....

In case you don't know (shey I too dey talk grin), naval capability is of utmost importance in warfare, both ancient and modern.

Ulyesses, Agamenmon, Ajax, et al beat Hector, Priam, et al at Troy because they came by sea and laid a seige...
Darius III lost the Persian Empire to Alexander the Great because of Alexander's ability to use his navy for logistics, an ability that Darius did not have...
Mark Anthony lost his share of the Roman Empire to Octavian (later Augustus Caeser) at Actium in what is probably the greatest naval battle before Christ...

Let's jump a couple of millenia so I don't bore you...

The Confederacy lost the American Civil War because they didn't have a navy capable of lifting the blockade imposed by the Union...
The Chinese lost the Opium War to the English because the English had a navy, the Chinese had (?)...
Germany lost World War 1 and World War 2 on the Western front because they failed to master the Atlantic...
Japan lost the Pacific theatre of World War 2 because they failed to completely anihilate American naval capability at Pearl Harbour...
Argentina lost the Falkland War because of British naval mastery in and around the Magellan Straits (as well as logistics that could only have been provided by the Royal Navy)...

Closer to home...

Egypt lost the Suez War because France and Britain imposed a naval blockade, they (Egypt) wanted to lock the canal, France and Britain said no, the rest is history...
Biafra lost the war because Nigeria imposed a blockade from the Bight of Biafra!

Sorry, before someone says what about China...

China has no navy or air-force per se. What would have been the navy and/or air-force in the Chinese system is part of the Army. Thus you have the People's Liberation Army Air-force, and the People's Liberation Army Navy.

Before we end up killing ourselves on this forum, the west DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT want to give any african country any permanent seat on the security council and i will assure you they would scuttle any moves to do that. THe U.S is already promising to veto any change even though it is determined by the general assembly. The second problem comes from african nations themselves with some north african nations opposing the moves as they feel that it might make them less powerful in africa. They don't want very powerful neighbours

Like i said b/4 even if the very remote possibility of it happening comes to pass, the west would like it to be egypt and south africa( i am not asking you to give me your misguided patriotism or question mine) i am just giving you the western view of nigeria. Egypt is a friendly nation with the U.S and south africa is very stable. The west see nigeria as volatile and would not be so keen on nigeria. I am not saying they would not get it, but the probability is as remote as Africa getting a permanent seat on the security council or worse.

I have a huge favour to ask you. I haven't got credit to ring you. There are some of my friends arriving in your neighbourhood. They are very nice, polite and very religious people.

Can you please, let them stay at your house for some time?

I have given your address and telephone number to them already. I hope you won't be mad at me, but it's an urgent matter. They will not trouble you. I'm sending you a picture of them for you to easily recognize them.

They will arrive at your house with two Mercedes Benz vehicles, one white and the other green.

You can call me in case you have any reservations.

Counting on your assistance

Thanks in advance, I know you won't let me down.

Following the directive by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry constituted by the Federal Government to probe the alleged cold-blooded killing of six people at Apo in Abuja, the decomposed bodies of the Apo six were on Friday exhumed by medical personnel of the National Hospital, Abuja, for autopsy.

They were exhumed from a bush in Utako district, Abuja. During the exercise, all roads connecting the said bush were condoned off by armed policemen, under tight police security. This was witnessed by counsel to the four of the victims, Amobi Nzelu and families of the six deceased persons.

The exhumation started at about 12 noon. Medical experts from the National Hospital came with a pick-up van and an ambulance bus loaded with chemicals to douse the stench which covered the area as bodies of the Apo six were brought out of the grave one after the other.

It took about an hour and 11 minutes to exhume the bodies as the first body was brought out of the grave at about 12.05 pm, while the last one was brought out at about 1.16 p.m. The decomposed bodies were conveyed in body bags.

The six bodies were laid separately in the laboratory where the autopsy test would commence. The result of the test would be ready within the week.

Mother of the only female victim, Mrs. Monica Arebum, who maintained a visible distance from where the bodies were exhumed, said all she wanted was justice.

Manchester United are poised to make a sensational swoop for Real Madrid striker Michael Owen after the Spanish club revealed the door was open for the former Liverpool player to return to the Premiership. United boss Alex Ferguson will make a €16 million bid, according to reports.

Owen, who scored 16 goals for Real last season, has been pushed down the pecking order at the Spanish giants after the signings of Brazilians Robinho and Julio Baptista.

And the 25-year-old will be available to return to England if United can meet the €16 million buy-out clause in Owen's contract.

A senior source told British paper The Sunday Times they would not stand in Owen's way should they receive a bid for him.

"Michael is popular with the fans and he is popular with the club," said the source.

"But if he comes to us and says he believes the best thing for him is to leave, we will have to respect that."

"He has been a great servant to us, we will treat him with the utmost decency and respect," he added.

"And in the event that he decides to go, while obviously looking out for our own interests, we will be sure to look out for his too."

RAFA SNUB

Now surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu with Real's two new signings and Ronaldo and Raul both fighting for places, Owen could find himself reduced to fifth choice if he remains in the Spanish capital.

Having already been linked with former club Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle, Owen's advisers gave his old club first refusal on bringing their former hero back to Anfield.

But Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez seems to have rejected the opportunity, opting instead for Southampton striker Peter Crouch in a €10m deal.

Despite running the risk of feeling his former fans' wrath, Owen could be tempted by the United move, which would allow him to live in his luxury North Wales mansion he renovated only one hour's drive away from United's training ground.

Having lost out to Real in the Baptista saga, Arsenal could also be tempted to make a move.

EducationBanning the word "Fail" in Classrooms by Chxta(op): 2:29pm On Jul 31, 2005
The word "fail" should be banned from use in British classrooms and replaced with "deferred success" to avoid demoralizing pupils, says a group of teachers.

Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.

A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labeling children.
"We recognize that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.

"But I recognize that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.

The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.
