Politics / Nigeria At 59: The People Deserve A Nation That Can Protect Their Aspirations by Citizenshelm: 1:25pm On Oct 01, 2019
The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Danielson Akpan, GCNS, has said that Nigerians deserve a nation that can protect their aspirations.

Comrade Danielson said this on Tuesday in celebration of the nation’s 59th independence anniversary on today, October 1.

He said; “Today is another day of reflection. Nigerians and Nigeria has gone through a lot since her hard earned independence in 1960.

“Our founding fathers united their purpose, stood together for a nation we had today.

“Reflecting on the past, it is incumbent to suggest that Nigeria at 59 is in dire need of unity. Unity beyond religion, ethnicity or political affiliation.”

He added that: “To fight hunger and corruption, improve housing and social amenities, enhance education and build entrepreneurial economy.

“Security and national cohesion has been threatened due to flashes of dissent, bickering and strife. These are challenges government upon government has grappled with.

“Nigerians deserve more from this federation. Institutional capacity is what build nations. At 59, before 60, we should as a nation strengthen our institutions of governance and obey the creed of 'Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress'.

“Nigeria cannot grow in a filled with hungry and underdeveloped citizens. Corruption is one cancer that has dwarfed our process and must be fought without sacred choices.

“The people deserve an economy that can project and protect their aspirations. Our laws and obedience to them will guarantee freedom of citizens and enhance their participation in governance.

“Nigerian government, be it in the past or particularly now should have listened to the cries of yesteryears and the foreseen now. The solution to our problems can be found if the leadership commits to serving the people and Nigeria as a nation.

“We cannot continue to pretend that this giant of a nation is not sleeping.

“Our roads have collapsed, hospitals abandoned, crops have replaced drugs, rodents now have comfortable housing in the hospital wards, schools are now play fields. We should stop pretending, all is far from well.

“Our educational system is now a shadow of the good old days. Obsolete curriculum, dilapidated structures, failed managers and incompetent teachers have taken our human development for a ride. No nation can grow beyond its educational level.

“In the light of the above, we demand 20% allocation to education in the year 2020 fiscal budget from government at all levels (federal, state and local government). This must be done if our government is sincere about the development of this country.”

NANS commends Nigerians for their resilience and sacrifice, patience and prayers over the years and wish to express hope that we shall overcome. We urge all and sundry to persist and work for betterment of one another.

“Let us reminiscent on the struggles of our independence and cherish once more, and together, the diversities of our nationhood.
We should all commit to peaceful coexistence, harmonious relationship and common development.

“We challenge the government to live up to its promises, raise Nigerians from abject poverty and ensure peace and justice.

At NANS, we salute our founding fathers and plead with the PMB government to redress underdevelopment and illiteracy.

Congratulations on yet another 'Independence Day Celebration'.

May Nigeria succeed!
Happy Independence Day!.”

Religion / Some Of Us Born To Give More Love Than We Get – Pastor Fatoyinbo by Citizenshelm: 1:53pm On Sep 27, 2019
Senior pastor of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Biodun Fatoyinbo, has said that some persons are born to give more love than they would ever get in return.

Fatoyinbo, in an Instagram post on Friday, advised that people should not be bothered when they are attacked by those they have been a “huge blessing” to.

“I think some of us were born to give more love than we will ever see in return,” he said.

“Do not be bothered if those who you have been a huge blessing to turn against you because of ingratitude, envy, and Jealousy. Don’t even think about it for a second, don’t let who they are change who you are!”

Busola, wife of musician, Timi Dakolo, had in an interview in June accused Pastor Fatoyinbo of raping her while she was a teenager.

In a suit filed before the FCT High Court weeks ago, she said the defilement has adversely affected her marital sex life.

She, therefore, demanded that Fatoyinbo publishes an apology to her on the front page of at least two national newspapers.

The apology should also run on two national television stations for seven days running consecutively.

Busola also requested the court to compel Fatoyinbo to pay N10 million as cost of litigation.

In his counter-claim, Fatoyinbo prayed the court to dismiss the suit and award a cost of N50 million, jointly and severally against Busola and her solicitor.

Politics / Stop Using Gender Inequality For Political Gains - Minister To Women by Citizenshelm: 11:20am On Sep 27, 2019
Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged women in the maritime industry to stop marketing gender inequality as reason for their lack of appointments into political positions.

Speaking at the 2019 World Maritime Day celebration in Lagos on Thursday, Amaechi urged women to focus on building their competence and lifting one another.

The former Rivers State governor said women get appointments on merit.

“I don’t agree with you on the idea of gender because the struggle is not peculiar to Nigeria alone, it’s everywhere in the world. It’s about the class you belong because there are millions of women and men who are dying of hunger,” he said.

“Women get appointments because they merit the appointment. I have female friends who are very educated.

“And one is Amina Mohammed who was a special adviser to the former Secretary-General of the United Nations. It was when Mr President visited the United States and saw Amina that he was impressed with her and made her a minister.

“Amina got to where she is today because she has a vision and wouldn’t listen to distractions. Life is about courage.

“So I will urge women in maritime to stop begging because it is their entitlement. Women are manipulators and can manipulate men to sign what they wouldn’t want to sign. Women are more brilliant.”

Minister of state for transportation, Gbemisola Saraki, who also spoke at the event, called for an increased amount of scholarship and mentorship to boost female participation in the shipping sector.

Politics / Ex-Aides Going Into Hiding: Senator Okorocha Reacts To Report by Citizenshelm: 5:44pm On Sep 26, 2019
Former Imo State Governor, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has denied report claiming that some of his aides had gone into hiding to evade arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A report had alleged that some aides of the former governor have fled the state for fear of being rounded up.

Okorocha, however, in a statement on Thursday by his media aide, Sam Onwuemeodo, described the report as “totally false”.

He said the report did not name any of his aides alleged to have gone into hiding.

“The report has no iota of truth because no name was mentioned. In the whole story, the reporter could not mention any of the aides or the EFCC officials who came to Imo, to arrest them,” Okorocha said.

“The report did not mention the offence which my aides committed, that made EFCC to come to Imo.”

The former governor said the purveyors of the report were being mischievous.

“EFCC does not need to come to Imo for any of my aides; all the agency needs to do is to send an invitation and it will be honoured,” he said.

Politics / Over 300 Nigerians To Be Back From South Africa On Tuesday by Citizenshelm: 8:19pm On Sep 15, 2019
No less than 320 Nigerians are expected back in the country on Tuesday amid xenophobic attacks on foreigners in South Africa.

According to reports, the new set of returnees will arrive the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard a Boeing 777 – 300 airline operated by Air Peace.

Some 187 Nigerians had arrived from South Africa last Wednesday.

Chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyema, told newsmen that efforts are on to deploy a bigger aircraft which can hold up to 367 passengers.

“We are fully set for Tuesday, our aircraft and crew will leave about four o clock and get to South Africa about 9 o’clock for the operations. We hope about 350 Nigerians are ready so that we fly enough passengers not to leave the aircraft empty,” he said.

Nigeria’s Consul General in Johannesburg, Godwin Adama, had said on Friday that many of the returnees missed the first flight because of their uncoordinated attitudes.

He said the delay in the evacuation process was caused by misplacement of travel documents as required by South African immigration laws.

Sports / I’m Not Surprised Nigeria Want Tammy Abraham – Lampard by Citizenshelm: 12:50pm On Sep 15, 2019
Chelsea head coach, Frank Lampard, says he is not surprised Nigeria are chasing Tammy Abraham as a valuable addition to the Super Eagles, Igbere TV reports.

Lampard spoke after the Chelsea Academy graduate scored a hat-trick to help the Blues win 5-2 at Wolves on Saturday.

Igbere TV reports that Abraham rose to the top of the Premier League scoring charts on seven goals as the treble at Molineux added to braces in each of his previous two appearances.

The 21-year-old, who won the two senior England caps he has to date in friendlies in 2017, was not part of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for the recent international break.

Asked about Abraham potentially being considered for the next England squad, Lampard said: “The way he is going, it is obviously going to put him into that bracket.

“Without telling Gareth what to do… But to score seven goals in three games and be top-scorer and play with the quality he is playing his all-round game…

“The three different types of goals he scored were exactly what you want from Tammy. A messy one, a good header and then a fantastic feet and finish goal.

“He has to sustain it and has to get even better. He has to be hungry, which I know he is. He can never rest on his laurels because there is more work to be done.

“And that England squad is a few weeks away. So he needs to keep playing at that level and he’ll have a great chance, I’d suggest.”

Nigeria have not given up on persuading Abraham to switch to the three-time African champions.

When Lampard was asked if he had spoken to the player about that, he said: “No.

“I don’t really. That’s obviously not my choice. I know Tammy has been in England squads before and I’m not surprised Nigeria would want him. But it’s a question for him I suppose”.

Another Chelsea Academy graduate, Fikayo Tomori, scored his first Chelsea goal with a stunner against Wolves on Saturday.

Nigeria are looking at adding him too to their squad.

Former Chelsea man, Ola Aina, has already switched from England to Nigeria.

As did former international, Victor Moses, who currently plays at Fenerbahçe, on loan from Chelsea.

Crime / South Florida Pastor Accused Of Raping Two Girls by Citizenshelm: 5:57pm On Sep 14, 2019
A preacher has been arrested after police claimed he repeatedly raped two young girls in his bedroom and forced them to witness each other’s assault.

The girls are 9 and 10 years old.

Yunior Beltres, a 54-year-old citizen of the Dominican Republic, was charged with two counts of sexual battery on a minor, police in Miami, Florida said.

The girls, whose relationship to Beltres was not disclosed, reported the abuse to police in July. They said the assaults occurred in May and June at his home in the 300 block of Northeast 118th Terrace in Miami, the Miami Herald reported.

Beltres, a preacher at Evangelistic Ministry of Columns of Fire, also known as Ministerio Evangelistico Columnas de Fuego. Beltres has been affiliated with the organization since at least 1996, according to the records.

A woman who answered the phone number listed for the religious organization on Friday said that Beltres was a pastor at the congregation and that the accusations against him were false. She did not provide her name and hung up on a reporter.

In the voice greeting for the phone number, Beltres identifies himself as a pastor and wishes blessings on his callers.

Videos posted to Facebook by members of the congregation show Beltres delivering impassioned and booming sermons in Spanish.

In one video, posted Aug. 15, Beltres preaches about responding to critics of his faith. He comments on the “lost souls” of society.

“Even if they reject you a thousand times or spit in your face — even if they call you a crazy fanatic,” he said, yelling. “Yes, I’m a crazy person of the third heaven.

“There are a thousand lost souls out there, but you all are pleased that you are saved,” he added.

Beltres, accompanied by an attorney, turned himself into authorities Thursday. He was being held Friday in Miami-Dade’s Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with no bond, said the Miami Herald.

According to the arrest report, the 9-year-old victim told detectives Beltres had raped her several times in June, inside his bedroom, in front of the older girl.

Police said the 9-year-old girl told detectives Beltres also touched her breasts with his mouth and his hands.

The arrest report stated that Beltres surrendered to authorities Thursday with his attorney present and invoked his right to remain silent.

He appeared in court Friday and was ordered held without bond.
