A Magistrate Court sitting at Rijiyar-Zaki area of Kano State has granted N500,000 bail to a popular Hausa singer, Naziru Ahmad, better known as Sarkin Waka.

Ahmad is said to be the chief singer of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.



Sarkin Waka was arrested by the Kano State Censorship Board over the release of two uncensored albums and operating an illegal studio.

The singer was accused of operating an unlicensed studio from his residence, an act which contravened the laws of the Kano State Censorship Board.

The presiding judge, Aminu Fagge, in granting the bail, said the accused must provide three sureties, one of whom must be a Grade Level 12 civil servant in Kano State.

The judge said of the other two sureties, one must be a ward head of the area where Sarkin Waka resides and the other must have evidence of three years tax clearance.



Executive Secretary of the Kano State Censorship Board, Isma’il Afakallah, denied allegations that the singer was being victimised for criticising Governor Abdullahi Ganduje in the video.

“We are not victimising anyone. Whoever abides by the rules of the board can conduct his business without having any problem,” he said.

No life lost in collapsed building in Enugu – Police

The Police Command in Enugu State has said that no life was lost in the collapsed three-story building under construction in Enugu metropolis.


The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said this in a statement in Enugu on Friday.

Amaraizu said that the incident took place on Wednesday around Monarch Avenue axis of Independence Layout in Enugu metropolis, 042hits.com

“From preliminary investigations, it is clear that no life was lost in the incident and no other property was lost rather than the collapsed building under construction.

“The members of the public should discountenance any other information to the contrary on the incident being circulated in the social media,’’ he said.

According to him, the cause of the incident is yet to be established.



“Investigation on the incident is still on as the Command plans to get to the bottom of the matter,’’ he said.

However, an eyewitness, Mr Clifford Eze, said that the collapsed might be due to use of sub-standard building materials and engineers to execute the project.

Eze, who is one of the residents of the area, said that the blockwork for the uncompleted building had already been completed and was at the verge of being roofed.

A physiotherapist, Dr Michael Egwu, has said that back pain, neck pain, urinary retention, spinal dysfunction, and cervical headache can be treated effectively through physical and manual methods of physiotherapy, 042hits.com


Egwu made the assertion in his address during the Nwuga Physiotherapy Foundation Distinguished Annual Lecture on Thursday in Ibadan.

Nigerians repatriated from South Africa after attacks

Nigeria began repatriating more than 600 of its citizens from South Africa following a wave of deadly xenophobic attacks that frayed relations among neighbouring nations.

Private Nigerian airline Air Peace volunteered to fly people for free back to the commercial capital Lagos on Wednesday.

A flight carrying 189 Nigerians landed in the commercial capital Lagos late Wednesday, with some of those onboard punching the air and singing the national anthem while waving pictures of burnt shops.

"I ran for my life, they would have killed me," Samson Aliyu, a clothes seller who lived in South Africa for two years, told AFP news agency.

"They burnt my shop, everything," he added.

The repatriation came after riots in Pretoria and Johannesburg killed at least 12 people as 1,000 foreign-owned businesses were targeted. The nationalities of those killed have not been announced but Nigerians, Ethiopians, Congolese, and Zimbabweans were attacked, according to local media.

Pastor Ugo Ofoegbu has lived in South Africa for close to two decades. He sent his wife and three children back to Nigeria.

"My family is not safe here," Ofoegbu told Al Jazeera.

Precious Oluchi Mbabie, a 35-year-old Nigerian woman who works as a fashion designer and seamstress in a Johannesburg suburb, boarded the flight with her three children, leaving her husband behind.

"We agreed that it is better I go back home with the children," said Mbabie.

She and her family live in Rosettenville, one of the first areas to be affected by the violence.

"Where we are staying is very dangerous because of xenophobia," she said. "They say they don't want any foreigners there."

Reprisal attacks in Nigeria last week forced South African business to shut down, while the South African embassy in Lagos temporarily closed its doors over safety concerns.

Not just Nigerians

More than 700 people from other countries, including Malawi and Zimbabwe, have sought refuge in community centres. Many left their homes with little more than a few bags when the violence began.

One is Mozambican Oscar Setuve, who registered for a temporary travel document to return home. He has lived in South Africa for 30 years, but lost everything in the riots.

"What made me run is that I saw how they were attacking people, attacking them like dogs. And some of the people who were attacking us were people that have known us for a long time. That's what hurts me the most," Setuve said.

Mozambique and Zimbabwe were also considering some sort of repatriation of their nationals.

Al Jazeera's Fahmida Miller, reporting from the airport in Johannesburg, said a small group was turned back because of "incorrect documentation".

Ofoegbu said they will have to go to the Nigerian consulate to get the right papers before travelling.

Police on high alert

It was not the first time that foreigners were attacked in South Africa.

In 2008, at least 62 people, including South Africans, were killed. Violence and looting targeting foreign-owned stores left seven dead in 2015.

"I am so worried about the safety of my family, because these [xenophobic] attacks keep happening, so if I don't save my family now, I don't know when [this will] start again," Ofoegbu said.

"It happened in 2008 and then in 2015, now it is repeating."

The root cause of the latest violence is still unclear, but high unemployment, poverty and criminality may have played a role.

Foreigners in South Africa fear for safety after attacks
South African officials were hesitant to describe the violence as xenophobic attacks, and instead said it was an issue of criminality that the government was trying to deal with.

"While there has been a significant decline in the number of incidents, police forces remain on high alert and are closely monitoring hotspots to ensure further violence does not erupt," Minister of Defence Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said.

Police have arrested at least 653 people, mostly South Africans but some foreigners as well, in connection to the attacks, Minister of Police Bheki Cele said.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to visit South Africa next month to discuss the violence and seek a solution.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former minister of Aviation and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reacted to the Presidential Election Tribunal judgment that dismissed the petition of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate Atiku Abubakar challenging the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 election, Igbere TV reports.

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, dismissed the petition of Atiku Abubakar challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election, in its entirety, Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the five-man panel of justices led by Justice Mohammed Garba, held that the petitioners (Atiku, PDP) failed to “evidently prove” their case beyond “reasonable doubt.”

The tribunal insisted that the allegations levelled under issues 4 and 5 (above) were criminal in nature that must be proved beyond reasonable doubt.

The tribunal also said the petitioners failed to discharge the burden of proof that Buhari was not elected by a majority of lawful votes.

Igbere TV reports that three members of the five-man panel of justices agreed with the lead judge (Mohammed Garba) in his ruling.

The Tribunal, therefore, stroke out the entire petition of Atiku and the PDP against Buhari and the APC, for lacking merit, and failure to evidently prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.

Reacting to the development, Fani-Kayode said; “If anyone is surprised by today's ruling in the @Atiku/@MBuhari case then they still don't understand the nature of the beast we are fighting and the gravity of the situation we are in.They didn't just rig the election,they rigged the courts too!They control ALL 3 arms of Govt.!”

The Presidential Election Tribunal has ruled that President Muhammadu Buhari’s academic qualification was not a pre-election matter.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had told the court that the matter was supposed to be contested prior to the election on February 23.


Ruling on Wednesday, Justice Garba Mohammed dismissed INEC’s argument, adding that Section 138 (1) (a) of the Electoral Act allows for the filing of petition relating to an allegation of false information.

The tribunal held that it has within its powers to entertain the application and determine the details contained in the petition.

“I am of the view that the contents of section 138 (1) does not fall in the category of a pre-election matter,” he said.

“Although the issue relates to a matter that happened before the election, the issues relate to vital points that cannot be relegated just to a pre-election matter.”



The tribunal dismissed the application, with all other members of the panel not objecting to the lead ruling.

President’s Buhari’s academic qualification is part of the grounds on which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) wants the results of the February 23 presidential election upturned.

Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) Monday said some individuals and groups under the guise of political differences with the current government are working to destabilise the country.

“The DSS wishes to reiterate its earlier alert to the nation of plans by subversive groups and individuals to undermine national security, peace and unity in the country,” DSS spokesman Peter Afunaya said in a statement.

“These elements are determined to exploit political differences and other occurrences, within and outside the country, to destabilize the nation. They also initiate narratives to deepen their subversive objectives so as to achieve preferred illegal outcomes.”

The spokesman of the secret service did not mention any name or group but said the service would not relent in its bid to secure the country.

He said the aim of the individuals and group is to “set the country on fire as well as inflame passions across ethnic and religious divides with expected violent consequences.”

Afunaya also urged Nigerians to be conscious of fake news and unsubstantiated information spread across social media platforms to deceive and incite sections of the populace to civil unrest.

“While condemning the unpatriotic and misguided activities of these anti-social elements, the Service equally warns them to desist forthwith from their unholy acts as the full weight of the law will be brought against them,” Afunaya said.

He urged Nigerians to remain law-abiding, peaceful citizens and not hesitate to report any suspicions likely to threaten public safety to appropriate authorities.

Afunaya assured Nigerians that the service will “remain committed in its pursuit of national stability in line with its statutory mandate of protecting the country against crimes and threats to its internal security.”

Human rights activist, Femi Falana has said the federal government should give each of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria at least N1 billion from looted funds it recovered since 1999.

Falana was a key speaker at the 20th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture to mark the 74th birthday of Mike Okonkwo, Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Lagos, Igbere TV reports.

He said the fund would be used for creating jobs for women and the youth at the grassroots and subsequently curb crime rates in the country.

Falana was quoted as saying that at least N1 trillion had been recovered in 19 years, asking the government to declare the exact amount recovered and what it was used for.

“The Federal Government has recovered huge sums of money from looters. One of the policies of government, the whistle-blowing policy, has fetched the country N605 billion as of three months ago.

“I am, therefore, suggesting that the billions recovered by the EFCC, let the Federal Government allocate at least N1 billion to every local government area for job creation for our young men and women.”

Commenting on the judiciary, Falana said even though the law stipulates equality, it is difficult for the poor to get justice. According to him, if the poor fail to get justice, they would revolt and cause anarchy.

“Because if the poor do not get justice, whether the government likes it or not, whether you arrest al the Sowores of this world, there will be a revolution one day. Because when the poor rise, it can be dangerous in any society. It can even lead to anarchy, as it is the case now.

“Wednesday, what happened in Lagos the attacks if you watched the film on television, you will know that we are in trouble. Some of the criminal elements openly carried the loot on their heads and the police had a hard time containing the crisis. That is why we must go out and ensure that injustice in the polity is addressed,” he said.

The Supreme Court has reserved judgement in a suit filed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos praying the court to upturn an Appeal Court’s order for the governorship election petitions tribunal in Lagos to resume hearing.

Mr Sanwo-Olu, through his Counsel, Victor Opara, approached the apex court to upturn the order of the court of appeal to resume hearing in the tribunal, Igbere TV reports.

Governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Owolabi Salis, and his counterpart in the Labour Party, Ifagbemi Awamaridi, prayed the apex court to dismiss the appeal filed by the appellant and uphold the decision of the appeal court.

However, Justice Mary Odili, leading a five-man panel on Thursday, reserved judgment to a later date.

A five-man appellate court panel had held that the tribunal was wrong to have discontinued hearing on the basis that the AD and its governorship candidate had abandoned their petition.

Similarly, it overturned the decision of the tribunal dismissing the petition filed by the governorship candidate of the Labour Party.

The appellate court ordered the return of the petition to the tribunal for expeditious determination.

The tribunal in Lagos had in June dismissed a petition filed by the AD and LP parties challenging the victory of Mr Sanwo-Olu at the March 9 election.

The tribunal had cited the inability of the petitioners to file applications for pre-hearing conference after the close of pleadings within seven days as prescribed by law.

Following the recent warning letter issued by lawyers of the wife of former Senate President, Toyin Saraki, over libelous publications being made against her, officials of the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have denied knowledge and authority over the social media platforms that have been circulating the false allegations, Igbere TV reports.

In a response sent to Mrs Saraki’s lawyers on August 28, the state APC executive stated that the platforms have no relationship with the party.

The letter signed by the legal adviser of Kwara APC, Oladimeji Mustapha, said: “We write on behalf of Kwara State APC Executive being the state legal adviser to respond to your letter on the above subject matter and dated 19th August 2019.

“We are pleased to inform you that there has never been any time where the entire executive of this party in Kwara State met or agreed at any meeting to make any publication in respect of the former first lady of the state Mrs Toyin Saraki and that the executive body of the party in the state has never made such publication as claimed by your client.

“Furthermore, that there are many media platforms created by loving members of the party within the state and which are different from Kwara State APC Executive. More so, the State Executive Committee has no media platform created to ourself as claimed.

“As a result, therefore, the Kwara State APC Chairman or the entire members of Executive Committee are innocent of the allegation as to the said publication against the former First Lady of Kwara State.”

It is believed that the disclaimer might be an attempt to avoid culpability in any legal proceedings, as the same @MediaApc platform, was actively making statements on behalf of the Kwara APC and Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.

The recent attacks began last week after a taxi driver was murdered by an alleged drug dealer in Pretoria.

Three Nigerians were said to have been killed in the process with several others injured.

Suleman tweeted on Tuesday that all Nigerians should stand against the attacks.

“We can’t keep quiet why hardworking Nigerians in diaspora are been killed. Where are those celebrities who are always standing for unconfirmed stories? These are confirmed killings. Speak up! While we pray for God to intervene. All Nigerians at home and abroad, condemn this!” he said.

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has increased fees for Nigerians applying for tourism, student and business visas.

The embassy in a statement on Tuesday said effective from August 29 Nigerians applying for the aforementioned visas which used to cost N59, 200, would do so with an extra $110 (N40, 700).

This would bring the total amount to N99, 900.

According to the statement, applicants who are denied visas would not need to pay the extra N40, 700.

Applicants seeking the L1 Visa (work permit) will pay an extra N112, 100 if given visas while those applying for H4 Visa (dependency/spousal) will pay an extra N66, 600.

The US embassy said it raised the fees because Americans were paying too much to get Nigerian visas.

“Effective worldwide on August 29, Nigerian citizens will be required to pay a visa issuance fee, or reciprocity fee, for all approved applications for non-immigrant visas in B, F, H1B, I, L, and R visa classifications,” the statement said.

“The reciprocity fee will be charged in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, which all applicants pay at the time of application. Nigerian citizens whose applications for a non-immigrant visa are denied will not be charged the new reciprocity fee. Both reciprocity and MRV fees are non-refundable, and their amounts vary based on visa classification.

“US law requires US visa fees and validity periods to be based on the treatment afforded to US citizens by foreign governments, insofar as possible. Visa issuance fees are implemented under the principle of reciprocity: when a foreign government imposes additional visa fees on US citizens, the United States will impose reciprocal fees on citizens of that country for similar types of visas.

“Nationals of a number of countries worldwide are currently required to pay this type of fee after their non-immigrant visa application is approved.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) group has had nothing to do with President Muhammadu Buhari since he arrived Yokohama, Japan on Monday, the Presidency has said.

A statement on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said there was no protest by the group as rumoured.

The statement said: “Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora are urged to disregard concocted stories, backed with spurious visuals, of any protest or harassment of the President and his team.



“It is the stock-in-trade of hate mongers, who do not realize that the rest of Nigerians have left them far behind.

“President Buhari will make his presence at the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) count for Nigeria, and no scare-mongering or sabre-rattling will detract from the outing.”

The fugitive leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, had called on the group’s members in Japan to ‘attack’ and ‘arrest’ Buhari when he arrives in the country.

Babalele Abdullahi, son-in-law of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has denied making cash donation of N50 million to Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

Reports had said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) linked the said amount to former President Olusegun Obasanjo which the commission alleged to be ill-gotten.



A statement on Monday by Atiku’s media office said Mr Abdullahi made a donation of N50 million by wire transfer and that the funds came from legitimate sources.

The statement said: “For the avoidance of doubt, Mallam Babalele Abdullahi, Atiku Abubakar’s son-in-law, did not donate any money in cash to the Olusegun Obasanjo Library. Yes, he did facilitate a donation of fifty million naira to the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, but so did many other individuals, including civic-minded traditional rulers, state Governors, bankers and captains of industry.

“This is because the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library is a non-governmental organisation that plays a pivotal role in promoting peace and stability in Nigeria, and that should be applauded.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Mallam Abdullahi’s donation of fifty million naira was made via a bank transfer, in full compliance with the law. He did not donate or make any payment in cash, as the EFCC is erroneously and salaciously misleading the public.



“Furthermore, the sources of these funds are completely legitimate and have been conclusively proven to the EFCC. It is instructive to note that even the EFCC has not once claimed these funds to be the proceeds of any illegal activity whatsoever.

“The truth is that there is desperation on the part of the current administration to rope in former President Olusegun Obasanjo into a crime as a way of silencing his voice, which they see as the preeminent critical voice against the misrule that they have foisted on Nigerians.”

Super Eagles midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, has expressed his joy at studying business management at De Montfort University, Leicester.

The 22-year-old made the disclosure in an interview with the school.

“I was really happy when DMU staff said I could study here,” he said. “I wanted to do this course because growing up in Nigeria we didn’t really have the opportunity to actually go to school.



“It’s a personal thing for me that I want to do, to expand myself and learn new things.”

The business and management course fits around the international footballer’s busy training schedule.

He continued: “Instead of sitting at home after training I come to DMU for my classes.



“The teachers have been amazing, they really try and help me understand. Rather than just reading books they take time to explain things to me and they are also very understanding about my schedule with training.”

Wilfred Ndidi says that he hopes he can use his degree to help young Nigerian when they need help balancing football and education.



Ndidi moved to England when he signed for Leicester from Belgian side K.R.C. Genk in 2017 and has aspired to study ever since.

The midfielder has enjoyed a memorable year, getting married to his long-term girlfriend in May before heading to Egypt in June to play in the Africa Cup of Nations for Nigeria.

The Ghanaian actress averred in her new book that Kwadwo Safo Jnr moved on with the lady he impregnated while they were married. She restated the claim while calling out TV presenter, Akuko Perming for telling her to get back to her ex-husband instead of waiting for Mr Right.



The CEO of Kantanka Automobile in a now deleted post, however stated that he never gave his own side of the story but wouldn't waste time on it as he has other things to do. Kwado said he will use the time he has to study and think of how to make better car models instead.

A teenager is recovering after a snake bit him on the foot as he stepped out his front door in California.



Bryce Russell, 19, was attacked by the venomous snake after he stepped out onto his front porch barefoot while looking for his car keys on August 18.



His sister killed the poisonous snake after it bit him and the teenager was rushed to the hospital. He received 24 vials of anti-venom over two days in the hospital. He is now recovering at home.



The 19-year-old has spoken about his encounter with a rattlesnake that bit him outside his home in Norco, California.



He told CBS Los Angeles: "I was going to go dirt bike riding with one of my friends so I was looking for car keys and that's when it gets me. I was texting him and that's when it bit me."



Surveillance footage from the family's home shows Russell ljumping up after the snake, which was coiled up underneath a chair on the porch, bit his foot.



Speaking to KABC, Russell said: "It didn't really hurt to get bit, just a prick, but I definitely felt a sense of dread because you could see the venom start to inflame my foot and work its way up."



Russell's mother and sister are nurses and were able to provide first aid until paramedics arrived at the scene. His mother sprayed the snake with a hose to get it away from the front door so she could go back inside. His 24-year-old sister then picked up a shovel and beheaded it.



Russell said he plans to take the snake's body to a taxidermist and make a belt out of it.



The teenager spent two days recovering at the Corona Regional Medical Center after receiving 24 vials of anti-venom. "My face, tongue and lips were kind of tingling, I guess that's an effect of the venom," he said.



"[My foot was] bleeding a decent amount for how small the hole was. I guess the venom kind of messes up your clotting," he added to CBS.



The family said it is not unusual to see rattlesnakes in the area, but this was the first time that one has come so close to the home.

In an Instagram post on Thursday, the light-skinned actress disclosed that her son would be called Ire.
