Xyge: Hello Bro, where do i get the stocks from? I mean the Okomu Oil and the latter? Where and how do i go about buying these stocks.. Thanks.
You can buy any stock from the Nigeria Stock Exchange through your stock broker. First open an account with a stock broker of your choice as individuals are not allowed to trade directly on the floor of the Exchange. Your stock broker will then open CSCS account (free of charge) for you, which you will use to buy or sell any stock.

I use only meritrade, their services are good. I don't know about others.

PlayBook is gradually disappearing from the Market. I was surprised it was difficult to get a brand new one. I wanted 64gb but I saw 32GB. Most traders said PlayBook was difficult to sale, therefore no need to restock it. I need brand new 64GB PlayBook 2 pieces. If you have, let me know

edwill: Oh thanks so much for ur response. I did not lodge the certificate with cscs. & both the certificate and the account has not been used for transactions. it was a friend I gave money to buy the shares for me but he relocated after getting the certificate for me. then a broker met me and told me of the need to get a cscs account I accepted and he opened it but when stocks dropped, I think he left the business & relocated. but I am trying to contact him through facebook. The address I see on the certificate is that of afribank registrars. pls is the ”account number“ I see on the certificate same as cscs account? Once again, thanks.
As you have not done any transaction with that CSCS number, better open another one with another broker.

edwill: thanks a million for ur explanation which I find very interesting, how I wish I had known this all along. I bought a thousand units of transcorp in 2007 & have left it at that till date. (it pain me that I did not buy more when it dropped to 0.50k). I got the certificate later and get someone to open a cscs account. he did and sent me the account number but I lost it and all efforts to contact him failed. is there any other way I can get the number and continue to invest? thanks
Did u lodge the share certificate with CSCS? Have you carried out transactions (buy/sell) with the CSCS account number? Can you still remember the Broker that opened the account for you?

Risk in investing on shares and dealing with stockbroker
Is it possible for a stockbroker to sell my shares without informing me?and what will I do

Well every business has its own risk, making a well informed decision on share purchase will minimize the risk. That's exactly what this thread will address. A broker selling your share without telling you means he is engaging in fraudulent activity. Whenever the illegal transaction is detected, tell the broker to reverse the transaction within 24 hours or you take it up with the NSE and SEC. He will be punished and blacklisted. Above all, don't have any fear of loosing your investment through illegal transaction, the law is there to protect you.

Thanks

emmanuel ewumi: You are on your own, BGL is the issuing house to the right offer of Transcorp. Tony once worked at BGL, before he was seconded to Crystal bank that later turned to standard trust bank, which later merge with UBA. Tony is a shareholder in BGL, BGL can not give you an unbiased analysis about Transcorp
y
On point.

The buy or sell recommendations you get from these firms serve their interest. You'll be given buy recommendation when they want to drive up the price and offload their holdings and sell recommendation when they want to buy to increase their holdings. Just compare the recommendations on one stock from three different firms and you'll get the point. Mind you no firm will see a gold mine in the stock market and broadcast it to the world. Always do your own research and compare with others.

bintalabi: list the good ones that are present in Ibadan that I will appear physically

I don't really know brokers in Ibadan as i live in Lagos, why not ask friends in Ibadan

Will the 2% of the amount be deducted on every investment with the same stockbroker and company as you said one can buy even with 1k after opening the cscs account?

Yes, any number of times you buy or sell shares, you must pay commission.

Will the 2% be deducted again when I want to sell the shares?

Whether you buy or sell shares, you pay commission, do not be scared about the commission you pay which is insignificant compared the amount of money you are likely to make from your investment. The hidden truth is that this commission can not sustain any stockbroking firm financially, that is why they also buy and sell shares for themselves.

How will I know if my stockbroker is carrying out fraudulent transaction on my share?

Once an account is opened for you, you'll receive CSCS account number through which you'll be alerted via SMS of every transaction that occurs in your account. Your stock broker has no control of SMS you recieve from CSCS. Whenever you receive alert of any transaction you never authorized, quickly ask him to reverse the transaction or else...

Pls let me know the likely risk I will bear

Throw more light, risk in investing on shares or dealing with Stockbrokers?
Technology MarketRe: Jumia Customer Charged Twice For A Single Transaction by civilserva: 8:59am On Dec 15, 2013
To set matter straight.

If you had used Interswitch issued ATM card, send an email to support@interswitchng.com detailing the transaction. Also go to your bank just tell them to reverse the second transaction, you'll be given a form to fill which will be forwarded to their head office for immediate resolution.

A good corporate organization is mandated to reply all mails from clients / customers in a timely manner. By writing to them without response, do you blame him for calling them fraudster? Most of you Nigerians take many things for granted from these organizations thinking that they are doing you favor by replying your mail, in fact they are duty bound to reply your mail and treat any issue seeking their attention. Demand your right from them.

Some of you commentators didn't address any issue, rather you gave your support to Jumai, ask yourself How would eBay, Amazon or bestbuy handle similar issue involving an American?

bintalabi: I want to invest the little money am earning before I graduate next year
Where and how do I buy shares?

You can buy through a registered stockbroker. Stockbrokers can be found in any state of the Federation. There are some with Online Trading platform where you carryout all your transactions without being physically present.

Stockbrokers help to buy and sell shares, how do they make profit for themselves?

Stockbrokers make money by charging you commission called brokerage for every transaction. You also pay commission to SEC and CSCS, the total commission is about 2% of the investing amount.

What is cscs account as u stated above and how does it works?

Central Securities Clearing System Ltd. (CSCS) is the clearing house for the Nigerian stock Exchange market. CSCS is an integrated central securities depository (CSD), a clearing (transfer of shares from seller to buyer) and settlement (payment for bought securities) service provider for all stock market transactions. All securities listed on the NSE’s must have their certificates deposited (electronically or physically) with CSCS before they can be bought or sold. It is the duty of your stock broker to register you with the CSCS and you will be given investors number and Clearing House Number that uniquely identifies you. With CSCS, your broker is not the custodian of your share as you can move your shares from one broker to the other.

ihedioramma: WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT JAPAUL POST? IS IT IN YOUR PORTFO?
This stock has been traded on daily basis but still the price is not heading northward. The volume of trade signifies investors interest on the stock, taking position in anticipation of an upward movement. At 50k the price ok, but you must determine how long you are prepared to wait and what percentage of your trading fund you are willing to commit. Any positive news from the company and their next quarterly result will largely affect the stock movement.

Dumexoga: Good morning my fellow nairalanders, it's good to be here. I strongly advice everyone here to consider japaul oil. That stock will shock people soon. At this current price, it's good for a discerning investor to take position. If you have been on this game for long, you will understand what I mean. Transcorp was at this same price some time ago, but check the difference today. I have already aquired millions of units, because I really made so much profit from transcorp.
Any news from the company?

InvestmentRe: Stock Market Investment For The Beginners by civilserva(op): 6:09am On Dec 13, 2013
START SMALL

No amount is too small to start investing in stock market. You can start with 10k. Some stock brokers still accept as low as 10k to open a new account. When that is done, you can start buying stock even with 1k. It's better to start buying one particular good stock to increase the number of units to a reasonable quantity before moving into another stock. For example , if you are starting with first bank, try to increase the number up to 2000 unit before you moving into another stock. Remember the more units you have, the more you enjoy the benefit of that stock.

Heanry :
But since their is decrease in price of palm oil at the international market, don't you think the prices of these two stocks might still go down. I already have some units of okomu for long term.
phemmie06: Have you seen the recent result of okomu, the fundamental might be strong, but I guess the price will fall
Price of Palm oil at international market no doubt affects the stock price just as the price of crude oil affects the petroleum sector but the price adjusts itself periodically which shouldn't give a long term investor headache. Presently okomu has good strategic plans for expansion, their output is likely to double in 2014 if all things work as they plan. Okomu is also investing heavily on Rubber plantation which will also impact positively on their earnings.

I Agriculture Sector, consider buying these two stocks, OKOMU OIL and PRESCO. Both are healthy companies with good fundamentals.

Creamychic: Thanks a lot for this thread.
I am on the verge of opening an account with a stockbroking firm. Can u please provide a list of stockbrokers that have been tested and that are trusted? or better still, give us tips to consider when choosing a stockbroker.

Happy Sunday!
I hope the link posted by @jamace will be of good help to you.

Personally, i have done business with Signet Investment & Securities, located opposite Customs Training School Ikeja. They used to be at Church House Marina and i can say they are reliable in terms of execution of your orders. I also use Meritrade and i am pleased with their online Platform. You can add these brokers to your list and exercise your due diligence.
