President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria: yet to make his appointments A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Mr Osita Okechukwu, on Thursday assured that President Muhammadu Buhari would not neglect the Igbos in appointments. Okechukwu, who is the spokesman of the party in the South-East, gave the assurance in an interaction with journalists in Abuja. He said that the president still had more than 500 appointments to make and that the Igbos would be carried along fully. He said the appointments made so far were based solely on professional competence, but expressed confidence that Igbos won’t miss out in Buhari’s government. “My message for my people is that in the next one or two years, they will have nothing to complain about because the Federal Government of Nigeria is a big elephant. “He has more than 500 appointments to be made and the juicy ones are also there, and even the sensitive ones are also there; we cannot miss out,” he said. The spokesman urged the people to be patient as the government had just spent one month out of its 48-month mandate. “My people from the South-East are complaining over the appointments made so far; yes, that’s a valid argument but the arguments could be accessed on two grounds. “One, the president has 48 months mandate; he has just completed one or two which falls below five per cent of the mandate he was given. “On the other hand, he has over five hundred appointments to be made no matter the delay, to be made between now and December or by this time next year. “I personally feel it is very much on the side of impatience to assess the president with less than 30 appointments, because there are other crucial appointments still waiting,” he said. He explained that the appointment of service chiefs should not be politicised, considering the current level of insecurity in the country. He expressed confidence in the president’s disposition to fairness. “I do not see President Muhammadu Buhari whom I have worked with for over 12 years neglecting or trying to breach that area of the Constitution that says appointments must reflect federal character,” he said. http://uncova.com/appointments-apc-chieftain-assures-igbos2 |

The Department of State Security (DSS) on Tuesday night allowed Mr. Gordon Obuah, Chief Security Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan to go home to his family few hours after his press conference. Although no official reason was given for his detention but media reports have it that he was detained for allegedly visiting the detained bomber suspect, Okar in Kuje prison. But Obuah at the press conference said he was in the custody of the DSS primarily to give the account of his stewardship as the CSO to former President Jonathan. According to a statement issued by the PRNigeria, Obuah slept in his house Tuesday night along with his family after a comprehensive de-briefing by operatives of the Department. “He was released around 10pm Tuesday’s night,” the security source disclosed. A serving operative with the DSS, Obuah had on Tuesday afternoon expressed surprise at widespread insinuations that he had died while being interrogated. PRNigeria reported Obuh as speaking with reporters at the headquarters of the DSS in Abuja saying “gentlemen of the press, let me use this opportunity to thank all Nigerians, members of my family and concerned citizens who have expressed very serious concerns for the past six days because of the prevailing situation between I and my office. “This morning my attention was drawn to the fact that I have died in detention. This has caused serious anxiety within the public. I want to use this medium to tell Nigerians, members of my family and all concerned citizens that I’m healthy. I’m a staff of the Department of State Services and having completed my tour of duty as the chief security officer to the last President, the service feels that I should give account of my tenure. “So far, there is no adverse situation and I’m optimistic that Nigerians will be informed in due course about the outcome of this exercise. Once again, I thank you immensely. I also want to use the opportunity to thank the DG for the way he has handled me from the time I came in to the present moment. “Nigerians should be assured that the Department of State Service is a very responsible organization and I believe that nothing adverse will be done to my person if I have not done anything wrong. The Edo State Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Benin on Friday upturned the election of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Yakubu Gowon, as the lawmaker representing Etsako West II Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly. Gowon had been declared the winner of the April 11 state assembly poll and returned elected to represent the constituency, where Governor Adams Oshiomhole hails from, by the Independent National Electoral Commission. But in the judgement, Justice E. Abuua held that the APC candidate was not duly nominated by his party. The tribunal explained that the APC’s notice of intention to hold party primaries, which he sent to INEC, was less than the mandatory 21 days. It said the notice was given on November 13, 2014, while the primaries was conducted on December 1, 2014. The tribunal, therefore, held that all the votes cast for the APC candidate were wasted and that the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Sylvanus Eriagha, who was the first runner up with 4,001 votes was the rightful person to be declared winner of the poll. Reacting to the judgement, the State Chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, described the decision of the tribunal as a ”sweet victory” for the party which, he said, would keep “hope alive for the people.” ADVERTISEMENT But the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Godwin Erhahon, said all the candidates of the party were duly nominated. He, however, added that the party’s legal team would look into the judgement. Erhahon said, “We will leave the turnout for our legal teams. For now we do not have the details. “All our candidates were duly nominated.
