A client of my just called me saying tofunmi, how come u still up @ this time of the night, i then realised it a new dawn. It then crossed my mind if only importers know our sole aim is to satisfy them,now to make transactions easy this are 5 THINGS u need to know as an importer(both existing& intending importers.

1 Let your intending agent have at least a photocopy of BL.
REASON some consignment are going on transfer, if detected early enough it could be STEPPED DOWN. Most times, whether or not a consignment will b going on transfer depends on its PORT OF LOADING. I have had cases whereby client are like why the change in price, it takes a lot of explanation to convince a client that TINCAN price is definitely low compared to KIRIKIRI OR ALAKIJA where there consignment as been transfered to.

2 DEMMURAGE is one big enemy you should avoid! Its a big fat destroyer, Once your consignment is confirmed shipped, notify your agent so as 2 get a valuation down. You can even go further by paying your duties down to afford d expenses pressure when your consignment arrives. N.B DONT PUNCH YET O,(ASSESSMENT) especially if u comp*****e, never mind your agent will take care of that.

3 BE OPEN TO YOUR AGENT. Another delay agent face is due 2 their client putting them in dark with respect to the content in their consignment. I have observed that most times, apart from those listed on the BL, client tend to have other goods which known or unknown to them might be contraband! Seriously these might turn to be an issue. Always open up to your agent so it won't catch him unawares, then and only then can we defend consignments in our care.

Joelezob: I imported a 2000 model car but the clearing agent said is 2001 model as a result the price was increased. When I took delivery of the car I discovered that the car is actually 2000 model. He did not stop there, he replaced the battery with an old one. What a world!

Lets talk about the bitter and beautiful experience you may have had from your clearing agent in the past. From my experience, I realize much of the problems could arise from clearing agents not breaking it (the procedure) down explicitly for clients, or clients not understanding the DESTRUCTIVE power of Demurrage. I also have realised most of my clients spend the first few minutes of our meeting narrating experiences they had from agents before delving into the business we are actually meeting for.

The question that begs for answer arises, are we (Clearing Agents) that bad as portrayed? Or a case of clients doing business with non-licensed agents? Share your experiences, comments, complaints & suggestions. Good morning everyone.
