Medical experts at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, are currently battling to save the eyes of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero. Ajaero was said to have been arrested by men of the Imo State Police Command while leading a protest in the state on Wednesday. But the command said he was only rescued from a mob and put in protective custody. Ajaero was seen in a viral video, sitting between two men while he was being rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. In the video, the NLC boss said he didn’t have any phone on him, but had a relative in the employ of FUTHO who he hoped would be of assistance. Meanwhile, the NLC officials condemned the incident as a heinous act of attempted murder. The NLC Head of Information and Publicity, Benson Upah, described the treatment of Ajaero as an act of abduction that degenerated into attempted murder. Upah said, “Contact has been made with Congress President, Joe Ajaero, this evening around 15:30 hours at the Police Hospital in Owerri from where he was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri where he is receiving medical attention. “Thoroughly brutalised, his (Ajeoro’s) right eye at the time of contact was completely shut.” https://punchng.com/imo-protest-ajaero-in-hospital-battles-to-save-right-eye/?amp |

If successful, Odumewu will become the third Guinness World Record holder from Nigeria this year following the amazing feats set by 17- year-old pupil, Philip Solomon and celebrity chef, Hilda Baci In May 2023, Solomon, a student of Oyemekun Grammar School Akure, Ondo State, was declared the Guinness World Record holder for the most skips on one foot in 30 seconds. The boy achieved this feat back in January 2023, after recording 153 skips on one foot in 30 seconds to outdo former record holder Rasel Islam, of Bangladesh whose record was 145. Baci was declared the world record holder for the longest cooking marathon by Guinness in June 2023 with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes. The chef cooked from May 11 to 15, creating over 100 pots of food during the challenge. https://punchng.com/nigerian-artist-paints-for-82-hours-to-set-new-world-record/?amp

The Rivers State Police Command has explained how the attack on the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, during a protest at the state’s House of Assembly complex in Port Harcourt on Monday occurred. The command described the attack as ‘not deliberate’, adding that the intention behind the water cannons and tear gassing was to disperse the protesters and to ensure the protection and safety of the governor from arsonists who were culpable of causing mayhem on the premises. In a statement by the spokesperson for the state’s command, Grace Iringe-Koko, on Wednesday, it read, “Following the receipt of credible intelligence on the intention of some armed group of persons to cause mayhem in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, particularly at the State House of Assembly on Monday, October 30, and recalling the previous case of arson on the State House of Assembly a day prior which is currently being investigated, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations immediately deployed armed police operatives which he personally supervised in order to intercept the ‘hoodlums’ and ensure the protection of lives and properties within the State House of Assembly facility and its environ. “At the complex’s entrance, it was observed that youths numbering over a hundred had begun a protest to gain access to the complex and conduct themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace. “This led to the police deploying non-lethal crowd control equipment, including tear gas and water cannons, to disperse the riotous and uncontrollable protesters. “However, some minutes later, another aggressive group of persons approached the entrance of the complex and advanced towards the premises. The police, therefore, engaged them in like manner but observed that the Executive Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara, was in their midst. The police maintained that the presence of the governor at the scene was of great surprise and shock as there was no prior communication to the police on the visit of the governor to the scene of the crime, which ordinarily is the usual protocol and complimentary that we accompany his guard for proper safety considering the intelligence of security threat at hand then. In consideration of this, the DC Ops quickly took deliberate security steps to ensure his protection and safety while the Governor and his entourage went on to assess the level of damage caused by the fire incident. “Thus, it’s pertinent to state that the Police did not deliberately attack the Governor or even attempt to hurt anyone, let alone the Chief Executive and security officer of the state, which is our most essential role to protect as being peddled in the news. Due to the present situation and the misrepresentation in some sections of the media, it is pertinent to clarify this. “Similarly, the Rivers State Police Command has emplaced adequate security measures to ensure that the situation de-escalates and total calm is restored in the affected areas,” the statement added. The PUNCH reports that the police shot water cannons and tear gas at the entourage of the governor while on their way to access the premises of the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, which was reportedly burnt down following a crisis among the state lawmakers. It was also learned that tear gas was used to disperse some lawmakers and protesters after the governor stormed the complex to prevent his impeachment. Meanwhile, the governor accused security agencies of bias and “shooting at him directly” amid the ongoing crisis in the state. https://punchng.com/why-we-shot-at-fubara-rivers-police/?amp

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Muslim countries Wednesday to halt trade with Israel, including oil exports, in response to its bombardment of Gaza since deadly Hamas attacks. Israel has been pounding the Gaza Strip since Hamas gunmen stormed across the border on October 7 and, killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, according to Israeli officials. The bombing campaign has killed more than 8,500 people, two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. “Islamic governments must insist on quickly ending the crimes,” Khamenei told a gathering of students in Tehran. Muslim countries should not cooperate economically with the Zionist regime (Israel),” he said, calling for a “block on oil and food exports”. Khamenei lambasted Western governments who “stood against Palestine”, naming Britain, France and the United States. “The Muslim world must not forget who is putting pressure on the population of Gaza. It’s not just about the Zionist regime,” he said. Defence Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani warned, “certain European countries which help” Israel to “be careful not to anger Muslims”. Iran, which supports Hamas financially and militarily, has hailed the militant group’s attack on Israel as a “success” but denied any involvement. President Ebrahim Raisi has said Iran sees it as “its duty to support the resistance groups” but insisted that they act independently. The White House has accused Iran of “actively facilitating” attacks on US forces in the Middle East. On Friday, the United States announced a new round of sanctions targeting Hamas’s funding networks and sources of support in Iran. https://punchng.com/stop-trading-with-israel-iran-urges-muslim-countries/?amp
