Would you believe thst technisem catalogue says that Tokyo f1 has high resistance to Downy mildew. Smh @ that seed company. I even realised that Kenzo 2 f1 has better resistance to some of these diseases. My opinion though okoroemeka: Tokyo is for dry season farming,I have received more than 5 calls today about down mildrew problem on Tokyo cukes,if your area is prone to DW attack ,pls get green go or if you must plant Tokyo,go and get original fungicide like ridomil gold and Cabrio duo standby before even thinking of planting. |

For this one, you will stake like cucumber and tie many branches to the top. Then use horizontal rope too. It can stay even 6 months. Oohh. It's almost indeterminate in its growth. I'll shoot you a mail. Thanks |

1. Mancozeb during rainy season is not good becos it's only a contact fungicide, you need to add a systemic fungicide. 2. Are you actually using imidacloprid + laraforce gold as pesticide? Why ? Laraforce gold contains lamdacyalothrin and Imidacloprid already, so why are you still adding another product with Imidacloprid alone. That's a waste of money. DeLaRue: My Tokyo2 f1 cucumber started off crazily with each plant having between 6 and 10 little cucumbers on it! It was unbelievable.
Then suddenly the leaves started turning yellow this affected the development & size of the fruits. But new, lush leaves are still coming out from the top half of the plants. Anyone knows the likely cause & suggested solution?
We have been spraying mancozeb + imidacloprid + Lara force gold every week since week 2.
Here's a picture taken today of a yellow leaf [img][/img] |

Hello Pistotita, I was doing some research about the Indian tomato series you mentioned. Do you think the Indian tomato would do well in open field staked system. I'll like to trial about 500 to 1000 seeds. Can you help me with the seeds. I'll like to buy for trial. Thanks! Pistotita: Tomato Nursery Same procedure as cucumber above. But I had real difficulty in choosing a cultivar for this thread. BHN is a brand I love. Anyone who has had a garden in the tropical parts of the United States definitely will know about BHN. Then, I leaped further and see if I should use Asian seeds since majority farmers here are already becoming loyal customers to the Asians. I was a bit reluctant and I felt like seeing if I should use Continental maxim cultivar from Kenya. But really, there is nothing special about maxim, so I ditched it. I still have some maxim seeds. I could not easily make up my mind. Then, I started checking all the seeds in my collections, and I stumbled on Arka series. Hmmm. Ok. I picked the cultivar Girish. Let us see how far these two cultivars will perform.
Yeah! I had the privilege of talking directly to the head of the horticultural departments of the institution in chrage of these cultivars, and the lead scientist for Arka series cultivars some years ago. So, I know the ins and outs of these cultivars. Damn! My love for heirlooms (oh! I will open another thread just on tomatoes and you will see why tomato is the king of all veggies). OMG! When you taste some tomatoes, you will think they are grown in the garden of Eden. Yellow, orange, green, zebra, purple, red, indigo, black, pink, brown colors tomatoes. We will get there soon. My love for heirlooms made me forget hybrids.
I know one guy 3 years ago who had 1 ha of one of these cultivars in Idi-Iroko side of Ogun State, and the guy was just shouting that he has hit Jack pot. lol. Then, there is this guy I know in IITA who is an expert and he is just about these series. One boy told me he bought 10 grams for around N80,000 or so from him. Of course, they are not as expensive as that, but to get these seeds out of India, you will suffer. And then, I met another lady who told me that his cousin worked in one of the research institutes also and got the seed around N15,000 for 10 grams. And I told her to start dancing cos the guy really did him well. Indians do not like exporting these cultivars to Africa. So, they are gold. lol. We are talking of seeds you are talking of some that I read here and there on this site called nairaland, and I always just laugh. Ha! My people do not know anything. Move with researchers and you will get deep secrets. Of course, I gat my inner circle that we roll. We do not make noise. We just roll. I am sure one or two peole here will drop comments about these cultivars. Just wait and see. Comments are coming. If you know about these cultivars, then, you gat my respect.
But make no mistake, there are many other cultivars that are making farmers happy. I know that the whole nairaland will start looking for these cultivars. Normally I do not reveal my cultivars, but let me release these ones and see the maturity of my readers. I do not expect anyone to jump into it. It may not be good for you. Please, cultivars are not the whole story, management is the key. Even, I can use the cultivar maxim that I ditched and still get the same result. And if you want to know, I still have the cultivar Cobra from technisem in my archive. And I have Roma and Rio Grande that I asked one old woman to pick from rotten tomatoes in the market. If I start with the secrets of growing Roma, we will not finish the topic. lol. I still have my drip rolls. Perhaps, if I get a reliable hand I can partner with, we can roll a project on 2 ha of land.
OK. That is all about the tomato cultivars I am using. |

jidestroud: Lol . The Cobra should be slightly bigger than it then based on catalog info. How was it growing it? Did you grow during the rains? average fruits per plant? and what's the harvest duration? etc.
I am not really about the size though. Just seeing how different varieties respond to my treatment is all I'm after at the moment (especially during this time of the year). Currently during 50plants of each available seeds I come across. (Home consumption only) Grew it during dry season. I didn't count the number of fruits per plant but it's definitely around 50 small fruits. the yield is okay but it's awfully small sized. the harvest during is 30 to 45days depending. |

anelka78: thanks sir @okoroemeka, would the marketer seed be planted the same time with the greengo, and what inorganic fertilizer do you recommend Just plant Darina f1 for every 5 to 10 greengo f1 cos it will flower same time as your Greengo f1. I noticed Darina produces alot of Male flowers. So that should take care of your pollination issue. My Marketer cucumber flowered about 7 days after my hybrids. Darina f1 10g sachet is not expensive. |

okoroemeka: this is an interesting observation, weather has a lot to do with vegetables farming, majority of veggies loves cool weather and will shead flowers or have more males if the temperature goes too high, only a few like pepper and tomatoes thrives in hot conditions, but nevertheless we are preparing two sites to know once and for all the cucumbers variety we will use in our megaproject during dry season, first test will be 500 monalisa planted next to 500 cu 999,it will be planted Wednesday next week, after that it will be 500 green go next to 500 Murano 2 f1.,this four cucumbers variety are the top 4 commercially viable to use on large scale, but we are on a mission to narrow down the best in terms of resistance, yield, production duration and other parameters we know farmers are desperate to know surely it will be an entertaining and interesting 45 days ahead. There are some new varieties I'll like to trial God willing. Mydas f1 from Rijk seeds and Giant f1 marketed by Xgems. |

How much is 50grams Since I started the cukes in the dry season, I didn't bother to prune. I don't know if Kenzo f1 differs from Kenzo 2 f1, Kenzo 2 f1 MIGHT be an improvement on Kenzo f1. But most 50g tin available come as Kenzo 2 f1. I have only ever seen Kenzo f1 as a 5g sachet. This is my first time of growing Kenzo 2 f1, so I'm not sure how many fruits per plant, but I can clearly see that it's very productive. But you mustn't forget that your yield for any good variety still boils down to GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES. |

okoroemeka: I think in matters like this goggle is our friend, monalisa is a gynoecious variety so its expected to produce more female flowers than male at a ratio of 80 female,20 male One of the Eastwest guys in their trials in the hot season confirmed that Monalisa f1 produces a whole lot of male flowers (as opposed to the predominantly female status which their catalogue claims). So I guess stress and ones fertilization program affects the nature of its flowering. Although I haven't personally trialed it. |

FMCASH: hello bro, please can you share your experience on kenzo f1, is it better to Tokyo f1 in terms of yield, size, how many days to first harvest and resistance to disease, thanks. Hi sir, I haven't grown Tokyo f1 before, so I can't make a comparison. I'll start with resistance to disease. I'm growing Kenzo 2 f1 for the first time this DRY season and I'm regular with my pesticide spray program every 10days. Fungal disease hasn't been a challenge to me cos we just left dry season. I didn't spray a single dose of fungicide on my Cucumbers throughout the dry season. But I started adding fungicide to my spraying just few days ago as a precautionary measure since d rains have started. I havent noticed any other disease on my Kenzo 2 f1. Now I believe you know Kenzo 2 f1 is a "completely' Gynoecious hybrid producing only female flowers. I use drip irrigation and I fertigate with soluble plant nutrients through the drip irrigation water on a daily basis. With this practice, I have noticed Kenzo 2 f1 is an aggressive grower (the vines get very big very fast). It produces alot of side shoots which are very productive. The fruits are also big in size (close to Murano 2 f1 in size) and even more dark green than Murano 2 f1. It takes 40days till first harvest. I hope this helps. However, you can't plant it alone as it doesn't produce male flowers. |

And another thing I also found out with the variety is it isn't a good climber, has little tendrils for climbing so you have to train it well using trellis Thanks for the tip about the poor climbing skills of nagano f1, I guess I'll have to use Cu999 since it's a monoecious hybrid and it's early (flowering same time as other hybrids). |

Don't you think? okoroemeka: hmm,if u see the size they grow you will be shocked they use iron stands to do the staking, that is the only problem I am seeing in staking WM on a big scale,if u have 30-40 WM balls of 10 kg avg on a 20 ft stretch of bamboo that will be 300-400 kg weight on the bamboo, the bamboo that will be used for such project will be specially selected before cutting. |

okoroemeka: hmm,we have not done anything to the melon,we are so busy that we forgot the melon, even common fungicide or foliar we have not sprayed, thank God we applied good manure and nematicide before planting that why all insects ran away, they are crawling now with small tendrils appearing,it's time for 1st NPK/urea application, but I will give it to this melons no amount of sunlight can shake them,we irrigate every 3 days but their heat tolerance is unbelievable,no wonder they said it originated from the desert, and thing noticed is that no nematicide ,no vegetables farming for us as simple as that, that thing kills anything that flew, crawl, jumped or wriggled near the melons, including snails, centipede, millipedes, worms of various categories, caterpillars of different models, bettles of all colours, but only drawback it also kills earthworm, but a small price to pay for a good yield. |
