Hello everyone,I'm planning to plant cucumber after my tomato is done this month, during my cucumber market survey,I realized the dark green cucumber isn't really the favourite in my area..they prefer the lighter ones...

From what I've learnt from this thread,I can see greengo is the king here, but unfortunately it's dark green, pls I would like to know what other variety is a good as greengo but not dark green..

Below is a picture of the variety most sellers have

It's actually very possible. Have grown 4 stands of Mydas f1 in my garden before. One thing I noticed is that it has very good continuity in production. Only thing is that you'll need to feed mydas plant very well and use a very very tall stake, if you want to get good results.
First flush of fruit could be up to 6 at once, 2nd flush can comfortably produce 4 fruits with good agronomic practices. I have experienced that. But mind you, it was only 4 stands in my home garden. Replicating such commercially is always a challenge.
Another thing I love about Mydas f1 is that it's 100% parthenocarpic. Read that up if you don't know what it means. smiley

ok sir, please can 10 big cucs be gotten from mydas with good fertilizer schedule on open field?

I'm currently trailing Loleza f1 and it has poor germination rate as well - about 25% (At least the batch of seed I bought from d company). So only buy if you can afford to cushion lose from expensive seeds.

for the trial i was planning 2 do on avenir, i changed my mind due to reported germination issues. as emmaachile recommended, i contacted a major rz zwaan seed seller some days ago abt their hybrid habanero seeds, he recommended loleza f1 and lengai! pls anyone with practical experience on d pro and con of rainy season cultivation of these varieties should help 'the boy'. Okay sir. I'll like to compare etna f1 yield with that of Avenir f1 since they are both from technisem.

okoroemeka:
not from technisem but we have grown nihort shombo variety,Etna is shombo with fingerlike pods,it's very resistant to diseases

Lol....@op, those are okro flower buds. The flower is yet to open. The okro flower is too conspicuous and beautiful to be hidden wink

okoroemeka:
I don't know what to call this, our okra plants are fruiting without flowering, fruits are everywhere with not even one flower in sight,I know some okra varieties can self pollinate like pepper, but having fruits develop straight without any sign of flowers,I will not deny this is my first time of seeing such, and if it continues like I suspect it will then the nihort NH-Ae47 variety is really full of surprises.

Hello pistotita,

I haven't been to the wholesale market in a while to confirm price of some vegetable items. I havent called my agents there too either. I haven't had crops to harvest for a few weeks now. That's why. But the price of tomato in the retail market is very very high here in abuja. A small plate that used to go for 150 naira is now 500 naira. So you can imagine the wholesale price.

Pistotita:
@OluchiDelly, FMCASH, Cocoboms, and Adeoye007
Please, what's the present price of tomato in your areas? Do you know the highest and lowest prices from April till date? I want to compare with some figures with me.

Ogb5, please permit me to ask you the prices of tomato from April till today in Edo and Delta. Please, could you here?

Wow! That tomato plant looks amazing. Thanks for sharing

jidestroud:
Evening All

I came across a sight today worthy of mentioning. Saw a tomato plant growing out of a kitchen drainage pipe 2 storey building up. To my amazement, it had over 30 big fruits on it and the leaves looked so well nourished. Then it got me thinking how possible was it to achieve so much up there, soilless, no disease, only source of nutrients is waste water from the kitchen which isn't even constant...

Hoping to replicate this hydroponics method if possible.

Got up to 420 bags in about 7600 darina seeds

Please rate it

FMCASH

Okoroemeka

Means you got an average of about 6 fruits per seed for the Darina f1. It's cool. You'd have probably gotten more bags with Murano 2 or Cu999. Cos the Darina f1 is small in size. Cu999 fruit is almost twice Darina fruit.

Using Ethephon on cucumbers is very risky to a farmer. It's known to promote fruit ripening and abscission (dropping of leaves and fruits). So I don't know how it can be beneficial to potentially increase flowering. If you had mentioned foliar application of synthetic cytokines and natural brassinolides, I'd have agreed with you on d flowering improvement. But ethephon shocked

Wizs2019:

Oga Pistotita, The analysis is spot on! And I agree with your conclusions. I was looking through my notes from 2 years ago and some of the markets that alternatives to Mile 12 and giving great prices are no longer viable, why? because the market is too saturated with the same crop. Even in Mile 12 the prices fluctuate a lot more now than before.

I remember my first question on Nairaland was about crop rotation and recommendation of cultivars, but only one person responded (many thanks to that gentleman!). I am currently harvesting my cucumber plants on a one acre planting area, I have got 401 bags so far with a project total harvest of 500 bags. I will tell you now that the harvest is only Okay because when I do the sums it works out has 4-5 fruits per plant which is not fantastic. A good harvest would be 650 to 700 bags, and a great harvest would be 800 bags plus. I know what I need to work on, for example using plant growth substance Ethephon to promote more female flowers on monoecious cultivar such as CU999, to bring the harvest up. As you have said cucumber is just one crop but with it short maturity period it can guarantee a steady income almost every months. So what do I do? I split my farm into sections and rotate where I plant cucumber. If I plant cucumber on section A, after harvest I will plant tomatoes on Section A and cucumber again on section B then after that, I will chillies on Section A, Tomatoes on Section B and Cucumber on Section C. After this, a year and half on more would have past on the farm therefore I can plant cucumber (or maybe melon this time) on Section A again. All of this need planning and resources but if you can achieve this you will be able to constantly make money while protecting your land from building up harmful bacteria/viruses.

But my brother, what I don't like is your shade throwing and lack of mutual respect. You are not in minority, we farmers are the minority. I am of the school is preparing well at the start and not cutting corner because it ultimately affect your harvest. For planting cucumber on one acre, I will tell you to get an okay result you need to spend about 500k (workers and all), include setup cost of 350k to 400k, you are looking at a start-up cost of about 900k. But I will guarantee that you will get your money back and a few hundred k in one season if done right. Me saying you should be concise (Dictionary meaning of the word is 'giving a lot of information clearly and in a few words; brief but comprehensive') is that you should give us maximum knowledge with minimal effort. No malice intended. What I would love is if we can share ideas openly, not be critical of anyone's effort and help people interested and understanding modern concepts. I would rather write about fertiliser formulation and soilless media composition etc. than anything else. So please everyone (@Okoroemeka, @Pistotita, @Wizs2019 and everyone!) (olive branch) no more shade throwing and negative comments.

Let the sharing begin! Images might be useful for some people.

Thanks for the response. I was asking because am considering purchasing a dual chamber seed planter that applies fertiliser as it plants. I was hoping it's ok to do so.

From your response, I gather the only worry is "the fertiliser should be dissolved by rain or irrigation before the seed germinates?"

Hi numen,

In case you want to buy the 2 in 1 maize planter that applies fertilizer at same time, I have a new one for sale (it has never been used and has all the accessories intact). I wanna sell it at giveaway price of 40k. Other sellers sell for above 50k. I'm in abuja if you are interested. Shoot me an email. I respond fast. Thanks!

@Okoroemeka,God bless you for your works.
Please which type of cucumber seed will you suggest I go for and how many grams will be okay for three plots of land.
Thanks Sir.

Bamocoded, with the kind of questions you are asking, I'm not sure you have gathered enough knowledge and experience to be successful in that one acre of land you newly acquired for farming.
My brother, don't go and lose your money oo!!!
It's better you work on half plot and learn how to cultivate watermelon and cucumber before you'll be jumping to 1 acre. You even mentioned 3 plots of cucumber, do you have an idea of how stressful it is to do just 1 plot of cucumber for some of us with experience, and you that is just starting wants to do 3 plots?? shocked shocked Hmmmm. don't doubt original foliar fertilizer like Haifa bonus,if you use the oyibo recommend dosage of 450 gram per knapsack on cucumbers here in the tropics it will burn the leafs without mercy, due to high concentration of elements in it and weather factors,Plantzyme by biostadt is another incredible product if u can find one that is not expired

Plantzyme by Biostadt is truly a wonderful seaweed extract foliar fertilizer. I have used it before and you see the obvious difference after it's foliar application. I was seriously looking for their product one time in abuja but I didn't find. Even their expired product is still very effective.
I love using GENUINE seaweed extract based foliar products.

We can work it out. It is seriously scarce. They do not easily sell to foreigners except during surplus.

For this one, you will stake like cucumber and tie many branches to the top. Then use horizontal rope too. It can stay even 6 months.
