they are both dwarf bush type variety with almost identical pods and yield, the only difference is contender loves cool weather, while Cora will thrive in any condition.we had a bitter lesson on weather requirement with cabbage so we are no longer taking chances.

@op, do you think there's a significant difference in the production (yield) of Cora beans variety and the popular contender beans variety? What do you think?

the bush variety Cora bean does not need staking and produces for 3-4 weeks after 40-45 days of planting,with an average yield per plant of 3-3.5llbs per crop,if the soil is fertile it will not need additional fertilizer or just organic manure.while on the other side the pole bean variety super giant needs serious staking 6-7 feet high,it produces for 2-3 months after 60-65 days of planting,with an average yield of 6-6.6llbs per crop,these leguminous crops are nitrogen fixers,if grown in poor soil they amend the soil by pumping Nitrogen in it making it more fertile,Technisem super giant pole bean type @#2,000 naira for 10 grams,this is another crazy yielding crop !!!NB ,pls note that all information are from technisem catalogue and agritropic Nigeria.

to tell you the truth I am skeptical about the figures the seed company could throw out, sometimes it is not what they say sometimes it's more than what they say,I believe weather,soil and management has a lot to do with the final yield,EG techinisem said that Heracles F1 WM will mature in 80 days,but a friend harvested in 68 days,but all I know is that they will not throw out such figures without careful observation and verification,so be assured that a well managed bean crop with weather cooperating can match or even beat their own figures.

You are right there. You never can tell until we actually try it. That Heracles f1 in 68 days still surprises me

we have pegged out 50×25 feet square in both cucumber and watermelon farm to see their yield against the green beans,technisem is giving estimate yield of 3.3llbs (1.5kg)for each Cora bean crop,if you scale that up by let's say, 1500 crops will survive out of 1800 to yield 1 kg each,u have 1,500kg×400 naira=#600,000 naira,so as you can see my friends there's no way cucumbers or watermelon can pull 25% of that income from half plot of land.

Hmmmm.....1kg per seed of Cora beans? Is that really feasible One seed produce 1kg of green beans

after a well detailed investigation about the economics of the grocery trade,the results was a big shock,the crops we think are the money spinners are low on value for money index,take cucumbers for example wholesale farmgate prices for it now is #100 naira/kg=#4,000 for 40kg 1 bag,let's take another example watermelon is being bought wholesale fatmgate at #40-50 naira/kg=#400-500 naira for a 10-12 kg ball,ok,let's consider the humble,no noise making green beans the wholesale farmgate price for it now is #400-500 naira per kg,my investigation found out that it's the lowest price after Xmas,it was sold for #800/kg during the dry season and #400 naira is the lowest it can get,hmmmm !!!,green beans is five times more valuable than cucumbers and ten times more valuable than WM,so that set us thinking HOW HARD CAN IT GET,we tilled half plot today and planted 1800 bean Cora variety (technisem) on it and will plant more in staggered sets every 3 weeks,it will be an interesting head to head drag race between these three fantastic crops in our farm,

45 to 50 days for most varieties from sowing to first harvest.

I am still investigating the market Dynamics of watermelon in and around our area in orumba south LGA,what I discovered astounded me, one grocery seller confessed that she takes delivery of two big bags of WM every 2-3 days(1 bag contains 30-35 WM balls),she further said that she sells 20-25 balls daily just from one grocery out of a possible 7-8 groceries around,she further said that during scarce periods her supplier in onitsha sources the produce from Benin republic,Chad,Cameroon,etc,now that's something.

That's really something! very insightful and thought provoking. And I'm sure that would be the situation from around the country.

here in Abeokuta a dozen of medium size of water Mellon is 3500-4k .The price is not encouraging at all. Because of the high rainfall in most part of south west to plant water Mellon ,someone have to prepare and prepare .pest and diseases and pest is of the major problem. Though fertile land is not a problem down here 75% of our lands are fertile even I can say it authoritatively that southwest has the most fertile land in Nigeria..

A dozen medium sized watermelon for 3500 is not a bad deal nah. How can you say it's not encouraging ?

I spent an enlightening 1 hr at the grocery we supply cucumbers,I found out that the market women divide an average sized kaolack into 6 parts and sell #100 naira each,they further confined that bigger sized WM like koloss, Heracles,logon,etc , will be divided in 8 parts @#800 for 1 ball, quite interesting, within the 1 hr period I was there she cut and sold 5 balls,I there and then believed that the population of Nigeria is more than 200 million.

Wow! That's amazing. So within 1 hour, aunty seller made nothing less than 1000 naira in profit from watermelon alone. Hmmmm......i wonder how much she makes in a day then

land availability is the only limiting factor,if you manage to get your desired land it will not be fertile,it's a catch 22 situation.

My brother, same situation over here. Getting fertile land in nassarawa state is war. Most of the accessible farmlands here have been overfarmed. It's really exhausting.

I went to supply cucumbers to our customer in umunze and was shocked at the small size kaolack WM they are selling for #550 naira,the woman said supply is scarce that their supplier in onitsha is struggling to meet to total demand of groceries in the area of 700-1000 balls of WM weekly,hmmmm,very interesting,I will get pics of the WM size tomorrow so anyone can compare the size/price in their own area.

my brother I have to fertilizer like that because the land has been under intensive cultivation for 6 years straight now,from plantains ,Cavendish bananas, cucumbers,fresh peppers, cucumbers again, garden egg,now WM,so as you can see we need serious soil amendment.

Ogam, EWS is east west seeds nah. They have tested and trusted seeds for the tropics. But you are right sha, na to grow d ones person for your area don grow before. That's an interesting observation about Heracles f1. 68days!

it possible my friend harvested Hercules F1 in 68 days,I think days to maturity depends on weather,pls I don't know about EWS,we only plant varieties that had been tested and trusted to withstand the high disease pressure in the tropics,we are not playing betnaija inside bush,it deadly serious business not try your luck.

OP, have you heard about a 60days-from-sowing-maturing hybrid watermelon in Nigeria. I have been reading about it online, but no one has mentioned the name of the variety. Have you heard anything on it? And what's your take on Erato f1 watermelon from EWS?

WM don't like much water,irrigated at least every other day or three days,from what I am seeing they need mostly urea fertilizer,we plan to fertilizer every 2 weeks to get 2 balls per plant.

My irrigation most likely would be once a week till the rains pick up cos of the cost of running my water pump twice a week. The technisem technical guy in Ghana adviced me about adding calcium and potassium fertilizer esp when flowering starts and against fruit abortion, that's in addition to the high nitrogen fertilizer.

He said he only fertilized twice, I was shocked; this one you are planning on fertilizing every 2 weeks (smiles). Although I read about 3 applications (@DAP, @25Days and @45days).

in our area what matters is how red the inside is and how sweet it is,the color or pattern of the exterior does not matter, another big factor the market needs is size the bigger the better and koloss will easily top 12 kg,a fruit of 12kg will sell whole sale for not less than #500 per one,so the bigger the better.

I have heard Koloss f1 is very big. #500 per big ball is a good deal. Coincidentally I planted Heracles f1 WM on 6th/7th March. I'm praying for a good outcome. Rain fell a day before I planted. But I have plans to irrigate tomorrow or next.

koloss F1 watermelon and Hercules F1,two of the best WM variety technisem has ,in a head to head challenge,which on will yield more,bigger,and more adaptable and resistant to disease,we will find out the usual way ,plant and see !!!

hello sir, why are you considering Koloss f1? are you sure you are not gonna have a problem with getting market for it ? Cause in abuja here, anything that doesn't look like kaolack skin colour might not be accepted

well u have a point but here in the. east it is regarded as a curse to harvest crops u did not grow,we had a mild theft problem in a water melon farm,we just got clay pot make it look scary with Red cloths,palm fronds etc,we placed these pots at strategic areas around the farm and before u say jack people stopped even using paths close to the farm.LOL

yes, we supplied seeds to rivers and osun States last week,anytime u are ready to learn I will get u attached to eagle foods ltd,if u stay 1 week with them u will know everything, they operate the biggest cucumber farms in the east with production of 100-150 bags every 4 days,real farmers don't have time for seminars its only e-farmers that collect money from people to teach them what supposed to be free,there's one that is telling people to pay to teach them how to harvest 1000 fruits on 12feet by 6 feet land,HAAAAAAAHAaaaa,oh my GOD,if he can get 12,bags(75,000k now)from that small piece of land he will not have time to beg folks to pay 3,000k for training.

Wow! A bag of cucumber goes for about 6500 in your area. That's amazing!

the market in our area is dominated by Cu 999,for reasons best known to the marketers they prefer 999,if u plant any other variety you end up eating it yourself and using it to cook soup for u and your family.when we planted murano we only managed to sell it off by the grace of God.
