CAIRO (Reuters) - Equatorial Guinea, one of Africa’s smallest countries, will replace Morocco as hosts of the 2015 African Nations Cup finals, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement on Friday. Morocco wanted the tournament postponed over fears of a spread of the deadly Ebola virus but CAF refused and on Tuesday stripped the north African country of the hosting rights. Oil-rich Spanish-speaking Equatorial Guinea hosted the 2012 finals with neighbours Gabon but will take on the 16-team tournament on their own from Jan. 17-Feb. 8, despite having only two major stadiums in the capital Malabo and Bata. It is not clear whether the new hosts will be able to play in the tournament. Equatorial Guinea were disqualified from the preliminaries for cheating. http://af.reuters.com/article/sportsNews/idAFKCN0IY1AA20141114 |
Farewell to Nokia |
Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) said it would roll out its Lumia 535 smartphone this month with an affordable price tag in its key markets, dropping the Nokia name just months after buying the Finnish company's handset business. Loaded with its latest Windows Phone 8.1 operating system, the Lumia 535 and Lumia 535 dual SIM will be priced at around 110 euros (about $137) before taxes and subsidies, Microsoft said in a statement. The phone will feature a wide-angle 5 megapixel front-facing camera and a 5-inch qHD display screen, the company said. Smartphones run on Microsofts' Windows software, mostly Lumias, captured only 2.7 percent of the global smartphone market in the second quarter, down from 3.8 percent the year before, according to research firm Strategy Analytics. Microsoft completed its $7.2 billion deal to buy Nokia's (NOK1V.HE) handset business in April. Nokia continues as a networks, mapping and technology licensing company. It owns and manages the Nokia brand and only licenses it to Microsoft. Microsoft had said in the past it planned to license the Nokia brand for its lower-end mobile phones for 10 years and to use the name on its smartphones only for a "limited" time, without saying how long that might be. - See more at: http://aitonline.tv/post-microsoft_unveils_first_lumia_smartphone_without_nokia_name#sthash.t99DRgav.dpuf |

We can host the 2015 CAF, We can handle Ebola |
Morocco had recently cast doubt upon hosting the finals in early 2015 on Ebola fears, and had asked for the games to be postponed for a year. Morocco has also been disqualified from the tournament. |

A Nigerian military helicopter on surveillance mission has crashed in Damare, a suburb of Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa state. A resident, Jamilu Inuwa, said he saw the chopper go down. “The helicopter crashed in Damare,” he said. “I don’t know if it is a military plane or not.” he said. A Yola-based journalist however told PREMIUM TIMES he had it on good authority that the helicopter was on surveillance mission and was carrying arms and ammunition. He said he was further told that there were some foreigners aboard. “Immediately after the crash, soldiers were drafted to the scene to cordon off the scene,” the journalist told PREMIUM TIMES. Mr. Inuwa also said the scene of the crash is not far from the temporary camp of the National Youth Service Corps which is serving as a base for the internally displaced persons [IDPs] in the state. The spokesperson of the Defence headquarters, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, could not be reached for comments just as the spokesperson of the Nigerian Air Force, Dele Alonge. They did not answer or return calls News of the helicopter crash came about two months after a Nigerian Air Force fighter jet, went missing during routine operations in the northern part of Adamawa State. The Nigerian Air Force aircraft went missing on September 12. The aircraft, an Alpha Jet (NAF 466) was involved in the counter insurgency operation against the extremist Boko Haram sect. http://ahmedayoade..com/2014/11/breaking-military-helicopter-on.html?spref=tw |
Many students feared dead after a bomb reported exploded at the Government Comprehensive Senior Science Secondary School in Potiskum, Yobe state as students gathered for morning assembly. “The students had gathered for the early morning assembly when something exploded in their midst with a thunderous sound at exactly 7:50 am. “The explosion was reported to have killed and injured many students but I really can’t say how many at this point because we are now evacuating the victims to the hospital which is just 100 metres (yards) away,” said one teacher, who asked not to be identified. A medic at the Potiskum General Hospital where the victims were taken said scores of students had been admitted. “We are still receiving casualties from the school which is a stone’s throw from here. Our priority now is to save the injured, so we have not started a headcount of the victims” the medic said. A local resident, Adamu Alkassim, said there was confusion in and around the school but the scene was a mass of abandoned footwear and blood. There’s been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but accusing fingers are pointing towards the dreaded islamic sect Boko Haram.http://afikpochictimes.com/?p=4033 |

The Senate has approved $1 billion dollar loan requested by President Goodluck Jonathan to tackle insecurity and terrorism in the country. The approval, however, did not come easily as some lawmakers argued that President Jonathan breached the constitutionally laid down process of requesting for extra budgetary funds. But the Chairman Senate Committee on Finance said President Jonathan is in full compliance of the law on this matter. President Jonathan had written a letter asking the Senate in July to approve a $1 billion (about N165) loan for the fight against Boko Haram. The President said he needed the cash to upgrade military equipment and for training as well as logistics for the Armed Forces. This is in addition to N968.127 billion voted for defence in the 2014 budget by the Federal Government. http://www.channelstv.com/2014/09/25/senate-approves-jonathans-1-billion-loan-to-fight-insurgency/ |
City authorities in Chongqing have introduced a 100ft ‘cellphone lane’ for pedestrians – is it a step too far in the name of public safety? https://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2014/9/15/1410787900375/85296c07-cb3e-4ed7-9119-fb19f2d04b1b-460x276.jpeg In Chongqing, China, with a degree of seriousness that has yet to be determined, the city authorities have designated a 100ft “cellphone lane” for people who use their phones while walking. “First mobile phone sidewalks in China,” declares a notice next to it. In fact, the Chongqing phone lane seems to be almost a direct copy of one that was painted on to 18th Street, Washington DC, in July. The Washington version was created for an experiment into crowd behaviour by the National Geographic TV channel. Which is a clue that the seriousness of the Chinese version may be below 100%. The scheme also raises some fairly obvious questions. How will people so distracted by their phones that they are bumping into lampposts manage to stay within the lines of the lane? Even if they do, why will they not bump into each other all the time, or walk straight into the road when the lane finishes? How, for that matter, will they even notice the existence of the lane in the first place? Casual observers of the Washington experiment suggested that many phone-users just ignored it, but perhaps annoying Chinese people will prove more law-abiding than annoying Americans. And yet there does seem to be some pressure building behind the idea that “distracted walking”, as it is known, is a real problem. In 2012, the city of Philadelphia announced what it called an “e-lane” for smartphone users. In fact the pilot scheme turned out to be an April fool, albeit one designed to raise a serious public safety issue. http://www.theguardian.com/world/shortcuts/2014/sep/15/china-mobile-phone-lane-distracted-walking-pedestrians?CMP=twt_gu |
