Our friends at talksport.co.uk assess Liverpool transfer target Diego Costa, to see if the Atletico Madrid man really is the perfect replacement for Luis Suarez. As Liverpool seemingly prepare for the departure of Luis Suárez, a number of replacements to mirror his impact on the pitch have been mooted. Costa was pivotal to this, with his 10 goals and seven assists, and in an attack line at the time consisting of Radamel Falcao and Adrian Lopez, his performances were on a level unexpected of him. The Brazilian has impressed under head coach Diego Simeone and some aren’t surprised to read reports that Liverpool have offered £21.8m for the 24-year-old. His discipline – or lack thereof – has proven problematic over the past season; only Christian Stuani (14) and Alejandro Domínguez (12) picked up more yellows cards than Costa (11) of every striker throughout Europe. This aspect of his game has let him down in the past, and he’s definitely the type of player capable of starting a fight with his own reflection. Yet, while his attitude may be of concern, his attacking attributes certainly weigh in his favour. With a shot accuracy of 46% – a figure more impressive than the likes of Edinson Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic last season – his ability in front of goal is clear. Moreover, his on-target conversion rate was an impressive 43.5% for Atletico, and better than Liverpool duo Suárez (31.9%) and Daniel Sturridge(35.7%) in comparison. It can be argued that while his attitude is problematic, it’s worth the Reds making a move for the Brazil international. Replicating the threat of Suarez is easier said than done, such was his impact at Anfield last season, but Costa has the ability to become a hit with the Liverpool faithful. His tendency to find the back of the net and assist his team-matesis evident from his Primera Division return last season, but with a 75% pass success it seems as though this side of his game needs work if he’s to fit into Brendan Rodgers’ possession-based system. In addition Costa’s average of only 1.2 key passes per game is a far cry from Suárez’s 2.7 in a creative sense. While it would be difficult to follow in the footsteps of the Uruguay international, it’s unlikely that Costa could emulate, let alone better, the exploits of the Liverpoolstriker. That isn’t to say that signing the Atletico ace wouldn’t be a good piece of business for the club. As Suárez continues to press for a move away from Anfield, only asuitable replacement will allay any fears Liverpool fans have for the future. With the club likely to receive a sizeable income from his sale, Rodgers should be able to strengthen accordingly. An attacking trio of Costa – should he arrive – Philippe Coutinho and Iago Aspas would be expected to provide good support for Sturridge, and collectively the quartet boast the attacking ability to soften the potential blow of the Suarez leaving. The fee for Costa would undoubtedly be a stumbling block for Liverpool, with the player certainly not worth his reported £21.8m valuation, especially considering that Costa has picked up more cards (35 – 34 yellow and one red) than he has scored goals (34) over the last four La Liga seasons. However, if the club can negotiate this price down, it could turn out to be a good piece of business for the Merseysiders as they aim to secure a top four finish. By: Allsoccerplanet.com |
Match: Man United vs Wigan Athletic (FA Community Shield) Venue: Wembley Stadium Date: August 11th 2013 Time: 2pm Referee: Mark Clattenburg It is the curtain raiser for the new domestic season right here in England and traditionally, it begins with the COMMUNITY SHIELD. Manchester United who are champions of the English Premier League for a record 20th time will Square off against Surprise, yea! Surprising FA cup winners Wigan Athletic who defeated Big Money spenders Man city to win the oldest club competition. The two sides will be parading new faces down the touchline, as the world will witness a Man united community Shield game without Sir Alex Ferguson for the first time in over two decades, as the “chosen one” David Moyes will be leading the Army from Old trafford in his first major test since taking over the reigns at Old trafford meanwhile Wigan who lost their coach in Roberto Martinez to Everton will be competiting from the Championship zone after going down last season with Owen Coyle been their new manager. Will David Moyes be able to carry on the Man United legacy at the first time of asking, or will it be Wigan with Owen Coyle their new manager who will turn up and cause another Wembley shock, this time as a Championship side ![]() Man United The Red Devils begin life without Sir Alex ferguson with a test of character game against Wigan Athletic, Manchester United have endured indifferent pre-season results during their tour of the Far East, winning two, losing two and drawing one of their five friendly games, so this will provide a chance for United to firmly silence any critics who suggest that Moyes may not be up to the job at United, one of the biggest football clubs in the world. The Old trafford side has been boosted with the addition of Wilfred Zaha from Crystal Palace and he should be on parade after decent pre season games in which he had a goal and two assist to his credit Wigan Athletic The latics sprung one of the greatest shocks in FA Cup Final history in May when they defeated money bags, Manchester City in the Wembley final, with a last-minute goal scored by Ben Watson which marked an incredible 2012/2013 campaign although they couldn’t manage to stay in the topflight as they got themselves relegated but surely the win against City should be a good consolation. Wigan are prepared solely for this encounter and they show that guts by hammering Barnsley 4-0, in their opening game back in the Football League Championship with Ben Watson, Grant Holt, Leon Barnett and Shaun Maloney all on target. KEY STATS The past four Community Shield games have seen at least four goals scored. Wigan conceded just twice during the FA Cup winning which booked their maiden Community Shield spot. The past eight duels between these two have ended with a winner to nil. It was united seven times. Three of the previous six Community Shield clashes have been settled on penalties. Mexican poacher Javier Hernandez has knocked in siz goals in the six Man United games that he’s played with Mark Clattenburg refereeing. VERDICT Manchester United go into this tie as clear favorites and are expected to brush the relegated Wigan aside. No doubt, there will be massive amounts of pressure riding on the shoulders of the newly-appointed David Moyes- taking into consideration this will be his first competitive game in charge and he has a lot to prove. This pressure and thirst for acceptance may work to Wigan’s advantage as the latics have nothing to lose and will prove to be tough opposition. David Moyes definitely looking to convince all the doubting Thomas in the Man united supporters fold must take this game with no levity and I expect players like Robin Van Persie and new boy, Zaha to get the match going while Wayne Rooney is a majour doubt for the season opener has he is still suffering from a Shoulder Injury. For Wigan, reaching this far is already a job well-done and loosing wouldn’t and will never be considered an embarrassment but if players like Shaun Maloney and Ex Norwich striker Grant Holt can bring their A-game to the table then we should have a game in our hands. Having said that, I feel Manchester United will be too hot to handle and also should be poised for victory, don’t expect a surreal score line but convincingly enough the Red Devils should be able to make it count even without all their top class players available as they begin real life without the enigmatic Sir Alex Ferguson. PREDICTION Habbeytricks punts for a 3-1 victory in favour of Manchester United. Let’s feel your pulse on the match as well… http://http://allsoccerplanet.com/preview-fa-community-shield-manchester-united-vs-wigan/ |

Last night, Serie A outfit Fiorentina confirmed that they have agreed a deal worth £25.8 million for the highly rated Montenegro forward, Stevan Jovetic, where City will pay an initial £22 million, while the rest could rise through bonus payments. City coach Manuel Pellegrini will be hoping Jovetic will bring that extra fire power to the team. But with the likes of Nasri, Aguero, Dzeko and new signing Alvaro Negredo already in the squad. The Muslim world is observing the holy month of Ramadan as football teams across Europe begin their pre-season training sessions. This could spell disaster for a professional footballer as fasting means you eat before sunrise and stay hungry until the sunset. Recently, new Liverpool signing, Kolo Toure, talked about how fasting in Ramadan makes mentally stronger. He’s not the only Muslim footballer in the top leagues around the world. Some of the top Muslims footballers are: *.Mesut Ozil *.Karim Benzema *.Edin Dzeko *.Samir Nasri *.Yaya Toure *.Franck Ribery *.Hatem Ben Arfa *.Demba Ba *.Stephan El Shaarawy *.Nicolas Anelka To understand how these footballers cope with intense physical training during their fasts, LiverpoolFC.com spoke to their club doctor – Zaf Iqbal (A muslim). Here’s the complete transcript of Liverpool’s Dr. Zaf Iqbal on the month of Ramadan: (Q: Question, ZI: Zaf Iqbal) Q: Please can you explain the importance of Ramadan in Islam, and what it means to you? Zl: Ramadan occurs during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is a period of self-control and discipline. It’s where all Muslims fast between the hours of sunlight, so from dawn until sunset. It’s really a case of appreciating what you have got and it sympathises with those peoplewho haven’t got as much as you have – so all the people that are suffering around the world, through lack of food and poverty. For myself, personally, I’ve been observing Ramadan since the age of six. It has just become a normal part of my life at this time of the year. Q: As a doctor, do you feel that fasting is safe and are there any circumstances where people should avoid fasting? ZI: You have to remember that the majority of Muslims who fast do this out of choice. And at least we know that at the end of the day there is going to be food available for us. Compare this with the millions of people around the world who don’t have that choice and don’t know where their next meal is going to come from. So for the majority of people it is safe, but there are exemptions. Obviously fasting is a test and it is difficult. It can put stress on the body. But for the majority of people it is fine. People who are sick, the elderly, pregnant women and very young children are exempt from fasting. Q: What advice do you give to players observing Ramadan, to ensure they are healthy and hydrated during this time? ZI: It’s very much a personal choice. We try and support them as much as possible. As Kolo Toure mentioned, as a result of fasting, he often.... Read more www.allsoccerplanet.com/2013/07/15/liverpool-club-doctor-talks-about-training-and-ramadan/
