Super Eagles gaffer Stephen Keshi has revealed that Golden Eaglets star Kelechi Iheanacho would not be included in the squad list for 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Keshi says that the U-17 World Cup MVP must first get league experience and play more regularly. He went on to acknowledge that Iheanacho is an extraordinary talent but still has a long way to go before he can play at the Senior World Cup. Iheanacho is a good player, but he ....Read more http://allsoccerplanet.com/keshi-no-place-for-iheanacho-at-the-world-cup/ |

And the 22-year-old is hoping to get more playing time under manager Allan Johnston to prove to people back home that he is fine, no problem and is still “ready to play.” “It will make people back home know that I’m fine, that there is no problem and I am still playing,” said Ibrahim. “I would appreciate that. Tottenham boss Andre Villas- Boas has revealed Gareth Bale put the team under ‘intense’ pressure to secure his summer move to Real Madrid. The Wales international finally completed a protracted switch to the Bernabeu over the weekend for a world-record fee of £85.3million. Spurs boss Villas-Boas conceded it was the will of the player which proved decisive. Speaking after a meeting of top coaches at UEFA headquarters in Switzerland, the Portuguese told The Telegraph: “The pressure we were subjected to by the player has been intense. “The influence of Real Madrid has been very big and you get to a point where you have to consider if it’s feasible not to accept an offer and whether you can press on with a player in that state of mind. “Obviously, we should be happy with the transfer fee that was paid. Players want to win championships and I believe that with Gareth that is within reach. “At the end of the day, it’s up to a player to decide if he wants to stay or wants to go.” The summer transfer window closed on Monday, more than two weeks after the opening Premier League fixtures. Villas-Boas does not believe that is a healthy situation, adding: “The clubs like it as it is but the coaches are of the opinion that the market should be closed earlier. “The coaches need time to prepare their teams for the season. Most coaches would like it to be open less time and closed earlier; obviously we will have to have further meetings.” Bale is now planning to live up to his billing in the Spanish capital although he has to wait until September for his Madrid debut when Real travel to Villarreal. Asked about the great players Real have had in the past, Bale said: “There have been the likes of Zinedine Zidane and obviously the previous ones, which were a bit before my time, like Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano. “There are lot of players who have been unbelievable here, world class and legends of the game. Hopefully, I can become the player I want to be, and hopefully be in that league.” Bale will be managed by Carlo Ancelotti at his new club and said: “I think he’s a great manager, he’s won at every single club he’s been at, I think. “I’ve spoken to other players who have had him as manager and it’s been nothing short of he’s the best manager they’ve ever had. So obviously that was a factor in me coming, working with a great like himself. “As for the squad, it’s an absolutely amazing squad, I’ve got to work hard to get in the starting XI. There are world-class players here and I obviously came here to be a part of it and to try and get into the starting XI and win trophies.” By: www.allsoccerplanet.com |
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has established himself as one of the most quintessential, controversial and enigmatic footballers of his generation. Here, in excerpts from his delectable autobiography ‘I am Zlatan Ibrahimovic’, he reveals his allure for Jose Mourinho, his disgust of Pep Guardiola and the times he might have moved to English football. Jose Mourinho is a big star. He’d been my manager at Inter. He’s nice. The first time he met my partner Helena, he whispered to her: ‘Helena, you have only one mission: feed Zlatan, let him sleep, keep him happy.’ That guy says whatever he wants. I like him. He’s the leader of his army. But he cares, too. He would text me all the time at Inter, wondering how I was doing. He’s the exact opposite of Pep Guardiola. If Mourinho lights up a room, Guardiola draws the curtains. I guessed that Guardiola was trying to match up to him. Mourinho would become a guy I was basically willing to die for. Already during the 2008 European Championship I was told that Mourinho, my new manager at Inter Milan, was going to phone me, and I thought: ‘Has something happened?’ He just wanted to say: ‘It’ll be nice to work together, looking forward to meeting you’, nothing remarkable, but he was speaking in Italian. I didn’t get it. Mourinho had never coached an Italian club. But he spoke the language better than me! He’d learned the language in three weeks, I couldn’t keep up. We switched to English, and then I could sense it: this guy cares. After the match against Spain I got a text message. ‘Well played,’ he wrote, and then gave me some advice and I stopped in my tracks. I’d never had that before. A text message from the coach! I’d been playing with the Swedish squad, which was nothing to do with him. Still, he got involved. I felt appreciated. Sure, I understood he was sending those texts for a reason. He wanted my loyalty, but I liked him straight away. He works twice as hard as all the rest. Lives and breathes football 24/7. I’ve never met a manager with that kind of knowledge about the opposing sides. It was everything, right down to the third-choice goalkeeper’s shoe size. It was a while before I met him. He’s elegant, he’s confident, but I was surprised. He looked small next to the players but I sensed it immediately: there was this vibe around him. He got people to toe the line, and he went up to guys who thought they were untouchable and let them have it. He stood there, only coming up to their shoulder, and didn’t try to suck up to them. He got straight to the point: ‘From now on, you do it like this.’ Can you imagine! And everybody started to listen. They strained to take in every shade of meaning in what he was saying. Not that they were frightened of him. He was no Fabio Capello, who was a demon manager. Mourinho created personal ties with the players with his text messages and his knowledge of our situations with wives and children, and he didn’t shout. He built us up before matches. It was like theatre, a psychological game. He might show videos where we’d played badly and say: ‘So miserable! Hopeless! Those guys can’t be you. They must be your brothers, your inferior selves,’ and we nodded. We were ashamed. ‘I don’t want to see you like that today,’ he would continue. ‘No way,’ we thought. ‘Go out there like hungry lions,’ he added. ‘In the first battle you’ll be like this . . . ’ He pounded his fist against the palm of his open hand. ‘And in the second battle . . . ’ He gave the flip chart a kick and sent it flying across the room, and the adrenaline pumped inside us, and we went out like rabid animals. I felt increasingly that this guy gives everything for the team, so I want to give everything for him. People were willing to kill for him. There was one thing that really bothered me: no matter what I did, there was never any hint of a smile. I was doing totally amazing things, but Mourinho had a face like a wet weekend. One time we were playing Bologna and.... Read more http://allsoccerplanet.com/zlatan-ibrahimovic-claims-he-would-die-for-jose-mourinho-calls-pep-guardiola-a-coward-and-labels-capello-a-demon/ |

Perennial duopolous title contenders Barcelona and Real Madrid both kicked off with victories in the season opener last weekend in La Liga. Reigning champions Barca battered hopeless Levante 7-0, while Madrid overcame a spirited Real Betis side with a late winner from Isco. However, the 2013/2014 season offers plenty of intriguing, novel elements to the Clasico rivalry, starting with the arrival of two new managers in the form of Tata Martino and Carlo Ancelotti. Martino’s appointment at the Nou Camp in place of Tito Vilanova, who was forced to resign through illness, will not change a great deal. The experienced Argentine is an open admirer of the Catalan club’s tiki-taka methods, and is focusing his training-ground efforts on restoring the team’s ability to pressurise opponents deep inside their half and therefore gain possession as close to goal as possible. Ancelotti’s tactical impact at Madrid will be far greater. Under predecessor Jose Mourinho, the Bernabeu side adopted a counter-attacking style based on organisation, pace and power. It was never a particularly popular approach with a demanding set of supporters who are used to a greater degree of flair and flamboyance and Ancelotti has already spoken of his desire to instil a more exciting brand of football. Perhaps more exhilarating than the identity of the managers, however, is the fact that both squads contain a number of promising young players who are aiming to freshen up the Clasico rivalry by making their mark at senior level. The most high-profile example is at Barcelona, where Brazilian boy wonder Neymar has arrived from Santos to a great fanfare as he attempts to lessen the burden carried by Lionel Messi both on the pitch by distracting opposition defenders and off it with his ability to act as the face of the club’s ambitious marketing strategy. But Neymar will not be allowed to think for one second that hecan come anywhere close to matching Messi in terms of star billing. Perhaps his greatest challenge even bigger than adapting to his new team’s playing methods or the faster pace of the European game is his need to strike the right balance between serving his continental cohort and finding room for self- expression. Understandably, Barcelona’s strategy is arbitrarily based on getting the best out of Messi. They believe he is the best player in history and therefore everything they do is directed at maximising his opportunities to score goals and win matches. For all his undoubted individual ability, Neymar will have to fit into that line of thinking and accept a support role. As you would expect from a club boasting such a rich recent history of developing its own players, Neymar isn’t the only talented youngster hoping to make an impact, with a batch of homegrown talent on the cusp of becoming key performers for Martino’s side. For starters, Neymar is likely to .....Read more http://allsoccerplanet.com/new-faces-to-spice-up-el-clasico-rivalry-in-20132014-la-liga-season/ |

Julian Gray, 33, is a left-sided defender and midfielder who played for Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Fulham, Barnsley, and Walsall. He has spent the past two years in the Cypriot top division with Nea Salamina. ‘Football’s the only profession I know where you hit 30 and people say, ‘ooh, I’m not sure’. They have doubts, just because of your age. It should be about performance. Look at Ryan Giggs or Kevin Phillips. Science, technology, new diets, means footballers are still fit well into their 30s. I feel as good now as when I was 23, 24. I’m 33, but I’ve still got another three, four, maybe five years in me. Arsene Wenger helped teach me the importance of diet, training, stretching. I was at Arsenal from eight years old, and he gave me my debut, away to Newcastle in the Premier League in 2000. I came on for Kanu with 20 minutes left. I’d been training with the first team for a.... Read more http://allsoccerplanet.com/julian-gray-kanu-was-the-best-player-i-played-with-at-arsenal/ |
This week includes Stoke’s novel tactics under Mark Hughes, Joe Cole rolling back the years at West Ham and Southampton’s young record-breakers. 1) Southampton’s teenage stars Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw became the youngest full back pairing to start a game inPremier League history in the 1-0 win at West Brom. Right back Chambers, at 18 years and 36 days, is 173 days younger than his fellow academy product Shaw, putting them well ahead of Gary and Phil Neville who were 20 and 18 respectively the first time they both occupied the positions for Manchester United in a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in October 1995. They might even be the youngest ever in the top flight. The record appears to belong to Cyril Trigg and Billy Hughes who stepped in to Birmingham’s team to solve an injury crisis in a 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa in 1936. They were also both 18, but Trigg was only 11 days away fromhis next birthday. Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino started another 18-year-old winger James Ward-Prowse among six Englishmen in his team.Who would have thought an Argentinean who still uses an interpreter for press conferences could become Roy Hodgson’s best Premier League ally? 2) Stoke’s fans used to like a chorus of ‘Swing Low Sweet Chariot’ in deference to Arsene Wenger’s accusations that they played like a rugby team – but they had a new song at Anfield: ‘We’re Stoke City, we’re passing the ball’. A change of style under Mark Hughes saw the Potters play 336successful passes in 90 minutes against Liverpool – compared to 197 in the same fixture last season, and 183 the year before. Time will tell how well the new approach works. Stoke got a point thanks to a 0-0 draw in both those games, and this time would have got a 1-1 but for Simon Mignolet’s late penalty save. Even so Asmir Begovic’s ten saves made him the busiest Premier League goalkeeper of the weekend. 3) Joe Cole seems to have been around forever, he made his debut for West Ham back in January 1999, so it’s easy to forget that he is still only 31. His return to Upton Park last season was ruined by a hamstringinjury, but this is the first year since he was at Chelsea that he’s done a proper pre-season and it showed with the part he played in Hammmers’ 2-0 win over Cardiff. Cole now has three goals in eight starts in his second spell at Hammers, andhis passing accuracy on Saturday touched 90 per cent. Early days, but did he ever retire from international football? (4) Frustrated Paolo Di Canio was complaining that Fulham stole their 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light with just one shot – Pajtim Kasami’s 52nd minute goal. But while the Black Cats had 14 attempts in all that doesn’t mean they ever really broke down Martin Jol’s defensive tactics. As many as five of their efforts were from further than 30 yards out, including a speculative effort by Stephane Sessegnon measured at 36.8 yards. All but three of the others were from outside the box -and only Ji Dong-Won’s late attempt was from closer than the penalty spot. 5) Billy Davies fell out with the last Nottingham Forest regime when they refused to let him strengthen his squad half way through the season. Perhaps that’s why he’s already starting a campaign for more cash this time. It’s three wins in three games after beating Bolton, but he was telling everybody that he just needs three more players to mount a promotion challenge. 7) Most pundits reckon Blackpool’s chances of doing anything in the Championship will depend on whether manager Paul Ince can hang on to his son Tom beyond the transfer window. The Tangerines have done well enough without the 21-year-old, however, during the two games he’s been banned for being caught on camera making an abusive gesture at a match official during the 1-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Preston. Only an injury time goal by Marvin Emnes for Middlesbrough stopped them making it three wins out of three in the League so far. Leon Clarke’s two for Coventry in the 4-0 demolition of Carlisle at Brunton Park took him to an astonishing 11 in 14 matches since he signed on a free transfer from Charlton last season. It’s a record that is bound to attract attention to the 28-year-old striker – especially as he’s one of three players who have been told they can leave so the administrators can knock £1million a year off the Sky Blues’ wage bill. 9) Phil Brown was less than a success when he took over Southend last season with a dismal run of just three wins in 17games after taking over from Paul Sturrock. This season has started better, though the 2-0 win over Northampton means they are one of only five clubs with a 100per cent record in the Football League after three games. Key has been getting striker Freddy Eastwood fit again – the 29-year-old has two goals already and after losing more than a stone in weight before pre-season looks like getting back theform that once persuaded Wolves to pay £1.5million for him. 10) Combustible Steve Evans promised to become a more calm character after moving into League One with Rotherham, and if that was ever going to be tested it was on his return to old club Crawley. The 50-year-old Glaswegian, with a colourful history of disciplinary trouble, came through with flying colours and even stopped himself from celebrating David Worrall’s winning goal. www.allsoccerplanet.com |
