The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured members of the public that the scheme has made all necessary preparations to ensure the mobilisation of all eligible prospective corps members in the next service year. The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig-Gen. Sule Kazaure takes took over as the 17th DG of the scheme, promising to priotise welfare of corps members and the staff. Brig.-Gen. Sulaiman Kazaure gave the assurance in Abuja on Wednesday during a Media Parley organised by the scheme for Editors and Reporters of various media organisations in the country. Kazaure explained that although the scheme could presently cater for only 86,000 out of the 170,000 screened for the next service year it had taken necessary precautions to ensure the rest partook in the service. “In the 2016 budget, provision was made for the mobilisation of a total of 210,000 corps members. However, the figure for both 2016 Batch ‘A’ and Batch ‘B’ has more than doubled the original projection. “Like we did before the 2016 Batch ‘A’ orientation course, we have appealed to government for special intervention grant to mop up excess of this figure. “So far, we have received the green light from the relevant government agencies to prepare for the mobilisation of all qualified prospective corps members. “However, the limited cumulative capacity of the orientation camps nationwide necessitates a second stream orientation course for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ which is planned for January 2017,” the director-general said. Kazaure commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his personal intervention in strengthening the operations of the scheme and some state governors for their support toward promoting national unity and development. The director-general, however, appealed to defaulting states, local government councils and NGOs to support the NYSC in delivering its national development objectives, pointing out that lack of support remain the biggest challenge of the scheme. According to him, this attitude is most glaring in the limited capacity and quality of facilities in most orientation camps across the country; hence the inability of the corps to accommodate more than 78,000 in one orientation course. He therefore called on all state and local governments to wake up to their responsibilities of assisting the scheme in the provision of orientation camp facilities and post-camp accommodation and transport of corps members. Kazaure listed other responsibilities to include logistics support for inspection of corps locations, material support for Community Development Service (CDS) and security of corps members during the service year. This notwithstanding, the director-general disclosed that the corps is collaborating with about 12 organisations and agencies to deliver its mandate on national development. Similarly, he said that the scheme had trained more than 600,000 corps members on various skills to be self reliant in the last four years, adding that nine beneficiaries of the Presidential; awardees have been granted automatic employment into Federal Civil Service in addition to cash donations. Besides, the director-general said that more than 300,000 rural communities have benefitted from the NYSC medical outreach conducted in October 2015, among other achievements. He pledged that the scheme would continue to sensitise corps members to maintain neutrality, honesty and commitment to electoral duties. Earlier, the Director of Press, Mrs Bose Aderibigbe, described the media parley as an avenue for the scheme to enlist the support of the media in showcasing its activities with a view to sustain public appreciation of the schemes relevance. She appealed to the media to continue imbibe the ethical principles of objectivity and balanced reportage especially in handling issues affecting the scheme to avert the negative impacts of misrepresented facts. Buhari Orders NYSC to Mobilise All Prospective Corps Members November 16, 20160844 Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Sulaiman Zakari Kazaure DG complains of inadequate budgetary allocation Ogheneuvwede Ohwovoriole in Abuja The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Sulaiman Zakari Kazaure, has said that despite the inadequate budgetary allocation, which has stalled the agency’s operation in the past few months, President Muhammadu Buhari had given the marching order to the agency to mobilise all qualified prospective corps members for the 2016 Batch ‘’B’’ service year. In all, the NYSC boss said that over 170,000 corps members will be mobilised this month, while the remaining 86,000 members will be mobilised in January next year. He stated this while interacting with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday. According to him, ‘’In the past few weeks, the NYSC has been in the news over its presumed inability to mobilise all qualified prospective corps members for the 2016 Batch B service years. As much as there is always public interest in the affairs of the scheme, there is the need to put the fact in their right perspective and clear the lingering doubt. ‘’In summary, the NYSC is prepared as always, to mobilise all qualified graduates for the next service batch. However, it must be emphasised that as a budget-dependent organisation, the scope of our activities is facing financial constraints like every other government agency in the present recession.’’ |

sharliz:FOUR STATES PROVIDE ADDITIONAL CAMPS, GET DG's COMMENDATION The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, has praised the Governors of Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba and Zamfara state for providing additional camps for hosting of 2016 Batch 'B' Orientation course for corps members deployed to states with security challenges. He made the commendation at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Batch 'B' Pre-Orientation workshop in Calabar. The gesture will allow Bauchi, Gombe and Taraba states to hosts two camps simultaneously - one for corps members that will be deployed to them and the other for Corps members that will be deployed to Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states respectively. In the case of Zamfara state, both the Permanent Orientation camp and the additional camp will host corps members deployed to the state because number of Corps members will be above the capacity of the permanent one. Kazaure stressed the need for the three tiers of government to live up to their statutory roles in the operations of the scheme as a panacea for addressing the challenges of obsolete, dilapidated and inadequate state of facilities in most orientation camps. "We are encouraged, however, by the efforts of the federal government at providing funds in spite of obvious financial constraints. "In particular, I wish to thank Mr. President for making it possible for all graduates to be mobilized for service in 2016," he said. The Director-General said the current Management of the scheme was encouraging public-private partnership to complement the efforts of federal and state governments towards enhancing all aspects of its operations He said the choice of the theme of the workshop: "Strengthening the Orientation Programme for Effective Service Delivery" was informed by the Management's resolve to reposition the scheme to respond adequately to demands of the current times. He added that the orientation course content was being restructured to align with the current needs of the youths. The DG used the occasion to express gratitude to the Cross Rivers State government for its support during orientation course and winding-up , and passing-out exercises as well as the provision of drugs for the scheme's Health initiative. Earlier in an introductory remarks, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Chief Anthony Ani, said the workshop would highlight observations made during the 2016 Batch 'A' orientation course, especially the challenges and best practices that came from it. Ani also said resolutions of the workshop would add value and enhance the smooth conduct of the 2016 Batch 'B' Orientation course. |
